This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

After a number of big events over the last 2-3 week, this weekend could be called slightly quieter. Not because there is less events (This week I found 187!) but because there is no real biggies. Doesn’t matter at all. Enjoy the smaller ones AND enjoy the weather.<\/p>\n

The events I will go to are the Space Expo on Sat+Sun and the Cuban Dublin Festival maybe on Sunday afternoon. For parents, there is BioBlitz tomorrow, which is a great opportunity to keep the kids entertained while learning things. Saturday is also the last day EVER of the TCD Shakespeare Festival. So take the opportunity. And Ruaille Buaille is still on.<\/p>\n

On Sunday during the day the Irish Wolfhound Championship take place in Farmleigh House and the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market is always a great place to chill out for a bit. On Sunday evening the last Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass will take place before the summer break (until 15 Sept). so if you always wanted to go, this is your opportunity. I will be there and will try to make the choir sound good. ;-)<\/p>\n

On Thursday the first Temple Bar Night Market is a must and between Tues-Thurs, you should also go to the Dockland’s Book Sale , where you can get lots of books for just EUR 1 each.<\/p>\n

The Great Hunger by Patrick Kavanagh \u2013 Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

Peter Duffy will perform The Great Hunger by Patrick Kavanagh in the Mill Theatre. Peter is originally from County Monaghan and has a natural feel for the language and sensibility of the text.
\nFirst published in 1942, the epic poem \u201cThe Great Hunger\u201d is one of the classics of Irish literature \u2013 many feel it is Kavanagh\u2019s best work, a masterpiece. It is a long narrative poem set in rural County Monaghan in the 1930s\/early 40s. It concerns the life and struggles of the anti-hero and small farmer Patrick Maguire. An un-sentimental portrait of the life and times, it has echoes of The Great Famine in the title and the text. After the performance (approx. 1 hr 10 min) there will be a post performance talk \/ Q&A.<\/p>\n

The Sunday Business Post, which was in examiner ship has been saved from closure. It was bought by Paul Cooke, the former Managing Director of the Irish Daily Star and the investment firm Key Capital. They paid EUR 750,000 for it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

EPA Warning: Dangerous Heatwave!<\/h2>\n

What is wrong with Irish organisations like SafeFood, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and similar useless money-wasting public organisations? Are their employees really as idiotic as their output suggests? Safefood are the people who try to tell you that you should wash your dishcloths every 2 days because otherwise you will get killed by bacteria or something worse. They have a track record of nonsensical scare-mongering advise.<\/p>\n

The EPA on the other hand seemed quite reasonable, but you won’t believe what they published yesterday: The newest publication is called “Extreme Temperatures and Mortality in Ireland<\/a>” and it is written by (they deserve to be named!) Mathilde Pascal, Pat Goodman, Luke Clancy and Joel Schwartz. In it, the esteemed researchers found out that seven heatwaves in the last 30 years in Ireland resulted in increased deaths, illness and hospitalisation. Heatwaves?? In Ireland? Come on!<\/p>\n

Their definition of “heatwave” is; 2 consecutive days where the maximum daily temperature is above 25 degrees. I know, if you are from Spain or Italy etc or even from Germany, Poland and the majority of other continental European countries, you definitely wonder if they are having a laugh. If you are African or South American or Asian, you KNOW that they have lost it!<\/p>\n

I guess based on this report all humans in Mediterranean or even warmer countries must be close to extinction!? It reminds me of something I learnt in school about the first train in Germany: 1835 the first train went from Nuernberg to Fuerth (a 6 km distance) and drove at a speed of 35 km\/h. Back then, scientists warned that the human body is not able to travel at those mad speeds and people using this train thing will suffer brain damage.<\/p>\n

A group of 9 emerging Dublin based costume designers from the Inchicore College of Further Education have created 9 historically accurate period costumes in both men\u2019s and women\u2019s wear ranging from Elizabethan times up to 1913.They will be exhibiting the costumes at a free exhibition and I saw some very impressive pictures. You should have a look at it in Filmbase.<\/p>\n

De Gaulle: A Quiet Holiday: A Photographic Exhibition on De Gaulle’s visit to Ireland in 1969<\/h2>\n

The exhibition shows original photographs from the Kennelly Archive of De Gaulle’s visit to Ireland after he left power in May 1969. Portraits of the McCartans, De Gaulle’s Irish ancestors, will also be exhibited. Padraig and Joan Kennelly, founders of a small photographic studio in Tralee, Co. DIT Graduate Show 2013<\/h2>\n

