Last week the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events reached not just one, but three new records: We now have more than 20,000 subscribers, more than 43,000 Facebook Likes and more than 5,000 smartphone web app users!<\/p>\n

I am very happy about this, grateful to you for your support, inspired to grow the Dublin Event Guide much much bigger and also a little bit proud on having reached all that with no advertisement, no marketing budget and just through word of mouth.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) started as a really short mail to 10 of my friends in 2007. There was no plan to turn it into a publication with such wide appeal and at the time, I could have never imagined how big it would get. Four months later the mailing list had grown to just 180 subscribers, but then it took off and with your help it kept growing and growing and growing. Don’t stop! This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

Let’s see, what is there to pick from this week:<\/p>\n

The Sports & Fitness Show in the RDS on Sat+Sun looks interesting if you are into physical exercise.<\/p>\n

The Progressive Film Club is back on Saturday with some though provoking films and the Russian Culture Festival this year is slimmed down a good bit, but still worth checking out (mainly events in the Libraries). The Dublin Flea Market on Sunday is always worth a visit as well.<\/p>\n

On Monday the Adult Learning Festival starts with lots of free educational events and I would definitely go to the discussion about “Should Dublin have a real mayor” on Monday evening…if I could.<\/p>\n

Also check out Banter: Living for the City on Wednesday and then there are surprisingly many gigs taking place.<\/p>\n

All in all, an interesting week, BUT I will miss out (or maybe not!! ;-) ): I will leave you behind this week and will go on holidays (doesn’t happen too often). You will hear from me again next week because I will be back in time (just!) for the next Dublin Event Guide, but until then you will find me North of the Arctic Circle, visiting Tromso in Norway, trying to see the Northern Lights and giving Dog Sledding a go. Babytalk is a brand-new festival for babies and their families, expectant parents and anyone thinking of starting or adding to their family. Families and parents-to-be will be provided with information and can purchase baby-related products in a fun, relaxed environment.<\/p>\n

The festival will feature shopping and exhibitors who will be showcasing their products and services and there will be a series of short talks from expert speakers including David Carey, Genevieve Becker, Sue Jameson, Fiona Rea and more.<\/p>\n

An entertainment programme of music, stand-up comedy and children’s entertainers, including RTE’s Reuben, and Irish Mammies comedian Colm O’Regan will entertain the whole family.<\/p>\n

There will be product & service demonstrations; an “Information Station” with representatives from parent support agencies; a reading and storytelling area with readings by authors and children entertainers. And there will be Cafe and play areas, free car parking, buggy parking, baby changing & feeding areas.<\/p>\n

St. Patrick’s Day Festival launched – Minister criticises Mayor of Dublin<\/h2>\n
\n

At a photo call at the bandstand in St. Stephen’s Green, the St. Patrick’s Day Festival Programme was launched by Minister for Tourism Michael Ring on Thursday. A few dressed up dancers and dressed up children were there and the event was rather low profile.<\/p>\n

But Michael Ring gave it some significance with his surprising criticism of Dublin’s current Mayor Oisin Quinn. The Irish Times <\/a>reports: “Mr Ring said the festival was worth EUR 122 million to the city and he was \u201csurprised\u201d at Mr Quinn\u2019s critique of this year\u2019s programme as \u201ctacky\u201d and designed for those who want to drink alcohol and \u201cthrow on leprechaun hats\u201d.”<\/p>\n

If you have been at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the last few years you know what Oisin Quinn is talking about. Not the parade itself is tacky, but the celebration of it. Leprechauns everywhere, as long as it is green and looks like a shamrock, it is worn. Is this what a National Day should be about? Oisin Quinn, seemingly wants a more high-brow affair, celebrating poets and musicians<\/a> and that is maybe a step too far, but nearly everybody would agree that the alcohol excesses in the City Centre after the parade are NOT sending the right message to tourists abroad.<\/p>\n

So, who is right? Oisin Quinn is right about the need to revamp the festival programme and he is right about the tackiness, the leprechaun hats and the alcohol-related madness. Maybe he is not totally right about the absolute need to highlight Dublin’s literary and cultural heritage, but there is room for compromises.<\/p>\n

And Michael Ring? Well, let’s face, it, he has no clue about St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin, it seems. He will be in the Netherlands to represent Ireland there; and on 17 March, he said he would be at the parade in Westport in Co Mayo (Population of 5,500 people!) , where his constituency is. Maybe he should come to Dublin to find out what is really happening here.<\/p>\n

The St. Patrick’s Day Festival this year will take place from 14-17 March.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Trade School Dublin – Teachers required<\/h2>\n
\n

On Sat 08 March a one-day only Trade School will take place in the Dominick Street Community Centre, Dublin 1.<\/p>\n

