There it is! Another Dublin Event Guide for another week. We are only 10 days away from Christmas now and the shopping streets and shopping centres are getting fuller and fuller. If you follow the daily Facebook Messages you read that I was on DublinCityFM on Friday, where Kelly and Andy wanted to know more about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and about me. Oh yes, I have to mention that again: Facebook has definitely stopped liking us. The REACH for the daily post has dropped right down, but if you want to get the daily mini-reminders you can make Facebook show them to you. Use your Desktop\/Laptop browser (doesn’t seem to work on a mobile browser) and click on the field that says LIKED at the top. (It was LIKE before you clicked on it to Like the Page and then it turns into LIKED.) Now you can tick “Get Notifications” and I hope that will help and will keep you informed again.<\/p>\n

And let me say a big thanks to Marisa, Nadine, Maria, Mireya, Hannes and Jack, who got together and sent me a lovely completely unexpected Christmas present. How sweet! Thanks guys, I appreciate hugely!<\/p>\n

Today I have a real story for you, a story that Ruth N told me. Ruth is volunteering in Scoil Aine Naofa in Lucan and teaching a 5th class how to sew and knit. One of the children in that class came to her and said “Wouldn’t it be great if we could make some things, sell them and give the money to the SVP charity so that children who are not going to get anything at Christmas could have something from them.”<\/p>\n

I think it’s great if children are not just focus on gettign the next Playstation or mobile phone or trendy clothes, but are prepared to think of others.<\/p>\n

And like the child who seems to be a doer who cares, Ruth is a doer! She called a friend and some other parents and they decided to take action. Everybody got involved and the idea grew and grew and now the whole school is involved. Children are knitting, sewing, making cards, bookmarks, decorative glass sugar jars, calendars, Christmas decorations and so on!!<\/p>\n

On Thursday they are now doing a Sale of Work and Fun Day from 10:00-15:30 and all money made will be given to the SVP charity in Lucan for Lucan families to benefit from.<\/p>\n

There will be craft stalls from local crafters, facepainting and a cake and coffee stall, as well as the children’s sale of work and their games and stalls. There will be a raffle and lucky dip and local businesses have donated prizes.<\/p>\n

Great grass roots initiative and look at the “snowball” that formed after one single girl made one single inspired suggestion.<\/p>\n

If you are in the area on Thursday or can get into the area, go to Scoil Aine Naofa and help by buying something!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This week I will have to let you find your own way to a large degree. I will be away for a few days to enjoy the Christmas Markets in Germany, but don’t worry, I will be back in time for the next Dublin Event Guide next week.<\/p>\n

Check out the Bord Bia Food Market today and give the Dockland’s Christmas Market a try. I definitely recommend the Christmas Cracker Market at Smithfield if you like Flea Markets. It is a big Flea and craft market with about 10 stalls.<\/p>\n

There is lots more to do, I know and if you have children, for example, then I am sure you already looked at the Farmleigh House programme.<\/p>\n

“Mirror, Mirror, Off The Wall” – Christmas Play – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

The Christmas Play ‘Mirror, Mirror, Off The Wall’ is a twist on the traditional Fairytale Christmas show. Redoing old classics to have strong female heroes at the centre: Red Riding Hood is well able to look after herself from the Wolf, Snow White makes sure she has her employment rights in place with the dwarves, and Sleeping Beauty is starting up a campaign against the excruciating boredom of ‘happily ever after’.<\/p>\n

The play is produced by Jill Thornton, written by Katie O’Kelly and performed by Katie O’Kelly and Clara Purcell.<\/p>\n

Snowballs at Dawn! – Christmas Jumper Conflict<\/h2>\n

The Irish company Zatori Results claims that Littlewoods stole their Christmas Jumper design and breached intellectual property when they sold a jumper that was almost identical to the Zatori jumper from 2012. Oddly, Zatori’s website doesn’t even indicate that they sell Christmas Jumpers.<\/p>\n

Have a look at a picture of the two jumpers here <\/a>They are really similar. Both are blue, have stars on it and both have a Snowman on it. Both snowmen even look like we all expect a snoman to look like. Almost identical? Yes, the snowmen are, the rest is completely different. But can a snowman breach intellectual property? Is there ANYTHING original about a snowman design in the first place?<\/p>\n

