Where do I start today? Maybe with the fact that I didn’t get finished! It took me soooo long to write this week’s e-mail magazine. I had some challenges throughout the night some technical and some other and that lead to me breaking my old record of late sending. Something I am not proud of! This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This weekend the main events are a little smaller, but the Re-opening of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) will probably a very busy events. For the altruistic ones, you can help cleaning the Royal Canal. And for the ladies, check out the Swopshop Roadshow on Saturday. The Irish Volunteer Fair takes place too. Either on Saturday or Sunday you should check out the Sculpture in Context if you are interested. It is the very last week!<\/p>\n

On Sunday the Fusion Sunday takes place in teh Food Co-Op and if you want to see the Ferocious Mingle Marcade for the last time in Thomas Street, then do that on Sunday too (it will move to Camden Street!)<\/p>\n

Bridges of Dublin – New website<\/h2>\n
\n

Dublin has a few of them: There are bridges over the Liffey, over the Grand Canal and over the Royal Canal but that is not all, there are plenty more smaller bridges and a number of Rail bridges over streets etc.<\/p>\n

Dublin City has now launched a website that gives a number of bridges a life and a proper identity. Location, History, Architecture, Name and even Stories about and around the bridges are captured on this website.<\/p>\n

A littler anorak-y maybe? Well, a resource of information about something that is part of our environment, so that’s not REALLY anorak-y. ;-)<\/p>\n

By the way, many bridges are not included (yet?), but a great start is made with all Liffey Bridges and a few more on top of that.<\/p>\n

Google Changes Terms and Conditions – Watch out!!<\/h2>\n

Suddenly last night Google had a small blue notification bar at the top of the Google Search Page and that small bar mentioned in small print that Google will change their Terms & Conditions and you can check them out and they will then become valid from 11 November.<\/p>\n

Well, many people don’t read Terms & Conditions, but in this case it is definitely worth it: Google wants to use your information INCLUDING your picture to advertise for other goods. If you ever commented or expressed online that you liked a certain product Google would like to show your picture (from Google+ or from your GMail or Google account) next to that product. Sneaky? Big time!<\/p>\n

So check out the Ts&Cs and then if you are not in favour of the new changes, change it back. Children’s Book Festival<\/h2>\n
\n

For the whole month of October the 23rd CBI Children’s Book Festival will take place. Libraries, schools and bookshops across the country will host events with Irish and international children\u2019s writers and illustrators. The 2012 festival reached more than 50,000 young readers across Ireland through more than 1,000.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s international authors Conrad Mason (The Demon\u2019s Watch), Joseph Delaney (the Spooks series) and Andrew Lane (Young Sherlock Holmes series) will come to Ireland and together with Irish authors and illustrators including Alan Early (Father of Lies Chronicles), Brian Gallagher (Across the Divide) and Claire Hennessy (Dear Diary) they will be meeting children at theatres, arts venues and libraries nationwide.<\/p>\n

Worscht – Sausage Restaurant<\/h2>\n
\n

“Worscht” is word for Wurst (sausage) in SOME German dialects. Coincidentally where I come from it is exactly that word.<\/p>\n

Now a new eatery has opened in George’s Street Arcade that is called “Worscht”. (It will be interesting to find out where the owner is from, but it is certain that he is from Germany. :-) ) He sells all sorts of sausages in a restaurant set-up with potato curls (??).<\/p>\n

For a number of years “Swopshop” was a popular but small boutique in Temple Bar and now a new format is bringing Swopshop back again and it is bigger and better. The Roadshow is one-day fashion exchange event with additional features (3D makeovers, style clinic and photoshoots).<\/p>\n

You can bring your clothes to upgrade them by swopping with others or if you have nothing to swop, you can buy pre-worn clothes for very competitive prices. All clothes are either designer clothes or high-end labels. A service charge of between EUR 0 and EUR 25 is payable to the Swopshop Roadshow. And here is an example:<\/p>\n

