Hi all!<\/p>\n

Did you go to the Street Performance World Championship (SPWC) last weekend? If you did, I bet you had a great time. Unless someone is totally lifeless and\/or hates any kind of laughter and fun, it is – in my opinion – virtually impossible to be bored at the SPWC. Sure, I am a little biased because I love the event, but I am certainly not alone. Merrion Square was packed again. The SPWC was – like every year – perfectly planned and organised and we should send our big thanks to the whole SPWC team and all performers.<\/p>\n

This weekend, the Bray Summerfest takes centre stage. On Sunday the yearly Air Show will take place and with the nice weather to continue for another while (We are sooo lucky this year!), this might just be the perfect event to go to.<\/p>\n

And there are approx. 170 other events taking place over the weekend and the coming week, so have a look through this newsletter and select at least one or two events to go to. There are really good and interesting events taking place and even if something is not exactly what you normally would go to, I suggest that you try to go to ONE event per week that is outside your normal range of interests. It will widen your horizon and you will definitely learn something new, maybe even stretch your boundaries for good!<\/p>\n

Remember that all events in the Dublin Event Guide For Free Events are free (unless otherwise clearly stated), and around 170 free cultural events per week in Dublin is definitely a good number.<\/p>\n

This Event Guide is earlier than usual again because I am travelling this weekend and another thing I have to mention again: The spell-checker still doesn’t do its job, so you will find lots more spelling mistakes and typos than usually. Apologies!<\/p>\n

The Dublin Event Guide is always completely free and is sent to nearly 15,000 people. I would be more than happy to send it to even more people and with a population of about 1 mio in Dublin, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find another 5,000 people that are interested in free events. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/em><\/p>\n

Once again (and it doesn’t happen tooo often), I am away this weekend, that’s why you got the Dublin Event Guide this week so early. So, I will not be able to go to any events in Dublin this weekend, but I still had a look for you to see what I would suggest if you are undecided.<\/p>\n

The Bray Air Show is definitely one of the biggest events this weekend, but it is quite busy with lots and lots of people and it is in Bray, which – for some – is just that bit too far to go. In that case, stay closer to home and go to the Rose Festival in Raheny. It is a nice relatively quaint festival and you can see wonderful roses, enjoy some music and just have a great day in a nice Dublin park.<\/p>\n

And the third main event is the Riverdance events with a Family Fun Day in Merrion Square and the Riverdance World Record attempt at the Liffey. Looks interesting!<\/p>\n

Dublin’s Origami Gathering – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

The first National Origami Event takes place on Sat 27 July from 14:00-18:00. International Paper Artist and author of over 50 books on the subject, Sheffield’s Nick Robinson will be making an appearance at this Origami Open Day. Nick will be giving master classes for enthusiastic beginners, other experts will be available to help throughout the day. Calling all singers in Dublin: Be part of the Dublin Fringe Festival!<\/h2>\n

“Songs in the Key of D” will take place during the Fringe Festival on 14 Sept in the Smock Alley Theatre. It is a Choral Exploration of Dublin City and the organisers are looking for singers of all abilities to join them in performing some of Dublin?s best known songs and connect the audience to our city through song.<\/p>\n

Everybody who likes singing is invited to take part you don’t have to be from Dublin or Irish and you don’t have to a good singer. The choir is being set up set up to bring people living in all parts of Dublin together.<\/p>\n

The yearly Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park is taking place this Saturday and Sunday. The 270 acre park has a beautiful Rose Garden in it. Last year the festival took place AFTER the roses had blossomed. This year, it could just be right.<\/p>\n

\nThere will be music from Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, from the Prairie Dawgs (15:00-17:00) and Young Ballet by Ballet Fusion. This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com<\/a> and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.<\/p>\n

All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As part of the Defence Forces activities in the lead in to the centenary of the foundation of ‘The Irish Volunteers, \u00d3glaigh na h\u00c9ireann’ in November 2013, a Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the ‘National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State’ at the National Gallery-side of Merrion Square throughout the summer.<\/p>\n

Ceremonies will take place every Saturday and units from throughout the Defence Forces and across the Army, Air Corps and Naval Service will participate. The memorial site is a pyramid at the side of Merrion Square. On Saturday, Merrion Square will come alive for a day of music and dance with something for everyone in the family, no matter how old. At that Family Day from 14:00 Riverdancers providing some informal instruction for aspiring dancers of any ability.<\/p>\n

For the kids there will be face-painting, bouncy castles, costume make and do, food and refreshments and more.<\/p>\n

