Hi all!<\/p>\n

The coming weekend will be quiet & busy and that is like sweet & sour food. The food is sweet and sour at the same time and the weekend is quiet and busy at the same time.<\/p>\n

What I mean with that, is that there are a good few events taking place, but there is not ONE big event. The great thing also is that the good weather (including the relatively warm temperatures) are lasting into next week. A great opportunity to get out and enjoy the outdoor aspect of Dublin more.<\/p>\n

Below are my two weekly appeals, but the first one is very critical this month. Every week I am spending 30-35 hours of my spare time to work on the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and I don’t expect you to compensate me for that. I get sometimes lovely and supportive messages from some of you and that is my reward. Thanks! However, I do need help with the cost of EUR 170 every month and that didn’t go too well lately. This month is already in its last week and in whole June only EUR 30 of donations arrived with me. So I need another EUR 140 in the next 9 days, Without the EUR 170 Euro of your help every month, I will not be able to keep the Dublin Event Guide going.<\/p>\n

And here are the two very important appeals:<\/p>\n

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Recently the donations dropped significantly. Maybe it is the bad times, but EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints! This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This weekend I will go the People’s Art Exhibition and to the Science Gallery (last week of the curretn exhiition!!) Then I will be in Phoenix Park either for the Bike Week event on Sunday or just to spend some time in the park when the weather is nice. On Sunday I will also try to go to the Dublin Kite Festival. If you have kids, consider Active 8 in Shanganagh Park.<\/p>\n

This is just small subset, but you also need time for BBQ in the garden or a wlak or some other outdoor fun because who knows, this could be the end of the summer for 2014! We are hoping it isn’t, but we live in Ireland, you never know.<\/p>\n

Monica Loughman Ballet presents the quintessential romantic ballet, Giselle, at the National Concert Hall this June 28th and 29th. Marius Petipa\u2019s classic is a tale of betrayal, the supernatural and a love that transcends death.<\/p>\n

The role of Giselle will be danced by principal of the Lithuanian National Opera Ballet, Olga Konosenko and the part of Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis will be performed by Irish Ballet artist Leanne Se_ton (replace the “_” in her name here with a “x” to get the correct spelling. First performed in Paris in 1841, Giselle is one of the most magnificent and enchanting of the classic ballets.<\/p>\n

New Advertiser for Dublin Bikes<\/h2>\n

Dublin Bikes will be renamed and will get a big ad sticker because Coca-Cola Zero will become the new advertisement partner<\/a> and name sponsor. Some newspapers exitedly announced that the 500,000 that Coca-Cola will pay will result in a further extension of the bike scheme, but that is incorrect – at least for now. Dublin City was for some time looking for a company that would pay 500,000 to cover the running cost.<\/p>\n

I can’t see myself calling dublinbikes ever “Coca-Cola Zero dublinbikes” and I would be surprised if any user ever did. But I guess a cooperation of the Dublin Bikes scheme with a non-sugar soft drink manufacturer is easier acceptable than the “Sports = beer” link that other advertisers want to create with their sports club and sports competition sponsorship.<\/p>\n

Sending letters is getting a lot more expensive<\/h2>\n

It is not really a surprise that the postage prices for letters are continually going up: I haven’t received a letter for years (apart from a few bills). And if that is the same for you, it means a company like An Post will increase the prices<\/a> until NOBODY will send a letter anymore.<\/p>\n

From 21 July, a standard letter will increase from 60 cent to 68 cent, and a letter to another country will increase from 90 cent to EUR 1.<\/p>\n

Breaking The Silence, an organisation of former Israel Defence Force (IDF) combatants present an exhibition of photographs taken by soldiers serving in the West Bank and Gaza. The photographs and the accompanying testimony offer an insight into the tactics used by the IDF to control and disrupt the daily lives of Palestinian civilians, and reveal the psychological and physical damage those tactics have on both the Palestinian people and the soldiers themselves.<\/p>\n

Former Israeli soldiers will be at the gallery to engage directly with visitors and can provide guided tours for groups.<\/p>\n

