Hi all!<\/p>\n

When I sent the Dublin Event Guide last week the Arthur Guinness Project voting wasn’t over yet, but I hope you all have LIKED the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DublinEventGuide<\/a> and if you have done so, then you know that we made it to Position 9 in the end. :-) An amazing achievement, considering that we were coming from the back of the field. So, once again: Thank you sooo much!<\/p>\n

Next steps? Now the judges are mulling over who to award the price and my guess is that out of the 34 short listed Arts projects only about 10 will get funding. So there will be lots of disappointed applicants. Are we save? Absolutely not! There are a number of very strange projects in the list of the 340 applicants, but the majority of the short-listed projects are genuinely interesting and good projects. Some fit into “Art” better than others if you have a more narrow definition of the term and nobody knows what exactly the judges are looking for. The announcement will be made in about 2 weeks and I will inform you on Facebook as soon as I am formally told. Keep your fingers crossed!<\/p>\n

I am late again with this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and I find it difficult to speed up the process of compiling this weekly e-mail magazine. I am trying a few different things, but nothing resulted in an improvement yet. I won’t give up, though! :-)<\/p>\n

Many will be away in Stradbally at the Electric Picnic and if you look the list of events this week, you might think there is less happening. You are partially right, there is no big headline event and some normally weekly events even got moved to the Electric Picnic, but there are still more than 160 events in the list. Dublin is always busy if you want it to be! :-)<\/p>\n

More and more people find out about it and about our big community and this Dublin Event Guide Community keeps growing! There is a good chance that we reach the big number of 30,000 Facebook Likes! And we possibly also get to more than 17,000 e-mail magazine subscribers! It is great! This weekend, I suggest that you check out the Granby Pop-Up Park! If you have children, don’t miss the Family Fitness & Adventure Day at Farmleigh House, it sounds cool and I wish I was a kid! If you want to learn more, go to the RDS, where the Which Course Expo takes place. And then there are two very unique events taking place this weekend: The Smithfield Horse Fair is taking place and is the second and last that will take place this year. And then there is the 1913 Lockout Commemoration on Sunday. An event that could be quite interesting or very very boring, depending on your interest and on how it is put in reality.<\/p>\n

Down With Jazz is inspired by the 1930’s movement to ban jazz music from the dancehalls and airwaves in Ireland by members of the church and GAA. It is a music festival with 3 days of the finest Irish based jazz, blues, funk and world musicians. It will take place at Meeting House Square and the bug umbrellas give you the protection of an indoors venue with the airiness of an open air gig.<\/p>\n

I was at that festival last year and really enjoyed it. The little promo clip here http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1Wjy5L7ZCus<\/a> doesn’t tell you that much about the event itself. but just imagine really good jazz, blues and funk in a cool venue. That’ll do!<\/p>\n

New HMV to accept old gift cards and vouchers!<\/h2>\n

This is great news for HMV gift card or voucher owners. So, the new HMV (which has no legal obligation to accept the vouchers of the old bankrupt company) has decided to accept lots and lots of cards and vouchers. This will be a straight loss for the company, but a great thing for the people. I would recommend that you don’t wait too long, just in case. The HMV news is good for consumers, but only time will tell if it is the right decision for the company. Another company, Peats World of Electronics has thrown the towel now for good. They closed about 2 years ago and then re-opened only two shops and wanted to put more focus on online sales, but seemingly that never happened and the shops didn’t generate enough money. So, Goodbye Peats! @TheDrawingRoom is an interesting new project designed to develop our awareness of architecture, culture and heritage through a series of events in some of Dublin\u2019s finest Georgian town houses. As an alternative to the concert hall or a gallery setting, you can enjoy music and art in selected houses. There will be multimedia installations, photography, ceramics, painting and furniture design exhibitions. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ireland as a member state of the EU, the OPW selected artworks by 40 contemporary artists under the age of 40 from the Irish State Art Collection. The works were created by artists who are either Irish or live in Ireland.<\/p>\n

After the exhibition toured Europe during the six months of the Irish Presidency, 40\/40\/40 has returned to Ireland. The works span all media: photography, drawing, sculpture and painting. The State Art Collection, which is managed by the OPW, contains over 15,000 artworks and decorative objects.<\/p>\n

On a vacant site where a few years ago still social housing was standing, the voluntary arts collective, Upstart, has created a big urban Pop-up Park, called Granby Park. The park opened on Thursday and will be there until 22 Sept. During this time a whole range of events will take place in the park and nearly all of them will be free.<\/p>\n

“Urban Park” usually means that you have to go a bit easy on your expectations regarding plants and greenery, but if you consider that work only started in July, you can imagine that the term “park” has to be interpreted a good bit wider. One thing is certain, though: It will be nicer than Wolf Tone Square, which Dublin City at times likes to call “Wolfe Tone Park”.<\/p>\n

Granby Park will be open Mon-Fri from 08:00-19:00 and Sat&Sun from 10:00-19:00 and you are invited to visit it. Food & Drink will be sold on site, but alcohol is not permitted.<\/p>\n

