I had some customer related problems today and that’s why what was planned as an early release time of this Dublin Event Guide turned out to be VERY late. Apologies. There are some more explanations in the Joerg’s Picks section! Check it out.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, grows and grows, faster and faster and this week we all together achieved 15,000 Likes on Facebook. I hope that includes you, but it also includes lots of people – it seems – that have not subscribed to the weekly e-mail magazine, because for the first time ever, the Facebook Likes are now more than the Dublin Event Guide subscribers. Interesting!<\/p>\n

While others (amazingly even event publications!) take summer breaks, the Dublin Event Guide will be reliably with you week after week and will tell you all about the free events in Greater Dublin.<\/p>\n

This weekend there will be the Mini Maker Faire, the Festival of Curiosity, the Bray Summer Fest and the Dublin Flea Market. But that is just the start!!<\/p>\n

If you are a Gmail user, you might have realised that Google has force-introduced new sub-Inboxes for you. There is a “Social” Inbox and a “Promotional” Inbox now in addition to the “Primary” Inbox. This doesn’t make sense to me and I while I would appreciate the OPTION, I have a problem with the change being forced on me. If you want to undo the change, log in to your Gmail account and click on the “+” next to the Inbox tabs. Untick the “Social” and “Promotional” Inbox and you are back to the previous set up. If you leave the other Inboxes in place, I can NOT tell you in which the Dublin Event Guide will appear! I have no control over it.<\/p>\n

The spell-checker is another service that was provided by Google and is not working anymore. (I use TinyMCE as an editor of the backend application for the Dublin Event Guide.) I am not sure if I will be able to find a replacement. Until then, please forgive me if I type badly and make mistakes.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Event Guide is full of free events and receiving this weekly e-mail magazine is always completely free. It is sent to nearly 15,000 people, and it would be great if more would join. With a population of about 1 mio in Dublin, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find another 5,000 people or even more that are interested in free events. To help them, I need your help. Please tell all the people you meet where you hear about all the free events and spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.<\/p>\n

I found a video clip this week by coincidence and it absolutely fascinated me. So much that I have to share it with you. It is a beautiful song in many aspects and is perfectly performed by amazing singers, but on top of that, the performers in that clip show outstanding cooperation and team work. Awe inspiring, I would say!<\/p>\n

The song is called “When I’m gone” and is also known as the “Cup Song”. It is from the movie “Pitch Perfect”, an American music comedy film directed by Jason Moore and is performed in the film by Anna Kendrick.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

First of all apologies for the super late sending. I explained it – to a certain degree – in a Facebook Post: All was looking fine until a day job related issues needed my full attention for a number of hours because a customer had a technical emergency. When I got back I still needed to do more work on this week’s newsletter. I know that the Friday entries are no use to you now, but there are still 7 other days that you can enjoy and on top of that most of the Friday events were alreay in last week’s Dublin Event Guide.<\/p>\n

And here are my Picks for this weekend: You will definitely find me at the Maker Faire on Saturday at the Science Gallery and in Trinity. Yes, it is a slightly geeky event, but I like making and creating things and you will meet super bright people there with smart ideas. If you haven’t seen the current Science Gallery exhibition check it out. It is really good!<\/p>\n

The Festival of Curiosity is also taking place this weekend and sounds interesting. If you have children, check out the Summer in Dublin event at Wolfe Tone Square. And if you don’t have children, then maybe the arty night event & market Nuit Blanche on Saturday from 23:00-04:00 is for you. I will try to get to it.<\/p>\n

You want to watch some fun and are not afraid of colour? The Colour Dash on Saturday and the Rainbow Run on Sunday are for your. Not as a participant, but as a spectator.<\/p>\n

Dublin’s Origami Gathering – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

The first National Origami Event takes place on Sat 27 July from 14:00-18:00. International Paper Artist and author of over 50 books on the subject, Sheffield’s Nick Robinson will be making an appearance at this Origami Open Day. Nick will be giving master classes for enthusiastic beginners, other experts will be available to help throughout the day. Street Performance World Championship Result<\/h2>\n

Did you go to the Street Performance World Championship? And maybe you voted for one (or more) of the performers? But did you hear the result of the vote and the decision on who won the competition?<\/p>\n

The overall winner are the Irish performers Lords of Strut. I can’t tell you if they were good or not, because despite the fact that I saw most performances, it is the 3rd or 4th year that I did not see the one act that finally wins! I HOPE they were really good and that they didn’t win just because of where they come from.<\/p>\n

Second place was Pancho Libre from Mexico and he was definitely outstanding! In general I missed this year the magic element and the juggling. It was represented better in previous years. There was definitely a stronger focus on acrobatics this year. Riverdance World Record<\/h2>\n

It was not really possible to to fail reaching a new world record at last week’s Longest Riverdance Line World Record attempt, so the 1,693 dancers did achieve what they set out to do. Dublin Libraries & National Museum – Summer Programme for children<\/h2>\n