Last week I was writing about DARTS driving after midnights and Nitelink buses having extended schedules and now even this: Operation Open City is the successor to Operation Freeflow, which is an initiative from 08-24 December to reduce traffic problems by having Gardai standing at key junctions. But on top of that it has been decided that there will be a Garda presence on late night LUAS and Nitelink services. Sounds like a REALLY good idea! – Any chance to keep that servcie feature even after Christmas?<\/p>\n

When you are in town, have bought lots of things and still need more, it becomes very annoying if you have to carry all the bags full of shopping with you all the time. It is now fun to go to more shops when you already hardly fit in the door anymore.<\/p>\n

Here is the solution for that problem: “Shop ‘n Drop” is a Free (!) Bag Minding Service at too locations. You can either leave your bags next to Arnott’s Side Entrance in Upper Liffey Street or if you are on the South Side, there is a drop off point on the middle floor of Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre. The service is available from 21 Nov-30 Dec (but oddly it is closed on Tuesdays and Mondays you can only collect bags).<\/p>\n

And it gets better: You can collect the bags either that evening or you can even leave them until the next day (for example if you want to go out that evening when in town). And that service is completely free.<\/p>\n

And it gets even better: If you do not want to bring the bags home yourself, you can get An Port to deliver them to your home. If you hand them over before 18:00, they can get delivered to your home by 21:00 for a fee of EUR 10,00. Or you can choose Next Working Day delivery for just EUR 6,00.<\/p>\n

Every weekend in December a few craft stalls will set up in the courtyard at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre. Very euphemistically the event is officially called “Christmas Winter Wonderland”. Christmas gifts on sale will range from woodcrafted items, knitwear, table centres, candles, oils, to little ceramic cottages and small sculptures.<\/p>\n

Santa will appear each Sunday from 13:00-17:00 to meet the children and Storytelling for children will take place in the 16th century tower house beside the courtyard each Sunday at 13:30 and 15:00. The shows are 15 Dec: Christmas in Dublin with a Musical Flavour \/ 22 Dec: Snow White.
\nAnd a choir will be singing Christmas carols and songs every Sunday from 14:00.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival is with 8 years, the longest established Christmas Market in Dublin, but compare that to the oldest Christmas Market in Germany (in Nuremberg), which is running 374 years now! The Irish Markets are still just tiny babies and a lot of learning and growing up could still be done.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival will run from 12-23 Dec. It was in the past one of the better ones in layout and in the type of stalls\/traders there are, but every year the organisers fiddle around with it. Maybe one day they will hit gold. In previous years there was a nice atmosphere and there were even some crafts shops intermixed with soap, flashy T-shirt and plastic goods shops.<\/p>\n

11 food stalls and 27 shops stalls (only a small few you can call “craft”) are there this year, but it seems that the layout has been changed completely and the George’s Dock platform is used for a gig marquee this year, called “Festival Lounge”. Until 18:00 you are allowed in for free and some choirs will perform occassionally. In the evening, however, from 20:00-22:00, it will turn into a gig venue and tickets are EUR 8-10. VERY strange for a Christmas Market! So the jury is out about the market this year. We will know more next weekend.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.<\/p>\n

This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.<\/p>\n

As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.<\/p>\n

Every weekend in December a few craft stalls will set up in the courtyard at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre. Very euphemistically the event is officially called “Christmas Winter Wonderland”. Christmas gifts on sale will range from woodcrafted items, knitwear, table centres, candles, oils, to little ceramic cottages and small sculptures.<\/p>\n

Santa will appear each Sunday from 13:00-17:00 to meet the children and Storytelling for children will take place in the 16th century tower house beside the courtyard each Sunday at 13:30 and 15:00. The shows are 15 Dec: Christmas in Dublin with a Musical Flavour \/ 22 Dec: Snow White.

Each Saturday and Sunday before Christmas a few food stands are put in the upper courtyard of Dublin Castle and the whole event is euphemistically called “Traditional Festive Market”. The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival is with 8 years, the longest established Christmas Market in Dublin, but compare that to the oldest Christmas Market in Germany (in Nuremberg), which is running 374 years now! The Irish Markets are still just tiny babies and a lot of learning and growing up could still be done.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival will run from 12-23 Dec. It was in the past one of the better ones in layout and in the type of stalls\/traders there are, but every year the organisers fiddle around with it. Maybe one day they will hit gold. In previous years there was a nice atmosphere and there were even some crafts shops intermixed with soap, flashy T-shirt and plastic goods shops.<\/p>\n

