If you regularly check the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page, you know that I wasn’t sure on Friday morning if there will be a Dublin Event Guide at all this week. I have hurt my back and while it has improved a bit since Tuesday, sitting for long hours is the worst for it. Because of this, it looked bad on Thursday night. But, I fought through it and got the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) finished. A small amount of events didn’t make it in, but all relevant events are included. Thanks for your huge support on Facebook! I appreciate it and I am happy that I can thank you with a Dublin Event Guide! :-)<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This week you will find me at the non-free Bloom in the Park and also at the free Dublin Port Riverfest. If you have curious kids, bring them to Shanganagh Park for the Science and Technology event “How?”. And if you like music, definitely check out the “Forbidden Fruit and the City” gigs. They are – as far as I can see – not very well advertised, so you might not have heard about it yet. All Forbidden Fruit and the City events are free and you might find an uncut diamond among them. ;-)<\/p>\n

Anything else? Yes, there is Bloom Fringe with a vast amount of events this Saturday. All garden related, if that is your thing. And then there is the Woman’s World exhibition in the RDS if that interests you.<\/p>\n

Next week, look out for the MythFest, a festival in TCD that is for everyone who like storytelling and Irish mythology and also look out for the Green Drinks Dublin event on Tuesday with a talk about the misunderstood moths.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Yes, Long live the “Laya Healthcare City Spectacular”. It was announced last week that an event will take place again this year (from 11-13 July in Merrion Square), but it won’t be the geniusly named “Street Performance World Championship” anymore, instead it has been renamed into “City Spectacular”.<\/p>\n

I am not yet completely convinced that the new name is an improvement, but I am assured that the content of the three day festival will get better and that the street performance aspect is still the main focus of the event. So let’s hope for the best! I was a massive fan of the Street Performance World Championship and I hope I will become a big fan of the City Spectacular as well.<\/p>\n

By coincidence I found a Facebook Page that you have to know about: “Dublin Speaks Free” is a group of native language teachers who are passionate about language and who would like that everyone has a chance to learn a language and socialize in a very friendly environment.<\/p>\n

The “Dublin Speaks Free” initiative has native speaker teachers and also provides all class material to the students. The classes are free, but donations are very welcome and even needed to cover cost for materials etc.<\/p>\n

They currently provide Mondays Italian Beginner at 18:00, Spanish Beginner at 19:00 and English Intermediate at 20:00. On Tuesdays there is French Beginner at 18:00, Spanish Intermediate at 19:00 and German Beginner at 20:00.<\/p>\n

The classes take place in the Kings Inn Pub in Bolton Street, Dublin 1 and there is a big room reserved for the group.<\/p>\n

Over the June Bank Holiday weekend “Bloom in the Park”, the big gardening event in Phoenix Park, will take place and related, but unconnected a new gardening event has been created that will happen for the first time this year. The event is called “Bloom Fringe” and will consist of a large number of events with a gardening theme.<\/p>\n

Bloom Fringe is a collective of the most creative enthusiasts and professionals to showcase works from the world of gardening, sustainability, architecture, food, fashion and more. The garden-related events will take place in pop-up venues in parks, gardens, lane-ways and Dublin City Centre as well as in permanent venues such as caf\u00e9s, shops etc.<\/p>\n

Over 30,000 women are expected over the weekend (and it helps that every Women’s Mini Marathon participant in Dublin has to go there to collect race number etc).<\/p>\n

This will be the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from http:\/\/www.aditiyoga.org\/<\/a> and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required.<\/p>\n

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.<\/p>\n

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

Forbidden Fruit is the (non-free) festival at the Irish Museum od Modern Art this weekend. Headliners are The Flaming Lips, 2 Many DJs and Bell X1.<\/p>\n

But even if you will not afford yourself the tickets for Forbidden Fruit, you can benefit from the event because for the first time this year, there will be a 2-day “Forbidden Fruit in the city” music trail, which is completely free.<\/p>\n

A total of 20 bands have been chosen from last year’s Hard Working Class Heroes festival and they will perform acoustic sets in venues like Twisted Pepper, The Church and HMV Grafton Street.<\/p>\n

With exhibitors and experts from the worlds of Fashion, Health, Food, Beauty and Hair, Women\u2019s Health and Fitness, Wellbeing it is the largest show for Women in Ireland. Over 30,000 women are expected over the weekend (and it helps that every Women’s Mini Marathon participant in Dublin has to go there to collect race number etc).<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

Forbidden Fruit is the (non-free) festival at the Irish Museum od Modern Art this weekend. Headliners are The Flaming Lips, 2 Many DJs and Bell X1.<\/p>\n

But even if you will not afford yourself the tickets for Forbidden Fruit, you can benefit from the event because for the first time this year, there will be a 2-day “Forbidden Fruit in the city” music trail, which is completely free.<\/p>\n

A total of 20 bands have been chosen from last year’s Hard Working Class Heroes festival and they will perform acoustic sets in venues like Twisted Pepper, The Church and HMV Grafton Street.<\/p>\n

The Flora Woman’s Mini Marathon is a hugely popular event that takes place every year on the June Bank Holiday. In 2013 the staggering amount of 40,717 women participated.<\/p>\n

It is a 10km run\/jog\/walk\/crawl from Baggot Street to Booterstown, then via Nutley Lane to the Stillorgan Dual Carriage Way. The the course takes a little loop towards Stillorgan before it turns back to Donnybrook and the run finishes in Fitzwilliam Street. A map is here<\/a>. In previous years the route was somewhat different and the finish was at Stephen’s Green, this has changed!!<\/p>\n

It is not a free event and you can’t register for it anyway anymore, but you can still cheer on the participants on Monday. They appreciate your support along the route!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.<\/p>\n

MythFest will feature 10 new plays inspired by the stories of ancient Irish mythology and folklore. The plays are repeated every day from Tuesday until Friday.<\/p>\n

Irish-American film director John Ford is regarded as one of the most influential and important filmmaker of his generation. He was born in Maine, USA in 1895 and died in 1973 and his career spanned more than 50 years. He created more than 140 films, including numerous classics such as \u2018The Searchers\u2019, \u2018The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance\u2019, \u2018The Grapes of Wrath\u2019, \u2018The Quiet Man\u2019 and \u2018How Green Was My Valley\u2019.<\/p>\n

The John Ford Ireland Symposium is an event for budding filmmakers, movie lovers and John Ford fans. There will be film screenings, panel discussions, public interviews, music for the screen events and performances, master classes and more. All events are ticketed, but a good few are free, so it is worth going through the list here<\/a> and the non-free events might interest you too, if you are a film lover, so check it out.<\/p>\n

Plastic found in Honey in Switzerland<\/strong><\/p>\n

A newspaper article reported that in Switzerland plastic pieces were found in honey. The article is here<\/a>, but it is in German. At first I was quite surprised: How would plastic get into one of the cleanest and purest food and I expected that some bad company did a bad job in the production process and dirtied the honey, but that would be too simple.<\/p>\n

It turns out that the plastic pieces are tiny tiny fragments and the assessment is that they are from peeling creams and toothpaste that contains small plastic balls to achieve the cleaning effect they promise.<\/p>\n

But imagine what that means!? It means that we will in future eat LOTS of plastic because seemingly these small pieces can’t get filtered out in water treatment plants.<\/p>\n

Hmmm, great future for eating healthy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
