Another Bank Holiday weekend! That is certainly something to look forward to. The Dublin Event Guide is even later than in other weeks, because I had a number of significant delays in compiling it this week. I had to prioritise a few other things and that delayed me hopelessly.<\/p>\n

Bank holiday weeks usually have less events than normal weeks, but we did reach 180 events again this week, so there is enough to do for you. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

The next few weekends will be very busy, so get ready for it. There will be plenty of interesting free events and this weekend it all starts.<\/p>\n

The main events this weekend are the Bray Jazz Festival, the Phizzfest in Phibsborough and Art in Action at Farmleigh Estate. All three go for all or most of the weekend.<\/p>\n

I will definitely go to the Farmleigh Estate event. I was there in previous years and it was really good.<\/p>\n

On Sunday there is also the Pure Vintage Market in the Food Co-op and there is a Craft Festival in Dun Laoghaire.<\/p>\n

I won’t go through the events during the week here. I am late sending this newsletter this week and you have an additional day off work, so with these two things coming together, I will let you look through the list to see what is good and what you like.<\/p>\n

Every year in May, the Bealtaine Festival takes place. It was once a festival for the over 55 year olds. But has now been renamed to the festival “celebrating creativity as we age” without an age tag. Some think the removal of the age widens the appeal of the festival, others think it pushes the age up (because most 55 year olds wouldn’t see themselves as the “ageing population”.Either way, about 120,000 people will take part in Bealtaine. From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists.<\/p>\n

“McNulty and O’Reilly share a common interest in subject matter derived from rural Ireland for this exhibition of prints and video. Exploring their mutual interest in history, memory and narrative in their work, their work is situated in the local. O’Reilly’s work draws on a residency at the Heinrich Boll House on Achill Island where she was struck in particular by the Deserted Village, abandoned since famine times. John F. Deane’s poem The Abandoned Village, and an excerpt from Eavan Boland’s essay Outside History, from the book, Object Lessions, appear alongside a series of photo etchings. McNulty’s work explores personal history revising her grandmother and great grandmothers house as the basis for her large scale lithographs that become microscopic portals to the past. The exhibition is accompanied by a specially commissioned essay by Prof Luke Gibbons.”<\/p>\n

Art in Action is a unique arts and crafts festival at Farmleigh House & Estate that will take place over the May bank holiday weekend. 100 working artists will demonstrate their work and skills to you over the three day festival and they also invite you to participate in a number of art classes for both adults and children.<\/p>\n

Art in Action is running for the last 17 years and up to 30,000 visitors will come to Farmleigh House over the long weekend. In addition to the art demonstrations and classes, there will be drama, dance, music and storytelling.<\/p>\n

I have been at Art in Action last year and it is really a great event if you are interested in arts. I didn’t do any courses, but spent a great afternoon watching artists do their work, seeing some interesting painting and sculpture exhibitions and enjoying the garden party atmosphere. You will find me there this year again! :-)<\/p>\n

Admission to the event is free.<\/p>\n

For practical classes there is a fee of about EUR 8 to cover the cost of materials. Adults and children have separate classes, each under the guidance of an experienced artist. Classes last about an hour and are repeated throughout the day. Classes are booked on the day on a first-come first-served basis. In the classes you learn to make your first finished piece of art to take home.<\/p>\n

The Farmleigh Food Market will also take place over the weekend from 10:00-17:00 every day (Sat, Sun + Mon).<\/p>\n

“Aib\u00edtir – The Irish Alphabet in Botanical Art” by the Irish Society of Botanical Art is an exhibition from 02-25 May. Artists have created portraits of native plants accompanied by the first letter of their Irish name. Over 70 botanical artists, each with their own distinctive style, have participated in this project. This has resulted in the creation of three eighteen-letter Irish alphabets.<\/p>\n

Art in Action is a unique arts and crafts festival at Farmleigh House & Estate that will take place over the May bank holiday weekend. 100 working artists will demonstrate their work and skills to you over the three day festival and they also invite you to participate in a number of art classes for both adults and children.<\/p>\n

Art in Action is running for the last 17 years and up to 30,000 visitors will come to Farmleigh House over the long weekend. In addition to the art demonstrations and classes, there will be drama, dance, music and storytelling.<\/p>\n

I have been at Art in Action last year and it is really a great event if you are interested in arts. I didn’t do any courses, but spent a great afternoon watching artists do their work, seeing some interesting painting and sculpture exhibitions and enjoying the garden party atmosphere. You will find me there this year again! :-)<\/p>\n

Admission to the event is free.<\/p>\n

For practical classes there is a fee of about EUR 8 to cover the cost of materials. Adults and children have separate classes, each under the guidance of an experienced artist. Classes last about an hour and are repeated throughout the day. Classes are booked on the day on a first-come first-served basis. In the classes you learn to make your first finished piece of art to take home.<\/p>\n