A guest brings a French Connection dress in perfect condition (worth approximately \u20ac90 new) and trades for a Ted Baker dress (approximately same value new). The guest pays the service charge of just EUR 8, i.e a small fraction of original cost or cost of buying new. Or they can trade down and pay less (even EUR 0) or upgrade to a higher category and pay slightly more. Even if you have nothing to trade on the day, there will be a price promise which means the absolute max. you will pay is EUR 30 per piece! Sounds cool!<\/p>\n

Even better: Admission is free! There is a limit of people the venue can take, so if you arrive at a time when lots of others are there you might have to wait a bit to get in. Monsanto is the massive international companies that has their finger in everything from genetically modified crops to herbicides etc. and that is destroying food as we know it. Monsanto would prefer to replace nature with their own chemical and biological engineering and in the process they make seeds so expensive that developing countries can’t afford them.<\/p>\n

If you have never heard of Monsanto I strongly recommend that you inform yourself about what the issue is that many many people see as a serious problem.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Sculpture in Context” is a brilliant idea and concept: It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition were beautiful sculptures from talented artists are perfectly integrated in the amazing Botanic Garden.<\/p>\n

“The gardens are not only a botanical haven, and a quiet oasis on the outskirts of a modern European City; they also provide a challenging venue that gives the artist the rare opportunity of realising large-scale work. \u2018Borradh Buan 2013\u2019 a festival of Irish language and cultural events will take place in the axis Theatre from 14-25 October. The festival includes live music, film, theatre, puppetry and storytelling, offering events ranging from a traditional music baby bop to brand new performances in Irish. This new festival is organised by Suas Educational Development together with loval organisations at the universities. Suas Educational Development tackles educational disadvantage in India, Kenya and Ireland<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The Budget 2014 for Ireland will be announced on Tuesday. In the past it was announced just about a month before it was applied (i.e. in the beginning of December), so why now in October? The EU wants to get a chance to check the budgets of the EU countries before they become law so that countries that have lost control of their finances can be reigned in. The deadline is 15 October and therefore the Irish Budget for next year will also be announced on 15 October.<\/p>\n

Apart from the expectation that it will be ANOTHER painful budget with cuts and tax increases because Ireland has to save another whopping 2.5 billion, there is (probably! – I am not an expert) a significant difference to previous years: In the past tax increases for alcohol, cigarettes and fuel often already took force from the midnight of the day of the announcement. But that I would expect that this required that the Dail had approved the Budget. With the announcement of a Draft Budget that will then be checked by the EU, it probably means that no tax increases will come into effect on the same day. Is that a big change? Not at all. The pain the budget will cause will be the bigger problem.<\/p>\n

All radio, TV and newspaper websites have special Budget coverage on their sites and you will be able to find all the details there. I am not sure if the announcement will take place at 14:00 or any other time. So check closer to the date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

UCD Centre for Science is hosting the CERN travelling exhibition “Mission Higgs” as part of the month-long celebrations for the opening of the this new science building.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the Higgs boson last year was one of mankind’s most important scientific achievement both in terms of our understanding of the universe, and the worldwide theoretical, experimental, and political collaboration that made it happen. CERN provides extensive outreach on its activities, through their web, museums in Geneva, tours of its facilities and the travelling exhibition. The exhibition presents an overview of CERN and its flagship project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), through a combination of large graphic panels, on-screen displays and videos.<\/p>\n

Admission is free from 09:00-21:00 weekdays from 09 Oct-28 Oct (with the exception of Friday 18 Oct). Everyone is welcome to come and take a self-guided tour. UCD Centre for Science is hosting the CERN travelling exhibition “Mission Higgs” as part of the month-long celebrations for the opening of the this new science building.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the Higgs boson last year was one of mankind’s most important scientific achievement both in terms of our understanding of the universe, and the worldwide theoretical, experimental, and political collaboration that made it happen. CERN provides extensive outreach on its activities, through their web, museums in Geneva, tours of its facilities and the travelling exhibition. The exhibition presents an overview of CERN and its flagship project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), through a combination of large graphic panels, on-screen displays and videos.<\/p>\n

