Hi all!<\/p>\n

A quick intro today because again I am late. :-\/ The sun is shining already out there and I am still typing and the parents among you might wonder what to do with the kids and there is still no flippin’ Dublin Event Guide in the Inbox. :-)<\/p>\n

Last week I mentioned a few events in this Intro that will take place and one sentence was “Dublin Pride is big, but it might not be for everyone. But there is also a Summer Festival in Phoenix Park on Sunday. And the Dublin Flea Market. ….” And then I got an angry mail from one subscriber because he felt that I disapproved of Dublin Pride and expressed that with the comment “it might not be for everyone”. Hmmmm, I can certainly say that this was not the intention and I have been seen regularly at the Dublin Pride parade. I hope saying “this event might not be for everyone” doesn’t constitute as discrimination, because I say that regularly. (Just last week I said it about World Cup Games and today it applies to the Teddy Bear Picnic AND to the National Play Day, and in all honesty, to EVERY event. Imagine if all events were for everyone, we would have a crowd problem at every single event. ;-) SO if anybody felt negatively affected; It was not my intention to express judgement in ANY way.<\/p>\n

The person who sent me the mail will unfortunately not read this anymore because he unsubscribed from the Dublin Event Guide. Pity! Luckily the remaining 21,000 people are staying! ;-)<\/p>\n

And it does happen (usually after working for about 24 hours without sleep on this e-mail magazine :-) ) that I ask myself “WHY? Why am I spending all this time researching free events, writing about them, stressing about getting the mail finished as soon as possible and still being much later than planned, worrying about getting enough donations to pay the for th cost again this month, etc.<\/p>\n

This weekend is a weekend for children: National Play Day, Teddy Bear Picnic, Museum events. Dublin City Libraries Summer Children’s Programme<\/h2>\n

During July and August the Summer Programme will take place again in Dublin’s Libraries for children. There will be Theatre and Yoga, puppet shows, art, drama, music, storytelling, Viking workshops and more and all for children and families. All events are free. Booking is recommendd, though. The Irish Examiner printed an article by travel writer P\u00f3l \u00d3 Conghaile that lists “50 fantastic Irish days out that won\u2019t cost you a cent”.<\/p>\n

North Quay car lane to be used for bicycles<\/h2>\n

When I write about public transport and cycling vs cars in Dublin, I feel I have to declare where I stand: I don’t own a bike, but I use Dublin Bikes. I own a car and use it for work (the day job) and to transport equipment (I regularly drag a lot of sound equipment around.) I am in favour of public transport and non-car transport, but I won’t be able to give up the car.<\/p>\n

With this in mind it is very much with mixed emotions when I read that Dublin City is considering the use of a full car lane on the North Quays along the Liffey for a two directional cycling lane. It is great news for cyclists, but a disaster for people that need to use the car. The North Quays are already seriously congested and this will make it a lot worse.<\/p>\n

Bray Head Slide – You can still apply<\/h2>\n

A few months ago, an artist provided a big “street water slide” in Bristol<\/a> for the May Bank Holiday and a few hundred people were allowed to have a go. These few hundred were selected from nearly 100,000 who had applied.<\/p>\n

The same (or a similar) slide is now coming to Dublin: At the Bray Summer Fest, a 90m slide will go from Bray Head down to Bray and it will be in action on 12+13 July. You can still apply until this Sunday at 17:00. 700 spaces are available, so you need luck to get a space, but it is free, so you should give it a go!<\/p>\n

Dale Chihuly\u2019s vibrant coloured glass installations and opulent Chandeliers hang in many of the world\u2019s most prestigious museums and public spaces including the Victoria and Albert museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Louvre in Paris.<\/p>\n

A world premier of \u2018Ulysses Cylinders\u2019 inspired by James Joyces\u2019s Ulysses will come to the Coach House of Dublin Castle. This collaborative exhibition combines the alchemic artistry of Dale Chihuly with painter Seaver Leslie\u2019s pen and ink drawings to create a unique collection of golden glass Cylinders.<\/p>\n

