Hi all!<\/p>\n

So this was a bit of a mixed week! The great news is that we arrived at and exceeded 17,000 subscribers. 20k is not that far away. ;-) Actually, doubling the number of the Dublin Event Guide users by spreading the word better, was one of the aims that I had included in the Arthur Guinness Project Application (AGP).<\/p>\n

Ohh, and that was the bad news during the week:
\nThe judges of AGP have – in their ultimate wisdom – decided that the Dublin Event Guide will not be invited to the next round, the interview round. It was disappointing, but I knew from the beginning that depending on the judge’s flexibility when it comes to defining “Art”, we could be kicked out a lot earlier than we should. That’s why it was important to get not just in the shortlist, but in a good position. Our Position 9 wasn’t enough, but I am not sure if Pos 1 would have pleased the judges enough. (In the Music category the Position 1 project got a rejection letter as well. And I heard from at least two other “Art” project that were above us, that also were rejected.) It will be interesting to see what projects Guinness will declare winners!<\/p>\n

What now? Well, the simple answer is: All will continue! We will grow slower, some improvements might have to get postponed, but AGP is not needed to keep the Dublin Event Guide going. But wait!! What if we still got Guinness to help?? Maybe even without asking them??<\/p>\n

We don’t need a massive amount and not all in one go and you all invested so much effort that it would be a pity if we couldn’t achieve the goals. So what do you think about this:<\/p>\n

Approx. 1000 people helped voting! That’s a lot of people. I would think that each of the people helping (and that includes you) knows at least ONE person in their environment that drinks Guinness (maybe that is even yourself). If we all could find ONE person who would pledge to drink 2x pints of Guinness less in the next 12 months and if that person gave the EUR 10 to you instead of giving it to Guinness, then Guinness could still fund the Dublin Event Guide….indirectly…and without asking them! ;-) What do you think? Is that a crazy idea or are you on board?<\/p>\n

You will take the 10 Euro from Guinness and then click on this “DOINGITALONE” link and fill in the details on the following page. Then TWO (not more!!) payments of exactly EUR 5 will be made by you. The first one now and the second one in 6 months, in March 2014. The 10 Euro are money that you or your friend would otherwise give to Guinness. If you don’t drink Guinness, you are allowed to, but don’t have to contribute from your own money, we only want Guinness’ money. But if you find a friend, family member who is prepared to help you to achieve this maybe you can still help.<\/p>\n

I know it is a mischievous way of getting help from Guinness, but we helped them a lot by advertising for them for weeks when “Arthur Guinness Projects” was mentioned everywhere, so I am sure ;-) they would see the fairness in my suggestion.<\/p>\n

I will keep you posted about our progress on the Facebook Page like I did for the voting and I will take your advise on what we should do with the money afterwards. I have a clear plan, but you will be able to influence that plan or change it. (Every cent will be invested in the Dublin Event Guide!)<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

Today I had to draw a line at 160 events and I could have easily added another 20-30. I find more and more events. Not all of them are big, but sometimes the relatively small ones are the ones with the punch!<\/p>\n

This week, Granby Park is definitely worth a visit again and if you bring your kids on Sunday, you will be the coolest parent! Sculpture in Context is providing a free tour on Saturday with the artists present. Nice add-on bonus. The Jobs Expo is on for another day on Saturday and the Dublin Fashion Festival is in full swing. I like the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market because of its cultural variety.<\/p>\n

Some interesting talks during the week! For me the most interesting ones are the one about Working at -60 degrees on Tuesday and the one with the French Polar Explorer on Wednesday. Both could be booked out soon, but they weren’t yet when I wrote this.<\/p>\n

Down With Jazz is inspired by the 1930’s movement to ban jazz music from the dancehalls and airwaves in Ireland by members of the church and GAA. It is a music festival with 3 days of the finest Irish based jazz, blues, funk and world musicians. It will take place at Meeting House Square and the bug umbrellas give you the protection of an indoors venue with the airiness of an open air gig.<\/p>\n

I was at that festival last year and really enjoyed it. The little promo clip here http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1Wjy5L7ZCus<\/a> doesn’t tell you that much about the event itself. but just imagine really good jazz, blues and funk in a cool venue. That’ll do!<\/p>\n

