So start early and pray a lot. :-)

Speaking of “good times” can I say a special Hi! and a huge Thanks! to all the people that came to our Alternative Valentine’s Day Party/Meet-up in The Lotts Café Bar last Saturday? It was a huge success, if I may say so myself. ;-) Nearly 100 (!!) Dublin Event Guide Community Members came and everybody had a great time. The venue was perfect and Frank, the manager of The Lotts Café Bar (www.thelottscafebar.com), even had some canapés for us to taste the culinary delights available in The Lotts. Coincidentally a Jameson promotion in The Lotts that night meant that there were some free Jameson Whiskey’s going around as well. :-) I had hoped for around 30 people to come and we were more than three times as many – so I am definitely impressed. I think/hope I was talking to everybody on that evening even if it was just a brief chat with some and my voice was gone at the end of the evening, but it was great to meet so many of you in person! The opinion all around was that we should meet more frequently and we will definitely do that! So the next meeting will be in approx 2 months. If you want to see a few pictures, you can find them here http://picasaweb.google.com/dublineventguide/DublinEventGuideMeetingFeb09#. And another interesting fact: A quick count of all the nationalities that were represented arrived at the amazing number of 15!! :-)

If you are reading this Event Guide for a while, you will remember that I had mentioned before, that at some point I will have to include a LIMITED amount of advertisement. Writing this newsletter currently takes about 12 hours every Thursday night and that doesn’t include the many hours collecting events, exchanging e-mails with Event Organisers and with you, doing the competitions and the manual adding of new subscribers to the distribution list. I enjoy it and like with every hobby, I am not complaining at all, but in addition to covering the cost for sending (I have to use a commercial e-mail sender to limit the Spam classification problems I would encounter otherwise.) and some other Internet related cost, it would be great if I could invest some money in equipment that would help me to do the work in an easier way (I am looking at a Netbook at the moment: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=428224) AND eventually to provide a well-designed website as well that enhances the way I can provide all this information to readers.
So, the new “thing” is a bit of advertisement in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, however, I promise that it will be a very limited amount and that it I will never let it to interfere too much with your enjoyment of this newsletter. If you have an issue with a little bit of advertisement sprinkled in, let me know and – in that case – please make some suggestions how else I can raise some needed funds. ;-)
Please spend some time to look at the advertisement (this week in the “Joerg’s Picks” section) and if you would like to advertise in the Event Guide, just send me a mail: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

[ad]
—–
A big thanks to Ciara D who sent me a donation this week. Every donation is hugely appreciated and I am looking forward to YOURS! ;-) (And if I get enough donations, I could even leave advertisement out completely!!)

And please read this: This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E, Cliodhna D, Brian L, Padraig S, Kathie S, Orla niF, Jef B, Susanna N, Kate C, Nicola J, Claus Sch, Gordon S, Jeanne M, Fiona O’C, Marta M, Angela C, Isabelle F, Saundra S, Meisoon N, Ruth F, Valerie McN, Estelle O, Aoife M, Mairin M, Fionán O’L, Maeve L, Blaithin O’D, Ciara D, www.stickyfingerstravel.com (The travel guide for parents travelling with their children.), www.target2020.com (…a training company that focuses on personal and career development.), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, located at 6 Merrion Square, which supports contemporary Irish artists.) and www.a1computers.ie in Cabinteely (…who repair computers, printers and sort out Internet problems fast and who sell computers, laptops and low priced printer cartridges). Going to free events saves you a LOT of money. True? ;-) Knowing about these free events is essential, so that you then can decide if you want to go or not. True? This is at least worth 1 Euro per month, which is just 25 cent per newsletter!? Do you agree? Can I count on your 12 Euro per year? Feel free to give more if you can, but please do seriously consider the 12 Euro.
To contribute go to “http ://url . ie/v6z” and just remove the three Spaces in the web address (I have to write it like this, otherwise Spam Checkers complain about the url .ie address.) you then can donate using PayPal or your credit card!
Alternatively you can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation. This Event Guide is a hobby project and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do need donations!

