Hi all!<\/a><\/p>\n

I was away last week on a rare holiday. We went to Tromso in Norway and had a super time. The Northern Lights showed up (just minutes before our “Northern Light Hunt” came to an end) and we had the best time with Huskies and a sled. Dog sledding is an amazing experience, especially if you mush (“drive” the sled) yourself. We came back on Thursday, but flight times and Northern Light Hunt worked in such a way that I didn’t sleep on Wednesday night, only had a bit of sleep in the plane. Then on Thursday I started writing the Dublin Event Guide after an early evening nap and worked through the night and now on Saturday morning I am still not finished. Why that delay? New Food Market in Dublin from 2015<\/h2>\n

Good news for Dublin! The Victorian fruit and vegetable market between Capel Street and Four Courts will be redeveloped and will open in 2015 as a food market. 80 traders will find space there. Some indoors, some outoors, some permanent, some temporary. It sounds very promising and would be a great enhancement to Dublin. I imagine something like the food market just off the Ramblas in Barcelona, hopefully the food will be as good! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

On Sat 08 March a one-day only Trade School will take place in the Dominick Street Community Centre, Dublin 1.<\/a><\/p>\n

Trade School is an adult workshop where people barter for knowledge. Knowledge is practical skills, talents, hobbies and experience. Anyone can teach, anyone can learn and no teaching experience is required. Everyone is welcome to attend classes and no money will exchange hands, instead teachers give their knowledge in return for items.<\/a><\/p>\n

New Cultural and Heritage Centre at College Green!<\/h2>\n

And there is more good news for Dublin: It has been announced that a new Cultural and Heritage Centre will be created at Parliament Buildings at College Green. Bank of Ireland has made the space available for the centre for a ten year period, and will cover the costs of refurbishment and operation of the new facility. The Cultural and Heritage Centre will be accessed via the James Gandon-designed entrance to the College Green buildings on Westmoreland Street.<\/a><\/p>\n

Throughout 2012, Richard Mosse and his collaborators Trevor Tweeten and Ben Frost travelled in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, infiltrating armed rebel groups in a war zone plagued by frequent ambushes, massacres and systematic violence. The resulting installation, The Enclave, is the culmination of Mosses\u2019 attempt to radically rethink war photography. The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/a><\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/a><\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that! <\/a><\/p>\n

The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. The fair is a right that is firmly written down. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.<\/a><\/p>\n

Instead of stopping it, Dublin City decided to limit the market to twice per year and so the newly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September.<\/a><\/p>\n

To take the trading element out somewhat and to add another \u201csofter\u201d dynamic, music, storytelling and other entertainment was added.<\/a><\/p>\n

The March Horse Fair is the first this year and only the third since the changes to the new rules and nobody knows yet if it will still be a horse market or maybe not anymore because the traders stay away and sell and buy their horses elsewhere.<\/a><\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/a><\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/a><\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/a><\/p>\n

Prof. McMaster received a call a few days before Christmas asking if he would take an MSF emergency team into the country to boost surgical capacity in areas where the fighting had been most intense. He spent a number of weeks on the ground treating war-wounded patients close to the front lines.<\/a><\/p>\n

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.<\/a><\/p>\n

This event happens regularly on a Friday, but in March there are two nights of star gazing on Friday 07 March and Saturday 08 March. The Friday event is the normal monthly observing night. The Saturday event is the Irish Astronomical Society’s participation in ISAN 7, the Seventh International Sidewalk Astronomy Night. This year ISAN is specially dedicated to the memory of John Dobson (1915-2014) who started the idea of Sidewalk Astronomy in San Francisco. The idea spread to amateur astronomical societies around the world.<\/a><\/p>\n

Expensive Ireland? Meet Norway!
<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was in Norway for a few days last week and we had an amazing time with Northern Light sightings and dog sledding, but apart from all these great things, there was one aspect that definitely was an eye opener: Often enough I complain about crazy expensive prices here in Ireland, but I had not expected that it can be SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive elsewhere.<\/a><\/p>\n

A 1.5l bottle of Coke in a supermarket is EUR 3 in Norway. In Ireland you get a 2l bottle for EUR 1.50-2.00 sometimes. An 500ml bottle is approx. EUR 1-1.50 here. It is just EUR 0.60 in Germany, but it is a whopping EUR 2.40 in Norway. And we are talking about supermarket prices here!<\/a><\/p>\n

And less comparable food? A normal pizza can cost you EUR 30 in Norway! That is just shocking.<\/a><\/p>\n

You are wondering if the salaries are higher than in Ireland? And you are right! They are definitely higher, so it seems that people there can afford these prices, but for us – even for us living in Ireland – they are just amazing.<\/a><\/p>\n

Maybe I will complain a little less here now? Just maybe! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Once you get over the initial shock it won’t get that much easier, but you start accepting and for the four days we were there, it was acceptable. All the other parts of the holidays definitely made up for it anyway. It was a great holiday, I have to say!<\/a><\/p>\n

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to http:\/\/www.dublineventguide.com<\/a>, where they can subscribe.