Trade School is an adult workshop where people barter for knowledge. Knowledge is practical skills, talents, hobbies and experience. Anyone can teach, anyone can learn and no teaching experience is required. Everyone is welcome to attend classes and no money will exchange hands, instead teachers give their knowledge in return for items.<\/p>\n

If you would like to teach something, you should register on the webiste now at http:\/\/www.tradeschool.coop\/dublin<\/a> Some suggested topics are Home DIY, Bike Repair, Music, Art and Crafts, Clothes Alterations, etc. The volunteers who run the Trade School are currently looking for teachers and once the list of classes is compiled (each class is about 1.5 hours), then you can book classes. The training idoesn’t cost any money, but in return you provide something the teacher asks for.<\/p>\n

It is a great concept and has successfully been used during the time Granby Park was active.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Free Makeover for your Garden!?<\/h2>\n
\n

The RTE series “Super Garden” is looking for gardens that need a makeover. The series is in its 6th year and every year a number of gardens are turned from “meh” into “Wow!”. Smithfield Art Tunnel closing after two years<\/h2>\n
\n

A long and very narrow piece of unused land next to the Luas tracks in Smithfield was turned into an a community garden and open air gallery two years ago and because the lease is up, the “Smithfield Art Tunnel<\/a>” will have to be dismantled by the 10 March. Check the Smithfield Art Tunnel out before its gone and do it soon because the dismantling will start well before the deadline.<\/p>\n

Some might be surprised, because we have somewhat different expectations when we hear the words “garden” and “gallery”, but keep in mind that art can have lots of different faces and garden doesn’t have to involve flowers and landscaping.<\/p>\n

The importance about the Art Tunnel is that a disused, derelict space in Dublin was turned into something that made the space useful again and with more than 300 unused spaces in Dublin, it could and should be a signal and inspiration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Throughout 2012, Richard Mosse and his collaborators Trevor Tweeten and Ben Frost travelled in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, infiltrating armed rebel groups in a war zone plagued by frequent ambushes, massacres and systematic violence. The resulting installation, The Enclave, is the culmination of Mosses\u2019 attempt to radically rethink war photography. The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Russian Festival of Culture starts today and continues until 02 March. There will be a variety of concerts and film screenings and talks, but there will NOT be a big public celebration of Russian Culture this year. I n previous years a Family Day at Meeting House Square with performances and market stalls in Temple Bar took place, this is unfortuantely not the case this year.<\/p>\n

There will be a Family Day on Sun 02 Mar, but that will be in the Ballsbridge Hotel (Admission EUR 5) and will probably appeal more to the Russian community instead of introducing other nationalities to Russian culture.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!<\/p>\n

The eighth nationwide Adult Learners’ Festival will take place from 24 Feb-01 Mar. The Adult Learners’ Festival is a celebration of adult learning coordinated by AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation.<\/p>\n

The Festival will provide events from information sessions, taster workshops, sample lectures to small gatherings of people who love to learn. AONTAS believes that all adults in Ireland should have equal access to learning opportunities.<\/p>\n

Should Dublin have a real mayor? – City Intersections<\/h2>\n

Currently Dublin’s “Lord Mayor” is nothing else but one of the councillors who is appointed for one year by the other councillors to be the top representative of the city. He\/she has no real power over anything that happens in Dublin. The most powerful person is the City Manager, it seems. He is an unelected “business manager” (like a CEO), who even ignores the councillors if he has a different opinion.<\/p>\n

Many think the Mayor of Dublin should be in charge and should be elected. This would possibly need a different calibre of a person than the current councillors or the current type of City Managers. Because the new Mayor would have to be electable AND able.<\/p>\n

The City Intersections event on Monday will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the current and the possible future scenario. Admission is free and all details are on the website below.<\/p>\n

My personal opinion is that the Mayor definitely should be elected and should be in charge of every decision in the City. However, I am not convinced that (this is the plan at the moment) the four parts of Dublin (Dublin City, Fingal County, South County Dublin and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown) should be merged to ONE part for which the elected mayor would be responsible. Currently there is a VERY healthy competition in some areas (e.g. events!) between the four parts of the city and it would be bad news if that came to an end.<\/p>\n

I would love to go to that City Intersections event, but unfortunately won’t be able to go, so I hope you will be there instead. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

English speakers prefer four-legged animals – English is Odd!<\/strong><\/p>\n

The English language has words like pig, cow, calf and deer to name four-legged animals and words like chicken and duck to name two-legged animals.<\/p>\n

But what happens, (Apologies to all vegetarians! Don’t read any further!) if a part of that animal is put on your plate? Flesh becomes meat and pigs become pork, cows become beef, calves become veal and deer become venison. Odd that we need to change the word completely. Is it to distract from the origin of the product?<\/p>\n

Interestingly the sensitivity about the link between the animal and its meat only extends to four-legged animals. Because the chicken on your plate is still called chicken and the duck is still called duck!<\/p>\n

I guess English speakers prefer four-legged animals!? Odd!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