Rosie Hackett Bridge<\/h2>\n
\n

I already mentioned it briefly on Facebook during the week: The new LUAS bridge over the Liffey that is still being built will be named “Rosie Hackett Bridge”. Many will ask “Rosie Who?” and even the author of the book “Lockout: Dublin 1913”, Padraig Yeates, says at 38:30 in the You Tube video here<\/a> that Rosie Hackett wasn’t a remarkable person, but that together with 1000s of others she supported the labour movement and survived the Lockout. But he also says that he thinks as a representative of all those 1000s of people Rosie Hackett is a deserving “name-giver”.<\/p>\n

There is a goo chance that the reasons for Dublin City Councillors choosing he rname was that: 1) She was connected to the 1913 Lockout. 2) She is a woman.
\nIf 2013 wasn’t the year of the Lockout commemoration, it is doubtful that Rosie Hackett’s name had been chosen and if there hadn’t been a big uproar about the fact that in the City Centre none of the bridges are named after women, she would possibly not have had a chance. (There are bridges named after women outside of the City Centre.)<\/p>\n

My favourite from the shortlisted names was Bram Stoker, but I have no problem with Rosie Hackett as the chosen name. To most of us the name a bridge carries is rather inconsequential anyway and we might not even know the names or the people behind the names. What do you know about Butt or Grattan or Father Mathew or O’Donovan Rossa or Talbot or Frank Sherwin or Sean Heuston? Some of these names you might never have heard and still they are names of bridges in Dublin, other names you have heard but you don’t know or can’t remember who was behind it. (Some were even robbed of their first names!). And in the end, to most, the new bridge will probably always be the “LUAS Bridge”.<\/p>\n

And another thought: Had the naming process started a little later, would the bridge maybe now – after recent events – be named differently? Seamus Heaney Bridge maybe?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

I reported last week that the new HMV will accept old Gift Cards and Vouchers but don’t rush into the shops just yet. The new HMV has opened the Henry Street Shop again this Friday and the shops in Dundrum and Liffey Valley will follow, but gift cards and vouchers won’t be accepted straight away, only after an exchange process and then only for one month. The HMV Press Release says:<\/p>\n

“From Friday 6th September until Friday 11th October 2013, customers with a valid HMV gift card should log on to hmv.ie, or pick up a leaflet in store which will explain the exchange process. Customers will be invited to register online for verification, and will then be issued with a new card of the same value week commencing 14th October 2013. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ireland as a member state of the EU, the OPW selected artworks by 40 contemporary artists under the age of 40 from the Irish State Art Collection. The works were created by artists who are either Irish or live in Ireland.<\/p>\n

After the exhibition toured Europe during the six months of the Irish Presidency, 40\/40\/40 has returned to Ireland. The works span all media: photography, drawing, sculpture and painting. The State Art Collection, which is managed by the OPW, contains over 15,000 artworks and decorative objects.<\/p>\n

On a vacant site where a few years ago still social housing was standing, the voluntary arts collective, Upstart, has created a big urban Pop-up Park, called Granby Park. The park will be there until 22 Sept. During this time a whole range of events will take place in the park and nearly all of them will be free.<\/p>\n

“Urban Park” usually means that you have to go a bit easy on your expectations regarding plants and greenery, but if you consider that work only started in July, you can imagine that the term “park” has to be interpreted a good bit wider. One thing is certain, though: It will be nicer than Wolf Tone Square, which Dublin City at times likes to call “Wolfe Tone Park”.<\/p>\n

Granby Park will be open Mon-Fri from 08:00-19:00 and Sat&Sun from 10:00-19:00 and you are invited to visit it. Food & Drink will be sold on site, but alcohol is not permitted.<\/p>\n

This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com<\/a> and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.<\/p>\n

All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”<\/p>\n

More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.<\/p>\n

I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.<\/p>\n

ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.<\/p>\n

Czech artist Josef Haring (*1952) invited all Dubliners to take part in his new European project, which started already on Thursday, but they didn’t tell me until a few hours before. Well, luckily it is a 3-day event and you will still be able to take part on Saturday.<\/p>\n

During his project he intends to travel the Europe and create an imaginary portrait of various European cities. Everybody can take part and become a co-author of this piece of art. Photographs of all participants will be displayed along with the painting in each city, with one large exhibition of the whole series at the end of the project.<\/p>\n

