The week after the St. Patrick’s Festival is traditionally a little quieter, but there are nevertheless 150 events in this Dublin Event Guide again. That should keep you busy. ;-)<\/p>\n

I hope you had a good time last week. It seems that the City Centre was mayhem again after the parade and I wonder what has to happen for the Festival organisers to seriously think about defusing the situation. 200 arrests on Monday is mad. The number of people that got beaten up badly is shocking and probably rightly so, questions were asked about our love for Dublin. I decided to write my opinion about a public debate (or spat) between Trevor White and Ciaran Walsh in the This is Odd section this week, so have a look at the bottom of this e-mail.<\/p>\n

With all the St. Patrick’s Weekend festivities you might have forgotten one small, but crucial thing: Last week not one person got around to helping the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. It would be great if you could consider it this week! Thanks!<\/p>\n

This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This week you should check out the interesting-looking Silk Road Film Festival (we missed already half of it because the organisers were seemingly a little challenged with the spreading of the word). Then there is a quirky event on Saturday: “For the Birds” is the name.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the Nowruz Festival Family Day is probably the main event (The weekend after St. Patrick’s Day is traditionally a little lighter in events.)<\/p>\n

During the week, check out the Dubstarts Job Fair on Tuesday, on Thursday the Five Lamps Arts Festival starts, and on Friday the Fail Big Extravaganza is worth your attention.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Love the Lanes – Temple Bar Regeneration<\/h2>\n

Dublin City is asking you for your suggestions on how to show the lanes of Temple Bar some love.<\/p>\n

This is the start of the Dublin City Council invitation:<\/p>\n

“”Love the Lanes” is looking for new ideas and creative possibilities to help us rethink how we use the back lanes of Temple Bar. Over the years these lanes have fallen into disuse and have become magnets for anti-social behaviour. Our goal is to reactivate these lanes for people to use and enjoy.”<\/p>\n

You have until 21 April to submit your ideas. The four selected lanes are very very narrow and really away from the normal walking routes in Temple Bar. I bet that many Dubliners aren’t even aware that these lanes exist. It would be really great to bring them back to life.<\/p>\n

RTE The Family Project – Families needed<\/h2>\n

A new RTE show is called “The Family Project” and the producers at Animo TV are currently looking for families with young children that need a hand.<\/p>\n

The Family Project is a show where families get time to address concerns and problems and come up with new ways to move forward. Families are matched up with a known personality that has gone through similar difficulties themselves. Through this show the prodicers hope to show new ways of learning as a family.<\/p>\n

If you know any family (maybe it’s your own) that you think matches the criteria just get them to call Sharon on 01 646 8246 to discuss it further or send her an e-mail (sharon@animo.ie). Electric Run<\/h2>\n
\n

This is definitely one of the strangest 5km runs\/walks that I have ever heard about. The Electric Run is a night time event were light landscapes, light and sound scenes and runners with glow sticks and LED lights create an “electric wonderland” that focuses much more on the event than on the run.<\/p>\n

At EUR 43 per person this is definitely not a cheap event, but some “Electric Run” YouTube videos from similar events in the USA seem to indicate that the participants are having a good time.<\/p>\n

The whole event takes place in the grounds of the RDS in Ballsbridge and the map here http:\/\/electricrun.ie\/dublin\/#ff_s=cXoRR<\/a> shows an unusual route for a 5km run. It was expected that the event would sell out, but it seems that (at the time of writing this) there are still tickets available. The Electric Run takes place on Sat 22 March at 19:30.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

As part of the exhibition, Tonight, you can call me Trish, artist James \u00d3 hAodha has created an encounter with a specific community of interest: Teasing out notions of what constitutes \u2018audience\u2019 and \u2018exhibition\u2019, the artist plays with the presence of three hand-picked exotic birds, a Macaw, a Cockatoo, and an African Grey Parrot.<\/p>\n

