Hi all!<\/a><\/p>\n

A friend told me during the week that the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) has competition. She heard on 98FM that there was an AIB sponsored “Free Events Guide”. Interesting!<\/a><\/p>\n

It turns out that the AIB seems to promote their mortgages with a bit of information about free events. The events list is prepared by the marketing company Media Central, which is also responsible for ad sales on 98FM and Spin 1038. The website is here<\/a>, but – oh shock – why are there only four events? Is that all they could find? Where are the other 180 events that you get in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)? And why are the events outdated? When I wrote this (on Friday), the Riverfest was still listed. That took place TWO weeks ago. AIB completely up to date, it seems! ;-)<\/p>\n

No competition! :-P Mind you, if someone provided something that is fully comparable with the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), that wouldn’t be too bas. I could then take a few weeks off! :-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Until then, you will get this e-mail magazine every week! BUT I need your continued help, otherwise it will have to come to an end at some stage. Especially with the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, I need help. Please read the following paragraphs,<\/a><\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

What a super busy week!<\/a><\/p>\n

The IFI Open Day is this Saturday, Garden Squares Day also takes place. Then there is Youbloom and Various Voices and another few days of the Newpark Jazz Grad Fest on the music side. For the active people, the Bikeweek starts this Saturday and the Irish Cargobike Championship is on Sunday. And on Monday is the oddness of Bloomsday. Street Feast is on Sunday. Two doggy walks “Walk for Greyhounds” and “Bark in the Park” (on Sunday) will keep dog lovers busy. For art lovers the Dublin Biennial is the event to go to and for the LBGT community Dublin Pride will commence.<\/a><\/p>\n

If I now had to choose from that list, I would go to the Garden Squares Day and to Youbloom, then to the Cargobike Championship and to the Dublin Biennial. I think that will be enough to keep me busy.<\/a><\/p>\n

Oh and on Sunday evening I will be in the Olympia Theatre to see “Mahagonny – The Rise and Fall of a City”. Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill wrote this story of a Paradise City of Excess, of Loving, Fighting, Eating and Drinking in 1930 and it is in form of an Opera.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is presented by Sky Ireland, Rough Magic<\/a>, and *” target=”_blank” style=”color:#cc2979;text-decoration:none;”>Opera Theatre Company<\/a> and opened in the Olympia Theatre on Friday night (13 June) There will be only 6 performances and it sounds really interesting, so check it out ” target=”_blank” style=”color:#cc2979;text-decoration:none;”>here<\/a>. It is not free (EUR 20- EUR 75), but with all the money you saved by going to all the free events, you could afford this maybe.<\/p>\n

Monica Loughman Ballet presents the quintessential romantic ballet, Giselle, at the National Concert Hall this June 28th and 29th. Marius Petipa\u2019s classic is a tale of betrayal, the supernatural and a love that transcends death.<\/a><\/p>\n

The role of Giselle will be danced by principal of the Lithuanian National Opera Ballet, Olga Konosenko and the part of Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis will be performed by Irish Ballet artist Leanne Se_ton (replace the “_” in her name here with a “x” to get the correct spelling. First performed in Paris in 1841, Giselle is one of the most magnificent and enchanting of the classic ballets.<\/a><\/p>\n

The National Library of Ireland has decided to enhance its provision of Summer genealogy services and has decided to use the services from expert companies Eneclann<\/a> and Ancestor Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Breaking The Silence, an organisation of former Israel Defence Force (IDF) combatants present an exhibition of photographs taken by soldiers serving in the West Bank and Gaza. The photographs and the accompanying testimony offer an insight into the tactics used by the IDF to control and disrupt the daily lives of Palestinian civilians, and reveal the psychological and physical damage those tactics have on both the Palestinian people and the soldiers themselves.<\/a><\/p>\n

Former Israeli soldiers will be at the gallery to engage directly with visitors and can provide guided tours for groups.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every year the Dublin Civic Trust runs the Dublin Garden Square Day, but is not very successful in spreading the word it seems. I found the information by pure coincidence.<\/a><\/p>\n

Enjoy walking tours, open houses and entertainment across the city’s squares on this Saturday. The free events take place in each of the five Georgian squares: St. Stephen’s Green, Merrion Square and Fitzwilliam Square on the south side and Parnell Square and Mountjoy Square on the north side.<\/a><\/p>\n

The participants and lead artist Liz Nilsson will give an overview of what Wandering Methods is, show some of the craft pieces the group have created, and spend time working with you to help create something simple and fun \u2013 and hopefully you\u2019ll come away with some new skills that you can use at home.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from http:\/\/www.aditiyoga.org\/<\/a> and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required. <\/p>\n

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.<\/a><\/p>\n

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.<\/a><\/div>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/a><\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/a><\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Various Voices Dublin festival is a series of free concerts in Dublin. Various Voices is an international choral festival for LGBT choirs and choruses. No tickets are required for the city centre performances: Just show up at any point during the concert to enjoy the music. You can stay for as long as you wish, or even concert-hop from one venue to another during the day<\/a><\/p>\n

As part of National Bike Week 2014 D\u00fan Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is organising a Fun Family 6km cycle on Saturday. The Bay 6km cycle will start at Newtownsmith Green between the Dun Laoghaire Pier and the 40 Foot in Sandycove and will go along the coast to Sandycove, 40-Foot, Harbour Road, Dalkey Village and back to D\u00fan Laoghaire through Glasthule.<\/a><\/p>\n