Free bear care and checkups from Doctor Ted and the Teddy Bears Hospital for minor repairs will be available. And this year, the Teddy Bears Picnic incorporates National Play Day so there will be a DJ, face painting, bouncy castles and inflatable games for all ages, entertainment on the Lake Stage, a \u201cmake & do\u201d area and picnic facilities with goodies galore. The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/p>\n

“Miller began as a fashion model and freelance photographer for Cond\u00e9 Nast in the 1920\u2019s and later collaborated as an artist and model with Man Ray in Paris. She travelled to Egypt in the 1930\u2019s and, after returning to Europe, became one of the few female war correspondents during the Second World War. Miller\u2019s work with Vogue Magazine, spanned from 1939-1953, and included covering the London Blitz, the battle of Saint Malo, the liberation of Paris and the concentration camps, Buchenwald and Dachau. It was after the war, while still working with Vogue in 1946 that Lee Miller created the images of Dublin that make up the exhibition in the James Joyce Centre.”<\/p>\n

Workshops on wildlife conservation for Ages 9-12 take place in several libraries from 07-18 July with Jim MacMonagle of Dublin Zoo. The human being is the only creature which has spread to every continent on planet earth and with the explosion in population numbers is now threatening the existence of many animals in their native habitat. How can we prevent this? The talk will explore the situation and look at some of the many conservation projects which Dublin Zoo supports.<\/p>\n

The Street Performance World Championship, one of the best – if not THE best – festival in Dublin for many years and one of the reasons why the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) was born, has been changed completely. Allegedly it is still there – but seemingly not as a “World Championship” anymore – at the core of the newly named “City Spectacular”. Originally I had planned to write this week’s “This is Odd!” about the madness of a Prime Minister of a European country opening a low-price clothes shop in a different country. I wanted to say that it is just odd that Taoiseach Enda Kenny opened a new Primark (Penney’s) in Berlin and that it doesn’t matter how big the shop or the company behind is, you wouldn’t easily get another European Prime Minister to go that low to open a cheap clothes shop.<\/p>\n

But then the world was turned upside down for up to 160,000 people when Dublin City Council refused to grant permission for two of the planned five Garth Brooks concerts<\/a> in Croke Park.<\/p>\n

Dublin City has the to give permission and they have the right to grant or refuse permission and while I think it is cruel to leave so many people disappointed and with a significant loss of money (for flights and hotel accommodation), I can also see that the reasons for the refusal are genuine and make some sense.<\/p>\n

But – as so often – the real issues can only be found between the lines:<\/p>\n

So what happened really? Aiken Promotions is the organiser\/promoter of the event and they have to apply to Dublin City for a license to run the event. I am not sure what the typical timescales are for that, but considering that the concert dates are 25-30 July, so less than 4 weeks away, you would think that it is high time for Dublin City to make a decision!? The application was submitted<\/a> on 17 April and the decision was made on 03 July, that’s 11 long weeks! But it is also odd that tickets were sold in January and the application was only submitted in April.<\/p>\n

But it wasn’t that the applicant was informed about the decision first, instead it was Councillor Ray McAdam<\/a> who “leaked” the news on Twitter after he was told the Dublin City Manager confirmed it to him. How embarrassing! Interestingly nearly all articles in the major news outlets that quoted McAdam initially around 10:40 removed his name from their reports when they rewrote them throughout the day. They also removed the statement (but it is still available here<\/a>) that a Dublin City spokesperson allegedly said that NO decision had been made yet, but that a decision would be made within the next two weeks. Ooops!<\/p>\n

A little later the GAA confirmed that only three concerts will go ahead and the Dublin City spokesperson probably wanted to be swallowed by the ground beneath him\/her.<\/p>\n

So how come it takes 11 weeks to make a decision and then Twitter is told before the applicant? Odd!<\/p>\n

The story continues because Garth Brooks (He originally only had planned two concerts in Dublin, then added one more and then added another two!) has announced that it is now either all five or nothing<\/a>. This is strange considering that initially two was enough. It is also stupid by him that he got involved with that threat. If he cancels all five, his fans will be upset with HIM, not with Dublin City. Until that statement Dublin City (and the opposing residents around Croke Park) were in the main firing line from the Garth Brooks fans’ perspective.<\/p>\n

I’d say this saga is just starting! Watch this space!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