The next Pure Vintage Fair will take place this week and it is what it says on the tin. A market\/flea market for vintage items, which will take place on the first Sunday of every month. “Aib\u00edtir – The Irish Alphabet in Botanical Art” by the Irish Society of Botanical Art is an exhibition from 02-25 May. Artists have created portraits of native plants accompanied by the first letter of their Irish name. Over 70 botanical artists, each with their own distinctive style, have participated in this project. This has resulted in the creation of three eighteen-letter Irish alphabets.<\/p>\n

Free demonstrations in Botanical Art will take place during the exhibitio on Saturdays, Sundays in May and on Bank Holiday Monday (05 May).<\/p>\n

Today is May Bank Holiday. Unlike in the rest of Europe, the May Bank Holiday doesn’t take place on 01 May, but instead it happens on the first Monday in May. The advantage is that it can never fall on a weekend!<\/p>\n

As far as shops are concerned, you can assume that it is like any other Sunday. Meaning that virtually all shops are open. Pay & Display Parking enforcement is suspended, which means that you don’t have to pay in a Pay&Display parking space, but bus lanes loading bays and all other rules do NOT assume it is a Sunday, instead it is a Monday.<\/p>\n

Art in Action is a unique arts and crafts festival at Farmleigh House & Estate that will take place over the May bank holiday weekend. 100 working artists will demonstrate their work and skills to you over the three day festival and they also invite you to participate in a number of art classes for both adults and children.<\/p>\n

Art in Action is running for the last 17 years and up to 30,000 visitors will come to Farmleigh House over the long weekend. In addition to the art demonstrations and classes, there will be drama, dance, music and storytelling.<\/p>\n

I have been at Art in Action last year and it is really a great event if you are interested in arts. I didn’t do any courses, but spent a great afternoon watching artists do their work, seeing some interesting painting and sculpture exhibitions and enjoying the garden party atmosphere. You will find me there this year again! :-)<\/p>\n

Admission to the event is free.<\/p>\n

For practical classes there is a fee of about EUR 8 to cover the cost of materials. Adults and children have separate classes, each under the guidance of an experienced artist. Classes last about an hour and are repeated throughout the day. Classes are booked on the day on a first-come first-served basis. In the classes you learn to make your first finished piece of art to take home.<\/p>\n

The Farmleigh Food Market will also take place over the weekend from 10:00-17:00 every day (Sat, Sun + Mon).<\/p>\n

“Back from the Dead: The Return of the Irish Eagle” is the topic of this month’s Green Drinks Dublin, organised by the Irish Wildlife Trust.<\/p>\n

After 100 years of extinction, the Golden Eagle Trust launched an ambitious reintroduction programme to bring 3 species of raptors back to Ireland. The plan was met with widespread public support, but also with poisonings, shootings, opposition and setbacks. After 15 years, have eagles finally returned to the Irish skies? And are they here to stay?<\/p>\n

Ronan Hannigan, Chairman of the Golden Eagle Trust, will discuss the reintroductions he works on and how two of the species of Eagle and the Red Kite are returning to Ireland after a long absence.<\/p>\n

“Working Lives 1893 – 1913: Introducing the Mason Photograph Collection” is a public lecture on the images from the exhibition<\/p>\n

In the National Photographic Archive in Temple Bar, guest curator Mary Jones has drawn on the Mason and Poole collections of photographs to create the exhibition “Working Lives”. The images in the exhibition show men, women and children at work between 1893 and 1913. In this lecture, Mary Jones introduces the collection and discusses many of the images in the exhibition.<\/p>\n

Patient Information Leaflet trickier than IKEA furniture<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you occasionally need medication from the pharmacy? Prescribed medication, maybe? Do you just take it or do you first study the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with it?<\/p>\n

I ALWAYS read that leaflet first. I want to know that the tablets that I got to get rid of a heavy infection with headache and lots of other pains have as sideeffects EXACTLY the headache and lots of other pains listed as the original illness PLUS death (In rare cases! Phew!) and anything in between. But I will look at this another time.<\/p>\n

Today, I Just want to focus on the Patient Information Leaflet.<\/p>\n

Did you open it (easy!) and after reading did you want to put it back in the box only to realise that it only fits if you have it folded exactly the way it came, BUT that you have NO idea how they managed to fold it like that in the first place and that you will NEVER be able to put it back in the same way as it came?<\/p>\n

What is it about Patient Information Leaflet folding systems? Having that leaflet in your hand and trying to fold it is like trying to put the most complicated piece of IKEA furniture together WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS! Impossible!!!!<\/p>\n
