I got lots of mails from people that wanted to hear more about our great holidays with Northern Light Hunt and Dog Sledding. I have put a few (just 5) pictures on my Facebook Profile. 3 are of the dog and there are two of the best 16 of the Northern Lights and you should be able to see the pictures if you go to http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/joerg.steegmueller<\/a> Unfortunately I didn’t have time during the week to write this travel report so instead I will just send it to all the people that wanted to hear about it. This weekend is quite busy and with the St Patrick’s Festival, next week will be even busier. Let’s hope that the weather will play ball and all will be great. In Germany, where around this time of the year there could easily still be snow, it will be +20 degrees this weekend. Mad weather! But when it comes to an outdoors festival next weekend, I will take 20 degrees any day.<\/p>\n

Ohh, and if you talk to any American friends this week, make sure that they know that it is Paddy’s Day and NOT Patty’s Day! :-) I don’t know where they got “Patty” from!? Maybe from the same place where they got Aluminum instead of Aluminium? :-P<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

This week my pick list is a little longer than in other weeks, there are lots of interesting events.<\/p>\n

Let me start with Saturday. Here I recommend the Re-enactment of the Napoleonic Wars in Collins Barracks, the Trade School and also the Women Inspiring Change Workshops if you want to learn something and enhance skills. The market and also party element of the day is at the D-Light Studio Market Party and some more learning in the evening with the Sidewalk Astronomers. Busy day, but it all can be done! ;-)<\/p>\n

On Sunday I might go to the monthly Fusion Sunday World Culture Market, if I were female, I would probably go to the Women Inspiring Change – Workshop and gender-independent, there is the Muro Mini Fest. If you have kids and want to teach them a bit more about nature and wetlands and sea, checkout the event that takes place on Bull Island.<\/p>\n

During the week there is an interesting talk about the Bridges of Dublin on Wednesday, then there is the Science Gallery Mediator Talk on Thursday and on Friday St Patrick’s Festival will start with the Festival Ceili, with a Milk and Cookies Stories Storytelling event and with the Craft Beer and Food Market in the CHQ Building.<\/p>\n

Busy week and it will get busier next weekend with the St. Patrick’s Festival!<\/p>\n

Software Usability Test – Paid testers needed<\/h2>\n

Are you reliable and know how to use a computer? YakPact (www.yakpact.com<\/a>) needs you and pays for your time. YakPact is a company in Dun Laoghaire that helps other companies to improve the behaviour and skills of customer-facing staff and they are running usability tests for software they are developing.<\/p>\n

Cognitive Psychologist Dr. Christof van Nimwegen from Holland is running the tests and you are needed for 3 hours (2 hours on the first day and another 1 hour a few days later) and you will get EUR 30 for your time and help. The tests are running in assigned time slots during the day between 24 March and 27 March, in Dun Laoghaire.<\/p>\n

HMV moving back into Grafton Street<\/h2>\n

In an announcement that surprised some, HMV has announced that they will open a shop in Grafton Street again.<\/p>\n

It won’t be their old shop, which has been taken over by Massimo Dutti. Instead it will be in the shop were A-Ware previously was. A-Ware was next to BT2 at the corner with the tiny street (Lemon Street) that brings you to the Royal Hibernian Way. A-Ware had to close before Christmas after going into receivership.<\/p>\n

It is expected that the new store will open within 3 months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Shocking revelation: Dublin City is paying clampers commission<\/h2>\n
\n

For years Dublin City assured us that the purpose of clamping cars is to increase the availability of car park spaces not to make money and we were told that clampers were NOT incentivised to clamp cars.<\/p>\n

When you read this article here http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/consumer\/dublin-city-council-sets-60-000-target-for-clampers-1.1715481<\/a> you will realise that with all the incentives the clampers are getting and with the targets set, they will now start behaving differently. They will be on the hunt for cars to clamp. Gone is the few minutes grace period they might give you. With a “clamp lots and go home early AND get a bonus” you can imagine how things will change.<\/p>\n

And before you complain about the councillors agreeing to that, I Have to tell you that they weren’t even told. Dublin City Management decided that and didn’t tell or ask the elected councillors. I can’t wait until we have an elected Mayor in Dublin and get rid of the current City Management.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

This event happens regularly on a Friday, but in March there are two nights of star gazing on Friday 07 March and Saturday 08 March. The Friday event is the normal monthly observing night. The Saturday event is the Irish Astronomical Society’s participation in ISAN 7, the Seventh International Sidewalk Astronomy Night. This year ISAN is specially dedicated to the memory of John Dobson (1915-2014) who started the idea of Sidewalk Astronomy in San Francisco. The idea spread to amateur astronomical societies around the world.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

Reverse Marketing Logic!? Lidl and Pancake Tuesday.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Tuesday was Pancake Tuesday. That odd day when people rush to the super market to buy Pancake Mix or flour, eggs, milk etc. and then you need Golden Syrup, Maple Syrup, Nutella, fresh cream etc etc. Sure, you might not have eaten a pancake the whole year (maybe you don’t even particularly like them) but on Pancake Tuesday, there is NO other option than to have lots of pancakes. It is a national compulsion and is VERY odd behaviour … but that is not the “This is Odd!” story this week.<\/p>\n

The “This is Odd!” Story this week deals with Lidl and the Pancake Tuesday. You know in the run up to Christmas, we all expect that the popular items\/presents will go up in price and will then be cheaper once Christmas is over. And when there is a big event in town (maybe a Rugby game), then you would expect that the Hotel Rooms are more expensive on the key dates and will be cheaper before and after the event.<\/p>\n

I buy nearly all my food in Lidl and on Pancake Tuesday I needed to get something. Walking through the shop I saw that many ingredients for Pancake making where strategically arranged in the shop so that everybody would easily find them. But to my surprise, the prices had not been increased, instead for most items the prices were significantly lower than on other days. THIS is odd! …but it is a great idea! Next year people might remember that Lidl REDUCES prices on the key day.<\/p>\n

Two Examples: Nutella was 1.99 on Tuesday instead of 2.69 and the Ready-made Pancake Mix was 0.69 instead of 0.99 on other days.<\/p>\n