The Dublin Libraries and – separately – the different branches of the National Museum run different programmes \/ events in the summer for children. With the National Museums, these events are usually drop in classes and with the libraries in Dublin nearly always booking is required. The Vodafone Comedy Festival is taking place this weekend in Iveagh Gardens. The festival is definitely not a free event with tickets for each of the 36x 1.5-hour comedy slots going for a ticket price of EUR 20-28. A Cancer Society Fundraiser takes place on Sunday in Phoenix Park and sounds strikingly similar to the Rainbow Run in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday. It is the Cancer Society Colour Dash and is sponsored by Crown Paints. It seems that the two colourful runs are very similar. The fees are similar, the FAQs are nearly identical. Participation is not free (EUR 30 per adult), but registration is closed now (In Dun Laoghaire you can still register on the day.) 100% of the funds raised for the Colour Dash will go to the Irish Cancer Society.<\/p>\n

Watching the event and participating in the post-run (the run is not timed!) entertainment is free, but be prepared to be covered in paint powder anyway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If you go to the Maker Faire this week, you might as well check out that great Science Gallery Exhibition: The exhibition will run from 12 July-29 Sept, but I won’t be able to remind you every week, so you better go early. :-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”<\/p>\n

More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.<\/p>\n

I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.<\/p>\n

ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.<\/p>\n

The second Dublin Mini Maker Faire is taking place in the Science Gallery and on the Physics Lawn at Trinity College Dublin this Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Mini Maker Faire brings together makers, crafters, and DIY-enthusiasts of all ages to share and showcase their inspiring creations to over 5,000 visitors. It unites, inspires, informs, and entertains a growing community of resourceful people who undertake amazing projects in their back gardens, garages and sheds and it is a great event. I was at the Mini Makers Faire last year and am really looking forward to this year’s event.<\/p>\n

This year’s faire will be even bigger and will feature some of Ireland’s most talented makers. Visitors can learn how to make their own guitar effects pedal, pet a giant (but friendly) robotic spider, watch a real-life iron forge in action, find out about internet-connected timelapse photography, and even build the ultimate paper airplane before flying it with a purpose-built pressurised launcher.<\/p>\n

The “Malahide Has It” Festival will take place this weekend. The name of the festival is a little odd, but the festival looks interesting with lots of events for the whole family. The website at http:\/\/www.malahidehasit.com\/<\/a> was not working properly when I checked it. It showed an empty page in the Firefox Browser, but with the Chrome Browser, I was able to access it. This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com<\/a> and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.<\/p>\n

All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Festival of Curiosity is Dublin\u2019s new yearly festival of science & culture and will take place from 25-28 July.
\nEnter the curious world of imagination and exploration where you will think, play and make. Throughout the festival there will be a unique series of hands-on activities, treasure hunts, workshops, robot building, a curiosity carnivall, interactive installations, street games, science busking, interactive theatre and science storytelling \u2013 for all the family.<\/p>\n

The Festival of Curiosity is Dublin\u2019s new yearly festival of science & culture and will take place from 25-28 July.

If you go to the Maker Faire this week, you might as well check out that great Science Gallery Exhibition: The exhibition will run from 12 July-29 Sept, but I won’t be able to remind you every week, so you better go early. :-) Admission is free.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”<\/p>\n

More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.<\/p>\n

I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.<\/p>\n

ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.<\/p>\n

Ireland’s “most fun run” is taking place on the West Pier in Dun Laoghaire. At the Rainbow Run, which is suitably sponsored by washing powder company Vanish, the participants will be doused from head to toe in coloured powder. Participation is not free (it costs EUR 32.54 (!) to participate) but you can watch the event for free and you are invited to take part in the post race party.<\/p>\n

The 5 km run is not really a race, it is not even timed. It is just good fun and who can have something against that. Participants and guests are asked to wear white clothes and be prepared that you will definitely get colourful. The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching\/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Barisons Wind Orchestra is the leading youth wind orchestra in Surrey, UK. Comprised of 20 woodwind, brass and percussion players, the band performs an eclectic blend of musical styles ranging from Vaughan Williams \u2018English Folk Suite\u2019 to film music such as \u2018Pirates of the Caribbean\u2019. The Barisons Chamber Choir has a repertoire ranging from classical pieces such as Handel\u2019s Zadok the Priest and Karl Jenkin\u2019s The Armed Man, to Gospel, Pop and Swing.<\/p>\n

The Vodafone Comedy Festival is taking place this weekend in Iveagh Gardens. The festival is definitely not a free event with tickets for each of the 36x 1.5-hour comedy slots going for a ticket price of EUR 20-28. EUR 56 for an evening (approx. 3 hrs) of comedy seems steep to me, but I am no expert! The programme is here http:\/\/www.vodafonecomedy.com\/programme\/<\/a> and I will let you decide.<\/p>\n

“Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.<\/p>\n

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Japanese Mini-Food – Just odd!<\/strong><\/p>\n

A friend of mine wrote this week on Facebook: “I go on YouTube just to watch a music video and 5 hours later, there I am, watching a tutorial how to talk to a giraffe.” ;-) Something like that happened to me during the week and imagine what I found? A video about the oddest Japanese “food preparation”. It is odd and fascinating at the same time. Turn powder into chips, a hamburger and ketchup!
