I can confirm that I am fully repaired and will promise to stay away from tuna – at least near the night when I write this Event Guide. ;-)
2) The second big THANK YOU goes to all the people (and there were many!) that offered help in getting tickets for the “The Spheres” event on Grand Canal Square. It seems that people who registered very early for this event never got their activation code, but in the end the tickets weren’t even checked at the venue. Well, crowd control can be “issuing and checking tickets” OR “issuing and _threatening_ to check tickets”.
I did see the performance and thought it was nice and definitely different. ;-)

I hope you all had a nice St. Patrick’s Day Weekend! I had a brilliant time at the Big Day Out and even at the quite good St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The weather was great and the atmosphere in town was busy but good – until around 18:30 when every year the atmosphere turns and gets increasingly dodgy. For me that is the time to leave the City Centre to the drunks (many of them under-age!!) and to retreat.

It was a really good weekend! But, hey, I am lucky! I have another long weekend ahead of me. This morning I will – if the annoying taxi driver protest won’t interfere – fly to Germany for a few days to be there for the baptism of my little nephew and god-son. Keep your fingers crossed that I make it in time to the airport and don’t be surprised if I won’t reply to any mails until Monday night.

By the way, my mail backlog is still huge. I am trying to reply to as many mails as possible every week, but I can’t keep up. Nevertheless, send me your mails, I read every single one of them!

[ad]

—–
And please read this: This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E, Cliodhna D, Brian L, Padraig S, Kathie S, Orla niF, Jef B, Susanna N, Kate C, Nicola J, Claus Sch, Gordon S, Jeanne M, Fiona O’C, Marta M, Angela C, Isabelle F, Saundra S, Meisoon N, Ruth F, Valerie McN, Estelle O, Aoife M, Mairin M, Fionán O’L, Maeve L, Blaithin O’D, Ciara D, Mike G, Andrej G, Deirdre R, Vanessa O’L, Chris McK, Frank B, www.stickyfingerstravel.com (The travel guide for parents travelling with their children.), www.target2020.com (…a training company that focuses on personal and career development.), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, located at 6 Merrion Square, which supports contemporary Irish artists.) and www.a1computers.ie in Dun Laoghaire/Cabinteely (…who repair computers, printers and sort out Internet problems fast and who sell computers, laptops and low priced printer cartridges). Going to free events saves you a LOT of money. True? ;-) Knowing about these free events is essential, so that you then can decide if you want to go or not. True? This is at least worth 1 Euro per month, which is just 25 cent per newsletter!? Do you agree? Can I count on your 12 Euro per year? This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

–Advertisement————————————
GOSPEL PROJECT IN CONCERT!!
Sat March 21st – The Gospel Project in concert @ The Cobblestone, Smithfield. I mentioned that I will try to go to The Gospel Project Concert on Sat as advertised above, but this concert was not last week, instead it it taking place THIS week The reason why I got confused is because Cathy who is in charge of The Gospel Project is as well the musical director of the Ballymun Gospel Choir who did have a concert last Saturday. I hope I didn’t confuse anybody. The Gospel Project Concert is THIS Saturday and I hope many of you will go!

Unfortunately I can’t and I won’t be able to go to any other events this weekend either, because I will be away. Nevertheless, here is what I would do if I were in Dublin this weekend:

On Friday the Beats International event in Bia Bar looks interesting. Saturday and Sunday are a bit of an anti-climax after all the events of last weekend, but I guess it is a good thing that you can take it easy after such a busy weekend. Go to St. Stephen’s Green for no good reason. ;-) Or go for a walk in Phoenix Park, especially if you haven’t done it for a while or maybe have never done it before! On Monday the DIT and UCD events look very interesting during the day. Between Tuesday and Sunday I will try to go to the Science Gallery event and on Thursday I will try to go to the Connector Meeting (but since Thursday is for me “Event Guide Night”) I am not sure yet if I will succeed.

______________________________
______Competition______________

FUNKY SEOMRA – TICKET COMPETITION
The three pairs of tickets for “Funky Seomra”, the club/disco event where you can dance to funky world music in an alcohol-free and drug-free atmosphere, were won by Suzanne Barror, Caroline McGrath and Laura Byrne. Congrats to all of you, I hope you had a great night! The next Funky Seomra will take place on 18 April in the RDS. Put that date in your calender!
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=34897260145 and here http://www.dancefree.ie/

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. Thanks!

