Hi all!<\/p>\n

Another super super late delivery of this week’s edition. But this week I know EXACTLY what went wrong! I start on a Thursday evening and then work through the night (no sleep) until all is done. For some reason I was NOT able to kep my eyes open this week. I fell asleep sitting at my desk during the night and consequently it took many hours more to finish all. Apologies! I think I will need to use matchsticks to keep my eyes open. I will try that next week. :-P<\/p>\n

Thanks for all your donations last week, I appreciate that a few people stepped up and were prepared to help immediately when it looked as if there was a danger that a hole developped in the “collection box”. I need approximately 14 donations of EUR 12 per month. That is about 2.5 donations per week. If everybody was prepared to help, we would only need a bit more than ONE Euro from each person PER YEAR! And there would even be money left over to do some improvements! But that will remain a dream. I think.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. I have to admit that this week, I find it relatively challenging to recommend a MUST GO event. There are lots of little things taking place, but no headline event at all. We will have that a number of times in the coming week and in that case I sometimes suggest that you go “back to basics”. Museums if the weather is bad. Temple Bar Food Market and Designer Mart and some of the other markets that always take place. In the evening, check out the regulars: Comedy Crunch, Saucy Sunday, Sunday Roast, etc. The reason why they are in operation for many many years is because they work and are popular. When lots of new things happen we easily get distracted from them, now it is time to show them our love again. ;-)<\/p>\n

\nUCD Science Expression is Ireland’s only dedicated science film festival. There are admission fees for some of the films, but others are free and I expect that the tickets will go like hot cakes. The festival is still two weeks away, but don’t wait. Get your tickets now before they are all gone. Dine in Dublin<\/h2>\n

Dine in Dublin takes place twice every year. It is a week long food festival (21-27 Oct) where top restaurants in the City Centre offer giveaways, special events, special dishes and special offers. There will be demonstrations, competitions, wine tastings, a Pop-Up Theatre performance, live msuic performances, a cocktail masterclass and a mini-Oktoberfest. It doesn’t list the special events yet, as far as I could see, but maybe that will be added before Monday?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Children’s Book Festival<\/h2>\n
\n

For the whole month of October the 23rd CBI Children’s Book Festival will take place. Libraries, schools and bookshops across the country will host events with Irish and international children\u2019s writers and illustrators. The 2012 festival reached more than 50,000 young readers across Ireland through more than 1,000.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s international authors Conrad Mason (The Demon\u2019s Watch), Joseph Delaney (the Spooks series) and Andrew Lane (Young Sherlock Holmes series) will come to Ireland and together with Irish authors and illustrators including Alan Early (Father of Lies Chronicles), Brian Gallagher (Across the Divide) and Claire Hennessy (Dear Diary) they will be meeting children at theatres, arts venues and libraries nationwide.<\/p>\n

An art exhibition with paintings by local artists is taking place every Sunday in the Church of Gardian Angel in Newtownpark Avenue in Blackrock, Money is needed for the church roof fund and the sale of the pictures will help with that.<\/p>\n

The exhibition takes place in the Coffee Dock, which is attached to the church and is open every Sunday. Every four weeks there will be different artists showing their work. In December the artists will get together to display a selection of their work for the Christmas period. Prices are very realistic and start from EUR 65.<\/p>\n

Help conserving the habitat by collecting the berries. The bush is thorny, so bring gloves and secateurs.

UCD Centre for Science is hosting the CERN travelling exhibition “Mission Higgs” as part of the month-long celebrations for the opening of the this new science building.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the Higgs boson last year was one of mankind’s most important scientific achievement both in terms of our understanding of the universe, and the worldwide theoretical, experimental, and political collaboration that made it happen. CERN provides extensive outreach on its activities, through their web, museums in Geneva, tours of its facilities and the travelling exhibition. The exhibition presents an overview of CERN and its flagship project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), through a combination of large graphic panels, on-screen displays and videos.<\/p>\n

Admission is free from 09:00-21:00 weekdays from 09 Oct-28 Oct. Everyone is welcome to come and take a self-guided tour. If you would like a guided tour of the exhibition with a physicist, please send an email to physics@ucd.ie or phone 01-7162361 to arrange a time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The “8×8 Documentary Film Festival” will take place from 21-25 October in DCU.<\/p>\n

This new festival is organised by Suas Educational Development together with loval organisations at the universities. Suas Educational Development tackles educational disadvantage in India, Kenya and Ireland<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The week-long festival on each campus will screen documentaries on a range of development issues and includes films that have already featured at major international film festivals in the last year and been nominated for awards. In addition to film screenings, there will be workshops hosted by visiting directors and producers and panel discussions on the issues explored in the films.<\/p>\n

