Hi all!<\/p>\n

Have a great Easter weekend!! The weather on Saturday and Sunday will be great and when it gets worse on Monday, we can at least look back to a full week without rain. Nice!<\/p>\n

Enjoy the events that are taking place. Considering that bank holiday weekends are not the biggest event weekends, the 170 events this week are a surprisingly large number.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

This week, it is quite easy to choose because this weekend there are only 2 or 3 main events. One of them is really big and the second one is sizeable too. The big one is the Clontarf Viking Festival in St. Anne’s Park. Sounds like a great event and I am definitely going there on Sunday. It is taking place on Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n

The second event is the Famleigh House Easter Programme. the OPW who are in charge of Farmleigh always do a great job running events that are perfectly talored for children but also give the parents something to do. The Easter events in Farmleigh House take place on Sunday and Monday.<\/p>\n

And as a warm up, there will be the Record Store Day. Not THAT big, but still a great amount of live music is created because of it. :-)<\/p>\n

There are more events during the week and you should browse through the list, but remember, don’t read every event, there are too many (more than 165!) Just read the headline and if the headline interests you, THEN read the other information about the event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“The Story of Swing” performed by the Swing Cats<\/h2>\n

The Swing Cats were assembled in 2010 as a “Jumpin Swing Band” to move away from the Rat Pack crooning swing style and into the high-energy non-stop-dancing vibe as known from ball rooms in the USA in the 1930s and 40s. The Swing Cats developed a free style way of playing Swing with unpredictable arrangements to keep the music flowing for the high-energy swing dancers.<\/p>\n

The band is a 6 piece with piano, drums, double bass, a two piece brass section, and a lead vocalist and they play a two hour non-stop set with minimal gaps between songs to keep the dance floor moving.<\/p>\n

In addition to many songs from the 30s and 40s swing era, The Swing Cats are also performing modern songs from the 80s to today in the swing style from the 30s and 40s.<\/p>\n

On Sat 19 April, The Swing Cats, together with Special Guest Ken Kirwan, would like to tell you the “Story of Swing” in the Button Factory. Tickets are EUR 19.50 (plus fees) and are available on ticketmaster.ie<\/p>\n

The Carmichael Centre for Voluntary Groups invites to “Dublin’s Good Friday Concert” on Friday 18 April in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The Goethe-Institut Choir and the Dublin Symphony Orchestra will be performing the Faure Requiem with works by Bach and Schubert. Governors, Guardians, Artists – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Founded in 1854 by an Act of Parliament, the National Gallery of Ireland\u2019s first Board was established with seventeen governors and guardians. This governance included the President of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), which was considered the most important arts organisation in Ireland, and two artists nominated by the RHA, George Petrie and George Francis Mulvany. Since then, over fifty artists have served on the Board, contributing to, and supervising, the development of the institution and its collection.<\/p>\n

Many of the artists nominated to the Board were active members of the Irish art community, sometimes holding positions of great influence. For example, Sean Keating was a senior teacher at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, President of the RHA and served on the Board of the Gallery for twenty-eight years.<\/p>\n

“Governors, Guardians, Artists” highlights the work of a selection of those artists who served on the board, such as George Petrie, John Lavery, Nathaniel Hone, Sarah Purser, Jack B.Yeats, Evie Hone and Sean Keating.<\/p>\n

O’Reilly’s work draws on a residency at the Heinrich Boll House on Achill Island where she was struck in particular by the Deserted Village, abandoned since famine times. John F. Deane’s poem The Abandoned Village, and an excerpt from Eavan Boland’s essay Outside History, from the book, Object Lessions, appear alongside a series of photo etchings. McNulty’s work explores personal history revising her grandmother and great grandmothers house as the basis for her large scale lithographs that become microscopic portals to the past. The Clontarf Viking Festival takes place this weekend on Saturday and Sunday and it is looking really interesting.<\/p>\n

Visit the big Viking village and the largest living history battle re-enactment ever produced in Ireland. The Viking village will contain static and interactive displays of Viking life and include demonstrations of Viking Skills and Crafts such as weapons displays, storytelling, Blacksmith, Leather working, Pole Lathe, Coin Striking, Silversmith, Hnefatafl ( Viking Chess), Archery Display and Viking Long Boat, Falconry Displays & Mounted Viking Displays.<\/p>\n

Sword and Archery Sessions for all ages take place where you can take part yourself. There will also be a children’s zone with lots of activities for the younger visitor, including Viking themed children\u2019s art and crafts, storytelling and more.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the event each day will be the two 30-45 minute large-scale re-enactments of the battle of Clontarf with authentically armed and clad Viking warriors including some on horseback. It takes place at 13:00 and 16:00 on Sat+Sun<\/p>\n

There will also be a music stage featuring the a children’s choir, some trad music and then on Saturday the Booka Brass Band and the hugely popular North Strand Kontra Band. On Sunday The Little Big Band, the Dublin Blue Grass Collective and Caitlin & Ciaran will perform.<\/p>\n

There will also be a Food Village, a Model Boat Show, a Falconry Display, a Picnic Area, an Arts & Crafts Village and a Fun Fair.<\/p>\n

Admission is free. I predict that the event will be very busy, so parking will be difficult, DARTS are not operating on Sunday, but can bring you to Killester DART Station on Saturday. And on Sunday additionally a Festival shuttle bus will leave every 15 minutes on the 31 route from Eden Quay (between 10:00-14:00) and from Abbey Street after 14:00. The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

