This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

There are a good few interesting events taking place this week,<\/p>\n

It starts with the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival in Howth. A great festival if the weather is nice and when you combine it with a walk in Howth. Unfortunately rain does have an impact: There is not that much to do if you need to look for cover. If you like Fireworks, there is one tonight, BUT double check the website or Facebook Page if the weather is dubious.<\/p>\n

An Orchid Fair is taking place in the Botanic Gardens and a Summer Market will be in the Filmbase in Temple Bar.<\/p>\n

The Swords Viking Festival might be for you if you have to entertain children. I don’t expect it to be as big as the really well organised Battle of Clontarf Festival last week, but that’s ok!<\/p>\n

The Science Gallery exhibition “Fail Better” will close on Sunday, so if you still haven’t seen it, now is your very last chance before it closes forever.<\/p>\n

The Soapbox Science Talks in TCD sound interesting and if I had the time, I would definitely go there.<\/p>\n

That was all just Saturday!!! On Sunday there is a Guided Cycle from 09:30. The Orchid Fair takes place again and in Santry PhotoFest2014 should interest any serious photo enthusiast. Dublin Bay Prawn Festival and Viking Festival in Swords also continue for another day.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Flea Market is always a nice event (especially if you are looking for indoors events due to weather) and the International Dance Day with lots of free classes is a must-go for all dance-fans.<\/p>\n

This covers just two days and already there is such a long list of events!! This summer will get busy!!<\/p>\n

Temple Bar in world\u2019s 10 most disappointing locations list<\/h2>\n

The Irish Times and other media outlets reported<\/a> it about 10 days ago: Temple Bar is – according to the Huffington Post – among the Top 10 of locations to avoid “at all cost”. Most of us fully understand the problem that is Temple Bar and many of us have a Love – Hate relationship with the area. I actually think that there are – just looking at a weekend day – at least five or six Temple Bars:<\/p>\n

The first one is a wonderful family-friendly “Old Town” piece of Dublin until around 17:00. Then from 17:00-20:00 the hen weekenders, restaurant seekers and pub visitors are flooding the street. Busy and you experience a change in atmosphere. Then the 20:00-00:00 slot is the third phase, it is an increasingly messy time with the first few bits of hostility, shouting and drunkenness. Now it flips into the “Get out” phase from around 00:00-2:30 and after that it is just a war zone. Pubs are closed, security people left and the Gardai have abandoned the area.<\/p>\n

It is not convenient to the pubs and bars in the area if anything negative is mentioned about it, but I think something should be done if we don’t want to let Temple Bar sink further.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Founded in 1854 by an Act of Parliament, the National Gallery of Ireland\u2019s first Board was established with seventeen governors and guardians. This governance included the President of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), which was considered the most important arts organisation in Ireland, and two artists nominated by the RHA, George Petrie and George Francis Mulvany. Since then, over fifty artists have served on the Board, contributing to, and supervising, the development of the institution and its collection.<\/p>\n

Many of the artists nominated to the Board were active members of the Irish art community, sometimes holding positions of great influence. For example, Sean Keating was a senior teacher at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, President of the RHA and served on the Board of the Gallery for twenty-eight years.<\/p>\n

“Governors, Guardians, Artists” highlights the work of a selection of those artists who served on the board, such as George Petrie, John Lavery, Nathaniel Hone, Sarah Purser, Jack B.Yeats, Evie Hone and Sean Keating.<\/p>\n

O’Reilly’s work draws on a residency at the Heinrich Boll House on Achill Island where she was struck in particular by the Deserted Village, abandoned since famine times. John F. Deane’s poem The Abandoned Village, and an excerpt from Eavan Boland’s essay Outside History, from the book, Object Lessions, appear alongside a series of photo etchings. McNulty’s work explores personal history revising her grandmother and great grandmothers house as the basis for her large scale lithographs that become microscopic portals to the past. The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival takes place in Howth this Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n

There will be a focus on seafood with Cookery Demonstrations in the Marquee on both days and with special prawn festival dishes in the restaurants in Howth.<\/p>\n

