Eventful weeks at the Dublin Event Guide HQ (i.e. my desk :-) )!<\/p>\n

On 21 July we reached the milestone of 15,000 Facebook Likes, which was a great achievement! But within days and – with the help of the great Rami J who likes the Dublin Event Guide and was prepared to help BIG – we increased that number so significantly that today we have more than 19,500 Likes!! That is 4500 additional Likes in 10 days! Amazing what is possible if the right people come together!<\/p>\n

With so many new Likes, you can expect a big increase in subscribers to the e-mail magazine and this means that we have now arrived at 15,626 subscribers. Welcome to all new subscribers, it is great to have you here. :-)<\/p>\n

With so many new people in our Dublin Event Guide Community, let me just repeat a few things about the Dublin Event Guide again:<\/p>\n

1) All events listed here are free (unless otherwise clearly identified).<\/p>\n

2) This mail is VERY long (I know!), but you are NOT meant to read all of it! Like with a newspaper, read the headline and if you are interested, read more. Otherwise just move on.<\/p>\n

4) There is no commercial company behind the Dublin Event Guide, instead I compile it every week in my spare time. Please consider that when you project you measure this e-mail magazine against your expectations or preferences.<\/p>\n

Untick the “Social” and “Promotions” Inbox and you are back to the previous set up. If you leave the other Inboxes in place, the Dublin Event Guide will probably appear in promotions and it doesn’t belong there! If you “Star” this e-mail, it MIGHT from then on also bet back into your Primary Inbox, but there is no guarantee.<\/p>\n

10) You can also help the Dublin Event Guide by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy\/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link\/ad that you find in this e-zine\/newsletter (Groupon<\/a>, LivingSocial<\/a>, Amazon<\/a>, Book Depository<\/a>, LastMinute<\/a> etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

This is an odd weekend I have to say! Because of the Bank Holiday weekend there are festivals and events taking place in nearly every little village throughout Ireland. 41 festivals!! Everywhere APART from Dublin! The August Bank Holiday weekend is usually the quietest summer months weekend, but this year it is even extremer because sooo much is happening elsewhere. It seems that Event Organisers in Dublin are afraid of the bank holiday exodus from the capital or maybe of the holiday season or they are afraid of Oxegen and Castlepalooza etc and therefore avoid running events when people might be away? I am not sure what it is!<\/p>\n

Luckily, the good people of Bray are not afraid of it and with just a little southward travel we can partake in their great Bray Summer Fest. This week with a big closing Fireworks. And there is also the Northside Music Festival, which will start with an Urban Fleadh on Wolfe Tone Square on Sat and Sun. If I can find the time, I will also go to the Greystones Americana & Roots Festival. I have been there before and it is getting better and better. That’s four festivals already!<\/p>\n

On Monday check out the North Face Climbing Wall outside Filmbase, you can learn how to climb if you are interested. And at some stage over the weekend, or in the coming weeks, check out the Sand Sculpture exhibition in Dublin Castle. It has been great in previous year and I expect no less!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

The Dublin Libraries and – separately – the different branches of the National Museum run different programmes \/ events in the summer for children. With the National Museums, these events are usually drop in classes and with the libraries in Dublin nearly always booking is required. Novel Fair Competition – Call for Entries – Irish Writers’ Centre<\/h2>\n

The Irish Writers\u2019 Centre is inviting all aspiring authors to submit their work to the third Novel Fair Competition. Following the huge success in the first two years, the Irish Writers\u2019 Centre would love to set even more novelists on the path to publication. 6 book deals came out of previous Novel Fair Competitions!<\/p>\n

Unpublished novelists are invited to submit up to 10,000 words of their manuscripts to be in with the chance to win this amazing prize. This year\u2019s deadline is 16 October and twelve winners will go through to pitch their work at the Novel Fair on 22 February 2014.<\/p>\n

This is a cool art installation! Every year for the last 11 years, a group of sculptors turns more than eighty tons of sand in a unique exhibition\/installation outside in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle.<\/p>\n

