This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This week, I will focus on just two days, because it is two busy days. More than 170 free events are taking place this week and quite a number of high-profile events are happening on Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the Dodder Action Day and the Anarchist Bookfair and a Giro d’Italia “Dublin Bikes go pink” promo event should be considered by you.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the great Fusion Sunday Market and a Print Museum Family Day will be on my Pick List. And then there is also the must-experience-at-least-once event in Temple Bar when H\u00e4ndel’s Messiah will be performed on Fishamble Street. And out at Farmleigh House a Japan Day takes place.<\/p>\n

“The Story of Swing” performed by the Swing Cats<\/h2>\n

The Swing Cats were assembled in 2010 as a “Jumpin Swing Band” to move away from the Rat Pack crooning swing style and into the high-energy non-stop-dancing vibe as known from ball rooms in the USA in the 1930s and 40s. The Swing Cats developed a free style way of playing Swing with unpredictable arrangements to keep the music flowing for the high-energy swing dancers.<\/p>\n

The band is a 6 piece with piano, drums, double bass, a two piece brass section, and a lead vocalist and they play a two hour non-stop set with minimal gaps between songs to keep the dance floor moving.<\/p>\n

In addition to many songs from the 30s and 40s swing era, The Swing Cats are also performing modern songs from the 80s to today in the swing style from the 30s and 40s.<\/p>\n

On Sat 19 April, The Swing Cats, together with Special Guest Ken Kirwan, would like to tell you the “Story of Swing” in the Button Factory. Tickets are EUR 19.50 (plus fees) and are available on ticketmaster.ie<\/p>\n

The Carmichael Centre for Voluntary Groups invites to “Dublin’s Good Friday Concert” on Friday 18 April in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The Goethe-Institut Choir and the Dublin Symphony Orchestra will be performing the Faure Requiem with works by Bach and Schubert. This is a special treat for everyone who likes classical and ecclesiastical music.<\/p>\n

Governors, Guardians, Artists – Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Founded in 1854 by an Act of Parliament, the National Gallery of Ireland\u2019s first Board was established with seventeen governors and guardians. This governance included the President of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), which was considered the most important arts organisation in Ireland, and two artists nominated by the RHA, George Petrie and George Francis Mulvany. Since then, over fifty artists have served on the Board, contributing to, and supervising, the development of the institution and its collection.<\/p>\n

Many of the artists nominated to the Board were active members of the Irish art community, sometimes holding positions of great influence. For example, Sean Keating was a senior teacher at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, President of the RHA and served on the Board of the Gallery for twenty-eight years.<\/p>\n

“Governors, Guardians, Artists” highlights the work of a selection of those artists who served on the board, such as George Petrie, John Lavery, Nathaniel Hone, Sarah Purser, Jack B.Yeats, Evie Hone and Sean Keating.<\/p>\n

Artist, Mary O\u2019 Brien will give a lecture on \u2018The Representation of Women in 20th Century Irish Art\u2019 on Friday at 4pm and the demonstrations will take place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 11am and 3pm each day. This will be a great opportunity to meet artists and learn about the various art forms, mediums and techniques they use, such as palette knife painting, drawing, charcoal work, cloud painting, felt making and flower arranging.<\/p>\n

IFI Spotlight is a yearly event that will feature this time new Irish features and a day-long seminar chaired by Margaret Kelleher (Chair of Anglo-Irish Literature at UCD and IFI Chair), which will focus on film and television production made in or about Ireland during 2013.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

“Veil” is an Easter Play By Sean Walsh (directed by Breffni McGuinness) and it will be performed by the Clontarf Players to celebrate the Battle of Clontarf.<\/p>\n

At a high level the play represents the ultimate battle: the battle between good and evil. It brings to mind that “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men should do nothing.”<\/p>\n

The play is attempting to create a bridge between the Battle of Clontarf, the Easter story and the story of a contemporary family in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

Admission is free. Donations are optional.<\/p>\n

The play will be performed in the Clontarf\/Drumcondra area over three nights:<\/p>\n

Every autumn, thousands of migratory seabirds make their way through Irish waters to feed and ‘fuel up’ before continuing their long journey from one end of the Atlantic to the other. The diversity in species ranges from tiny sprites such as Storm Petrels to graceful giants like the Gannet. All this activity can be visible from our coastal headlands and this talk will illustrate how you can best see this spectacle for yourself (an activity known as ‘seawatching’) and also details the work being undertaken by BirdWatch Ireland to monitor migratory seabird populations (the Seatrack project).<\/p>\n

Shops will be open as normal. Most businesses are open as normal, but banks will be closed and schools are on holidays anyway. Many public service offices will be closed as well. But if you do have to work today, you have no right on overtime\/weekend pay, it is just a normal Friday.<\/p>\n

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

There will be 6 (!!) guided walks in the Dublin Mountains in April. The walks are organised by the Dublin Mountain partnership and are all of varying difficulty. There are a number of training hikes, a 8.5 hour walk for the serious hikers, an easy hike for beginners and also a “public transport” hike with a circular route starting and ending near a DART station.<\/p>\n

Good Friday – The oddest day of the year!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

This week is Good Friday, an important day for all Christians in the religious year and a very odd day for everybody in Ireland. Why is it odd?<\/p>\n

Well, with the big role the catholic religion plays in Ireland (Education is still dominated by catholic institutions, the majority of laws and rules are directly or indirectly influenced by the catholic church), you would think that Good Friday is a public holiday, but it isn’t. It is a bank holiday, but no public holiday. Which means that most of us will have to work on that day.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, when it comes to pubs, the day is even odder. Suddenly it is soooo important that there are special laws for it: Pubs are not allowed to open on Good Friday. (And it doesn’t matter if you are catholic or not, the all-caring Irish state is protecting you from yourself so that you don’t accidentally commit a sinful act of consuming alcohol on that day.) BUT….wait…it is permitted to sell alcohol IF it is in connection with a substantial meal, so that travelling people won’t have to miss their alcohol. And last year a number of Greyhound stadiums got a permission to sell alcohol. Hotels are allowed to sell alcohol, but restaurants are not. Mad!<\/p>\n

All a bit contradictory or hypocritical? You bet!<\/p>\n

Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining about the fact that people have a day less per year to get drunk. But this is a LAW in 2014, which means that the police is obliged to enforce it! Odd, outdated and just plain bonkers!<\/p>\n

And how do (too) many people in Ireland react to this oddness? With even odder behaviour! Watch Off-licenses on Thursday evening!! Some will have queues outside, others will just be packed. ALL will be super busy. Why? Because, “OMG, the pubs will be closed on Friday and how could I survive without alcohol for a WHOLE day?”<\/p>\n
