This week, the more than 190 events nearly broke my neck. Luckily not literally, but it was quite complex to piece them apart and it took me sooooo long that the mail is only with huge delay going out to you. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

This week, the Giro d’Italia events are definitely the main events, but there are soo many and the events are so varied that it is not very easy to recommend a single one. But one thing I can say: The Giro D’Italia, i.e. the cycling race, is the least important aspect about the weekend. So you can easily miss the few seconds of the cyclists arriving and just focus on all the other events.<\/p>\n

Apart from the Giro d’Italia events, you should definitely go to the People’s Art exhibition at St. Stephen’s Green. The Fusion Sunday Market is also taking place and is always great and there is the Harold’s Cross Community Festival with an impressive programme (including an Open Day at the Mount Jerome Crematorium. ;-) ).<\/p>\n

Milk & Cookies Stories on Tuesday and the European Literature Night on Thursday are some good events during the week!<\/p>\n

Giro d’Italia in Dublin – Overview<\/h2>\n

The Big Start (Grande Partenza) of the world famous Giro d\u2019Italia cycle race will take place in Northern Ireland over three days from 09-11 May. Stages 1 & 2 of this huge cycle race will take place in Northern Ireland and Stage 3 will go from Armagh to Dublin on Sunday 11 May and arrive at the Finish line at Merrion Square around 16:00-16:30 on Sunday.<\/p>\n

22 cycle teams with a total of almost 200 professional riders from over 30 countries together with their technical teams will be involved and this 97th edition of the race will cover a distance of 3,449.9 km over 21 stages between 09 May and 01 June.<\/p>\n

Six times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2014″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green. If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions. Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free. Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days.<\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. Over 70 botanical artists, each with their own distinctive style, have participated in this project. This has resulted in the creation of three eighteen-letter Irish alphabets.<\/p>\n

The Big Start (Grande Partenza) of the world famous Giro d\u2019Italia cycle race will take place in Northern Ireland over three days from 09-11 May. Stages 1 & 2 of this huge cycle race will take place in Northern Ireland and Stage 3 will go from Armagh to Dublin on Sunday 11 May and arrive at the Finish line at Merrion Square around 16:00-16:30 on Sunday.<\/p>\n

22 cycle teams with a total of almost 200 professional riders from over 30 countries together with their technical teams will be involved and this 97th edition of the race will cover a distance of 3,449.9 km over 21 stages between 09 May and 01 June.<\/p>\n

Janusz Onyszkiewicz will be the first speaker. He was a leading \u201cSolidarity\u201d figure, a spokesperson for the \u201cSolidarity\u201d movement under Communism who, after 1989, served as Minister of Defence and as a leading Polish MEP.<\/p>\n

After the Mabos Warehouse had to be vacated by the Kings of Concrete crowd, Jameson took over to run a few events in it and it is a great place for the Jameson Black Barrel Craft Series events, but unfortunately this is coming to an end now and the Warehouse won’t be much longer.<\/p>\n

In Dublin well known Irish people will read contemporary writing from eleven European countries in eleven venues, many of which are unusual and not normally easily accessible to the public. A short translated piece of contemporary writing will be read in eleven different venues in the vicinity of Nassau Street. The first reading at each venue will start at 18:30 and the last one at 21:00. Each reading takes approximately 15 minutes and is repeated on the hour and half hour, so that the audience can wander from venue to venue. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

Hand-cut chips!?!? WTF!?<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the week, a restaurant in Dublin was promoting their meal special on Twitter and one of the features that they clearly thought was outstanding was “hand-cut chips”. Are they serious?<\/p>\n

First of all let’s start with the literal meaning: I very much doubt that they are hand-cut! Instead, I am nearly 100% certain that somewhere a knife or other cutting implement was involved.<\/p>\n

But even if we let them get away with that lie, now let’s look at the worth of the quality statement “hand-cut”. Do “hand-cut” chips taste better BECAUSE they are not cut with a machine? It is VERY VERY doubtful that the mechanism that controls the cutting implement will have any influence on the taste.<\/p>\n

So what else could it be: Well, they are expected to look different. “Hand-cut” chips are expected to look chunkier than “non-hand-cut” (would they be “machine-cut”?) chips. But would it not be easy to adjust a machine in such a way that it just cuts wider and thicker chips? If such a modified machine now corrects that cosmetic difference, what remains?<\/p>\n

Well, maybe hand-cut chips are more odd-shaped. But is it really a quality parameter if the chips are even or odd-shaped? Certainly not!<\/p>\n

So what remains? NOTHING!!!!!<\/p>\n

The term “Hand-cut chips” is total nonsense and anybody using it should be banned from promoting anything for life! ;-)<\/p>\n

Yes, sure I know that the user of that nonsensical term wants to create the impression that they are more in touch with their food, that the food is made by them possibly on the premises and therefore you are meant to understand that it is fresher and of better quality. But, come on! “Hand-cut” is really not the term that we should let them get away with.<\/p>\n

By the way, the fish they were selling with it was not “hand-caught”, or “hand-killed” or “hand-de-boned” or anything like that! Odd that!<\/p>\n