There will be a few free events and activities (History of Howth Walk, Open Days at the RNLI Lifeboat Station and at the Howth Coastguard Station, Biodiversity Activities and the Howth Goats are on display), and for other activities there will be charges (visit the National Transport Museum, the Hurdy Gurdy Radio Museum, enjoy the Fun Fair).<\/p>\n

At the Festival Food Fair in the Main Festival Marquee you will be able to buy a variety of Prawn (and other) dishes and then you could go for a walk on Howth Pier or even around Howth Head to make room for more food.<\/p>\n

On Saturday evening at 22:00 a Fireworks Display over Howth Harbour will entertain everybody.<\/p>\n

Access roads to and from Howth and parking in Howth are very limited and with a festival taking place there, it will get very very busy, especially if the weather is good. If you can, you should use public transport!! …or be prepared for significant delays.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Battle of Clontarf took place in the Clontarf area and never reached to Swords, but when it was all over and Brian Boru had been killed, he was brought to Swords Monastery, which was were now St. Columba’s Church is situated. And with that link in place, Swords also wants to have a Viking Festival.<\/p>\n

The Festival takes place from Fri 25-Sun 27 April. I found out about the festival too late to tell you already in last week’s Dublin Event Guide about the Friday events, but I did mention them on the Facebook Page, so it is always a good idea to watch out for updates on http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DublinEventGuide<\/a><\/p>\n

On Saturday and Sunday a Viking Village will Battle Re-enactments, Hands-on activities and information about Archaeology, a Falconry Display and a talk will wait for you from 11:00-17:00 at the castle in Swords. There is also a Viking exhibition in the Chapel of the Castle. And on Saturday a “Swords 1014” poetry competition reading and prize giving will take place in the County Hall in Swords at 15:30. Hourly tours of St. Columba’s Church and Round Tower (from 12:00-16:00) will also take place.<\/p>\n

All events are free. There will also be free parking on the Seatown Road Car Park.<\/p>\n

The current Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

This weekend 100 years ago, the gunrunning into Larne, Bangor and Donaghadee by the Ulster Volunteer Force took place, which was followed by the Howth gun-running in July 1914. The rifles and ammunition smuggled into Howth on board the yacht Asgard and into Kilcoole by Kelpie and Chotah would arm the Irish Volunteers in preparation for the 1916 Rising.<\/p>\n

Sandra Heise, curator of Historical Collections, will give an illustrated talk, describing these events in Irish history and their consequences.<\/p>\n

Cumann na mBan, an Irish republican women’s paramilitary organisation, was founded 100 years ago in Wynn\u2019s Hotel, Abbey Street, on 02 April 1914. At that meeting, attended by approximately 100 women, it signed up to advance the cause of Irish liberty, to organise Irish women in the furtherance of that objective, to assist in arming and equipping a body of Irish men for the defence of Ireland and to form a fund for these purposes to be called the \u2018Defence of Ireland Fund\u2019.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mary McAuliffe, who is a lecturer in Irish Women\u2019s History at UCD and is President of the Irish Women\u2019s History Association, will discuss the founding of Cumann na mBan, explore the role women played in the nationalist movement, the debates that emerged regarding that role, and the nature of its relationship with the wider women\u2019s suffrage movement.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival takes place in Howth this Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n

There will be a focus on seafood with Cookery Demonstrations in the Marquee on both days and with special prawn festival dishes in the restaurants in Howth.<\/p>\n

There will be a few free events and activities (History of Howth Walk, Open Days at the RNLI Lifeboat Station and at the Howth Coastguard Station, Biodiversity Activities and the Howth Goats are on display), and for other activities there will be charges (visit the National Transport Museum, the Hurdy Gurdy Radio Museum, enjoy the Fun Fair).<\/p>\n

At the Festival Food Fair in the Main Festival Marquee you will be able to buy a variety of Prawn (and other) dishes and then you could go for a walk on Howth Pier or even around Howth Head to make room for more food.<\/p>\n

Access roads to and from Howth and parking in Howth are very limited and with a festival taking place there, it will get very very busy, especially if the weather is good. If you can, you should use public transport!! …or be prepared for significant delays.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Battle of Clontarf took place in the Clontarf area and never reached to Swords, but when it was all over and Brian Boru had been killed, he was brought to Swords Monastery, which was were now St. Columba’s Church is situated. And with that link in place, Swords also wants to have a Viking Festival.<\/p>\n

