Hi all!<\/p>\n

This is the Dublin Event Guide No. 344. That is 344 weeks of looking for free events since I started back in 2007. The first mail contained only one or two events. Today there are more than 150 in this Dublin Event Guide and we are only starting the year! I Know that some of you think this weekly e-mail magazine is much too long. But here is the important question: Do you want me to pre-select events for you? Do you really trust my music taste? (I wouldn’t if I were you!! ;-) ) Or my preferences about talks and lecture topics?<\/p>\n

The reason why the Dublin Event Guide is soo long is because there are so many high quality events and I don’t think I should tell you what you should like. I know some “curated” event publications and the people who write them have NO clue what I like, because every week they get it TOTALLY wrong.<\/p>\n

So if you don’t want me to select 30 out of the available 150 events for you, what is the solution? Because I know and totally agree that this e-mail magazine is EXTREMELY long.
\nIn my opinion, the solution is a modification of the way you read the Dublin Event Guide. Read it like a newspaper or a magazine, not like a book or …like an e-mail. It is a “magazine” in e-mail format, but not a normal e-mail. AN e-mail you read from top to bottom. But you would not do that with a newspaper or a magazine. In a newspaper we read the headlines and MAYBE the subtitle and if that grabs our attention we continue reading. With the Dublin Event Guide, you should read the headline and the day and time of the event. If all three still keep you interested, keep on reading. If not, then skip to the next event.<\/p>\n

It is – in my opinion – an amazing and outstanding event and I would suggest to everyone (who can afford it) to go to it, but it is not cheap, so you have to be quite determined about improving your life to make that investment. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. The second festival of the year takes place from Wednesday. It is the Temple Bar TradFest and there will be more (outdoor) events in the next Dublin Event Guide, but also this week there are some interesting gigs.<\/p>\n

But before we come to that festival, let’s have a look at this weekend: Grow your own…,, the current Science Gallery exhibition is coming to an end and will close its doors for ever on Sunday. If you haven’t seen it yet, you have only two days left! The next exhibition will open in early February in the Science Gallery, but Grow your own… will never come back.<\/p>\n

The monthly Sunday markets are back as well: The Brocante Furniture & Vintage Market is the first. If you interested in second-hand stylish furniture or like Vintage, then go to the Food Co-op for that market.<\/p>\n

And then I want to mention another event, that is a good bit more unusual: A Table Tennis Tournament in a pub! The Workman’s club will host the Battle of the Paddles. Earlier today they still had some slots left on Wednesday. I loved Table Tennis and was not toooo bad when I grew up. I would really like to play again, but a tournament is a step to far. Restricted Opening Hours: Phoenix Park Visitor Centre + Farmleigh House<\/h2>\n

The two OPW (Office of Public Works) properties in Phoenix Park, the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre and Farmleigh House are now announcing on their websites that they will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays at least until mid-March. Is that OPW’s attempt to reduce their cost? It is understandable to a degree, I am sure they were dealing with just a small number of people on these two days. But I hope normal service will resume when March\/April is here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Thomas Cook closure … and the consequences for all flight passengers from Ireland<\/h2>\n

On Wednesday it was announced that Thomas Cook, Ireland’s second largest tour operator, will close its offices and will only offer services via their website. “Bad news for people who are uncomfortable with Internet bookings or unable to use the Internet”, I thought. But I didn’t realise that there are other big consequences for Irish holiday makers.<\/p>\n

Reading a few articles<\/a> later I realised that Thomas Cook was not just closing their offices, but also decided to stop providing charter flights from Ireland. That means that you can still book a lastminute or other trip over the summer with Thomas Cook, but your charter flight will take off on a UK airport and you need to get there first. So all Thomas Cook holidays will most likely get more expensive for Irish customers.<\/p>\n

And because all Irish holiday makers will now have to fly with regular flights to their tour departure airport, it also means that the limited seats from Ireland will be filled faster, which will drive prices up even for people that are not intending to go on a Thomas Cook holiday.<\/p>\n