11 food stalls and 27 shops stalls (only a small few you can call “craft”) are there this year, but it seems that the layout has been changed completely and the George’s Dock platform is used for a gig marquee this year, called “Festival Lounge”. Until 18:00 you are allowed in for free and some choirs will perform occassionally. In the evening, however, from 20:00-22:00, it will turn into a gig venue and tickets are EUR 8-10. VERY strange for a Christmas Market! So the jury is out about the market this year. We will know more next weekend.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.<\/p>\n

This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.<\/p>\n

As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is open Tuesday-Sunday. (Weekdays: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun: 12:00-18:00) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Paul G ay is a Kaleidoscope artist and he builds giant kaleidoscopes. Last year he had an exhibition in the Exchange and I was impressed by some of them. Sooo beautiful!<\/p>\n

If there was an opportunity to see his giant kaleidoscopes, I would definitely recommend that you go to it if you like pretty things and colours etc. But Paul lives somewhere in the west if I remember it right and the event on Sunday is only scheduled for 2 hours, so maybe it is something else? A workshop maybe?<\/p>\n

The Exchange is a great venue, but the people working there are all volunteers and the people organising the events are not the volunteers but people like you and me that “rent” the Exchange just for their event, The consequence is that a lot of essential information just gets lost unfortunately and if I don’t have that information I need to leave the events out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival is with 8 years, the longest established Christmas Market in Dublin, but compare that to the oldest Christmas Market in Germany (in Nuremberg), which is running 374 years now! The Irish Markets are still just tiny babies and a lot of learning and growing up could still be done.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival will run from 12-23 Dec. It was in the past one of the better ones in layout and in the type of stalls\/traders there are, but every year the organisers fiddle around with it. Maybe one day they will hit gold. In previous years there was a nice atmosphere and there were even some crafts shops intermixed with soap, flashy T-shirt and plastic goods shops.<\/p>\n

11 food stalls and 27 shops stalls (only a small few you can call “craft”) are there this year, but it seems that the layout has been changed completely and the George’s Dock platform is used for a gig marquee this year, called “Festival Lounge”. Until 18:00 you are allowed in for free and some choirs will perform occassionally. In the evening, however, from 20:00-22:00, it will turn into a gig venue and tickets are EUR 8-10. VERY strange for a Christmas Market! So the jury is out about the market this year. We will know more next weekend.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival is with 8 years, the longest established Christmas Market in Dublin, but compare that to the oldest Christmas Market in Germany (in Nuremberg), which is running 374 years now! The Irish Markets are still just tiny babies and a lot of learning and growing up could still be done.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival will run from 12-23 Dec. It was in the past one of the better ones in layout and in the type of stalls\/traders there are, but every year the organisers fiddle around with it. Maybe one day they will hit gold. In previous years there was a nice atmosphere and there were even some crafts shops intermixed with soap, flashy T-shirt and plastic goods shops.<\/p>\n

11 food stalls and 27 shops stalls (only a small few you can call “craft”) are there this year, but it seems that the layout has been changed completely and the George’s Dock platform is used for a gig marquee this year, called “Festival Lounge”. Until 18:00 you are allowed in for free and some choirs will perform occassionally. In the evening, however, from 20:00-22:00, it will turn into a gig venue and tickets are EUR 8-10. VERY strange for a Christmas Market! So the jury is out about the market this year. We will know more next weekend.<\/p>\n

A series of four concerts of songs based on the child ballad collection will take place. Man, Woman and Child is a research and performance project devised and co-ordinated by Michael Fortune featuring traditional singers. The project is based on The Child Ballad Collection: a collection of traditional songs gathered by the American collector Francis J Child in England and Scotland between 1882 and 1898. Many of the songs, or variants of them, are sung in the Irish tradition. Approximately fifty songs will be performed over four nights along with a comprehensive talk on Child Ballads in Ireland by singer Jerry O\u2019Reilly.<\/p>\n

The market is a row of 24 white plastic tents\/marquees down Dame Court with a few lights and a few pine branches for decoration. Yes, you get it: atmosphere is a problem. But the tents are relatively big so that stalls are of a nice size and there are some interesting traders. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The best about this market is that there will be a free concert every night on a stage in the street. A series of four concerts of songs based on the child ballad collection will take place. Man, Woman and Child is a research and performance project devised and co-ordinated by Michael Fortune featuring traditional singers. The project is based on The Child Ballad Collection: a collection of traditional songs gathered by the American collector Francis J Child in England and Scotland between 1882 and 1898. Many of the songs, or variants of them, are sung in the Irish tradition. Approximately fifty songs will be performed over four nights along with a comprehensive talk on Child Ballads in Ireland by singer Jerry O\u2019Reilly.<\/p>\n