The Festival takes place from Fri 25-Sun 27 April. I found out about the festival too late to tell you already in last week’s Dublin Event Guide about the Friday events, but I did mention them on the Facebook Page, so it is always a good idea to watch out for updates on http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DublinEventGuide<\/a><\/p>\n

On Saturday and Sunday a Viking Village will Battle Re-enactments, Hands-on activities and information about Archaeology, a Falconry Display and a talk will wait for you from 11:00-17:00 at the castle in Swords. There is also a Viking exhibition in the Chapel of the Castle. And on Saturday a “Swords 1014” poetry competition reading and prize giving will take place in the County Hall in Swords at 15:30. Hourly tours of St. Columba’s Church and Round Tower (from 12:00-16:00) will also take place.<\/p>\n

All events are free. There will also be free parking on the Seatown Road Car Park.<\/p>\n

The current Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

The whole area from Customs House Quay to the Point (on the North Side) and from City Quay to the Grand Canal Dock (on the South Side) will be affected by rolling or full road closures.<\/p>\n

The National Print Museum hosts an exhibition (25 March-27 May) of Irish political ephemera (things that exist or are used or enjoyed for only a short time)<\/span> covering general and local elections, referendums European and presidential elections from the 1970s to the early 2010s. The exhibition includes ballot papers, election leaflets, posters, and pamphlets.<\/p>\n

The Office of Public Works in association with Phizzfest, present “Joyceborough – Dermot Bolger in conversation with Barry McGovern” in Farmleigh House on Wed 21 May at 20:00.<\/p>\n

Dermot Bolger and Barry McGovern have close links with the works of James Joyce, with Farmleigh and with Phibsborough.<\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

12+13+19+21+27+27 April<\/h3>\n

There will be 6 (!!) guided walks in the Dublin Mountains in April. The walks are organised by the Dublin Mountain partnership and are all of varying difficulty. There are a number of training hikes, a 8.5 hour walk for the serious hikers, an easy hike for beginners and also a “public transport” hike with a circular route starting and ending near a DART station.<\/p>\n

Mobile Phones in Cars! – New BIG fines, but do they makes sense?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

New BIG fines (1000 Euro and a court appearance) will come into effect on 01 May for people using the mobile phone while driving. But do they make sense?<\/p>\n

If someone writes a text message while driving or fiddles with the phone or even holds the phone to the ear, they are so distracted by looking at the display and through one hand being completely occupied, that safe driving is nearly impossible. If you see an erratically driving car in front of you in 8 out of 10 cases the driver is on the phone holding the phone to the ear. In ALL those cases big penalties do make sense.<\/p>\n

However, there should also be big penalties for reading a newspaper while driving, doing your make-up (!!!) while driving, eating your breakfast or lunch while driving. Oddly however, there are no specific rules for all these things. They are kind of covered under “driving with due care”, but it was felt that no special laws had to be put in place.<\/p>\n

But back to the phones: A lot of people claim that a phone conversation is distracting and shouldn’t be allowed, but is it really that much different from talking to a passenger in the car?<\/p>\n

The new laws make it quite complicated to understand what is allowed and what isn’t. It is absolutely forbidden to send or read a text message. But what about accepting a call and talking? If the phone is in a car kit or other holder and all you have to do is touch one button, are you allowed to do that? There are indications that you are NOT allowed.<\/p>\n

So, if touching one button on your phone is soooooo distracting. Should we then stop people from changing the radio station? What about touching the switch of switching the lights on? Or pushing the lever for indicating? If touching a phone button is putting you in danger, then I guarantee you that using that indicator is at least as dangerous! (Taxi drivers seem to know that! They don’t use indicators! ;-) )<\/p>\n

So, where does that leave us? Well, the laws seem to be overdone once again OR just not considering reality. And in the end, all the laws are useless without their enforcement! This weekend the Gardai might be out in force to stop people from using mobile phones, but in a few weeks time it is back to old.<\/p>\n