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______________________________
______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

—-Advertisement————————————-
Beautiful top floor apartment in Chapelizod for sale!
Due to overseas move of Dublin Event Guide Community Member a spacious and bright 1-bedroom + study apartment will be available for sale. If you have never heard of it, I will tell you a bit more about it in the weeks to come and if Chris Howard is running another course in Ireland. But this course means that I will not be able to attend any other events this weekend.

If I were around, I would definitely go to the Flea Market on Sunday, Next week I would like to go to the “Eine heikle Sache” Theatre on Monday, the Instituto Cervantes Film Screening on Wednesday and the EYP Launch on Thursday, but I have some doubts that I will be able to.

______________________________
______Competition______________

CELEBR8 ARAMBE @5
The people from Arambe Productions, an Irish/African theatre company, are organising a concert that sounds very very interesting and to let you know about it – hopefully many will come to the concert – they are making a pair of tickets available to the readers of this newsletter.
“An Evening party of intercultural music” is the description and contributors are the 7-piece traditional group De Jimbe and a number of solo acts on the Irish circuit, including renowned Irish whistle player Cormac Breathnach, flautist Emer Mayock and singer Donna Anita Nikolaisen, better known when performing as Little Bird Song. Expect brilliant performances from a long list of performers!
The event is taking place this Saturday, 21 Feb 09 from 19:30 in the O’Reilly Theatre in Belvedere College, 6 Great Denmark St, Dublin 1. Tickets are EUR 18/EUR 15 and will be available at the door or from www.centralticketbureau.com.
And if you are looking for more information you can find it here http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=65688720567
If you want to win the pair of tickets that Arambe has made available for this competition, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “Arambe” in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Because the event is already this Saturday (tomorrow!!), the mail has to be with me by 17:00 TODAY (Friday). You will then hear from me before 21:00 if you won the pair of tickets. Please only enter this competition if you have time to go to the event tomorrow evening.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______________________________
______Dublin News______________

TURMOIL IN THE RECORD WORLD
Music and DVD retailers in Ireland are in some trouble and the end result is not predictable. This week it was announced (http://www.rte.ie/business/2009/0218/zavvi.html)
that Zavvi, the former Virgin Megastore, a UK music and DVD retailer that only recently had opened a new shop in Dundrum, is now completely finished. Another 18 UK stores will close and 13 will be be sold. In Ireland, the Zavvi branch in Blanchardstown closed in Jan and another 5 of its 11 stores in Ireland were sold to HMV. The 110 workers at the stores in Dundalk, Dundrum, Liffey Valley, Limerick and Newbridge were transfered to HMV. The company went into administration because it was affected by the collapse of Woolworths’ Entertainment UK wholesaling division.
Five days earlier it was announced (http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0213/goldendiscs.html)
that an examiner has been appointed for Golden Disc, which has 20 stores around Ireland. The group is insolvent and needs to close the loss-making stores to have a chance of survival.
And in January it was announced that Road Records, on Fade Street Dublin, is to close within the next two to three weeks. As an independent record store in Dublin, Road Records continually supported unestablished Irish artists, but dropping sales were cited as reason for the closure. http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/ontherecord/2009/01/16/state-goes-online-only-and-dublins-road-records-shuts-up-shop In most recent news, however, it seems that a group of members of the Irish Music industry were trying to save Road Records. (http://www.irishtimes.com/theticket/articles/2009/0213/1233867934175.html).
So lots happening in this sector and while it all happens in parallel to all other recession disaster announcements, it seems that at least a big share of the problems in all three cases are not direct results of the economic crisis, but maybe just sign of the times?

PUB + RESTAURANT NEWS
Another closure! AYA, the Japanese Sushi Restaurant behind Brown&Thomas, has closed. With a looong history and many years of successful operation, it is a surprise that now the economy is used as an explanation for the closure (well, they say that it is “partially” due to economic circumstances). But if such an established restaurant like Aya closes from one day to the next, you do have to wonder if the economic situation might be the main reason. Aya has an 11 year history and it would surprise me if the owners hadn’t weathered bigger storms before.

