Hi all!<\/p>\n

**Apologies for the late arrival of this week’s Dublin Event Guide. I had some technical challenges that delayed me significantly!**<\/p>\n

This week will be one of the quietest this summer (unless Dublin Pride is your thing!), but with the July weekends all will change. National Play Day, Street Performance World Championship (now called “City Spectacular”), Dublin City Soul Festival (now called “City Picnic”) and lots more events will come up in July and maybe it is a good thing that we have a slightly quieter week.<\/p>\n

But don’t think there is nothing to do! Dublin Pride is big, but it might not be for everyone. But there is also a Summer Festival in Phoenix Park on Sunday. And the Dublin Flea Market. And the last chance to see the FAT exhibition in the Science Gallery. And a Classic Boat Rally. And an American Football Game. And a great music weekend and market in the Workman’s Club. Did somebody say “quiet”!?!? ;-)<\/p>\n

Thanks a lot to the great Feargal O’R, Scott P, Jackie C, David F, Belinda B and Sibylle D! They read my appeal last week and immediately stood up to help with a donation and they were so generous that from just EUR 30 out of 3 weeks, the amount grew to EUR 170, which is exactly the amount I need every month, so June is saved. Thanks! I know July is already around the corner, but I trust you wonderful people. :-) Thanks for all your help!<\/p>\n

I don’t know exactly what Elisabeth Elliot meant when she said it, but I interpret it this way:<\/p>\n

When we have a new plan, a goal, something we want to achieve in our lives, we eventually (should) come to a point when we plant a seed. This seed is planted because we believe in us being able to achieve what we want. It is planted in faith.<\/p>\n

But along the way, there will be hurdles! Challenges will get us to doubt if we are able to achieve the goal and often we are tempted then to dig up the little plant because we doubt that it will be able to grow into a tree.<\/p>\n

Faith (or trust in your abilities) is good nutrition for the little plant, but doubt is very bad nutrition. So don’t feed your little plant doubt and make sure that you don’t dig up the plant when you are temporarily short of good nutrition!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

This weekend I will possibly go watch the Dublin Pride parade. It is a big event with thousands of participants. If you want to watch the parade, though, check the parade route in the event listing in this Dublin Event Guide. It is a completely different route than you might expect once the parade went down O’Connell Street.<\/p>\n

Dublin Pride is a maybe for me, but the Midsummer Festival in Phoenix Park on Sunday and the Dublin Flea Market are definite destinations. I already went last week to the FAT exhibition in the Science Gallery, so I will leave it to you to go this week (it is the last week!!). Then there is a Classic Boat Rally in Clontarf with added music and entertainment.<\/p>\n

Sport is your thing? Well, with all the football, you probably can’t complain that much and we will have more this week again. To change the scenery a little, you can watch an American Football Game this week.<\/p>\n

And if music is more your area, then go to the Workman’s Club’s Wellington Weekender.<\/p>\n

Giselle – Ballet – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

Monica Loughman Ballet presents the quintessential romantic ballet, Giselle, at the National Concert Hall this June 28th and 29th. Marius Petipa\u2019s classic is a tale of betrayal, the supernatural and a love that transcends death.<\/p>\n

The role of Giselle will be danced by principal of the Lithuanian National Opera Ballet, Olga Konosenko and the part of Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis will be performed by Irish Ballet artist Leanne Se_ton (replace the “_” in her name here with a “x” to get the correct spelling. First performed in Paris in 1841, Giselle is one of the most magnificent and enchanting of the classic ballets.<\/p>\n

New Advertiser for Dublin Bikes<\/h2>\n

Dublin Bikes will be renamed and will get a big ad sticker because Coca-Cola Zero will become the new advertisement partner<\/a> and name sponsor. Some newspapers exitedly announced that the 500,000 that Coca-Cola will pay will result in a further extension of the bike scheme, but that is incorrect – at least for now. Dublin City was for some time looking for a company that would pay 500,000 to cover the running cost.<\/p>\n

I can’t see myself calling dublinbikes ever “Coca-Cola Zero dublinbikes” and I would be surprised if any user ever did. But I guess a cooperation of the Dublin Bikes scheme with a non-sugar soft drink manufacturer is easier acceptable than the “Sports = beer” link that other advertisers want to create with their sports club and sports competition sponsorship.<\/p>\n

People of the Year Award – Open for Nomination<\/h2>\n

Many countries have a system (medals or titles) that allows them to show appreciation for extraordinary people. Ireland does not have such a system, so the People of the Year Awards filled that gap 40 years ago and every year since then deserving people will be honoured and celebrated through this award.<\/p>\n

You can nominate the people that you think are deserving. That could be a sports person (and a certain retiring Rugby player did win the award previously) or it could just be a “nobody” who is doing extraordinary things. You choose!<\/p>\n

The award ceremony will be on 06 December and from now until 05 September you can nominate people that you think are outstanding. Once the nominations are made, a panel of adjudicators will make the final decision.<\/p>\n

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown – Summer of Heritage<\/h2>\n

The The Dun Laoghaire Rathdown “Summer of Heritage” programme starts on 01 July, running over five days a week for ten weeks until 07 September.<\/p>\n

Last year thousands of people visited the various heritage sites across the county and this year the programme has been expanded again. There are events for adults and for children and all are free. The full brochure that lists all events is here<\/a> in PDF format for you to download.<\/p>\n