This year’s theme for the sculptures is “The Bright Side” and will show what is good about Ireland and being Irish. Three big sand sculptures will be carved by the artists from Duthain Dealbh (Irish Sand Sculpture) from 29 July – 05 Aug and a fourth sculpture will be created from 10-14 Aug. The exhibition will run from 06-28 Aug and all will disappear on 29 Aug.<\/p>\n

If you go to Dublin Castle over the weekend, you can still see the creation process and from Tuesday you can admire the end product. I have seen the Sand Sculpture Exhibition in previous years and definitely recommend a visit. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”<\/p>\n

More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.<\/p>\n

I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.<\/p>\n

ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.<\/p>\n

Northside Music Festival<\/h2>\n

The Northside Music Festival got bigger and better! It will run from 03-25 August and there are lots more events this year than in previous years, which is great!<\/p>\n

It will start on Saturday and Sunday with an Urban Fleadh at Wolfe Tone Square. Traditional Irish Music will open the event at 12:00. at 12:15 the festival will be formally launched by Dublin’s Mayor, followed by more traditional Irish Music at 12:20. At 13:00 an exhibition of Sean Nos Dancing will take place and at 13:30 you are invited to take part in the dancing. More traditional music from 16:30 and another round of dancing from 17:00. Then at 18:00 the Ronan O Snodaigh Trio will perform.<\/p>\n

During the day there will be Lice music in smaller session tents as well and in the evening after the gig, the fleadh will continue in pubs nearby (Church Bar, Parnell Heritage Pub, McNeills, Nealon’s, Boar’s Head).<\/p>\n

Children’s Games and Storytelling will also take place.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the same schedule will apply again, the only change is that at 18:00, The Woodbines, a Celtic Rock Band will perform.<\/p>\n

Sand Sculpture Exhibition<\/h2>\n

This is a cool art installation! Every year for the last 11 years, a group of sculptors turns more than eighty tons of sand in a unique exhibition\/installation outside in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle.<\/p>\n

This year’s theme for the sculptures is “The Bright Side” and will show what is good about Ireland and being Irish. Three big sand sculptures will be carved by the artists from Duthain Dealbh (Irish Sand Sculpture) from 29 July – 05 Aug and a fourth sculpture will be created from 10-14 Aug. The exhibition will run from 06-28 Aug and all will disappear on 29 Aug.<\/p>\n

If you go to Dublin Castle over the weekend, you can still see the creation process and from Tuesday you can admire the end product. I have seen the Sand Sculpture Exhibition in previous years and definitely recommend a visit. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”<\/p>\n

More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.<\/p>\n

I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.<\/p>\n

ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.<\/p>\n

The Northside Music Festival got bigger and better! It will run from 03-25 August and there are lots more events this year than in previous years, which is great!<\/p>\n

It will start on Saturday and Sunday with an Urban Fleadh at Wolfe Tone Square. Traditional Irish Music will open the event at 12:00. at 12:15 the festival will be formally launched by Dublin’s Mayor, followed by more traditional Irish Music at 12:20. At 13:00 an exhibition of Sean Nos Dancing will take place and at 13:30 you are invited to take part in the dancing. More traditional music from 16:30 and another round of dancing from 17:00. Then at 18:00 the Ronan O Snodaigh Trio will perform.<\/p>\n

During the day there will be Lice music in smaller session tents as well and in the evening after the gig, the fleadh will continue in pubs nearby (Church Bar, Parnell Heritage Pub, McNeills, Nealon’s, Boar’s Head).<\/p>\n

Children’s Games and Storytelling will also take place.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the same schedule will apply again, the only change is that at 18:00, The Woodbines, a Celtic Rock Band will perform.<\/p>\n

Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon<\/h2>\n

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon takes place on Monday and it is a 21 km long street party, according to the organisers. Participation is not free, but if there is a street party then even the audience should benefit nicely from it. But it starts inconveniently early for a street party! The Start Line is at St. Stephen’s Green and the Finish Line is at Earlsfort Terrace.<\/p>\n