The Dame District Christmas Market will take place every day from Fri 13 – Sun 22 Dec. The market is a row of 24 white plastic tents\/marquees down Dame Court with a few lights and a few pine branches for decoration. Yes, you get it: atmosphere is a problem. But the tents are relatively big so that stalls are of a nice size and there are some interesting traders. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The best about this market is that there will be a free concert every night on a stage in the street. The performers are Betty Swing Machine, Jupe, Created by Comets, Deco Green, Ciaran Brennan, Greg Clifford, Gypsy Rebel Rabble, The Daily Howl, The Cold Draw, Reverend JM’s Panic Worship, Robin James Hurt, Chocolate Orange, DEM FOOLS, Cronin, The Ground Will Shake, The FitzaFrenic, The Rattling Kind, Shawn Mullin, Redwoods, Jigsaw Jam, Crow Black Chicken, Featuring X, Interskalastic, The Song Room, Noisy Plug Sessions, Woman Who Rock,<\/p>\n

The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival is with 8 years, the longest established Christmas Market in Dublin, but compare that to the oldest Christmas Market in Germany (in Nuremberg), which is running 374 years now! The Irish Markets are still just tiny babies and a lot of learning and growing up could still be done.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Docklands Christmas Festival will run from 12-23 Dec. It was in the past one of the better ones in layout and in the type of stalls\/traders there are, but every year the organisers fiddle around with it. Maybe one day they will hit gold. In previous years there was a nice atmosphere and there were even some crafts shops intermixed with soap, flashy T-shirt and plastic goods shops.<\/p>\n

11 food stalls and 27 shops stalls (only a small few you can call “craft”) are there this year, but it seems that the layout has been changed completely and the George’s Dock platform is used for a gig marquee this year, called “Festival Lounge”. Until 18:00 you are allowed in for free and some choirs will perform occassionally. In the evening, however, from 20:00-22:00, it will turn into a gig venue and tickets are EUR 8-10. VERY strange for a Christmas Market! So the jury is out about the market this year. We will know more next weekend.<\/p>\n

The market will be open every day Mon-Fri 12:00-22:00 and Sat+Sun 10:00-22:00.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.<\/p>\n

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fake Christmas Markets!?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have to start this with a declaration: I LOVE Christmas Markets and “fake” Christmas Markets are are incredibly irritating and annoying to me. But when talking to people about their expectations, I find that the vast majority of people agrees with my expectations. From a proper Christmas Market, I expect: many crafts stalls in wooden huts, some food stalls, Christmas Trees, tasteful Christmas Decoration, Christmas Music, lights, a Christmas atmosphere. Plastic toys, soaps and cremes, stalls in white plastic marquees, beer tents, less than a handful of stands are all things that I do NOT expect.<\/p>\n

Why am I going on and on about it? Because it it totally misleading and false advertisement to call TWO (admittedly big) food outlets and not a single Craft stall and no Christmas atmosphere whatsoever, a “Christmas Wonderland” or even a “Traditional Continental Christmas Market”. It is also not ok to call four sweets stalls in the four corners of a BIG courtyard a “Festive Traditional Market”.<\/p>\n

My sad realisation is that 90% of the Christmas Markets in Dublin don’t deserve the name in the slightest and even worse, the organisers seemingly haven’t even made an effort!<\/p>\n

I can’t tell YOU what to do, but for me the consequence of this is that, I will not again go to the “Christmas Wonderland – Traditional Continental Christmas Market” at the RDS (go for the Circus or Funderland, but you will be seriously disappointed by the “Christmas Market”). I will also not go again to the “Festive Traditional Market” in Dublin Castle. I was told that the “Christmas Market” at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre is also disappointing, but didn’t see it myself. The market in Christ Church is atmospheric (because it is in the crypt), but it is a “Market at Christmas”, not necessarily a “Christmas Market”.<\/p>\n

And the one at George’s Dock? Well, the jury is out. Send me your opinions and I will mention it on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page.<\/p>\n

Ok, ok, I will stop ranting now! :-) But you get my drift, right? Enjoy the markets, but don’t expect to experience anything that is even close to a Christmas Market. I am STILL hoping that one day one of the Christmas Market organisers will check out a real Christmas Market and then just copy that here. …and I will keep that hope alive year after year!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