Admission is free from 09:00-21:00 weekdays from 09 Oct-28 Oct (with the exception of Friday 18 Oct). Everyone is welcome to come and take a self-guided tour. The “8×8 Documentary Film Festival” will take place from 14-18 October in TCD and from 21-25 October in DCU.<\/p>\n

This new festival is organised by Suas Educational Development together with loval organisations at the universities. Suas Educational Development tackles educational disadvantage in India, Kenya and Ireland<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The week-long festival on each campus will screen documentaries on a range of development issues and includes films that have already featured at major international film festivals in the last year and been nominated for awards. In addition to film screenings, there will be workshops hosted by visiting directors and producers and panel discussions on the issues explored in the films.<\/p>\n

St Audeon\u2019s is hosting a \u201cHarvest Gathering\u201d on Friday 18 Oct. with a revival of a Harvest Thanksgiving in St Audoen\u2019s, the only surviving medieval Church in Dublin. The church is next door to the other St Audeon\u2019s on High Street, centre for the Polish Chaplaincy.<\/p>\n

The Church will be decorated with flowers, foliage, fruit and vegetables, and the Gathering will be celebrated in singing and with music, poetry and readings.<\/p>\n

The ancient bells of St Audeon\u2019s will be rung before the event which will be followed by a reception in the Visitor Centre, where traditional Harvest and Halloween fare will be provided. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.<\/p>\n

The produce of fruit and vegetables, donated towards the decoration of the church for this thanksgiving will be on display over the weekend of October 18 to 20. All produce will then be donated to the Morning Star Hostel for the homeless.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

DLR Events invites all kids with their parents to the Samhain\/Halloween event “The Haunted Forest Walk” in Marlay Park.<\/p>\n

There will be spooky thrills, chills and frights and the forest at Marlay Park will be alive with freaky fog, ghastly spiders and dragons, creepy eyeballs and pumpkins, spine chilling skeletons and menacing witches and wizards.<\/p>\n

The walk is approx 1.5km long on a path suitable for buggies\/wheelchairs. Come in your Halloween costumes but remember that it is an outdoor event, so warm clothing is recommended. (There will be no Fireworks display at this event.) Admission is free between 15:30 and 20:30 but a wristband is requireds and wristbands will NOT be available on the day of the event.<\/p>\n

Instead, wristbands can be collected at the DLR Coco Market in Marlay Park on Sat 19 October & Sat 26 Oct from 11:00 each day. Wristbands will be available while stocks last on a strictly first come, first served basis, limited to six per family. “Foremost” Silliness<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you know the word “foremost”? What does it mean? The Merriem Webster Dictionary says<\/p>\n

“fore-most” (adjective); most important, 1: first in a series or progression; 2: of first rank or position<\/p>\n

So if it does mean “most important” or “best” (which is of the first rank), then why do people not use it? Is the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) the foremost day-by-day event guide? Or is it the best? Or the one ranked first? (In what ranking system?) I am convinced that the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is the best day-by-day event guide focusing on free events.<\/p>\n

Why do people use “foremost”? In a week I would say that I get AT LEAST 5 press releases that claim that the performer, event, or whatever that is promoted in the Press Release is the “foremost” whatever.<\/p>\n

The Alliance Francaise wrote on their website “Aragon was the foremost French poet of the twentieth century. A surrealist, a communist and a member of the Resistance, he made his mark not just with his poetry but also with his vivid personality.” “Foremost” here means really nothing.<\/p>\n

My suspicion is that PR agencies and event organisers use “foremost” where they are not brave enough to write “best” or any other superlative. “Foremost” is sufficiently hazy. It means something good but we don’t really know what. If I said band xyz is the “best” band, people of different taste would contradict me. There can be only ONE “best”. But if I call the band “foremost” band, then nobody will take issue with it because nobody really knows what it means. AND there can be LOTS of “foremost” bands.<\/p>\n

So “foremost” is a superlative without meaning!? DON’T USE IT THEN!!! Odd!!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive.