From the start line at the Harcourt Street end of St. Stephen’s Green, the race goes to Kevin Street, Patrick Street, passing by St. Patrick’s Cathedral, then Christ Church Cathedral onto the South Quays to Heuston Station. The next 7.5 km are in Phoenix Park, which it leaves at Islandbridge, then onwards to Chapelizod, then to fringes of Ballyfermot (Sarsfield Road), to Kilmainham, South Circular Road, through Rialto, Dolphins Barn, Portobello, Charlemont Street, Harcourt Terrace and then onto Earlsfort Terrace with a finish outside the Conrad Hotel. The stage for the gig at the Finish Line is at the Leeson Street corner of St. Stephen’s Green.<\/p>\n

A number of bands will play<\/a> along the course and some of the better known performers are Moo, Santoria, Jupiter Forest, Radio Friendlies, Elevation Falls and at the finish line, The Delorentos (11:00-12:00). Performance areas are about every mile in sometimes unexpected places and you should check the map at http:\/\/ie.competitor.com\/dublin\/course<\/a> to find them.<\/p>\n

8000 participants are expected by the organisers and rolling road closures will take place from 08:10 until 14:00 with earlier closures for the zones around the start and finish line.<\/p>\n

If you like a bit of music in the morning, check the band list, but since there is no list available that identifies which band performs where, it all is a bit of a lucky dip apart from the Finish Line performance by The Delorentos.<\/p>\n

I have to admit that I expected a bit more Street Carnival and crowd entertainment when I heard about this event a few months ago, but I keep forgetting that it is a race that is organised by a commercial organisation, so the focus might be on something else.<\/p>\n

Participants have to collect their gear and for this there is an Expo that has free admission. You could still register for the race there if you want but you can imagine that it is not free (EUR 55). More information about the Expo in a separate entry on Sat + Sun.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The August Bank Holiday Monday is typically a relatively quiet day as far as events are concerned. Nearly all shops are open as normal, but be aware that many museums and touristic sites are closed on Mondays (and that includes Bank Holidays). Some of the regular events are also affected by bank holidays. Some Monday events might not take place, but even some SUNDAY events could not take place or could be postponed to the Monday (as the last day of the weekend). Ideally you double check the events you want to go to to make sure that is is happening.<\/p>\n

If you drive a car: Bus Lanes and Loading Bays and other day restricted “things” like cycling lanes do stick to the day and don’t care if it is a holiday or not. So don’t park or drive in a bus lane or on a cycling lane that is active on a Monday. The only exception: Pay & Display Parking is not enforced on bank holidays.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sand Sculpture Exhibition<\/h2>\n

This is a cool art installation! Every year for the last 11 years, a group of sculptors turns more than eighty tons of sand in a unique exhibition\/installation outside in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle.<\/p>\n

This year’s theme for the sculptures is “The Bright Side” and will show what is good about Ireland and being Irish. Three big sand sculptures will be carved by the artists from Duthain Dealbh (Irish Sand Sculpture) from 29 July – 05 Aug and a fourth sculpture will be created from 10-14 Aug. The exhibition will run from 06-28 Aug and all will disappear on 29 Aug.<\/p>\n

If you go to Dublin Castle over the weekend, you can still see the creation process and from Tuesday you can admire the end product. I have seen the Sand Sculpture Exhibition in previous years and definitely recommend a visit. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sand Sculpture Exhibition<\/h2>\n

This is a cool art installation! Every year for the last 11 years, a group of sculptors turns more than eighty tons of sand in a unique exhibition\/installation outside in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle.<\/p>\n

This year’s theme for the sculptures is “The Bright Side” and will show what is good about Ireland and being Irish. Three big sand sculptures will be carved by the artists from Duthain Dealbh (Irish Sand Sculpture) from 29 July – 05 Aug and a fourth sculpture will be created from 10-14 Aug. The exhibition will run from 06-28 Aug and all will disappear on 29 Aug.<\/p>\n

I have seen the Sand Sculpture Exhibition in previous years and definitely recommend a visit. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is a cool art installation! Every year for the last 11 years, a group of sculptors turns more than eighty tons of sand in a unique exhibition\/installation outside in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle.<\/p>\n