There are guided tours at the Killiney + Seapoint Martello Towers, Monkstown Castle, Blackrock, The Metals, Cabinteely House, Killiney Hill Park, Historic Dun Laoghaire, a variety of cemeteries, Dundrum, and lots more.<\/p>\n

Dale Chihuly\u2019s vibrant coloured glass installations and opulent Chandeliers hang in many of the world\u2019s most prestigious museums and public spaces including the Victoria and Albert museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Louvre in Paris.<\/p>\n

A world premier of \u2018Ulysses Cylinders\u2019 inspired by James Joyces\u2019s Ulysses will come to the Coach House of Dublin Castle. This collaborative exhibition combines the alchemic artistry of Dale Chihuly with painter Seaver Leslie\u2019s pen and ink drawings to create a unique collection of golden glass Cylinders.<\/p>\n

Working with Leslie\u2019s drawings on paper, artists Mace and Kirkpatrick constructed fragile glass drawings, which Chihuly\u2019s team studio amalgamated into individual Cylinders of glass wrapped in gold leaf. Each drawing offers a visual trigger into selected narratives of Ulysses as recounted by Joyce.<\/p>\n

Breaking The Silence, an organisation of former Israel Defence Force (IDF) combatants present an exhibition of photographs taken by soldiers serving in the West Bank and Gaza. The photographs and the accompanying testimony offer an insight into the tactics used by the IDF to control and disrupt the daily lives of Palestinian civilians, and reveal the psychological and physical damage those tactics have on both the Palestinian people and the soldiers themselves.<\/p>\n

Former Israeli soldiers will be at the gallery to engage directly with visitors and can provide guided tours for groups.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

The Battle of Clontarf Millennium Classic Boat Rally will take place on Saturday and Sunday and the events will take place in the area between the Clontarf Promenade and the Ferrry Terminal.<\/p>\n

On Saturday the Flotilla of classic wooden boats will commence at 13:00 from the North Bank. On land on the promenade there will be music from the HX Brass Band from 13:00 to 15:00 and the sail by of the Flotilla at the start finish line will be commentated on by Ian Sargent. Afterwards on in the Club grounds, there will be BBQ burgers from 1500 to 1900, a bouncy castle and live music in the marquee from 1500 onwards.<\/p>\n

Sunday will be similar to Saturday plus a club race from 13:00.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Pride Parade takes place today and it is one of the highlights of the Pride Week, a celebration of the LGBT community. The parade assembles from 12:00 on Parnell Square and leaves at 13:45.<\/p>\n

The parade route is quite unusual: From Parnell Square the parade goes down O’Connell Street, then turns left onto the North Quays along the Liffey until Butt Bridge (the road bridge at Liberty Hall). Dublin hosts The Plant Biology Europe FESPB\/EPSO Congress 2014, which takes place in The Convention Centre Dublin from 23-29 June. The Congress will see delegates from over 50 countriescome to Dublin to engage in scientific debate and exchange on plant science.<\/p>\n

Prof Bruce Osborne is President of The Federation of European Societies of Plant Biology (FESPB) and he asked Dr Niamh Shaw to develop a short show about plants. Sadly Niamh can’t keep a plant alive. So a challenge was set, Niamh was going to find her ‘green thumb’ and Bruce was going to guide her journey.<\/p>\n

Find out if Niamh has succeeded in keeping her plants alive and even resurrect dead ones under the watchful eye of a leading plant biologist.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

Pop-up Opera Performances – “Things we throw away”<\/h2>\n

The Dublin City Public Art Programme presents the performance of 5 new operas as pop-up operas in Dublin on 04+05 July. Wide Open Opera will run the events (music by Brian Irvine and text by John McIlduff). The operas are inspired by lives of real people in Dublin.<\/p>\n

The performances will take place in public places on Friday and Saturday, but exact performance locations will only be posted on Wide Open Opera website (http:\/\/www.wideopenopera.ie<\/a>) on the morning of each performance. Each opera will be performed 4 times with 20 short performances in total over the two days.<\/p>\n

The performers will sing live and will be accompanied by a specially recorded soundtrack, performed by the RT\u00c9 Concert Orchestra conducted by Fergus Sheil, and one will feature a specially convened community choir.<\/p>\n

After the first 15 performances in surprise locations, all five operas will be performed as a cycle in Dame Court, Dublin 2 at 19:00 on Saturday 05 July.<\/p>\n

Mrs Brown’s Boys<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, this is my “This is Odd!” this week: Mrs Brown’s Boys. It is such an odd TV programme and it is even odder that there is a film now. Interestingly people either find it VERY funny or they are left COMPLETELY cold, it seems there is only black or white and not much in between. Someone compared it last week to Marmite: You either love or hate it. Very true! In what “camp” do you belong?<\/p>\n

I am left cold, unfortunately. Brendan O’Carroll has never managed to make me laugh and it seems that won’t change. I will go back to the good old “Father Ted”, which still makes me laugh every time. :-)<\/p>\n

It seems in the UK, people who love the programme – the incredible number of 10 mio people watch it there. WHY!? – did get some serious shock last week when Brendan Carroll was on the Graham Norton show. They didn’t realise that “Mrs Brown” is a man.