The Ark in Temple Bar always runs interesting events for children. But because they are usually not free, I don’t get a chance to mention them much here. However, for the next three Saturdays (and one Sunday) they will show the “Secrets of Kells Exhibition” and admission is free. The exhibition is suitable for ages 4+. It contains limited edition art prints of scenes from The Secret of Kells, the animated feature film by Kilkenny\u2019s Cartoon Saloon.<\/p>\n

There is also a screening of the animation “Moon Man” at 15:00, but there is an Admission charge of EUR 3 for that. Suitable for Age 7+<\/p>\n

This is the very last weekend for this exhibition:<\/p>\n

The current Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.<\/p>\n

This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.<\/p>\n

As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.<\/p>\n

“Everything must go now” is a 1-day event of tastes, sights and sounds. It is the closing event for Bubblewrap Game: Hugh Lane, part of the Sleepwalkers series with James Barry, Jeremy Deller, David Eager Maher, Padraic E. Moore, Kevin Powell, and Jim Ricks.<\/p>\n

For this event, Jim Ricks has curated a range of artists and practices that could not normally be shown in an ordinary exhibition. An entertaining selection of responses or micro-exhibitions will start on 18 Jan, culminating in a reception.<\/p>\n

An exclusive showing of new work specially produced for this show by Jeremy Deller will be up for the duration of the day situated in an unexpected place.<\/p>\n

Chef Kevin Powell, founder of Guerrilla Gruel, will produce a reduced, minimal 6 course banquet which will be available to the public all afternoon. It will be served on a correspondingly minimal \u2018long table\u2019 that will bisect the elegance of the Sculpture Hall.<\/p>\n

This is the very last weekend for this exhibition:<\/p>\n

The current Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.<\/p>\n

This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.<\/p>\n

As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.<\/p>\n

In the event series “Hidden treasures of the National Botanic Gardens”, the next event is entitled “Art collections in the Gardens”.<\/p>\n

Alexandra Caccamo will show examples of some of the many thousands of original paintings the Botanic Gardens own. As well as fabulous botanical art, there are also paintings from the jungles of Burma, the limestone pavements of the Burren and the Botnaic Gardens own glasshouses. These form an important scientific record of what was growing in the gardens over a century ago, as well as the importance of communicating botanical discoveries at the gardens to international journals.<\/p>\n

The 9th Temple Bar TradFest will run from Wed 22 Jan – Sun 26 Jan. Over 5 days and 5 nights a whole range of high-profile, headline events (not free) will take place and in addition there will more than 200 (!) free events on the music trail and the family programme.<\/p>\n

The Music Trail is a series of free concerts in the pubs of Temple Bar with well known bands and performers. Fureys, Bagatelle, Dublin Legends (former Dubliners), Dublin City Ramblers and Kilkennys are the bands and they perform in a total of 13 gigs. The details are here http:\/\/www.templebartrad.com\/irish-folk-legends\/<\/a> I am not sure, though how access works. The gigs are free, and you seemingly can’t pre-book tickets, so I assume it is first come, first served?<\/p>\n

The Family programme brings street performers, face painting, mobile farms, outdoor stages, live painting and much more to the streets of Temple Bar. Some required pre-booking, hence the listing of it for the last two weeks in the Upcoming events section in the Dublin Event Guide.<\/p>\n

I picked up a programme brochure a few weeks ago, but it doesn’t list the outdoor stage locations and doesn’t contain anything about the Family Programme, so I thought that the brochure is a bit useless. But then I realised that there is another one. The more interesting one is here http:\/\/www.templebartrad.com\/events\/events-programme\/<\/a> (Unfortunately in the issuu format, which I distinctly dislike, because it is unwieldy. It would be soo much easier if brochures could also be provided in PDF format.)<\/p>\n

