The coming weekend and week is dominated by Halloween! Ghosts and Draculas and “blood” everywhere. The Bram Stoker Festival comes with lots of interesting events and the interest is so huge that most of them have been booked out for long. But before we come to Halloween we will enjoy a 3-day weekend first. (Don’t forget to change your clocks on Saturday night. Enjoy that extra hour sleep. The clock will go one hour BACK.) This is the last bank holiday before Christmas so make the most of it. And if there are any marathon runners among the Dublin Event Guide readers: We are all behind you! This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

This weekend, I would suggest to start with the Vampire Hunt, a treasure hunt through a different type of Dublin. The Bram Stoker Festival comes with a number of free events despite the fact that many of the really good events are long booked out. If you have children and you didn’t get the wristband for the Huanted Forest in Marley Park, today is the very last chance for that. (Check the details in the Upcoming Events section).<\/p>\n

The Ideal Homes Exhibition is also an option on Saturday and you will find me there, at least for a short while. For beer enthusiasts, the Homebrew Festival in the Bernard Shaw is a definite MUST.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the Dublin Flea Market takes place again. For kids there are a number of Halloween related events and at 18:00 the Raise your Spirits parade. For the grown ups the Workman’s Club Oktober Bank Holiday Monday event is looking good.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the Marathon monopolises everything. ;-) Go on, cheer the 14,000 runners on and afterwards you can claim that you were part of it. ;-)<\/p>\n

The Quarteto Olinda from the Pernambuco region in Brazil are following the long tradition of musicians blending regional styles with modern approaches. Their musical style – forr\u00f3 de rabeca – was created in the sugarcane-growing rural areas around the city of Recife. It is led by the sound of “rabeca” – the Brazilian folk fiddle – and the drumbeat of Zabumba.
\nTheir fiery weekly residency in the historic city of Olinda trained them to perform long, hectic sets and sed uced so many music fans worldwide that some Dubliners, having lost their minds at one of those crazy forr\u00f3 nights, decided to bring them over.<\/p>\n

The night in the Grand Social will take you on a trip around Pernambuco, filled with music, cinema and food. Anne Frank & You – An exhibition<\/h2>\n

“Anne Frank & You” is an exhibition based on \u2018The Diary of A Young Girl’. It will run from 23 Oct – 11 December in the Dublin City Library and Archive, 138-144 Pearse Street, Dublin 2 and will be open during library opening hours. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The exhibition tells the story of a young Jewish girl and her family hiding in occupied Amsterdam during World War II. Starting from Anne Frank\u2019s writings and experiences, the exhibition is a journey of self exploration for the visitor. Themes that Anne wrote about in her diary, such as racial hatred, war and conflict and the value of democracy and freedom, are presented in an up to date and contemporary fashion, along with filmed interviews with young people discussing their own views, concerns and hopes for the future.<\/p>\n

At the heart of the exhibition is an almost life size replica of Anne\u2019s bedroom in the secret annexe. There is also an accompanying film called \u201cThe Short Life of Anne Frank\u201d and an opportunity to sign the world famous Anne Frank Declaration.<\/p>\n

This exhibition is free and is suitable for adults and children from 6th class and up.<\/p>\n

Openening hours are: Mon-Thurs 14:30-20:00, Fri 14:30-17:00, Sat 10:00-17:00. Closed Bank Holiday 26-28 October 2013<\/p>\n

Bram Stoker Festival<\/h2>\n

The Bram Stoker Festival takes place this week. Lots of events (32!) are on the events list, but a good few required pre-registration (that’s why I mentioned the event in the upcoming events last week) and are booked out and a few others are not free. The ones that are free and are still available are listed in this Dublin Event Guide.<\/p>\n

A really interesting event is taking place at Dublin Castle. “Dracula’s Fire Garden” would probably appeal to nearly every child in Ireland, but it is long booked out. The website is here http:\/\/www.bramstokerfestival.com\/events\/ <\/a>and you can find all events there.
\nIf you like Treasure Hunts, check the Vampire Hunt out on Saturday. Bring friends (or family) and explore Dublin’s ghostly side. The treasure hunt is very much suitable for children as well!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Ryanair Customer SERVICE?<\/h2>\n

In a surprising move towards at least a token Customer SERVICE, Ryanair has launched a webform where customers can tell Michael O’Leary their customer service suggestions. The funny thing is that Ryanair seemingly said<\/a> that “this new webform is the latest in a series of initiatives by Ryanair to further improve its industry leading customer service”. Are they serious? Industry leading customer service? I guess it is all a question of perspective, if you are the very last and you look “the wrong way”, the last could appear to be the leader. Either that or clear delusion!<\/p>\n

