This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This week I will be at the Dockland’s Summer Festival on Saturday and maybe also on Sunday. On Sunday “Family Day” in Iveagh Gardens sounds interesting.<\/p>\n

A new Science Gallery exhibition has started. It looks and good and bad sides of Fat and is very interesting. It will only run for 6 weeks, so don’t postpone it!<\/p>\n

The Dublin Writers Festival has started and comes with lots of events. Quite a few are free, so watch out for them.<\/p>\n

If you like Gospel Music, check out the (non-free) event in the National Concert Hall on Wednesday. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir (who I am involved with) is performing as a support for the amazing Blind Boys of Alabama. I will be there. :-)<\/p>\n

Howth has a new attraction. The new Howth Express is a unique and fun way to see the historic and charming Howth and to learn about its rich local history and culture (from Norman battles to modern Fishy tales), while meandering along the coastal roads.<\/p>\n

The land train (named “O\u2019Malley”) brings you from the DART Station on Harbour Road to Howth Castle & Demesne, where you can visit the National Transport Museum (www.nationaltransportmuseum.org<\/a>). The tour then returns to the harbour, travelling down the middle pier with the fishing harbour to one side and Howth Yacht Clubs marina on the other.<\/p>\n

What better way to acquaint yourself with all that Howth has to offer, the spectacular cliff paths running from Balscadden to Sutton, the old Howth Tram Lines, Historic Howth Castle & Demesne, the golf courses, angling, sailing, not to mention the many fine restaurants and pubs.<\/p>\n

The Howth Express Tours will start and finish 300 meters from the DART station at the old Courthouse on Harbour Road, each tour will take approx. half an hour and the tours begin at 11:00 and run every 30\/40 minutes until 16:00 on 7 days a week throughout the summer (Thursdays to Sundays until the end of May).<\/p>\n

Next weekend Sat+Sun 24+25 May, the Active Over 50s Show will take place in the RDS. It is a new show and it focuses on activity and hobby and pastime and is organised by the people behind the SeniorTimes Over 50\u2019s Show in response to requests from exhibitors and attendees for a more activity based show for people who are planning to, or have just retired.<\/p>\n

Attendees will be encouraged to actively participate in demonstrations\/workshops over the two days which will cover:

The Commissioning Ceremony for the new Navy ship “LE Samuel Beckett” will take place on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

The EUR 54mio ship is 90 metres long and will have a crew of 54 people. It’s duty will mainly be fisheries patrol and Search & Rescue and it was ordered in 2010. If you are interested in ships, check the details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Taoiseach and Minister for Defence, Enda Kenny, will host the naming and Commissioning Ceremonies for the L.\u00c9. Samuel Beckett. Caroline Murphy, niece of Samuel Beckett, will perform the naming ceremony and Enda Kenny will then present the Commissioning Warrant to the ship\u2019s Captain, Commander Ken Minehane.<\/p>\n

You won’t be able to get onto the ship, but you should be able to watch the ceremony from the quay.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The yearly Calcutta Run will take place on Saturday. It is a big fund raiser that has strong support in law profession circles and has collected a significant amount of money over the last few years. The run is a 5 km or 10 km run from the Law Society in Blackhall Place to Phoenix Park and back and it is not free.<\/p>\n

However, the more than 1000 runners will be cheered on by the Guinness Jazz Band and afterwards there is a big barbeque in the garden of the Law Society. Admission to the garden is free and you can buy a burger there as well if you want and listen to the DJ.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

One Family is an organisation for one-parent families in Ireland and on Sunday, One Family\u2019s Family Day Festival takes place in Iveagh Gardens. It is inspired by the UN Day of Families (15 May).<\/p>\n

There will be a packed programme of free entertainment, workshops, talks, information and more for all ages.<\/p>\n

There will be a main stage with Comedian Aidan Bishop and Magician Brian Daly, a Roma children’s choir, a Nepalese Culture Group, the Young Orchestral Pops Chamber Group and singer Sinead White. In the Talking Tent there will be talks throughout the day and workshops for Yoga and acting will be provided. Games for the whole family are also in the park.<\/p>\n

Because we all have a Mother and a Father (maybe even more than one) I never realised that Mother’s Day or Father’s Day could be seen as a negative thing and I don’t know why a Family Day in the calender is necessary, but a Family Day like the one in Iveagh Gardens is always very welcome and it is great that One Family is running it!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.<\/p>\n

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.<\/p>\n

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!<\/p>\n

“Aib\u00edtir – The Irish Alphabet in Botanical Art” by the Irish Society of Botanical Art is an exhibition from 02-25 May. Artists have created portraits of native plants accompanied by the first letter of their Irish name. Over 70 botanical artists, each with their own distinctive style, have participated in this project. This has resulted in the creation of three eighteen-letter Irish alphabets.<\/p>\n

Free demonstrations in Botanical Art will take place during the exhibitio on Saturdays, Sundays in May and on Bank Holiday Monday (05 May).<\/p>\n