I strongly recommend that you check it out and I will also tell you about the upcoming events in the next few weeks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”<\/p>\n

More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.<\/p>\n

I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.<\/p>\n

ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.<\/p>\n

In order to raise awareness for Childhood Cancer, a group of parents of children with cancer have set up an organisation called Light it Up Gold<\/a>. In September, which is world childhood cancer awareness month, they are planning to light up significant and prominent buildings around Ireland. Buildings like the O2, the Convention Centre and The Mansion House are on board in Dublin and there are more buildings in other parts of Ireland.<\/p>\n

Smithfield Horse Fair<\/h2>\n

The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. If I remember right, the fair is a right that is firmly written down. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.<\/p>\n

It seems they couldn’t stop it<\/a> or make it illegal, but they were able to limit the market to twice per year and so the newly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September.<\/p>\n

To take the trading element out somewhat and to add another “softer” dynamic, music, storytelling and other entertainment was added.<\/p>\n

The September Horse Fair is the second ever under the new rules and nobody knows yet if it will still be a horse market or maybe not anymore because the traders stay away and sell and buy their horses elsewhere.<\/p>\n

On a vacant site where a few years ago still social housing was standing, the voluntary arts collective, Upstart, has created a big urban Pop-up Park, called Granby Park. The park opened on Thursday and will be there until 22 Sept. During this time a whole range of events will take place in the park and nearly all of them will be free.<\/p>\n

“Urban Park” usually means that you have to go a bit easy on your expectations regarding plants and greenery, but if you consider that work only started in July, you can imagine that the term “park” has to be interpreted a good bit wider. One thing is certain, though: It will be nicer than Wolf Tone Square, which Dublin City at times likes to call “Wolfe Tone Park”.<\/p>\n

Granby Park will be open Mon-Fri from 08:00-19:00 and Sat&Sun from 10:00-19:00 and you are invited to visit it. Food & Drink will be sold on site, but alcohol is not permitted.<\/p>\n

I strongly recommend that you check it out and I will also tell you about the upcoming events in the next few weeks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Organized by the 1913 Lockout Centenary committee, the Dublin Council of Trade Unions and the North Inner City Folklore Project, the Bloody Sunday, a day on which many workers were injured due to police brutality during the 1913 Lockout, will be commemorated and re-enacted. The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”<\/p>\n

More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.<\/p>\n

I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.<\/p>\n

ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.<\/p>\n

Om 02 Sept 1913 the tenement house at 66 Church Street collapsed and seven people died. The secen who died are buried on Glasnevin Cemetery and on Monday the Mayor of Dublin and Trade Union representatives will lay wreaths at their graves. “Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.<\/p>\n

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is a VERY early advance notive, I know. A whole month until Culture Night takes place, but you wouldn’t believe how popular the Leinster House tours are. I got an early heads up and I will quickly pass it on to you so that you have a chance to book your place on the tour. I did the Leinster House (that’s the building where the Irish Parliament is in) last year and it is extremely interesting.<\/p>\n

So, if you want to look behind the curtains of political power at a tour, don’t delay and book as soon as possible!<\/p>\n

The Jane Austen Society of Ireland, in association with the OPW, presents an evening celebrating the 200th year anniversary of the publication of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in Farmleigh House, with author Sophia Hillan discussing Jane Austen and her Irish connections. Enjoy some live music from the Regency period at a wine reception and delight in readings from some of Austen’s most famous novels.<\/p>\n

This is a ticketed event, but tickets are free for the lucky people who win the random lottery. Too many wreaths?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

I could write a lot more about the 1913 Lockout Commemoration and the Tennement House Collapse Commemoration that I don’t fully get, but I think I will leave that. Maybe one day, someone can explain to me, why this is such a BIG celebration or commemoration.<\/p>\n

It was a historic event and maybe or possibly it was a very influential historic event, at least if you listen to the Trade Unions. But there are LOTS and LOTS of historic events that might also or even more have had an influence on the now. Are we maybe over-doing the commemoration of sombre and sad events?<\/p>\n

The State Commemoration on Sunday in O’Connell Street is similar to the State Commemoration at Easter for the Easter Rising. It is all very very formal and more wreaths than thinking about the positive achievements these tough times and events created.<\/p>\n

In 3 years, when the Easter Rising Commemoration will take place at the 100th anniversary, it could easily be that we have soldiers marching down O’Connell Street, the president laying a wreath and the gravity of the event making any laughter ill-placed.<\/p>\n

I would celebrate the Easter Rising differently! I would have a big street party for children and adults in O’Connell Street, a carnival, a celebration. Because if we assume that the 1916 Easter Rising had such a big impact on Irish history, then we should thank the people that were passionate about their cause by celebrating them, not mourning them.<\/p>\n

Maybe it is me who is odd! But let me put it like that: When I am buried, I would rather have people celebrating that they met me than mourning that I am gone. So, who is for a 1916 Easter Rising celebration!?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