UCD Centre for Science is hosting the CERN travelling exhibition “Mission Higgs” as part of the month-long celebrations for the opening of the this new science building.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the Higgs boson last year was one of mankind’s most important scientific achievement both in terms of our understanding of the universe, and the worldwide theoretical, experimental, and political collaboration that made it happen. CERN provides extensive outreach on its activities, through their web, museums in Geneva, tours of its facilities and the travelling exhibition. The exhibition presents an overview of CERN and its flagship project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), through a combination of large graphic panels, on-screen displays and videos.<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.<\/p>\n

This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.<\/p>\n

I was at the Science Gallery for the media preview and the launch event (for all Science Gallery members) and I found it so interesting that I will be back again. As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.<\/p>\n

The 4th Halloween Festival of Gothic Horrors takes place throughout November and starts this weekend. The Festival celebrates the Gothic horror genre in literature, film, theatre and other art forms, placing a special focus on the literary works of Charles Maturin, Sheridan Le Fanu, Bram Stoker and other Dublin-born authors writing in the horror genre.<\/p>\n

On Sat 26 Oct there will be a literary reading of a short story by Sheridan LeFanu, a leading writer in the Gothic literary genre, at around 14:00 (exact time tbc) in the Exchange Arts Centre in Temple Bar.(Check the Facebook Page for an update.)<\/p>\n

The newest Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.<\/p>\n

This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.<\/p>\n

I was at the Science Gallery for the media preview and the launch event (for all Science Gallery members) and I found it so interesting that I will be back again. As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is open Tuesday-Sunday. (Weekdays: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun: 12:00-18:00) Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. They will be creating a large scale 3-paneled Triptych, created from found objects and salvage yard gems. Measuring approx. 3 metres x 3 metres, 3 of Dublin’s illustrators will spend the evening under flood lights creating a complex art piece in the back yard of the Bernard Shaw. The Dame District (roughly between Sth Great George’s Street and South William Street) will host over 30 events over the weekend in 10 venues in the context of “Raise Your Spirits”, a cross-cultured free event celebrating everything festive about Halloween. Everything from fortune tellers, live music, zombie dress up zone, historic ghost tours, wax museum characters, cabaret and burlesque.<\/p>\n

Sounds all really good, but unfortunately the people from “Raise your Spirit” didn’t seem to tell us what the 30 events are. I wasn’t able to find a straight forward list. Maybe it was just me not looking properly?<\/p>\n

The 20 participating venues are: Bankers, 4 Dame Lane, Sweeneys, The Stags Head, The Mercantile, The Dame Tavern, Odessa, The Globe, Exchequer, Sam\u2019s Barbers.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Marathon 2013 takes place on Bank Holiday Monday. It will be the 34th year of this event, which winds its way for 42km through many parts of Dublin and the Phoenix Park. More than 14,000 participants will run, jog, walk, limp or crawl through our city. Registration is long closed, but you can cheer on the runners. Start is in Fitzwilliam Street and finish on Merrion Square North. The race starts at 09:00 and the last participant will be back around 17:00. Airtricity is the main sponsor this year.<\/p>\n

UCD Centre for Science is hosting the CERN travelling exhibition “Mission Higgs” as part of the month-long celebrations for the opening of the this new science building.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the Higgs boson last year was one of mankind’s most important scientific achievement both in terms of our understanding of the universe, and the worldwide theoretical, experimental, and political collaboration that made it happen. CERN provides extensive outreach on its activities, through their web, museums in Geneva, tours of its facilities and the travelling exhibition. The exhibition presents an overview of CERN and its flagship project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), through a combination of large graphic panels, on-screen displays and videos.<\/p>\n

Shane is an Assistant Professor in Physics and CRANN at Trinity College Dublin. He\u2019s a nano-scientist, a Science Gallery Leonardo, and the founder of DART of Physics. Aoife is a Professor of Genetics at Trinity College Dublin. Her research focuses on molecular evolution, and she is a regular on television and radio in the UK and Ireland.<\/p>\n