Outside the park on Merrion Square West, near the National Gallery a Riverdance C\u00e9il\u00ed (Irish Dancing) will take place from 15:00. The C\u00e9il\u00ed will be led by the best of Riverdance dancers and musicians and will be a chance for everyone to get involved and try their talent (or luck).<\/p>\n

The yearly Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park is taking place this Saturday and Sunday. The 270 acre park has a beautiful Rose Garden in it. Last year the festival took place AFTER the roses had blossomed. This year, it could just be right.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, the Riverdance World Record attempt for the longest Riverdance line \u2013 currently standing at 652 dancers – will take place along Dublin’s Quays. 2000 dancers have registered and registration is closed now, but you can watch this unique event.<\/p>\n

From Sean O\u2019Casey Bridge (That’s the pedestrian bridge at the IFSC), down along City Quay and Sir John Rogerson\u2019s Quay, crossing the Liffey at Samuel Beckett Bridge and returning back up along North Wall Quay and Custom House Quay before finishing up at Sean O\u2019Casey Bridge, the whole distance will be covered by Riverdance dancers who will dance for 5 minutes at 12:00.<\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The next Alchemist Cafe will take place and is entitled “Why isn\u2019t the world more weird?”.<\/p>\n

Quantum physics predicts some pretty amazing things, such as that objects can be in two different places at the same time, and that we can teleport matter. The most amazing aspect of this area of physics, though, is that it has all been tested and is all true! However, we struggle to see quantum effects in anything but the tiniest particles.<\/p>\n

Dr. James Millen from The Quantum Workshop will talk you through why it\u2019s difficult to see quantum effects, how we may get around these problems, and just how far we can push quantum physics into our everyday lives.<\/p>\n

Glasnevin Cemetery Museum is both the guardian and storyteller for more than 1.5 million people. “Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.<\/p>\n

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dublin Event Guide – Odd Goodbyes!<\/strong><\/p>\n

I hope I didn’t worry you with that headline for the This is Odd!! slot this week. ;) I am not saying Goodbye, but I want to tell you about some Goodbyes that I get from people because some are really odd.<\/p>\n

With nearly 15,000 Dublin Event Guide subscribers, there is a certain fluctuation of subscribers every week. Between 70 and 120 join our Dublin Event Guide Community every week and around 5-15 leave it. When people leave (there is always an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the e-mail because it doesn’t make sense to hold on to people that don’t want to get free information about free events) the person unsubscribing is invited to leave a comment \/ reason why he\/she unsubscribes.<\/p>\n

Many do so because they are moving away or were only living in Dublin for a while and then I get the “Moving to Australia” or “I don’t live in Dublin anymore” reasons. But others have other reasons. It impossible to please everybody at all times and some are unhappy with the Dublin Event Guide. I take the critique on board, but don’t always fully understand it.<\/p>\n

“The mail is too long” comes up every now and then. Someone, who we shall call “Brian W”…because that is his name ;-) said that recently. I know it is long, but 170 free events is a lot of stuff, and I wonder if the person complaining does make the same comment about a newspaper along the lines “Your newspaper is much too long. Can you please stop telling me about all these events in the world? It would be more than enough to tell me what happened in my neighbourhood and down the street.”<\/p>\n

Recently I was told by someone “Please get control of your long and nonsensical at times dialogue in these e mails.” Hmmm, sorry? Can you say that again? “Long and nonsensical at times dialogue”? And they are out of control? Oh my? I better catch them before they cause any damage!<\/p>\n

But the oddest (and most confusing) reason was from Dave C a few months ago, who said “Stupid Advertisement Wordings (YOUR PERFECT)”. Since there was never any advertisement with the words “Your Perfect” (he probably means “You’re perfect” anyway, but that was never in any advertisement either) he maybe refers to a “Feel Good Slot”. Now if someone gets upset about a Feel Good slot message, then maybe there are other challenges in that persons life. I wish him all the best! Ohh and if he is not referring to the Feel Good Slot (which is not advertisement), then I am lost even more.<\/p>\n

I hope that you all enjoy the Dublin Event Guide and stay with me and with our big and growing Community for a long long time. But if you ever have to leave, or feel the Dublin Event Guide is not your thing anymore, then let’s part ways and stay friends at the same time.<\/p>\n

I know that I won’t be able to please everybody and I have stopped trying! I am very much interested in critique and opinions and will always consider every reasonable suggestion, but in the end, the Dublin Event Guide will be the best publication _I_ can deliver based on my values and believes and on my skills. If you are part of any type of community (family, club, workplace) you know that it is difficult to please 3-5 people. But pleasing 15,000? Different story!<\/p>\n

There are others too: “My Dublin experience was great with your weekend tips. It’s really useful. But I am emigrating to another country so I won’t need it anymore, It will only make me miss Dublin :(“.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
