HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), if I may say so myself! :-)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is 7 years old this week and in these 7 years (or 364 weeks) I didn’t miss one week. Some of you are subscribers from the very beginning or at least from early on. Initially it was a mail shorter than this Introduction and was only about one single event. But then I expanded it and included more weekend events. I ignored events during the week for a while. As I explain regularly, in the beginning this was a mail to just about 10 friends. But people talk and recommend good stuff and this week we have arrived at more than 21,100 subscribers.<\/p>\n

I had never expected that this short mail to a few friends would grow to the dimensions we have today, but when I realised that there was a good bit interest there, I set my target high… and until now, I exceeded the target every time. My long term goal is to reach 50,000 subscribers, but that is well over double of the current subscriber count, so you can imagine that it will take another little while. On the other hand, we could realistically achieve it nearly instantly. If every current subscriber just got TWO more people to subscribe, we would already reach more than 60,000 subscribers and TWO is not a lot when you think about it.<\/p>\n

I do know however, that these are theoretical mind games because unfortunately not everyone would play along, but if you break it down like that 50,000 suddenly doesn’t seem too far away, right!?<\/p>\n

This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This week the “BIG” events are a little sparse, but there are mad, intriguing and interesting small-er events and they should keep you busy. More than 180 events! I’d say you find something.<\/p>\n

Belonging to the UNUSUAL category, there is an International Jugger Tournament on Sat+Sun. Interesting are the MythFest Family Day in Trinity College on Saturday and the Irish Wolfhound Show on Sunday in Farmleigh House.<\/p>\n

But also watch out for the Spanish Navy Sailing Ship that you can visit on Sun or Mon\/Tues\/Wed. And check the Newpark Jazz Grad Fest with LOTS of Jazz gigs.<\/p>\n

The reliable and great Fusion Sunday World Culture Market is taking place on Sunday and there are John Ford Ireland Symposium Film Screenings on Sat and Sun.<\/p>\n

And then – great for some and a curse for others – on Thursday the World Cup in Brazil starts with 64 football games ahead of us.<\/p>\n

New Mayor for Dublin<\/h2>\n
\n

Over the years the topic “Lord Mayor of Dublin” has come many times here because every year there is a new one and with the exception of maybe two (being generous!) in the last 10 years, NONE of the mayors left a lasting impact as far as I can see. This is not necessarily their fault, the system doesn’t allow them to leave much of an impact because there only real job is to open shops, turn on Christmas lights and the recent mayor even opened a changing room somewhere. Like the President of Ireland their job is mainly representational. We absolutely need a directly elected mayor, but that will take a few more decades.<\/p>\n

In the meantime the former Mayor (Oisin Quinn) came to the end of his year (and he also lost his seat as a councillor in the last election. Oops!) and a new Mayor has been picked<\/a>. Christy Burke is his name and all I could find about his achievement (he is in Dublin City Council since 1985) is that he was a member of Sinn Fein, was in prison twice because of his Sinn Fein membership and left the party just after the election in 2009 because he felt they didn’t support him enough. Don’t blame me for not finding more about his achievements!! He doesn’t even seem to have a functioning website so that HE can tell us what he has achieved. He will be Mayor until June 2015 and we’ll see if in 12 month we know more about him.<\/p>\n

By the way, I don’t know the new Mayor, so he could be a super great guy….but no online resource and no newspaper article was able to tell me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Old Man’s Home – The Story of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham<\/h2>\n
\n

“Old Man\u2019s House” is a new exhibition at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham which will take visitors back in time to experience what life was really like in Ireland\u2019s first-ever military hospital. The Royal Hospital was built in 1680 as a retirement home for Irish and British soldiers and the exhibition explores the stories of these soldiers together with the stories of the hospital staff and its historic environs, from the earliest beginnings, through to its restoration and the founding of the Irish Museum of Modern Art.<\/p>\n

The “Old Man\u2019s House” Exhibition at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham opened on 27 May 2014 and runs Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00-17:00 and on Sundays and Bank Holidays from 12:00-17:00. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

Irish-American film director John Ford is regarded as one of the most influential and important filmmaker of his generation. He was born in Maine, USA in 1895 and died in 1973 and his career spanned more than 50 years. He created more than 140 films, including numerous classics such as \u2018The Searchers\u2019, \u2018The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance\u2019, \u2018The Grapes of Wrath\u2019, \u2018The Quiet Man\u2019 and \u2018How Green Was My Valley\u2019.<\/p>\n

The John Ford Ireland Symposium is an event for budding filmmakers, movie lovers and John Ford fans. There will be film screenings, panel discussions, public interviews, music for the screen events and performances, master classes and more. The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

Irish-American film director John Ford is regarded as one of the most influential and important filmmaker of his generation. He was born in Maine, USA in 1895 and died in 1973 and his career spanned more than 50 years. He created more than 140 films, including numerous classics such as \u2018The Searchers\u2019, \u2018The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance\u2019, \u2018The Grapes of Wrath\u2019, \u2018The Quiet Man\u2019 and \u2018How Green Was My Valley\u2019.<\/p>\n

The John Ford Ireland Symposium is an event for budding filmmakers, movie lovers and John Ford fans. There will be film screenings, panel discussions, public interviews, music for the screen events and performances, master classes and more. The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

The Spanish Naval Ship “Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano” is a 112m long four-masted sailing ship and “Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano” will be in Dublin from Sat 07-Thurs 12 June.<\/p>\n

