WELCOME, it’s great that you joined the Dublin Event Guide Community! :-) Every week a minimum of 70 people join our big family. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This weekend the picking is easy: I will be at the Street Performance World Championship (or City Spectacular) for the whole day on Saturday and the whole day on Sunday. And then on Sunday evening the World Cup final is on my list.<\/p>\n

The Gina Jazz Trio will perform in Bewley’s Theatre. The trio is an exciting new band to hit the Dublin Jazz scene. With an entirely original music style, the music covers a broad spectrum from Jazz standards to original material influenced by classical music. ‘The Gina Trio’ debut album is set to be released in late 2014.
\nThe band is Gina Pukaite (vocal), Gediminas Karkauskas (piano), Cormac O’Brien (double bass).<\/p>\n

Ghosts in Our Machine – Vegan Ireland Film Screening – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

Join director Liz Marshall and Vegan Ireland for the Irish Premiere of her award winning movie “The Ghosts in Our Machine”. Liz Marshall will talk and hold a Q&A session. Samples of vegan foods will be available. (This movie is not gory.)<\/p>\n

The Ghosts in Our Machine is a documentary that illuminates the lives of individual animals living within and rescued from the machine of our modern world. Through the heart and photographic lens of photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, you will become familiar with a cast of non-human animals. The film follows Jo-Anne over the course of a year as she photographs several animal stories in parts of Canada, the U.S. and in Europe. Each story is a window into global animal industries: Food, Fashion, Entertainment and Research.<\/p>\n

MARTCADE in Rathmines<\/h2>\n

A new venue, run by the visual arts organisation MART opened in Rathmines. It is called MARTCADE and is described as “a new Berlin Style Food Hall with some of Irelands leading Market Food Vendors selling Dublin\u2019s Best Coffee, Juices, Cake, Pies, Salads & Sandwiches! A colourful art space to eat, drink, relax and work. MARTcade hosts free daily BYOB events from 17:00-20:00: music, comedy, theatre, b-movies, workshops. Open Weekdays 11:00-20:00 \/ Weekends: 11:00-16:00 (closed Mondays).<\/p>\n

Sounds and looks interesting and a new arts venue is always welcome. Check it out, it is at 46 Lower Rathmines Road, next to the church. http:\/\/www.martcade.com<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin City Libraries Summer Children’s Programme<\/h2>\n

During July and August the Summer Programme will take place again in Dublin’s Libraries for children. There will be Theatre and Yoga, puppet shows, art, drama, music, storytelling, Viking workshops and more and all for children and families. All events are free. Booking is recommendd, though. A world premier of “Ulysses Cylinders” inspired by James Joyces’s Ulysses will come to the Coach House of Dublin Castle. This collaborative exhibition combines the alchemic artistry of Dale Chihuly with painter Seaver Leslie’s pen and ink drawings to create a unique collection of golden glass Cylinders.<\/p>\n

Working with Leslie’s drawings on paper, artists Mace and Kirkpatrick constructed fragile glass drawings, which Chihuly’s team studio amalgamated into individual Cylinders of glass wrapped in gold leaf. Each drawing offers a visual trigger into selected narratives of Ulysses as recounted by Joyce.<\/p>\n

The Street Performance World Championship has been for many many years the best Festival in Dublin. It’s been around for a good few years and I still find people that have never heard about it. This year the festival has been renamed to City Spectacular and other elements have been added to the Street Performances, but for me the Street Performances are the great thing.<\/p>\n

The “add-ons” are a Live Music Stage, a food village, mini zoo, Family Area and more. You can also see Mums and Dads getting pied in the face or soaked at the \u2018Kid’s Court with Ray D’Arcy’. And there will be the \u2018ESB Spark Your imagination’ area with educational workshops for kids and an “Outdoor Living Room”.<\/p>\n

The festivals runs from 11-13 July.<\/p>\n

And now back to the Street Performances:<\/p>\n

They are full shows with a duration of approx. 40 min. All performances are free, but the performers are not paid to be there and will therefore – as it is normal on the street – also ask at this event for your donation. So bring some suitable change or notes with you. The performances are of the best you will ever see. There is a total of 13 street performers<\/a> and they will repeat their shows a number of times over the weekend. City Spectacular – Street Performance Festival<\/h2>\n

The Street Performance World Championship has been for many many years the best Festival in Dublin. It’s been around for a good few years and I still find people that have never heard about it. This year the festival has been renamed to City Spectacular and other elements have been added to the Street Performances, but for me the Street Performances are the great thing.<\/p>\n