______________________________
______Dublin News______________

I was quite busy during the week and forgot to “gather” news, but here are a few little bits:

KEVIN DOYLE ALBUM OUT
In time for Mother’s Day and just 3 weeks before the concert in the Olympia Kevin Doyle’s Album “Hollywood & Broadway” has been released. Many of you know that I have a personal and direct interest in this because I sing in Kevin’s backing choir and will be on stage with him and more than 20 other performers in the Olympia on Sat 04 April. Kevin is widely known as Ireland’s best Elvis Presley performer and has filled the Olympia, the National Concert Hall and the Tivoli Theatre many times with The Elvis Presley Story and even the Point Theatre saw a hugely successful event a few years ago. Not turning his back on Elvis concerts, but diversifying slightly, Kevin has recorded an album with well known and popular Hollywood & Broadway songs and will perform these songs in the Olympia Theatre.
The album is available in all good record stores, which in Dublin is mainly HMV and Tower Records due to the financial troubles of Golden Disc and tickets for the concert in April are available here: http://www.ticketmaster.ie/Doyle-Sings-Hollywood-Broadway-tickets/artist/978937 Kevin’s website is here http://www.doylemusic.net/ Oh, and if you listen carefully you can hear the great singing of our backing choir on the album, we recorded three songs with Kevin and can be heard quite well. ;-)

AYA RESTAURANT RE-OPENING??
Yes, it might happen! It seems that the Aya restaurant behind Brown+Thomas has been taken over by Yo! Sushi and might open again soon as a Sushi restaurant. That wouldn’t be a bad thing. Ok, if you look behind the façade you might wonder if Yo! Sushi is a “worthy” successor to Aya, because Yo! Sushi is owned by the same company that is behind Abrakebabra and the Bagel Factory, so the Asian or Japanese heritage is well hidden. ;-) However another way of looking at it would be this: Maybe an Abrakebabra owned Sushi bar has the stamina that the Aya owners didn’t have! And if you dig a little deeper you will find out that Yo! Sushi is just a Franchise from the UK company, which was secured for Ireland by the owners of Abrakebabra. So there is NO Asian or Japanese background ANYWHERE in the whole company. http://www.yosushi.com

TAXI DRIVER PROTEST TODAY
The “friendly” taxi drivers of Ireland will protest again today http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/eyaumhmhgbsn/rss2/ and couldn’t be more thrilled if they created an absolute traffic chaos in Dublin. I am not sure if it is just me who has difficulties understanding their reasons for the protest. I do understand that they are saying that there are too many taxis on the street and that a regulator should limit the numbers to ensure that they all earn enough. Does that mean we will have to regulate Spar/Londis/Centra shops? There is definitely too many of them! Will all Spar/Londis/Centra shop owners soon protest and try to cause chaos?

———Opportunities—————–

A few weeks ago I suggested/invited everybody on the distribution list who has recently started a company – out of need or because they saw this great opportunity -, to send me some information about their venture and I promised to let everybody in the Dublin Event Guide Community know. I got a good few replies and am still open to receive more. Initially I had planned to list all of these business ideas here together, but to keep the size of the newsletter a little under control, I will now distribute them over a few weeks.

If I haven’t featured your idea yet and you had contacted me before, please get back to me. I have a few more waiting, but need some more information from the remaining “Opportunities”.

______________________________
______Exhibitions_______________

ANTHONY HAUGHEY – GALLERY OF PHOTOGRAPHY
“Prospect” and “Progress II” are video works by Anthony Haughey – in collaboration with Susanne Bosch – which will be screened over the coming weekends in the Gallery of Photography in Meeting House Square in Temple Bar. Using the calculation that I already mentioned in last week’s Event Guide, this means that over the 2.5km of the parade route, there were 270 people per metre!!! With two sides of the street and a max of 3 people per metre, this means that on each side of the parade route the crowd must have been 45 people deep. And 45 people is a minimum of 15 metres, which is probably approx. 3 lanes of a street. So, with about 1.5 lanes for the parade, and 3 lanes on each side of the parade route for the people, Dame Street must be 7.5 lanes wide!!! Yeah, right!!!!
Yes, I understand that organisers always want to overestimate the numbers, but where do these blatant lies come from?
And since the next year always has to be better and bigger than the previous year, the over-exaggerations are getting worse and worse every year.
http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0317/stpatricksday.html
The big question is then: How to do it? Well, you can either use the formal and scientific method using Minkowski fractal dimensions ;-) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minkowski_dimension) or do it the “presidential way” by balloon http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/daily/local/108026.php OR – and I think that is the best approach – you better stop completely giving figures with the same good reasons as the organisers of the iFest in Heuston http://www.ifesthouston.com/2008/03/14/why-we-dont-estimate-crowds/

—————–
I am lucky this week and will have another long weekend.
