This week my timing is all over the place (even worse than in other weeks) so I won’t spend much time with this introduction. All events are described as always, but there is one thing that I want to point out because it is not an event, but some interesting heads-up for some of you. If you organise events (free or non-free) and are struggling with a ticketing solution, check the article about Eventbrite in today’s Dublin News. They are around for a long time (and have sold more than 150mio tickets), but have decided to pay a lot more attention to Dublin than they did before and are currently offering a completely free service until 15 April. Check it out!<\/p>\n

The bill for sending the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) week after week through a professional E-mail sending company is a relatively low EUR 170 every month, but because I am not earning a cent from this work, I need your help with that. Happy New Year! And welcome to all the Horses that this year is symbolised by. No, I am not one month late, I am refering (as you most likely already realised) to the the Chinese New Year that started on Friday.<\/p>\n

This weekend the Chinese New Year’s Festival continues with the main public event, a Chinese Carnival on Meeting House Square. This is the headline event this weekend and otherwise the event world is winter-season appropriate: Quiet. I will watch the Superbowl on Sunday night and there will be lots of Superbowl parties in town, but I fully understand that that is not everyone’s cup of tea. The Rugby this weekend might appeal more to some.<\/p>\n

If you are interested in gigs or in “Minding yourself”, you will find lots of events during the week. In Dublin there are lots of live music gigs taking place EVERY single day of the week, it is so great! And the other interesting programme is the “Mind Yourself!” programme organised by the libraries all over Dublin. Cool Libraries they are! :-)<\/p>\n

Do you organise events? Check out Eventbrite’s (free) ticketing service<\/h2>\n

Whether you are running a free event with limited seats or a non-free event, one of the things that definitely will occupy your mind and might even stress you during the planning is the ticketing or registration of your attendees.<\/p>\n

Selling tickets at the door only can cause a lot of stress and there must be a better solution even for small-ish events. You might think selling or distributing tickets in advance is only for big concerts (Like selling 240,000 tickets (!) for Garth Brooks this week.) Not so! With the right partner even your 10 or 50 or 200 tickets will be sold as professionally online. The solution is Eventbrite<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Eventbrite has been active in Ireland for a while already, and is currently expanding its service here with a dedicated team for Ireland. It is a an online ticketing platform that helps you sell AND promote your events. And they care even about your small or free event:<\/p>\n

If you run a free event, you never pay ANYTHING for their ticketing service! It can’t be better than that! – And if you do sell tickets or registrations, you currently pay no Eventbrite fees for your events either, as long as you are a new user and you publish your events before April 15 (an online payment processing fee of around 3.5 percent still applies). Their normal service fee after this promotion is 2.5 percent of the ticket price + EUR 0.75 per ticket.<\/p>\n

That’s a brilliant deal! And there is no minimum ticket number that you have to sell and you don’t have to sell exclusively through Eventbrite<\/a> either.<\/p>\n

The Exchange Dublin will have to close! :-(<\/h2>\n

Many of you know The Exchange Dublin! Maybe you have never been there, but with sometimes up to 10 free events per week, you most likely came across it at least here in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). The Exchange Dublin is in the old part of Temple Bar at the corner of Essex Street West and Exchange Street Upper and opposite the Paramount Hotel.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, really bad news have emerged during the week: The Exchange will be closed and it seems that the reason are neighbours who have complained about “anti-social behaviour” in or outside the alcohol-free Exchange.<\/p>\n

The reason why the news is so bad is because The Exchange was one of very very few really inclusive venues that offered their space for nearly free to a very diverse range of often emerging arts forms who will now have no-where to go. 10-15 free events less per week is another shocker.<\/p>\n

The doors had to get closed this evening, but there MIGHT be a possibility that events will still take place in the venue until 08 Feb. So there is still time to sign the petition here<\/a> and\/or lobby the City Arts Office. Then there is “Care of the Collection” (18 Jan – 30 May), a presentation of three paintings that were preserved by the National Gallery. And for the rest of the year “From the Archive: The Story of the National Gallery of Ireland” (30 Jan-14 Dec) will be on show.<\/p>\n

RADE (Recovery through Art, Drama, and Education) worked with several participants on the production of an art exhibit based on the 1913 Lockout. Over eight months, the artists immersed themselves in the stories and history of the Lockout. The participants, many of whom are not originally artists, created art for this historical event. From paintings to wood and plaster sculptures, a work of emotional response to the trials faced by working class people during the 1913 Lockout emerged.<\/p>\n

UCD 3D Printer Challenge<\/h2>\n

To mark the official opening of a new purpose built space for the Innovation Academy at UCD, a 3D Printer Challenge will take place this weekend in the Shackleton Lounge, Innovation Academy.<\/p>\n

Over 40 teams (181 contestants!) will build a 3D printer “from scratch” and then design and print out their model of choice. Winners will have the choice of attending the 3D Printshow in Paris or London later this year and each team will be allowed to keep their 3D printer. The prize giving is at 17:00.<\/p>\n

The teams are made up of professors, post graduates and undergraduates from the wider UCD Community and from other colleges (Trinity College Dublin, National College Art & Design, IADT, DIT and DCU) and they have a total of 30 hours to complete the build of the printer and the first print.<\/p>\n

With many 3D printer kits explaining that they can be built by one person in 8-16 hours and others specifying a max of 24 hours, the 30 hour target doesn’t appear to be tooo tight, but maybe there are hidden challenges.<\/p>\n

The event starts on Friday and then on Saturday everyone is invited to watch the 3D printer building and see what the teams will print. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Super Bowl XLVIII will take place tonight. The game will be played at the MetLife Stadium, at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey (home to the New York Giants and New York Jets). The NFC champions, the Seattle Seahawks and the AFC champions, the Denver Broncos will play against each other.<\/p>\n

It is one of the most important American sports events every year, but it cathes on in Dublin more and more. Lots of Superbowl Parties take place in pubs where the game is shown life and (hopefully in all cases) from start to finish. If you don’t want to go out, you can watch it at home on Channel 4 (22:30-03:00). The kick off is at 23:30.<\/p>\n

RTE throwing your hard earned money away<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you have a TV and pay your TV licence, then I’d say this hurts every time. Paying EUR 160 every year to a commercial station that pays their “stars” absolutely ridiculous salaries is bad enough. But when they then take YOUR money and give it – without being forced to – to one of the most discriminating so-called Catholic organisations is just adding insult to injury.<\/p>\n

Paying compensation for insulting someone usually requires that you 1) insult someone and 2) are forced by a court or similar to pay compensation. The interview with Rory O’Neill on the Saturday Night show that was the reason for RTE paying compensation and apologising to an organisation that wasn’t even directly addressed is an insult to every license payer.<\/p>\n

Philip O’Connor, a journalist and blogger explains this better than I can and he also still has the video of the original interview (which was removed by RTE) so that you get the FULL picture.