The birds will be in the gallery simultaneously both as viewer and live performer, activating, intervening and becoming complicit with the language of display, aesthetics, and the mediation of contemporary visual art. The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

The Silk Road Film Festival runs from 20-25 March and shows films from countries which were once part of the historical network of ancient trade routes, called Silk Road. The festival focuses in particular on Asian, Arabian and Middle Eastern cinema.<\/p>\n

Most of the screenings are free and only a few have a very low admission charge (EUR 3), which is great, but surprisingly the organisers only published the programme on Thursday 20 March. Maybe a little late if the events start on the same day? You unfortunately missed the events on 20 and on the main day, on Fri 21 March because of that, but check out the programme nevertheless.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Silk Road Film Festival runs from 20-25 March and shows films from countries which were once part of the historical network of ancient trade routes, called Silk Road. The festival focuses in particular on Asian, Arabian and Middle Eastern cinema.<\/p>\n

Most of the screenings are free and only a few have a very low admission charge (EUR 3), which is great, but surprisingly the organisers only published the programme on Thursday 20 March. Maybe a little late if the events start on the same day? The Silk Road Film Festival runs from 20-25 March and shows films from countries which were once part of the historical network of ancient trade routes, called Silk Road. The festival focuses in particular on Asian, Arabian and Middle Eastern cinema.<\/p>\n

Most of the screenings are free and only a few have a very low admission charge (EUR 3), which is great, but surprisingly the organisers only published the programme on Thursday 20 March. Maybe a little late if the events start on the same day? You unfortunately missed the events on 20 and on the main day, on Fri 21 March because of that, but check out the programme nevertheless.<\/p>\n

“Belfast\u2019s Linen Hall Library is the city\u2019s oldest Library. In 2013 it celebrated 225 years of existence. John Killen is its current Librarian. He will relate the fascinating story behind an important, but until recently lost Irish manuscript on which he has been engaged in research. The manuscript has a dynastic and romantic purpose. Assiduously researched, but unsigned, its authorship will now be revealed, 225 years after its completion. John will narrate the story contained within the manuscript covering the history and lineage of a famous Irish dynasty.”<\/p>\n

The lecture will be followed by a reception for the launch of a facsimile copy of the manuscript in the RDS Library.<\/p>\n

Do we love Dublin or not? Actually do we have to??<\/strong><\/p>\n

A debate or a bit of a spat has kicked off in the Irish Times between Trevor White (former owner of The Dubliner Magazine and now director of The Little Museum of Dublin), who thinks Irish people take too little pride in Dublin, and Ciaran Walsh (editor of Le Cool), who disagrees with Trevor White and thinks that we have plenty of pride for Dublin. In his reply Ciaran Walsh mentions the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” and other Dublin websites as evidence that there is lots of love for the city. Thanks Ciaran for the shout out!<\/p>\n

I find the discussion quite interesting because it is about something that can hardly be defined. Pride or Patriotism, what is that really? Can we really compare who is prouder? I have my doubts.<\/p>\n

When you read the articles, you will find that they both make some good arguments. Yes, we should be a little more loyal to our chosen (We all have chosen Dublin to a degree otherwise we wouldn’t live here!) home town Dublin. Nevertheless we have a hell of a lot of criticism for Dublin if you get us going. But on the other hand by living and enjoying the culture here (instead of constantly running away), we are showing plentiful that we ARE loyal to Dublin. So maybe it is a Love Hate relationship?<\/p>\n

In the next step this raises the question if we really have to be proud of a City? What is a City? Buildings? Streets? People? Events? All of this and nothing. I love what Dublin offers us through the hard work of some of the people living here. So, yes, I do love Dublin. But I also hate the public transport situation, the traffic, the crime and a good few other aspects of our Dublin. In these categories I hate Dublin (and some of its people). Maybe pride or patriotism is the bottom line result after subtracting the “hate” from the “love”?<\/p>\n
