We reached another “round” number this week: 42,000 Facebook Likes! Nice! Thanks for all your help. The Dublin Event Guide wouldn’t be where it is today without your big help. …And the number of Likes increases continually, so we will grow more and more. :-) Garth Brooks has clearly still more Fans, but we are hot on his heels. ;-)<\/p>\n

But what is this with Garth Brooks? Is it four or five concerts now? Isn’t that mad for a tiny country like Ireland? I think if the Beatles and Elvis Presley together had a concert here this year, they wouldn’t get the same number of paying customers. Maybe it is just the scarcity panic that we human beings get. If you can’t have something, you want it a lot more than if it is easily available.<\/p>\n

Do you think it would work if I said that I will stop accepting more Dublin Event Guide subscribers once we reach 20,000? Would that be enough to start a panic? Maybe I should try it! ;-)<\/p>\n

You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!<\/p>\n

And what do we do as grown ups? We are afraid of failure! How did that happen!? Maybe you were smarter as a little child!?<\/p>\n

So don’t be afraid, accept that failing is the most important part of learning and enjoy the failing, because you will Fail Better every time until you don’t fail anymore.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Babytalk is a brand-new festival for babies and their families, expectant parents and anyone thinking of starting or adding to their family. Families and parents-to-be will be provided with information and can purchase baby-related products in a fun, relaxed environment.<\/p>\n

The festival will feature shopping and exhibitors who will be showcasing their products and services and there will be a series of short talks from expert speakers including David Carey, Genevieve Becker, Sue Jameson, Fiona Rea and more.<\/p>\n

An entertainment programme of music, stand-up comedy and children’s entertainers, including RTE’s Reuben, and Irish Mammies comedian Colm O’Regan will entertain the whole family.<\/p>\n

There will be product & service demonstrations; an “Information Station” with representatives from parent support agencies; a reading and storytelling area with readings by authors and children entertainers. And there will be Cafe and play areas, free car parking, buggy parking, baby changing & feeding areas.<\/p>\n

Eventbrite: Online ticketing service for all event organisers (free or paid)<\/h2>\n

Last week, I mentioned Eventbrite<\/a>, the online self-service ticketing platform, here in the Dublin News and a number of people contacted me to find out how the current special offer from Eventbrite works.<\/p>\n

It is very simple: If you organise a free event with Eventbrite.ie<\/a>, it is always free. If you sell tickets for it, you can currently also try the service without paying the usual service charge, as long as you are a new user. An online payment processing fees of around 3.5 percent still applies. The normal service fee after this promotion is 2.5 percent of the ticket price + EUR 0.75 per ticket.<\/p>\n

It couldn’t be simpler and the deal applies to all events that are published before 15 April and take place any time in 2014. Check it out here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The Yelp Festival of Firsts is taking place from 28 Jan to 28 Feb, Yelp Dublin has programmed loads of free to nearly free events happening around the city to encourage people to get out and about their city and try something new.
\nFrom belly dancing to star gazing, yoga to new menu sampling, hill walking and kayaking, there is bound to be something in there for everyone. From paintings to wood and plaster sculptures, a work of emotional response to the trials faced by working class people during the 1913 Lockout emerged.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I was at the opening of the exhibition and it is definitely a good one. I definitely recommend the exhibition! Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.<\/p>\n

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world\u2019s worst or madest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.<\/p>\n

I was at the opening of the exhibition and it is definitely a good one. I definitely recommend the exhibition! Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12\/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children.<\/p>\n

Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Irish Aikido Federation are running free Aikido Taster Classesfor the whole month of February every Mon, Tues and Wed at 19:00. Prospective members are invited to attend at these classes to get a ‘sense’ of Aikido training.<\/p>\n

Discrimination or not? LGBT and RTE and New York
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rory O’Neill’s (Panti) interview on the Saturday Night was the most harmless and correct statement about issues of homophobia and I wrote last week here in this This is Odd! section that RTE absolutely should not have paid a cent to anyone. EUR 85k were paid to the Iona Institute and columnist John Waters for having been mentioned as people\/entities that have a problem with ga y people. If you listen to the interview (for example here<\/a>) and you should, you will hear that all Rory O’Neill said that John Waters and the Iona Institute are “horrible and mean about ga ys”. And then he says that “if you are arguing that g ay people need to be treated in any way differently than anybody else, then you are a Homophobe”. Can’t disagree with that either. But I can’t hear anywhere in the interview that it was said that the two entities that got 85k of OUR money are Homophobes. So, Rory O’Neill was totally right and I couldn’t agree more with him.<\/p>\n

Why am I repeating what I wrote last week? Well because more has happened since.<\/p>\n

It now emerged that the new major of New York, Bill de Blasio, has decided not to partake in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York, because he says “I simply disagree with the organisers of that parade in their exclusion of some individuals in this city”. And he seems to refer to the exclusion of LGBT groups. According to the Irish Times<\/a>: “The parade’s organisers have said that g ays and le sb ians are welcome to march but that public displays celebrating being gay would detract from commemorating St Patrick and Irish heritage.”<\/p>\n

So are they excluded or not? Let’s – for the moment – assume that the organisers are right and they are NOT excluded, well then it comes down to the “public displays celebrating being ga y”.<\/p>\n

The organisers of the St. Patrick’s Parade in New York are the Ancient Order of Hibernians, an arch-conservative catholic organisation and I am surprised that the LGBT groups in New York even want to be mentioned in the same sentence with them, but that’s their decision.<\/p>\n

The important point here is that it needs to be clarified what the different parade participants are allowed to do and what not. If some carry a banner that says “We are the Firefighters of New York”, then the LGBT group should be allowed to carry a banner “We are the LGBT community of New York”. No discussion! If on the other hand, the LGBT group would like to carry banners that fight for their rights or any other type of banners, then I am with Rory O’Neill as well: There should not be any different treatment for anybody.<\/p>\n

So can somebody please clarify what is meant with “public displays celebrating being g ay” and what on the other hand, the LGBT community would expect to display? Without that information the whole conflict is rather odd!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