The most wide-ranging graduate exhibition in the country, the DIT Graduate Show 2013, runs from 04 June until 16 June. The show includes work from students of fine art, visual communications, photography, interior and furniture design, visual merchandising, design display and product design.<\/p>\n

Exhibitions take place in a number of venues across Dublin: DIT Portland Row, Temple Bar, DIT Linen Hall and The Chocolate Factory, King\u2019s Inn Street,<\/p>\n

The Chocolate Factory will host part of DITX2013 (Visual Communications, Interior & Furniture Design, Visual Merchandising and Product Design) from Friday 07 June-Monday 10 June (Times: Opening on 07 June from 19:00, then 11:00 \u2013 18:00 on 08 June to 10 June.<\/p>\n

The Architecture End of Year Exhibition opens on Fri 07 June (at 18:30) and will run until 14 June (closed Sundays) with opening hours of 09:00-17:00. It will take place in DIT Linen Hall, Bolton Street, Dublin 1.<\/p>\n

The Fine Art show will be in DIT Portland Row, St Joseph\u2019s Convent, Portland Row, Dublin 1 and runs from Thurs 06 June – Sat 15 June (Closed Sundays). From 10:30 \u2013 16:30.<\/p>\n

Finally the DIT Graduate Photography Show will take place in the Gallery of Photography, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin, from Tues 04 – Sun 16 June. Opening hours are 11:00-18:00 (Tues \u2013 Sat) and 13:00-18:00 (Sun) and in the National Photographic Archive, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 with the opening hours 10:00 \u2013 16:45 (Mon\u2013 Sat), 12:00 \u2013 16:45 (Sun).<\/p>\n

The European Space Expo will visit Trinity College Dublin next week and will take place in the “Space Dome” on the Front Square in TCD. This is a spectacular travelling exhibit that shows how space and its applications provide benefits to Europe. There will be lots of activities surrounding the Space Expo visit, including space-related workshops for kids, an Irish space industry event, public talks, and lots more.<\/p>\n

The Space Expo highlights the critical role of space and space-based technologies to Europe. In Ireland, there is an active space science and astronomy research community who have worked with the European Space Agency for many decades. What\u2019s more, there are now over 40 Irish companies working with ESA on everything from telecommunications, to materials, to remote sensing of our oceans.<\/p>\n

Every day there are a number of Soap Box Talks about interesting Space related topics given by talented scientists and every day at 13:00 you have a chance to remotely control a world-famous telescope on the Canary Islands and take pictures of the Sun.<\/p>\n

The exhibition and talks seem to be targeting not just space enthusiasts or even experts, but are suitable for everyone and a schools and kids programme will target the younger audience.<\/p>\n

I will definitely go to the Space Expo, it sounds really exciting and I’d say after ISS Commander Chris Hadfield made everything “spacey” a lot more interesting and accessible for “normal” people, this exhibition will be hugely popular. Give it a go! Admission is free!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Trinity College Dublin Shakespeare Festival 2013 will be the biggest Shakespeare Festival ever to take place in Ireland (from 03-08 June) and it will also be the last TCD Shakespeare Festival! So if you always wanted to experience this festival or have a soft sport for Shakespeare, come to this year’s events. Do NOT postpone it to next year, there will be no next year!<\/p>\n

Up to 500 performers, both professional and amateur will take part in over 50 outdoor performances of Shakespeare\u2019s work in the streets and parks of Dublin to bring the greatest playwright of all time out of classrooms and libraries and into some of Dublin\u2019s most beautiful locations.<\/p>\n

On 07 and 08 June, over a 24 hour period, Dubliners will be challenged to identify and record as many species of flora and fauna in St Anne\u2019s Park and at North Bull Island.<\/p>\n

On Friday evening a “Species of the Night” event takes place. There will be a Photographic Exhibition “Moths on Canvas” by Philip Strickland in the Red Stables in St. Anne’s Park. The Trinity College Dublin Shakespeare Festival 2013 will be the biggest Shakespeare Festival ever to take place in Ireland (from 03-08 June) and it will also be the last TCD Shakespeare Festival! So if you always wanted to experience this festival or have a soft sport for Shakespeare, come to this year’s events. Do NOT postpone it to next year, there will be no next year!<\/p>\n

Up to 500 performers, both professional and amateur will take part in over 50 outdoor performances of Shakespeare\u2019s work in the streets and parks of Dublin to bring the greatest playwright of all time out of classrooms and libraries and into some of Dublin\u2019s most beautiful locations.<\/p>\n

