May has been a good month! Not necessarily weather-wise, but every weekend, high profile events took place and it continues this week as well. Africa Day and Battle for the Bay are the big ones this weekend.<\/p>\n

An even bigger event takes place for two good friends of mine. Ann McD & Karl P are getting married on Saturday and I hope you join me in wishing them a great day and a wonderful life together. Ann is actually the reason why I added the “Joerg’s Picks” section a few years ago. She was one of the very first subscribers nearly 7 years ago and she asked at some point if I could send her a summary. This summary became the “Joerg’s Picks”.<\/p>\n

Like Ann, lots of people have influenced the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) over the years and more will influence it. If you want to share your ideas with me, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com I will read all mails and will seriously consider and think about every suggestion. Where possible I reply to mails, but I get hundreds of mails every week so unfortunately I won’t get a chance to reply to every mail.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This week I definitely pick the Battle for the Bay on Saturday (or Sunday) and the Africa Day on Sunday. They are two great events and while they would definitely benefit from hot weather, even with a good umbrella, they still are great events.<\/p>\n

If you are somewhat more mature ;-), check out the Active Over 50s Show in the RDS on Sat+Sun and if you are female, be aware that the next weekend’s Woman’s Show already starts on Friday.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Flea Market on Sunday is always a great place to go to and – I say that again – if the weather is too rotten, don’t forget that you (possibly) still have to go to the Science Gallery, to see their new exhibition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Howth has a new attraction. The new Howth Express is a unique and fun way to see the historic and charming Howth and to learn about its rich local history and culture (from Norman battles to modern Fishy tales), while meandering along the coastal roads.<\/p>\n

The land train (named “O\u2019Malley”) brings you from the DART Station on Harbour Road to Howth Castle & Demesne, where you can visit the National Transport Museum (www.nationaltransportmuseum.org<\/a>). The tour then returns to the harbour, travelling down the middle pier with the fishing harbour to one side and Howth Yacht Clubs marina on the other.<\/p>\n

What better way to acquaint yourself with all that Howth has to offer, the spectacular cliff paths running from Balscadden to Sutton, the old Howth Tram Lines, Historic Howth Castle & Demesne, the golf courses, angling, sailing, not to mention the many fine restaurants and pubs.<\/p>\n

The Howth Express Tours will start and finish 300 meters from the DART station at the old Courthouse on Harbour Road, each tour will take approx. half an hour and the tours begin at 11:00 and run every 30\/40 minutes until 16:00 on 7 days a week throughout the summer (Thursdays to Sundays until the end of May).<\/p>\n

On 07 June another Trade School event will take place. “Trade School” is a concept where everyone who has something to teach can teach their preferred topic, but you won’t be paid, instead you get “barter” in return for your teaching.<\/p>\n

Multiple Sclerosis Society – South Dublin Branch<\/h2>\n

The Launch of the South Dublin Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society will take place. The Branch is built by volunteers who work unpaid to provide support and assistance to people with MS and their families. There are more than 8,000 people with MS in Ireland and over 200 of them in South Dublin.<\/p>\n

During World MS Week next week, the South Dublin Branch will launch with Coffee and Scones in the Goat Grill and Bar Kilmacud Road at 11:00 on Tues 27 May. People with MS, their families and carers are invited to join for a free cup of coffee. Tell them what you feel might be helpful for you and if transport is an issue for you, don’t let that stop you attending the launch! “Tracing the Lines” is an exhibition of drawings inspired by Dublin’s 2014 choice for One City One Book “If Ever You Go – A Map of Dublin in Poetry and Song” and consists of sketches from an architect’s journey around Dublin inspired by the sound of poetry and song from the book.<\/p>\n

The Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland will display the pen drawings by John Dorman from 26-30 May and the exhibition launch will take place on 27 May (18:00-20:00). At the launch a number of poems that are part of the exhibition will be read by their authors. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The Battle for the Bay will take place this weekend (Sat + Sun) on Dollymount Strand in Clontarf.<\/p>\n

And if you like beach, sea, fun and maybe even have an interest in Kite Surfing, Wake Boarding or SUP of just like watching them, then this is the event for you!<\/p>\n

It is a free weekend of entertainment for the whole family. There will be kitesurfers from across the world with demonstrations on the beach, free Battle for the Bay shows, paddle boarding and kite surfing introductions for newcomers. There will be live music, a Kids Zone, funfair, food village, BBQ, Volleyball competition, Coast Guard Helicopter show and more.<\/p>\n

Kite Surfing and Stand-up-Paddle-Board (SUP) competitions will take place over the weekend and former Wakeboard World Champion Nick Davies will show his skills.<\/p>\n

On Saturday the party after the event will be in the Generator Hostel in Smithfield (EUR 10) and on Sunday it will be at Gilbert and Wright\u2019s in Clontarf.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