Led by Captain Enrique Torres Pi\u00f1eyro, the \u201cElcano\u201d is used as a training ship for the Royal Spanish Navy, preparing its Officers for long periods at sea. When the ship will arrive in Dublin there will be 191 crew on board, who will participate in a five-day programme of engagements in Dublin to promote Spanish-Irish cultural exchange.<\/p>\n

Part of this will be a number of Open Days when you can visit the ship for free. Visits are possible on Sun, Mon, Tues and Wed:<\/p>\n

Spanish Naval Ship “Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano”<\/h2>\n

The Spanish Naval Ship “Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano” is a 112m long four-masted sailing ship and “Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano” will be in Dublin from Sat 07-Thurs 12 June.<\/p>\n

Led by Captain Enrique Torres Pi\u00f1eyro, the \u201cElcano\u201d is used as a training ship for the Royal Spanish Navy, preparing its Officers for long periods at sea. When the ship will arrive in Dublin there will be 191 crew on board, who will participate in a five-day programme of engagements in Dublin to promote Spanish-Irish cultural exchange.<\/p>\n

Part of this will be a number of Open Days when you can visit the ship for free. Visits are possible on Sun, Mon, Tues and Wed:<\/p>\n

Spanish Naval Ship “Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano”<\/h2>\n

The Spanish Naval Ship “Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano” is a 112m long four-masted sailing ship and “Juan Sebasti\u00e1n de Elcano” will be in Dublin from Sat 07-Thurs 12 June.<\/p>\n

Led by Captain Enrique Torres Pi\u00f1eyro, the \u201cElcano\u201d is used as a training ship for the Royal Spanish Navy, preparing its Officers for long periods at sea. When the ship will arrive in Dublin there will be 191 crew on board, who will participate in a five-day programme of engagements in Dublin to promote Spanish-Irish cultural exchange.<\/p>\n

Part of this will be a number of Open Days when you can visit the ship for free. Visits are possible on Sun, Mon, Tues and Wed:<\/p>\n

After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.<\/p>\n

It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.<\/p>\n

Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. If you know what to expect, you will hopefully not be disappointed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The concert coincides with the graduation of the current choristers. The 2014 Foodcycle will take place during the Bike Week and consists of a Northside and a Southside Cycle. The routes (see below) take in a range of community gardens and allotments and both routes will finish at the Christchurch Garden festival at around 15:00.<\/p>\n

Street Feast 2014 will take place on Sun 15 June and you should take some action;<\/p>\n

Street Feast is a day of local lunches across Ireland hosted by you and your neighbours. It could be out on the street, in a local park or in your front garden and apart from eating good food, the idea behind is to celebrate your local community and meet new people who live near you.<\/p>\n

Bike to Work – Lunchtime Cycle<\/h2>\n

During the National Bike Week, the fourth yearly “Bike to Work – Lunchtime City Cycle” takes place on Wed 18 June.<\/p>\n

Starting from Grand Canal Square, the 30min (5km) cycle with over 2,500 cyclists is for everyone who can make it. The event is run by Dublin City Council and there will be spot prizes for best individual fancy dress, best team fancy dress and fanciest helmet.<\/p>\n

Grand Canal Square will be turned into a bicycle market with a range of vendors selling bike related goods and food vendors providing you with your lunch.<\/p>\n

The cycle will go along the Samuel Beckett Bridge, the Custom House, the newly opened Rosie Hackett Bridge, Trinity College and Merrion Square.<\/p>\n

UPC tells us that 25% of Irish businesses are not online – What a shock!<\/strong><\/p>\n


\n<\/strong>UPC, the Internet Service provider (who also provides TV services), tells us<\/a> that 25% of Irish businesses are not online and that this is a horrible fact. Allegedly up to 150,000 new direct and indirect jobs could be created by 2020 if more business was carried out online. And the study says that the value of Ireland’s internet economy will grow from EUR 8.4bn a year at the moment to EUR 21.1bn by 2020.<\/p>\n

I have no better numbers, but to me some of these findings seem to be a whole lot of nonsense!<\/p>\n

Think about it: Does every type of business need an online presence? I don’t think so. There are many sectors where an online presence is in no way a means to improve business or increase revenue. Sometimes people think that nowadays all business should at least have a simple website so that they can be found, but having a website doesn’t automatically make you findable. Google et al work a little different. Have heard of Search Engine Optimisation? It is the attempt to get your website on the first page because it is not much use if you are on page 30 or so of a Google Search. Nobody will find you there.<\/p>\n

And the other thing about the Internet Economy? I buy a lot of things online. The study thinks Irish companies should pull oup their socks so that I won’t buy in China or USA or Germany or UK anymore. but interestingly the products I buy online I buy because I get them SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper when I buy them in China directly than from a seller in Ireland. Recently I bought a kick scooter (long story!!!! :-) ) and I bought it from New York. Why? Because you can’t get anything comparable in Europe. I could have bought from a re-seller in the UK, but buying directly and sorting import taxes etc myself was EUR 50 cheaper than buying from a European reseller (and probably would have been EUR 150 cheaper than buying from an Irish reseller if there had been one).<\/p>\n

So, dear UPC (or Amarach Consulting who carried out the survey), I wouldn’t be able to afford to spend a cent more in Ireland, even if the plumber or brickie from down the road suddenly had a website.<\/p>\n

Very odd conclusions full of wrong assumptions in this study!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