On Fri and Sat a BioBlitz event takes place in St. Anne’s Park. BioBlitz is an annual National Event that intends to raise biodiversity awareness for beginners and experts and invites people to get out to explore nature and discover a wide range of species of flora and fauna in their locality.<\/p>\n

On 07 and 08 June, over a 24 hour period, Dubliners will be challenged to identify and record as many species of flora and fauna in St Anne\u2019s Park and at North Bull Island.<\/p>\n

At North Bull Island events take place in the Interpretative Centre from 10:30-17:30. The European Space Expo will visit Trinity College Dublin next week and will take place in the “Space Dome” on the Front Square in TCD. This is a spectacular travelling exhibit that shows how space and its applications provide benefits to Europe. There will be lots of activities surrounding the Space Expo visit, including space-related workshops for kids, an Irish space industry event, public talks, and lots more.<\/p>\n

The Space Expo highlights the critical role of space and space-based technologies to Europe. In Ireland, there is an active space science and astronomy research community who have worked with the European Space Agency for many decades. What\u2019s more, there are now over 40 Irish companies working with ESA on everything from telecommunications, to materials, to remote sensing of our oceans.<\/p>\n

Every day there are a number of Soap Box Talks about interesting Space related topics given by talented scientists and every day at 13:00 you have a chance to remotely control a world-famous telescope on the Canary Islands and take pictures of the Sun.<\/p>\n

The exhibition and talks seem to be targeting not just space enthusiasts or even experts, but are suitable for everyone and a schools and kids programme will target the younger audience.<\/p>\n

I will definitely go to the Space Expo, it sounds really exciting and I’d say after ISS Commander Chris Hadfield made everything “spacey” a lot more interesting and accessible for “normal” people, this exhibition will be hugely popular. Give it a go! Admission is free!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Temple Bar Company, an organisation that represents the traders in Temple Bar, is introducing a really good idea: In June, July and August, there will be a Temple Bar Night Market (13 June, 11 July, 08 Aug), bringing artists and craft makers onto the streets of Temple Bar. A Live Painting Area will feature artists (Kathrina Rupit, Poncho, Loki, JTB, Faigy Art, Kevin Bohan and Sinead Bailey) and articles on sale at the market will include handmade soaps, candles, beadwork, fashion, upcycled arts and crafts and jewellery. There will also be live music from Super Happy Fun Times.<\/p>\n

The 2-day Symposium “Writing Home: Irish Culture and Wartime Europe, 1938-48” organised by the School of English, Trinity College Dublin will take place on Thurs and Fri.<\/p>\n

The decade between 1938 and 1948 was a time of immense revolutionary upheaval across Europe, but tends to have been characterised as a time of stagnation and isolation for Ireland. “Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.<\/p>\n

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Addiction in Ireland – A national pastime?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the last week two interesting (or shocking) news emerged. The first one in the last week of May was about the relationship of Irish people with alcohol and the second one was about Smoking in Ireland. These are the “simple” addictions and I won’t even go near any heavier addictions, But read this:<\/p>\n

At the European Week Against Cancer, it emerged that Irish people drink 700 (!!) times the recommended exposure level to alcohol. The average drinker over 15 drinks over 11 litres of pure alcohol per year. 11 litres of PURE alcohol!? Someone calculated that this would be equivalent to 10.5 pints of beer per week (and many might say that this seems very little ;-) ), but if 10.5 pints is 700 times over the recommended level, that doesn’t leave a lot of pints until you reach the recommended level. The article I found was here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A few days later, I read that the OECD published a report<\/a> that said Ireland, Greece and Chile maintain the highest level of smoking among all OECD countries with 30% of the adult population smoking daily. And interestingly, it seems that the smoking ban did nothing to reduce the number of smokers! If you look at the graphic “Change in smoking rates” on the right hand side of the website, it tells you the change between 1990 and 2010 and Ireland has the LOWEST reduction among the 25 countries listed. Less than 5% gave up smoking?<\/p>\n

Shocking stuff and it seems that in the World Addiction Championship, Ireland would have a good chance to win one of the medals!<\/p>\n

On a completely separate note, I always wonder if “Irish people” means “people in Ireland that are Irish” or if it means “people in Ireland”. If it is the latter, then I wonder who is drinking “my” 11 litres of pure alcohol, cause it sure ain’t me!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