The “add-ons” are a Live Music Stage, a food village, mini zoo, Family Area and more. You can also see Mums and Dads getting pied in the face or soaked at the \u2018Kid’s Court with Ray D’Arcy’. And there will be the \u2018ESB Spark Your imagination’ area with educational workshops for kids and an “Outdoor Living Room”.<\/p>\n

The festivals runs from 11-13 July.<\/p>\n

And now back to the Street Performances:<\/p>\n

They are full shows with a duration of approx. 40 min. All performances are free, but the performers are not paid to be there and will therefore – as it is normal on the street – also ask at this event for your donation. So bring some suitable change or notes with you. The performances are of the best you will ever see. There is a total of 13 street performers<\/a> and they will repeat their shows a number of times over the weekend. The semi-final (Germany vs Brazil) was epic, BUT unfortunately the World Cup finals are usually not so great. From 06-15 July, a road show of Puglia, the Italian region that is the “heel of the boot”, is in Dublin.<\/p>\n

Organised by the Puglia Tourism Agency, this Road Show has been in Vienna, Berlin, Munich, then London, Paris and now Dublin is the last stop on the tour. There will be fee activities for adults and children. From 12:00-20:00 every day until Tuesday you are invited to experience the culture, history and life style of Puglia, along with local food & wine tasting, traditional music, virtual tours of the region and fun attractions for the kids. You will also learn how to prepare homemade \u201ctaralli\u201d and \u201corecchiette\u201d pasta, how to dance the typical \u201cPizzica\u201d and enjoy the fine flavours of the Puglia\u2019s wines.<\/p>\n

Admission is free.<\/p>\n

From 06-15 July, a road show of Puglia, the Italian region that is the “heel of the boot”, is in Dublin.<\/p>\n

Organised by the Puglia Tourism Agency, this Road Show has been in Vienna, Berlin, Munich, then London, Paris and now Dublin is the last stop on the tour. There will be fee activities for adults and children. From 12:00-20:00 every day until Tuesday you are invited to experience the culture, history and life style of Puglia, along with local food & wine tasting, traditional music, virtual tours of the region and fun attractions for the kids. You will also learn how to prepare homemade \u201ctaralli\u201d and \u201corecchiette\u201d pasta, how to dance the typical \u201cPizzica\u201d and enjoy the fine flavours of the Puglia\u2019s wines.<\/p>\n

After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.<\/p>\n

Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. Not Garth Brooks AGAIN? No not really!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, a little bit! ;-) It has to do with the Garth Brooks Saga but only is not about Garth Brooks:<\/p>\n

The players in this week’s This is Odd story are the near-dictatorial City Manager who doesn’t seem to be accountable to anyone. Then there is the mayor of Dublin, who – despite the grand and delusional title of “Lord Mayor” has absolutely no power beyond switching on Christmas Trees and opening the odd shop and then there is the Taoiseach.<\/p>\n

The mayor once was elected into the City Council, so he has a political mandate. Not as a mayor (that election\/selection is a bit of a joke), but as a city council member. The City Manager has absolutely no political mandate, he just submitted his CV and was employed.<\/p>\n

Where is the odd part of the story? Here it is:<\/p>\n

After the City Manager made the decision of only allowing 3 concerts and when then Garth Brooks decided to cancel ALL concerts, suddenly the mayor jumped in and started flapping his arms. You would think that the Mayor just goes to the office of the City Manager, knocks at his door and says “Hey, we need to talk!”.<\/p>\n

Not so in our screwed up system: The Prime Minister of the country had to tell these two to talk and then they didn’t just get together, but it was a matter of “my office will ring your office to arrange”. http:\/\/news.ie.msn.com\/entertainment\/now-enda-is-trying-to-get-the-garth-brooks-concerts-back<\/a><\/p>\n

Don’t you think it is odd if the mayor can’t pop over to the City Manager to discuss important stuff with him?<\/p>\n

You might think; Maybe the current mayor is a whimp, or maybe the current City Manager thinks he is superior to anything and anybody? I don’t know what it is, but it is clear that something is wrong!<\/p>\n

The solution? Quite simple: Get rid of the City Manager and also get rid of the mayor. Then let everyone in Dublin vote directly for a Mayor who then will appoint his staff. Have the Taoiseach run the country and the Mayor the city.<\/p>\n