This is the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from http:\/\/www.aditiyoga.org\/<\/a> and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required.<\/p>\n

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

Dublin Kite Fest is a Dublin City Event on Dollymount Strand and it is a family event with lots of free kite building workshops for kids, but also with kite flying demonstrations by expert and somewhere I even found a statement that said some kite flying competitions will take place as well (but no further detail is provided).<\/p>\n

\nIt would be nice to know if there will be any food\/drinks sold at the event, but because it is not mentioned, you might want to bring a picnic.<\/p>\n

I wasn’t at the event last year, but I heard lots of positive comments about it. The weather is still expected to be nice, so if you want to get out with your kids (or without), this is a definite option.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

Dr Niamh Shaw, scientist turned performer & Prof Bruce Osborne, Plant Ecophysiology Research Group, UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science and UCD Earth Institute in association with EuroScience present ‘Speaking with Plants’.<\/p>\n

Dublin hosts The Plant Biology Europe FESPB\/EPSO Congress 2014, which takes place in The Convention Centre Dublin from 23-29 June. The Congress will see delegates from over 50 countriescome to Dublin to engage in scientific debate and exchange on plant science.<\/p>\n

Prof Bruce Osborne is President of The Federation of European Societies of Plant Biology (FESPB) and he asked Dr Niamh Shaw to develop a short show about plants. Sadly Niamh can’t keep a plant alive. So a challenge was set, Niamh was going to find her ‘green thumb’ and Bruce was going to guide her journey.<\/p>\n

Find out if Niamh has succeeded in keeping her plants alive and even resurrect dead ones under the watchful eye of a leading plant biologist.<\/p>\n

Other contributors to the discussion will include Mathew Jebb, Director of the National Botanic Gardens, Thomas P. Shaw, Secretary of County Louth Beekeepers Association (Niamh\u2019s green fingered Dad) and horticulturist, garden writer and garden designer, Fionnuala Fallon the gardening correspondent for The Irish Times.<\/p>\n

Dublin Bikes, the nonsense and the running cost<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Dublin Bikes scheme is a huge success. A massive amount of people (42,000!) have subscribed and a staggering number of trips are made every day (nearly a mio in the first half of 2014). Nobody had expected that it would be SOO successful, and it is great to see that the doubters were wrong.<\/p>\n

But there is also a grey side to the Dublin Bike scheme. The first aspect is that despite its success, Dublin City Council decided to increase the yearly cost by 100% (!!!). EUR 20 per year is still not outrageous, but it definitely feels wrong if “because more people signed up than we ever expected, we will double the price”.<\/p>\n

The scheme saw some great expansions with lots more stations and lots more bikes and hopefully the expansions will continue, but none of this has to do with Coca-Cola becoming the name sponsor. The City Council had decided<\/a> in May 2013 that the number of stations would grow to 100 and the number of bikes would increase to 1500 by summer 2014. The exited RTE headline<\/a> “Dublin Bikes to treble under deal with soft drinks manufacturer” is just nonsense. The RTE journalists should have read their own article from May 2013. But not only RTE got it wrong. The Journal<\/a> got it wrong too. The Irish Times<\/a> luckily didn’t write the nonsense, but the Irish Independent<\/a> made it even worse: In their article the number of bikes will grow to 15,000 by the end of the summer thanks to Coca Cola. Sure 15,000! Dohh!<\/p>\n

The other grey area about the Dublin Bike Scheme is the running cost. The capital expenditure for the expansion seems to be covered by NTA money, the dubious JC Deceaux deal where they got an insane amount of free advertisement space for just 150 (or so) bikes provided secured the base stock. And then there is our money: 42,000 people paying EUR 20 is a neat 840,000.<\/p>\n

But oddly Dublin City claims that the running cost of the Dublin Bikes Scheme is 2mio per year. 2 mio?? Does anybody know how many employees they have? There will be employee cost, office cost, bike repair cost and then the few vans\/trucks that the have to re-distribute bikes. Can that cost 2mio? It sounds outrageously high.<\/p>\n

Dublin City, if you give me half of it, I will run the scheme as good as it is done at the moment! Ring me!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