It is a free weekend of entertainment for the whole family. There will be kitesurfers from across the world with demonstrations on the beach, free Battle for the Bay shows, paddle boarding and kite surfing introductions for newcomers. There will be live music, a Kids Zone, funfair, food village, BBQ, Volleyball competition, Coast Guard Helicopter show and more.<\/p>\n

Kite Surfing and Stand-up-Paddle-Board (SUP) competitions will take place over the weekend and former Wakeboard World Champion Nick Davies will show his skills.<\/p>\n

On Saturday the party after the event will be in the Generator Hostel in Smithfield (EUR 10) and on Sunday it will be at Gilbert and Wright\u2019s in Clontarf.<\/p>\n

On Sat+Sun 24+25 May, the Active Over 50s Show will take place in the RDS. It is a new show and it focuses on activity and hobby and pastime and is organised by the people behind the SeniorTimes Over 50\u2019s Show in response to requests from exhibitors and attendees for a more activity based show for people who are planning to, or have just retired.<\/p>\n

Attendees will be encouraged to actively participate in demonstrations\/workshops over the two days which will cover:

A free family festival to celebrate Africa Day will take place at Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park. The event will feature live music on three stages, with headliners including the internationally renowned Irish folk and world music group K\u00edla and Colours Afrobeat Foundation, and also Nigerian fusion band “Tig Lin”, Ugandan singer-songwriter Justine Nantale, ska\/pop\/punk fusion band “The Amazing Few” and Blues and R&B band “Square Pegs” The second music stage will focus on rap, hip-hop and DJs and the third stage will feature emerging artists, from dance crews and interactive performances to music ensembles and DJs.<\/p>\n

In addition to the music there will be children\u2019s entertainment, food, an African Bazaar, dance, drumming and sports.<\/p>\n

Dublin Bus will provide a free shuttle-bus service from the Heuston Bridge \/ Parkgate Street bus stop into the Phoenix Park. There will also be very limited free car-parking available at Farmleigh.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

In the 2nd millennium BC, Hammurabi became king of Mesopotamia (today: Iraq, Kuwait, parts of Syria, Turkey and Iran). The chronology of Mesopotamia in the 2nd Millennium still differ by more than 150 years. This has prevented us from understanding the relationship between climate change and the severe crisis at the end of the Hammurabi dynasty which saw the cities of southern Babylonia abandoned.<\/p>\n

This talk will explore the Venus observations which were first recognized in 1860, the Assyrian eclipse record, the dendrochronology (dating based on the analysis of patterns of tree rings) and the record of a worldwide tree growth anomaly that have contributed to finding the correct dates and help to understand this chapter in history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The lecture “Quenching the Prairie Fire: the collapse of the GAA in 1890s Ireland” by Dr Richard McElligott (Irish History Lecturer at UCD and Chairman of the Sport History Ireland Society) takes place and admission is free.<\/p>\n

“In 1884, the establishment of the Gaelic Athletic Association ushered in a sporting revolution in Ireland. The GAA initiated mass participation in organised sport among ordinary Irishmen. Within four years, it was already the largest sporting body in the country with over 41,000 members and 777 affiliated clubs. Yet, despite this remarkable initial success the 1890s would witness its almost total disintegration. In this talk, Dr McElligott will examine the economic, social and political reasons behind this and will show how, much like today, the GAA across rural Ireland suffered enormously due to the effects of economic recession and emigration. In addition, political dissension, the opposition of the Catholic Church and problems with early Gaelic Games themselves all combined to fatally undermine the national GAA.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Over 30,000 women are expected over the weekend (and it helps that every Women’s Mini Marathon participant in Dublin has to go there to collect race number etc).<\/p>\n

Over the June Bank Holiday weekend “Bloom in the Park”, the big gardening event in Phoenix Park, will take place and related, but unconnected a new gardening event has been created that will happen for the first time this year. The event is called “Bloom Fringe” and will consist of a growing number of events with currently 45 already being confirmed.<\/p>\n

Bloom Fringe is a collective of the most creative enthusiasts and professionals to showcase works from the world of gardening, sustainability, architecture, food, fashion and more.<\/span> The garden-related events will take place in pop-up venues in parks, gardens, lane-ways and Dublin City Centre as well as in permanent venues such as caf\u00e9s, shops etc.<\/p>\n

On 12 June the Soccer World championship will start in Brazil and – like Qatar – a lot of people think that it might have been the wrong choice of location for the World Cup.<\/p>\n

Yesterday I read on a German news website<\/a> that on Friday, Sao Paulo experienced the biggest traffic problem ever. On 344 km (!!) cars were in traffic jams. Wow!<\/p>\n

Sao Paulo has 11 mio inhabitants and has a street network of 17,000km, but never before were so many traffic problems recorded than on this Friday.<\/p>\n

On the same day I heard people complaining on the radio about the traffic disaster in and around Croke Park because of the One Direction concert. – I guess it is all relative!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