This cycle route is suitable for all ages and will be guided. Goody bags and refreshments will be on offer for everybody who completes the course. A number of bike shops will be available to carry out basic maintenance and repairs.<\/a><\/p>\n

Participation is free, but the website says that “pre-registration is essential”. Since it might be a little late for that, I would risk it and arrive even without pre-registration. You might not get a goodie bag, but hopefully you can take part.<\/a><\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/a><\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/a><\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/a><\/p>\n

The Irish Cargobike Championship takes place and it is an event that is part of the Bikeweek. On Sunday cargobike users and enthusiasts are called to sign up to participate in that competition and if you are not a cargobike owner, you can come along and try out a cargobike.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be a range of fun races such as the relay race, the slalom and the traditional egg and spoon race. The only difference is that the entrants will compete whilst riding a cargobike! A highlight of the year for some, a non-sensical celebration for others:<\/a><\/p>\n

Bloomsday celebrates a totally fictional day (Thursday 16 June 1904) from the novel Ulysses by James Joyce. The day is named after fictional character Leopold Bloom, the central character in Ulysses. The novel follows the life and thoughts of Leopold Bloom and a host of other characters from 08:00 on 16 June 1904 through to the early hours of the following morning.<\/a><\/p>\n

Because it is all made up by James Joyce the non-fans see it as mad as dressing up as a Star Trek character, the fans on the other hand completely immerse themselves into the book, get dressed up, speak differently and eat differently, as the large amount of Bloomsday-related events (free and non-free) on the website below show.<\/a><\/p>\n

Some interesting and some weird events take place and MANY events are not free. One of the stranger events is “Feeding the Seagulls” and obviously as a true “Joycean” you will only feed them on Bachelor’s Walk and feed them with “Banbury Cakes” instead of using just normal bread. The feeding takes place from 13:10-13:40.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Constitutions and Culture Wars: Northern Ireland, the Irish State and the North-South Dimension” is the title of a conference at the Institute for British-Irish Studies.<\/a><\/p>\n

Sixteen years after the Good Friday Agreement and after a period of stabilisation of the institutions and completion of implementation, we appear to be re-entering a phase of instability and uncertainty. There has been much discussion of the British role in Northern Ireland and the increasingly positive East-West linkages, in the context of uncertain Scottish and EU relations. This conference focuses on a less-studied aspect of the situation: the North-South linkages and their impact on changing popular politics in Northern Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Biennial 2014 is an International Contemporary Art Exhibition featuring the works of 55 International and National Artists. During the National Bike Week, the fourth yearly “Bike to Work – Lunchtime City Cycle” takes place on Wed 18 June.<\/a><\/p>\n

Starting from Grand Canal Square, the 30min (5km) cycle with over 2,500 cyclists is for everyone who can make it. The event is run by Dublin City Council and there will be spot prizes for best individual fancy dress, best team fancy dress and fanciest helmet.<\/a><\/p>\n

Grand Canal Square will be turned into a bicycle market with a range of vendors selling bike related goods and food vendors providing you with your lunch.<\/a><\/p>\n

The cycle will go along the Samuel Beckett Bridge, the Custom House, the newly opened Rosie Hackett Bridge, Trinity College and Merrion Square.<\/a><\/p>\n

With both Irish dancing and sean-n\u00f3s dancing represented – and hopefully some c\u00e9il\u00ed dancing later on in the evening – this will be a celebration of Irish culture that is open to everyone. The dancers will be accompanied by young traditional musicians Radie Peate (concertina), Robert Harvey (flute), Luke Deaton (accordion), and Ultan O\u2019Brien (fiddle).<\/a><\/p>\n

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands\/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Biennial 2014 is an International Contemporary Art Exhibition featuring the works of 55 International and National Artists. In addition to the gallery space, the Biennial will present film screenings, along with a series of performances, workshops and discussion groups throughout the course of the exhibition.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition will be on show in the CHQ building in the IFSC from 13-22 June (daily 12:00-18:30).<\/a><\/p>\n

Ireland not at the Worldcup? It’s the GAA’s fault!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every time there is a qualification round for the football Worldcup or the European Championship there is avast amount of Irish people terribly disappointed that the Irish team doesn’t qualify. Yes, Ireland made it before and it would be NICE to qualify again, but the odds certainly are against Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n

Apart from the fact that there are virtually no good Irish footballers who play in Ireland, the size of the country alone makes it quite difficult to have a good pool. But, the biggest problem is in my opinion the GAA. It’s not that the GAA actively stops the Irish team from qualifying, but because there are soo many other sports in Ireland (Gaelic Football, Hurling and I guess we should mention the (non-GAA-related) Rugby as well), there is a massive “talent dilution”.<\/a><\/p>\n

So many kids play GAA sports or Rugby that the talent is elsewhere and for that reason, I speculate that it is the rarest occurrence that Ireland will qualify for any important football tournament. It could happen again, but there is also the possibility that it will NEVER happen again.<\/a><\/p>\n

Imagine the same amount of money and effort was invested in football as goes into GAA and Rugby!? It would mean that you could develop young kids from early on to become really good. But that will never happen.<\/a><\/p>\n

The consequence is that Ireland will be ALWAYS the World Champion in Gaelic Football and in Hurling, but might never again play at the final round of the Football\/Soccer Worldcup or at the European Championships.<\/a><\/p>\n

Now the Irish football fans have to become realistic, but oddly that will never happen either.<\/a><\/div>\n