The Clontarf Viking Festival takes place this weekend on Saturday and Sunday and it is looking really interesting.<\/p>\n

Visit the big Viking village and the largest living history battle re-enactment ever produced in Ireland. The Viking village will contain static and interactive displays of Viking life and include demonstrations of Viking Skills and Crafts such as weapons displays, storytelling, Blacksmith, Leather working, Pole Lathe, Coin Striking, Silversmith, Hnefatafl ( Viking Chess), Archery Display and Viking Long Boat, Falconry Displays & Mounted Viking Displays.<\/p>\n

Sword and Archery Sessions for all ages take place where you can take part yourself. There will also be a children’s zone with lots of activities for the younger visitor, including Viking themed children\u2019s art and crafts, storytelling and more.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the event each day will be the two 30-45 minute large-scale re-enactments of the battle of Clontarf with authentically armed and clad Viking warriors including some on horseback. It takes place at 13:00 and 16:00 on Sat+Sun<\/p>\n

There will also be a music stage featuring the a children’s choir, some trad music and then on Saturday the Booka Brass Band and the hugely popular North Strand Kontra Band. On Sunday The Little Big Band, the Dublin Blue Grass Collective and Caitlin & Ciaran will perform.<\/p>\n

There will also be a Food Village, a Model Boat Show, a Falconry Display, a Picnic Area, an Arts & Crafts Village and a Fun Fair.<\/p>\n

Admission is free. I predict that the event will be very busy, so parking will be difficult, DARTS are not operating on Sunday, but can bring you to Killester DART Station on Saturday. Dublin Bus can bring you from Lower Abbey Street to Mount Prospect Avenue on routes 29a, 31a, 31b, 32 and 130 on Saturday and on Sunday. And on Sunday additionally a Festival shuttle bus will leave every 15 minutes on the 31 route from Eden Quay (between 10:00-14:00) and from Abbey Street after 14:00. The 1916 Easter Rising Commemoration is celebrated at Easter Sunday every year. It doesn’t make sense really, because we all know that Easter is literally a moving feast. The actual Easter Rising in 1916 took place on Easter Monday, which was 24 April 1916. So this year we are quite close to the actual date. Considering how significant the event is in Irish history, you would think the right thing would be to celebrate it on the correct date, no? Imagine you were born at Easter, would you then celebrate your birthday at Easter every year or rather on the correct date?<\/p>\n

No matter what you think, this year the commemoration will take place on Easter Sunday again. It is an odd celebration all the important people are involved: The president, the Taoiseach and the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence but apart from the reading of the Proclamation of independence, it is mainly a military parade<\/a>, that seems totally out of date.<\/p>\n

Let’s hope that the 100th anniversary in 2016 (on the random date of 27 March) will be more appropriate to the historical significance of the date.<\/p>\n

If you want to attend the spectacle this year, you have to be in position (near the GPO) by 11:15 and then wait until 12:00. Video screens on either side of the GPO will show what is happening.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Music Tales is an event in the Dublin: One City, One Book series of events. In association with the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM), the Contemporary Music Centre presents this concert programme in Dublin City libraries on 22 and 23 April 2014.<\/p>\n

Edmund Burke (1729-1797) graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1748. He entered the Parliament in 1765 and became a champion for political emancipation. The Edmund Burke lectures provide a forum to contribute to the discussion about what society we want to live in and what traditions, perspectives and values we need to draw on in the shaping of our future.<\/p>\n

This year the Instituto Cervantes celebrates author Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra with a performance of three of his interludes by UCD students.<\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

There will be 6 (!!) guided walks in the Dublin Mountains in April. The walks are organised by the Dublin Mountain partnership and are all of varying difficulty. There are a number of training hikes, a 8.5 hour walk for the serious hikers, an easy hike for beginners and also a “public transport” hike with a circular route starting and ending near a DART station.<\/p>\n

Irish Men ugliest in the world?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let me start by saying that I am no expert in that area and therefore probably will write nonsense, but that shouldn’t stop me, right!? :-) But seriously, I am really no expert on male beauty an since I am not Irish either this issue has not much to do with me. But I still find it puzzling that year after year the website beautifulpeople.com declares that Irish men are at the bottom of the list.<\/p>\n

Can it be that men of one nationality have a significantly higher proportion of “ugliness” than anyone else? Well, if you look a little further into the details, it seems that there are a number of nations at the bottom of the list. At least last year’s statistics mentioned that men from the UK and from Poland also were at the bottom of the beauty scale.<\/p>\n

And what is that site anyway? Well it is a dating site for beautiful people. So only if you are “beautiful” you will et accepted. So the stats are not taken from random samples but only among the people that have declared themselves beautiful. That is quite relevant. Because now it looks like this: Ireland (and possibly UK and Poland) has the highest proportion of men who overestimate their level of beauty. That’s a COMPLETELY different story.<\/p>\n

And if you are male and Irish, feel free to interpret it this way: Ireland has the highest proportion of confident men, who are happy in their own skin no matter how others judge their looks. ;-)<\/p>\n

Some might think the last sentence is pushing it a little, but without a doubt the men signed up on that website will agree with me. :-P<\/p>\n