“Creativity meets Technology” is the theme of Digital Biscuit, a 3-day event for creatives in film and TV production. Think “Directors, writers, photographers, producers, editors and directors of photography” and you can imagine a large proportion of the target group. There will be talks, an expo, workshops and the launch of the National Youth Film School. The spotlight is on the Danish Film and TV Industry.<\/p>\n

“Creativity meets Technology” is the theme of Digital Biscuit, a 3-day event for creatives in film and TV production. Think “Directors, writers, photographers, producers, editors and directors of photography” and you can imagine a large proportion of the target group. There will be talks, an expo, workshops and the launch of the National Youth Film School. The spotlight is on the Danish Film and TV Industry.<\/p>\n

A number of interesting talks will take place, but you need to buy a ticket (EUR 60 per day) for it. Fifteen workshops also take place (for the low fee of EUR 5).<\/p>\n

The free events in the 3-day programme are the “Kinoplay” Expo on 23+24 Jan and the launch of the National Youth Film School on 23 Jan at 13:00. Tickets are needed for the free events and you can get them in the TICKETS section on the website below.<\/p>\n

The 9th Temple Bar TradFest will run from Wed 22 Jan – Sun 26 Jan. Over 5 days and 5 nights a whole range of high-profile, headline events (not free) will take place and in addition there will more than 200 (!) free events on the music trail and the family programme.<\/p>\n

The Music Trail is a series of free concerts in the pubs of Temple Bar with well known bands and performers. Fureys, Bagatelle, Dublin Legends (former Dubliners), Dublin City Ramblers and Kilkennys are the bands and they perform in a total of 13 gigs. The details are here http:\/\/www.templebartrad.com\/irish-folk-legends\/<\/a> I am not sure, though how access works. The gigs are free, and you seemingly can’t pre-book tickets, so I assume it is first come, first served?<\/p>\n

The Family programme brings street performers, face painting, mobile farms, outdoor stages, live painting and much more to the streets of Temple Bar. Some required pre-booking, hence the listing of it for the last two weeks in the Upcoming events section in the Dublin Event Guide.<\/p>\n

I picked up a programme brochure a few weeks ago, but it doesn’t list the outdoor stage locations and doesn’t contain anything about the Family Programme, so I thought that the brochure is a bit useless. But then I realised that there is another one. The more interesting one is here http:\/\/www.templebartrad.com\/events\/events-programme\/<\/a> (Unfortunately in the issuu format, which I distinctly dislike, because it is unwieldy. Irish Scandals this week
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

This section is called “This is Odd!” and “odd” usually means a little different or unusual or surprising or as per Merriam-Webster dictionary definition “different from what is normal or expected”. So the word “odd” is absolutely not enough to describe the outrageous revelations that we heard about last week.<\/p>\n

It started with the news<\/a> that Irish Water will spend EUR 86mio in consultants. Of which more than 40mio is for IBM alone. I once was an IT consultant and I therefore know that the fees charged for consultants can be very very high. But let’s calculate one thing here: If we are super generous and allow for a daily rate of EUR 4k per person. We have 10,000 man days, so if IBM puts a whopping number of 100 people on this project, these hundred have to work for more than 3 months non-stop on it to justify that amount. 100 talented people working 100 days? That would definitely generate a LOT of hot air. But in this case it was not necessary to re-invent the wheel, the project is just the improvement and modernisation of a fresh water supply system. And nearly every other European country has a better working system, so there can’t really be a need for re-inventing anything.<\/p>\n

And then the other outrageous revelation<\/a> was the payments that the Central Remedial Clinic (CRC) in Clontarf, a “national centre for the care, treatment and development of children and adults with physical disabilities” (including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy and arthrogryposis.) EUR 700k were given to a former CEO as a retirement package. This is 542k more than the CRC admitted to last month, but it gets worse: To provide the former CEO with his nice little farewell gift, HALF of all the yearly donations to a charity that collects for the essential work of the CRC was plundered.<\/p>\n

Outrageous stuff! And do you think there will be anybody punished for these inexcusable events? Very unlikely!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