SEEKING COUPLES FOR NEW TV PROGRAMME
For a TV programme people who came to Ireland to work here and met their current partner in Ireland are needed. The couples should not be of the same nationality and should not be from Ireland. They will be asked to tell their story; cultural backgrounds, etc. For more information ring 01-4250245 or contact cleonanic@gmail.com

———Opportunities—————–

A few weeks ago I suggested/invited everybody on the distribution list who has recently started a company – out of need or because they saw this great opportunity -, to send me some information about their venture and I promised to let everybody in the Dublin Event Guide Community know. I got a good few replies and am still open to receive more. Initially I had planned to list all of these business ideas here together, but to keep the size of the newsletter a little under control, I will now distribute them over a few weeks.

SHEILA’S CHILDMINDING
Sheila Keegan offers a childminding service in the Wicklow area, which also offers Wedding Weekends, overnights for a reasonable cost. I also provide traditional childminding both full and part-time.” You can contact Sheila on 087-2898354, and please mention the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events if you talk to her. They got married in Camogli at the Ligurian Riviera and with their experience from their own wedding and with their Italian and French backgrounds they definitely know what they are talking about when it comes to the planning of a romantic wedding. Maybe you always had planned to get married in Italy or France or maybe events on recent Valentine’s Day have catapulted you firmly in the wedding planning process and you could so with some help and advise? Either way, have a look at http://www.rivieraweddingsonline.com/ and contact Melanie and Gianluca through the website. By the way, the website is in the middle of a big improvement process, so visit it a few times over the coming days and weeks.

Next week I will describe two more opportunities that Event Guide readers saw to fight against recession and doom&gloom. Support the small start-up companies if you can!

______________________________
______Exhibitions_______________

SEÁN SHANAHAN – KERLIN GALLERY
‘AS if’, an exhibition of new paintings by Seán Shanahan will be on show in the Kerlin Gallery from 20 Feb – 21 Mar. PATRICK’S DAY FESTIVAL
The St. Patrick’s Day Festival website and was launched (with some hiccups) yesterday and the programme was announced for this year. The two surprises for me are a) the Fireworks Display is still not back in Dublin, it will be in Waterford and b) the HUGELY popular Ceili Mor has been cancelled completely. The Denny’s Big Day Out at Merrion Square will take place again and that was a great event last year. In addition there will be a performance on Grand Canal Square and this is the areason why I am already writing about the St. Patrick’s Festival. Co-presented by St Patrick’s Festival and the Docklands Authority “The Spheres” is a unique spectacle performance which has broad family appeal. Creation, exultation, liberation, life, the universe and everything. The show takes a whimsical look at physics, the miracle of birth and humanity’s existential relationship to our planet. Performed by Strange Fruit a Melbourne-based performing arts company that produces and performs a remarkable style of work that fuses theatre, dance and circus, using a unique elevated medium. Perched atop 4 metre high flexible poles of original design, the troupe delivers a sublime performance, bending and swaying in the air, captivating and engaging the audience in absolute fascination.
The performance will take place on Fri 13 March at 18:30 and at 20:00 and on Sat 14 March at 18:30 and 20:00 on Grand Canal Square, Docklands, Dublin 1. The story is quite hilarious and you better read it here
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7899171.stm?lss before I ruin it by transcribing it. :-) But if you are Polish and you have seen Mr. Prawo Jazdy, the Garda Siochana might give you a reward. :-P

—————–
I am off to three long days of an inspiring seminar again this week, so I will be all energised again by Sunday evening. :-)

Enjoy the weekend!

–Joerg

*********************************************
For donations please copy the following line in the address line of your browser and then delete the three spaces in the line (left and right of the dot and after http). It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) and if you want to help me with the running of it (no minimum amount!) just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Donation” in the subject and I will reply with a link that will allow you to make your donation by PayPal or per credit card or follow the link just above this section. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you find in pubs and other venues.
Copyright 2009 by Joerg Steegmueller.
***********************************************

——————————————————————— | DUBLIN EVENT GUIDE (for Free Events) No. 88 | 20 Feb 2009 Subscribers: 3443 ——————————————————————— Hi all!
