Some day-job problems and some other issues caused a big delay yesterday. I had planned to send this edition of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) many hours earlier, but as long as I have to divide my time between a paying day job and the (not-paying) Dublin Event Guide, I hope you are tolerant with my sending times.<\/p>\n

Facebook changed their algorithm again this week and it will lead to less of you getting to see the Facebook page updates as a regular feature in your Timeline. If you like the daily mini-reminders, just go to the Facebook page at http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DublinEventGuide<\/a> from a Desktop\/Laptop (not smartphone!) browser. Then click on the LIKED button just below the Cover Photo and select “Get Notifications”. If you do that, you will see the daily event updates on Facebook. It is a little annoying that Facebook constantly changes things, but they are a commercial company and will always try to increase their revenue.<\/p>\n

I have another busy Dublin Event Guide for you this week. Well, Dublin is busy and the number of evens included here only reflect that. The big change is that the evens start “kicking in” again after the long Christmas\/New Year break. This weekend we have the Temple Bar TrafFest and next weekend the Chinese New Year Festival. Outdoor events in January\/February. Luckily Dublin is never REALLY cold. ;-)<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

The big event this week is the first outdoor festival of the year: The Temple Bar TradFest has an indoor component as you can imagine, but this weekend there is a strong focus on outdoor activites as well. From outdoor stages to Ceili workshops, street performance, and a Craft Market, Temple Bar will be buzzing on Saturday and Sunday. If you have children check out The Ark as well.<\/p>\n

For the beer drinker among you, have a look at the Beerhouse Beerfest, there are some interesting features. The programme is not very detailed, but the discerning beer drinker will find something, I’d say.<\/p>\n

At the end of the week, the Chinese New Year Festival will start and there are already some events on Friday that might interest you. Have a look.<\/p>\n

Also consider the many many gigs that we always have in Dublin. There is a hugely vibrant music scene and you find all types of music performed for free every week.<\/p>\n

National Gallery of Ireland Exhibitions<\/h2>\n

The National Gallery is currently showing New Portraits (14 Dec – 09 Feb) and the yearly Turner exhibition in January “The Vaughan Bequest” (01-31 January).<\/p>\n

From next Saturday you will also be able to see “Care of the Collection” (18 Jan – 30 May), a presentation of three paintings that were preserved by the National Gallery. You will learn how the preservation methods have changed over the last 100 years.<\/p>\n

100 Years Ago – A Reflection on the 1913 Lockout – in Paintings and Sculpture<\/h2>\n

RADE (Recovery through Art, Drama, and Education) worked with several participants on the production of an art exhibit based on the 1913 Lockout. Over eight months, the artists immersed themselves in the stories and history of the Lockout. The participants, many of whom are not originally artists, created art for this historical event. From paintings to wood and plaster sculptures, a work of emotional response to the trials faced by working class people during the 1913 Lockout emerged.<\/p>\n

The 9th Temple Bar TradFest will run from Wed 22 Jan – Sun 26 Jan. Over 5 days and 5 nights a whole range of high-profile, headline events (not free) will take place and in addition there will more than 200 (!) free events on the music trail and the family programme.<\/p>\n

The Music Trail is a series of free concerts in the pubs of Temple Bar with well known bands and performers. Fureys, Bagatelle, Dublin Legends (former Dubliners), Dublin City Ramblers and Kilkennys are the bands and they perform in a total of 13 gigs. The Ark in Temple Bar always runs interesting events for children. But because they are usually not free, I don’t get a chance to mention them much here. However, for two previous Saturdays and this week on Sat+Sun they will show the “Secrets of Kells Exhibition” and admission is free. The exhibition is suitable for ages 4+. It contains limited edition art prints of scenes from The Secret of Kells, the animated feature film by Kilkenny\u2019s Cartoon Saloon.<\/p>\n

This weekend, Pipe makers and players from Na P\u00edobair\u00ed Uilleann will be in the exhibition space between 12:30 and 14:30 on Sat+Sun. Come and see how these intriguing native Irish instruments are made \u2013 starting from the surprising beginnings of just a few small pieces of wood.<\/p>\n

The 9th Temple Bar TradFest will run from Wed 22 Jan – Sun 26 Jan. Over 5 days and 5 nights a whole range of high-profile, headline events (not free) will take place and in addition there will more than 200 (!) free events on the music trail and the family programme.<\/p>\n

The Music Trail is a series of free concerts in the pubs of Temple Bar with well known bands and performers. Fureys, Bagatelle, Dublin Legends (former Dubliners), Dublin City Ramblers and Kilkennys are the bands and they perform in a total of 13 gigs. The Ark in Temple Bar always runs interesting events for children. But because they are usually not free, I don’t get a chance to mention them much here. However, for two previous Saturdays and this week on Sat+Sun they will show the “Secrets of Kells Exhibition” and admission is free. The exhibition is suitable for ages 4+. It contains limited edition art prints of scenes from The Secret of Kells, the animated feature film by Kilkenny\u2019s Cartoon Saloon.<\/p>\n

This weekend, Pipe makers and players from Na P\u00edobair\u00ed Uilleann will be in the exhibition space between 12:30 and 14:30 on Sat+Sun. Come and see how these intriguing native Irish instruments are made \u2013 starting from the surprising beginnings of just a few small pieces of wood.<\/p>\n

This year the Temple Bar Tradfest children\u2019s crafts club will take inspiration from The Battle of Clontarf and the Book of Kells. Travel back in time and try your hand at crafting a mini metal shield, make your own illuminated scroll using calligraphy and print techniques or become a High King or Queen for the day by making your own crown\/headpiece using a variety of materials. Rich Tea Biscuit
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who came up with this? If there was a price for the worst biscuit in the world, I think Rich Tea biscuits should get it and it puzzles me why they are so popular in the UK and in Ireland.<\/p>\n

When I was doing my military service in Germany, we occasionally got survival food rations and they contained a pack of biscuits that had a similar non-taste as Rich Tea Biscuits and it also was that hard. The army nickname for these survival pack biscuits (Their expiration date was 10 years or more away!) was “armoured plates” or “tank plates”, because they were as hard and as tasteless as you could only imagine steel\/armoured plates to be. Surprisingly I found a picture of them here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rich Tea Biscuits are as bad! And who came up with that misleading name? There is nothing “rich” about them!<\/p>\n

Mind you, I love biscuits. But do biscuits without chocolate even deserve the name “biscuits”? Not in my world. :-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