UCD Centre for Science is hosting the CERN travelling exhibition “Mission Higgs” as part of the month-long celebrations for the opening of the this new science building.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the Higgs boson last year was one of mankind’s most important scientific achievement both in terms of our understanding of the universe, and the worldwide theoretical, experimental, and political collaboration that made it happen. CERN provides extensive outreach on its activities, through their web, museums in Geneva, tours of its facilities and the travelling exhibition. The exhibition presents an overview of CERN and its flagship project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), through a combination of large graphic panels, on-screen displays and videos.<\/p>\n

The “8×8 Documentary Film Festival” will take place from 21-25 October in DCU.<\/p>\n

This new festival is organised by Suas Educational Development together with loval organisations at the universities. Suas Educational Development tackles educational disadvantage in India, Kenya and Ireland<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The week-long festival on each campus will screen documentaries on a range of development issues and includes films that have already featured at major international film festivals in the last year and been nominated for awards. CERN provides extensive outreach on its activities, through their web, museums in Geneva, tours of its facilities and the travelling exhibition. The exhibition presents an overview of CERN and its flagship project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), through a combination of large graphic panels, on-screen displays and videos.<\/p>\n

Hope for Ireland is a vision of a Pastor Aaron Bagwell and is made up of a group of pastors from all over Ireland. Hope For Ireland is an event that will begin on 20 October to reach the city of Dublin and surrounding areas. The organisers say: “We are striving to bring hope to hopelessness through humanitarian efforts, food aid, clothes, and more.”<\/p>\n

Irish photographers and writers respond to contemporary Ireland, its urban and rural ecologies, gender in modern Ireland, and other relevant issues of our time. The event is called “Landscapes of Crisis.” The event will include readings from performance poet Dave Lordan and author Mike McCormack. The first part of the event will take place at the James Joyce Street Gallery at 18:00. An initiative is under way to have one or more Raise your Spirits parades over the weekend 25-27 Oct. But there are not many details available yet. It originally sounded as if a parade was planned EVERY evening, but now it seems more likely that there will be one parade only on Sunday evening. The other days are still listed as “Raise your Spirit” festival days, but is anything happening on them? Nobody seems to know.<\/p>\n

DLR Events invites all kids with their parents to the Samhain\/Halloween event “The Haunted Forest Walk” in Marlay Park.<\/p>\n

There will be spooky thrills, chills and frights and the forest at Marlay Park will be alive with freaky fog, ghastly spiders and dragons, creepy eyeballs and pumpkins, spine chilling skeletons and menacing witches and wizards.<\/p>\n

The walk is approx 1.5km long on a path suitable for buggies\/wheelchairs. Come in your Halloween costumes but remember that it is an outdoor event, so warm clothing is recommended. (There will be no Fireworks display at this event.) Admission is free between 15:30 and 20:30 but a wristband is requireds and wristbands will NOT be available on the day of the event.<\/p>\n

Instead, wristbands can be collected at the DLR Coco Market in Marlay Park on Sat 19 October & Sat 26 Oct from 11:00 each day. Wristbands will be available while stocks last on a strictly first come, first served basis, limited to six per family. Entry times to queue for the Haunted Walk printed on your Wristband will be 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30 and 19:30. Parking in the College Road Car Park is very limited, so use public transport as much as possible.<\/p>\n

Ryanair Logic<\/strong><\/p>\n

We all have to be hugely grateful to Ryanair for having been the only reason the other airlines were prepared to look at new ways that would allow to reduce the cost of flying. But being grateful for a great deed in the past doesn’t mean that Ryanair should get a “free pass” for all eternity. Since they shook up the airline market, they have done LOTS and LOTS of bad and unacceptable stuff as well. And their claim that they are cheap is absolutely not true anymore. Still cheaper than airline tickets once were, but the really competitive times are long over. We all have our Ryanair stories and if someone wrote them all down, you would have the best book about how NOT to treat customers, but I didn’t even want to go there today.<\/p>\n

The odd thing that I wanted to highlight today was the Ryanair reaction to the budget announcements during the week. Ireland introduced an airport departure tax a few years ago. It was initially EUR 10 and then got reduced to EUR 3. Michael O’Leary, the Ryanair CEO, threatened the Irish government with reducing the number of flights from and to Ireland and he did reduce. He said he will increase again when that tax is gone. And I thought at the time that he had a point. Now that it was announced that from 01 April (not immediately!) the tax will be removed, he immediately promised to bring 1 mio more passengers<\/a> to Ireland.<\/p>\n

So, it seems that these EUR 3 really were a big big problem that made flying to Ireland uncompetitive and expensive, right?<\/p>\n

But wait! Was it not Ryanair who decided to randomly and without need or justification increase the luggage charges<\/a> by whopping EUR 20 for the summer? How is EUR 3 a problem and EUR 20 is not a problem? Michael O’Leary really often talks cr@p.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive.