You can contribute and express your views and feelings about Dublin on four canvasses at the O’Connell Monument in O’Connoll Street. Participation is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Sculpture in Context” is a brilliant idea and concept: It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition were beautiful sculptures from talented artists are perfectly integrated in the amazing Botanic Garden.<\/p>\n

“The gardens are not only a botanical haven, and a quiet oasis on the outskirts of a modern European City; they also provide a challenging venue that gives the artist the rare opportunity of realising large-scale work. The sculptures will be displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the Visitor Centre. On Saturdays throughout the exhibition, you will have a rare opportunity to join the artists for a guided tour throughout the exhibition. “<\/p>\n

On a vacant site where a few years ago still social housing was standing, the voluntary arts collective, Upstart, has created a big urban Pop-up Park, called Granby Park. The park will be there until 22 Sept. During this time a whole range of events will take place in the park and nearly all of them will be free.<\/p>\n

“Urban Park” usually means that you have to go a bit easy on your expectations regarding plants and greenery, but if you consider that work only started in July, you can imagine that the term “park” has to be interpreted a good bit wider. One thing is certain, though: It will be nicer than Wolf Tone Square, which Dublin City at times likes to call “Wolfe Tone Park”.<\/p>\n

Granby Park will be open Mon-Fri from 08:00-19:00 and Sat&Sun from 10:00-19:00 and you are invited to visit it. Food & Drink will be sold on site, but alcohol is not permitted.<\/p>\n

The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”<\/p>\n

More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.<\/p>\n

I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.<\/p>\n

ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.<\/p>\n

“What is Life Like at -60\u00b0C?” is the title of a Caf\u00e9 scientifique talk in the Alliance Francaise with Claire le Calvez.<\/p>\n

“Le Calvez is the scientific manager of Concordia, the French-Italian research station located on the Antarctic plateau where temperatures can reach -80\u00b0C during winter time. During these 9 winter months, just 15 people live and work there, while in summer time, the population can grow to as many as 90 people, including scientists and technicians. Life at Concordia has to be organized around environmental and community constraints, as well as the scientists\u2019 projects… A significant challenge which has to be tackled every year!”<\/p>\n

This September, the 4th Underground Cinema Film Festival will take place in Dun Laoghaire from 12-15 Sept. The venues are the Pavilion Theatre, The Royal Marine Hotel and the Dun Laoghaire Club. Over 100 films from adventurous independent filmmakers will be screened and in addition there are workshops, the Underground Cinema Expo and an evening entertainment programme with BBQ and music.<\/p>\n

Film Festivals are usually not free and the same applies to the Underground Film Festival. However, all the workshops at the festival are free and the Expo is free too and for that reason I am happy to mention this festival and recommend that you check free AND non free events. This is a VERY early advance notive, I know. A whole month until Culture Night takes place, but you wouldn’t believe how popular the Leinster House tours are. I got an early heads up and I will quickly pass it on to you so that you have a chance to book your place on the tour. I did the Leinster House (that’s the building where the Irish Parliament is in) last year and it is extremely interesting.<\/p>\n

So, if you want to look behind the curtains of political power at a tour, don’t delay and book as soon as possible!<\/p>\n

The Jane Austen Society of Ireland, in association with the OPW, presents an evening celebrating the 200th year anniversary of the publication of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in Farmleigh House, with author Sophia Hillan discussing Jane Austen and her Irish connections. HMV Mania!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

A shop that sells somewhat out-dated products re-opens after going bankrupt and being bought by a new company. It was closed for a coulpe of month and nothing earth-shattering has happened since. Other similar shops stayed open and all their products are easily available online either for tangible goods purchase or for non-tangible goods consumption.<\/p>\n

So all in all nothing too exciting! Yes, I mentioned it more than once too, but that was because of the Gift Card issue and because I nearly lost EUR 100 that I now hope to recover.<\/p>\n

But what happened here: https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=hmv+henry+street&src=typd&mode=realtime<\/a> ? How does this re-opening of a long-term doomed shop justify that level of mania? And why oh why did people not give their love to Tower Records, who are and were working hard while HMV took a summer holiday?<\/p>\n