The Pint of Science Festival is a science festival that is making four interesting science subjects more accessible by bringing 39 talks into pubs over three nights this week.<\/p>\n

The themes are: Mind, Human Body, Physics and Technology and the pubs are The Stag’s Head, Odessa, 4 Dame Lane & Mercantile.<\/p>\n

Great idea and really interesting talks, but there is also seriously bad news: It looks as if there are soo few places available that ALL events are booked out. Great achievement for the organisers, but they probably could fill the pubs many times over.<\/p>\n

I am mentioning the event because I think it is a super event and I want to tell you about it. but I will only list it on Monday. It wouldn’t be fair to give false hope by listing it on all three days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Rosie Hackett Bridge is the new bridge next to O’Connell Bridge and the official opening takes place on Tuesday. The exhibition “War from the Victims’ Perspective” with Photographs by Jean Mohr will be in the Gallery of Photography from 20-26 May (daily: 11:00-18:00). The exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of the First Geneva Convention and shows sixty of Swiss photographer Jean Mohr\u2019s images and addresses the issues of victims of conflicts, refugees and communities suffering from war and those still under threat.<\/p>\n

In conjunction with the exhibition the Swiss Embassy will also presents four panel discussions related to the issues that lie at the heart of the exhibition, ranging from international humanitarian law and humanitarian assistance to the ethics of war photography.<\/p>\n

A series of public Talks commemorating the 25th anniversary of the defeat of communism in Poland is taking place in the Long Room Hub. In the series 4 different guests who, back in the Communist era, were leading personalities in Polish public life will talk.<\/p>\n

The second public interview will be with independent Senator W?odzimierz Cimoszewicz. He was a post-communist Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and was associated with the reform wing of the communist party before 1989. He was a leading member of the Democratic Left Alliance and was Foreign Minister when Poland joined the European Union.<\/p>\n

War from the Victims’ Perspective – Exhibition + Discussion<\/h2>\n

The exhibition “War from the Victims’ Perspective” with Photographs by Jean Mohr will be in the Gallery of Photography from 20-26 May (daily: 11:00-18:00). The exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of the First Geneva Convention and shows sixty of Swiss photographer Jean Mohr\u2019s images and addresses the issues of victims of conflicts, refugees and communities suffering from war and those still under threat.<\/p>\n

In conjunction with the exhibition the Swiss Embassy will also presents four panel discussions related to the issues that lie at the heart of the exhibition, ranging from international humanitarian law and humanitarian assistance to the ethics of war photography.<\/p>\n

The Lost Poetry Squad will be in St. Patrick’s Park (next to St. Patrick’s Cathedral) for some late-night mayhem as part of the Dublin Writers Festival.<\/p>\n

The park is full of hidden poetry that has to be discovered before it\u2019s too late. To rescue the poems you and your teammates will have to use all the ingenuity at your disposal to find them before other poetry lovers get there, read them, and broadcast them via walkie-talkie to the poetry expert. Whichever team rescues the most poems wins.<\/p>\n

Admission is free, but booking is required and there are limited places available.<\/p>\n

The event takes place twice on Saturday 17 May (21:30 + 22:15) and twice on Friday 23 May (21:30+22:15). At the time of writing this, there were still some places available, but expect that this event will book out soon!<\/p>\n

Local and European Elections – Don’t fall for bogus candidates!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Posters everywhere, leaflet drops, door bells ring because candidates want to get you to secure their financial and employment future. Elections are interesting. And there is soooo much hot air around that even the outside temperatures have risen over the last few days. ;-)<\/p>\n

There are good and bad candidates around and I will definitely not tell you who to vote on Friday (23 May) if you are allowed to vote, but I will suggest that you do use your vote if you have it.<\/p>\n

However, please avoid voting for dubious candidates! A candidate for the European parliament will have NOTHING to do with politics in Ireland, so if any of the MEP candidates tells you he\/she will use their power – once elected – to work against water charges, please please don’t vote for that candidate because he\/she clearly hasn’t the slightest clue of what his\/her future responsibilities will be. He\/she will never ever be involved in anything hat has to with Irish water charges and any other claim is a lie. The European parliament is strongly in favour of water charges anyway and that won’t change.<\/p>\n

And if your local election candidate tells you that he will use his\/her power to achieve something that is in the realm of National Politics, then please don’t vote him\/her either. City and town councils have very very limited power and big promises just shows that he\/she is delusional.<\/p>\n

Oddly there are LOTS of delusional candidates out there. Somebody should tell them the difference between local, national and European politics, so that they get at least the basics.<\/p>\n

Ohh, and please don’t vote for any local election candidate who is not in favour of a directly elected mayor because it is time that the arrogant and ignorant city managers are shown the door and are replaced with someone who has to check with the people he represents if doing stuff makes sense.<\/p>\n

You might have heard about the traffic changes<\/a> at Customs House Quay? Exactly the same right turn ban was in place before and then was removed again. Now we are back to the same.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