UCD Centre for Science is hosting the CERN travelling exhibition “Mission Higgs” as part of the month-long celebrations for the opening of the this new science building.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the Higgs boson last year was one of mankind’s most important scientific achievement both in terms of our understanding of the universe, and the worldwide theoretical, experimental, and political collaboration that made it happen. CERN provides extensive outreach on its activities, through their web, museums in Geneva, tours of its facilities and the travelling exhibition. The exhibition presents an overview of CERN and its flagship project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), through a combination of large graphic panels, on-screen displays and videos.<\/p>\n

The UCD Science Expression Film Festival is a dedicated science film festival. A dynamic public engagement programme invigorating conversation around science, technology, research and innovation through film and new media. UCD Centre for Science is hosting the CERN travelling exhibition “Mission Higgs” as part of the month-long celebrations for the opening of the this new science building.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the Higgs boson last year was one of mankind’s most important scientific achievement both in terms of our understanding of the universe, and the worldwide theoretical, experimental, and political collaboration that made it happen. CERN provides extensive outreach on its activities, through their web, museums in Geneva, tours of its facilities and the travelling exhibition. The exhibition presents an overview of CERN and its flagship project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), through a combination of large graphic panels, on-screen displays and videos.<\/p>\n

The exhibition was meant to run from 09-28 Oct, but has been extended slightly. Admission is free. The remaining days are:<\/p>\n

The UCD Science Expression Film Festival is a dedicated science film festival. A dynamic public engagement programme invigorating conversation around science, technology, research and innovation through film and new media. DLR Events invites all kids with their parents to the Samhain\/Halloween event “The Haunted Forest Walk” in Marlay Park.<\/p>\n

There will be spooky thrills, chills and frights and the forest at Marlay Park will be alive with freaky fog, ghastly spiders and dragons, creepy eyeballs and pumpkins, spine chilling skeletons and menacing witches and wizards.<\/p>\n

The walk is approx 1.5km long on a path suitable for buggies\/wheelchairs. Come in your Halloween costumes but remember that it is an outdoor event, so warm clothing is recommended. (There will be no Fireworks display at this event.) Admission is free between 15:30 and 20:30 but a wristband is requireds and wristbands will NOT be available on the day of the event.<\/p>\n

Instead, wristbands can be collected at the DLR Coco Market in Marlay Park on Sat 19 October & Sat 26 Oct from 11:00 each day. Wristbands will be available while stocks last on a strictly first come, first served basis, limited to six per family. Entry times to queue for the Haunted Walk printed on your Wristband will be 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30 and 19:30. Parking in the College Road Car Park is very limited, so use public transport as much as possible.<\/p>\n

Kidnapped by the State<\/strong><\/p>\n

I find it very disturbing that the police can just take children away from their parents. When I was a child I had blond, nearly white hair. Both my parents had dark\/black hair. Based on what happened last week, I could have taken away from my parents by the police. Or have you seen this picture<\/a> of Rosanna Davison standing next to her dad, Chris de Burgh? That’s his daughter? No way!<\/p>\n

So, what happened when two children were last week taken away from their parents by the gardai? Three things happened: 1) In a different country (Greece) a highly publicised case of probably child abduction had happened and a Roma family was implicated. The child that they claimed was their’s is definitely not their own child and the police is currently trying to find the biological parents of the child. 2) Another Roma family in Tallaght had a blond 7 year old child<\/a> with blue eyes, which didn’t “fit in”. I am not sure if in the Tallaght case it was the gardai or a neighbour who became “suspicious”. At this point, we can all understand that there might be a need to establish some facts. But I have doubts that the knowledge of genetics in the gardai is big enough to draw final conclusions. 3) The third thing that happened is the biggest problem: Profiling! Based on social or racial triggers we do that MUCH to easily.<\/p>\n

Imagine a situation where your wallet is stolen from your jacket in a pub. There are three very well dressed men in the room and three quite disshevelled looking guys. Who would most us suspect first? Most would expect that one of the disshevelled guys took the wallet. Why? Because we have prejudices in our mind. We ALL have certain prejudices.<\/p>\n

In the case of the girl in Tallaght, it was racial profiling. Red-haired freckled Johnny around the corner, who’s parents’ both have black hair is still at home nad there is no risk he would ever be removed from his parents.<\/p>\n

Because it was based on racial profiling, we have huge problem if we are affected (Irish in London a few decades ago!?), but we can live with it if it doesn’t affect us.<\/p>\n

I am intentionally not condemning anybody here because the whole scanrio is too complex: If it had turned out that the girl was abducted, the gardai would have been heroes. So we don’t want to stop them from being alert. But we have to open our eyes to what and why things happen and we have to stop profiling from happening without any other substantial proof.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