This year’s theme for the sculptures is “The Bright Side” and will show what is good about Ireland and being Irish. Three big sand sculptures will be carved by the artists from Duthain Dealbh (Irish Sand Sculpture) from 29 July – 05 Aug and a fourth sculpture will be created from 10-14 Aug. The exhibition will run from 06-28 Aug and all will disappear on 29 Aug.<\/p>\n

I have seen the Sand Sculpture Exhibition in previous years and definitely recommend a visit. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is a great idea to have a market like that. I know that some people were wondering if it is just a repeat of the Designer Mart that takes place on a Saturday. I didn’t make it to the Night Market yet and am therefore not sure, but there would not necessarily be anything wrong with that as it has to start somewhere and then grow. Other critique was that there are no food stalls, but I would say the Temple Bar traders would prefer if you came to their premises for food. ;-) So not having additional food stalls probably makes a lot of sense to them!?<\/p>\n

Give it a go. It is the last market unless more will be scheduled soon and it can only get improved if people go to it….otherwise it will disappear again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is a cool art installation! Every year for the last 11 years, a group of sculptors turns more than eighty tons of sand in a unique exhibition\/installation outside in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle.<\/p>\n

This year’s theme for the sculptures is “The Bright Side” and will show what is good about Ireland and being Irish. Three big sand sculptures will be carved by the artists from Duthain Dealbh (Irish Sand Sculpture) from 29 July – 05 Aug and a fourth sculpture will be created from 10-14 Aug. The exhibition will run from 06-28 Aug and all will disappear on 29 Aug.<\/p>\n

I have seen the Sand Sculpture Exhibition in previous years and definitely recommend a visit. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Elevate Arts Production is a group of DCU MA in Multimedia students, who did a group dissertation and have developed a short film as part of it.<\/p>\n

The short film creatively expresses the ideas and philosophies behind the Maslow\u2019s Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow believed that we all have the ability to transcend our emotional and psychological state to a higher level of being, but that we also have a set of needs that are arranged in five hierarchical stages (physiological, safety, love\/belonging, esteem and self-actualization). Maslow’s ideas are very interesting if you are interested in the slightest in personal development and you can read more about it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Maslow’s theory will be interpreted in the short-film and expressed through the protagonist Laia, who travels through each
\nphysiological and psychological stage within the film.<\/p>\n

The film will be screened from 09-11 August in the Exchange all-day on a continual loop and the audience is encouraged to interact and assess the theory and maybe\/hopefully reflect about it and develop an interest in personal growth.<\/p>\n

Vintner Federation – Idiotic beyond belief?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Vintner’s Federation of Ireland represents the pubs in Ireland and understandably does lobby and fight on behalf of their members (the pubs) against or for anything that will bring them an advantage. No problem with that! We might not agree with many of the things they come up with (actually I NEVER agreed with them EVER), but they have a job to do.<\/p>\n

However, unless they are on a remote island or unless they think people are too stupid to liste and read what ideas they come up with, you would expect that they go around on their toes, carefully nudging and lobbying in favour of their clients. Not so! The Vintner’s Federation is happy to annoy all their paying customer with their hairbrained ideas just for MAYBE a small advantage.<\/p>\n

Or how else could you explain the idea of a “lid levy”? A lid levy means that if you go to an off-licence (Enemy No 1 for pubs) you have to pay a surcharge on the alcohol you buy. And this surcharge is then used to pay sports organisations the money that they lose when Sports Sponsorship by Alcol brands will be forbidden.<\/p>\n

Wait! Did they just say: We won’t reduce the alcohol price in pubs despite the fact that the alcohol company doesn’t need some part of the money anymore for sponsorship. Instead we will keep that money now in our pocket and, you know what, why don’t you just pay more so that the poor sports clubs get some money from you.<\/p>\n

I genuinely see a problem for sports clubs if sports sponsorhip by alcohol brands will be forbidden, but the Vintner’s idea must be the oddest and most idiotic idea of them all. Just The only intention is to come up with SOME justification for increasing the off-licence price and the Vintner’s don’t care how crazy the idea is they dream up. What an odd bunch! I’d say they need some PR consultant to help them with the “shooting your own foot” problem. http:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/lid-levy-alcohol-sponsorship-sports-1013466-Jul2013\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
