I know, after the early delivery of the Dublin Event Guide last week, you probably were hoping for the same again this week. And now this week it is back to the late sending. I know! Life is full of surprises! :-)<\/p>\n

I got a surprise last week when completely unexpected the Matt Cooper Show (The Last Word) on Today FM rang on Thursday to ask me if I would be prepared to come to the studio and talk about weekend events a couple of hours later. It was nice to be asked and who knows, maybe they will need me a few more times. I would be happy to do that. Because Today FM is a national radio station, we had to put a lot of non-Dublin events in as well and also I couldn’t stick with free events only, but that’s no problem. It is not an ideological reason anyway why this newsletter\/e-zine focuses on free events.<\/p>\n

Sometimes people don’t realise, but the name is there for a reason. The events in this Dublin Event Guide are all free (unless otherwise clearly noted). This week I have one or two non-free events included. Yes, it is an exception, but if an organsation runs lots of free events throughout the year and then needs a bit of help with a (non-free) fundraiser, I am more than happy to help.<\/p>\n

Speaking of fundraiser….it is the beginning of the month again and I need your help again. You remember, I need to find EUR 170 every month. Can you chip in 1 Euro per month for the Dublin Event Guide? That’s just EUR 12 Euro for the whole year. Cheap as chips! ;-) Thanks a lot, Your help is needed!<\/p>\n

Did you follow my advise last week and went to the Dublin City Soul Festival? If you did, you had a brilliant time – without a doubt! The weather was outstanding and the music was brilliant as every year. Chris Maher and his team delivered a super festival again and I am already looking forward to next year’s Soul Festival. ;-)<\/p>\n

Now the weekly appeal to spread the word: Help your friends, family and colleagues as well to enjoy Dublin more. Every week there are at least 60 new subscribers. Help bring that to 100 or even 150 per week! All the help I get is used to cover the cost of EUR 170 per month. Apart from searching for events and writing about them, every month I have to find EUR 170. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

This week the “Joerg’s Picks” are not difficult to put together.<\/p>\n

I will start with a non-free event, though. I love Treasure Hunts, so on Saturday I will try to take part in the Milk & Cookie Story Scavangers Assemble event. It really sounds great. And there is another non-free event on my list for this weekend. Bord Bia was so nice to give me a pair of tickets for Bloom, so I will go there again.<\/p>\n

Now to the free events: I will definitely be at the Riverfest on Sat or Sun or Mon! Then at the Kitefest on Sunday. Have a look at the Improvised Walking Tours on Saturday and Sunday as well.<\/p>\n

The Great Hunger by Patrick Kavanagh \u2013 Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

Peter Duffy will perform The Great Hunger by Patrick Kavanagh in the Mill Theatre. Peter is originally from County Monaghan and has a natural feel for the language and sensibility of the text.
\nFirst published in 1942, the epic poem \u201cThe Great Hunger\u201d is one of the classics of Irish literature \u2013 many feel it is Kavanagh\u2019s best work, a masterpiece. It is a long narrative poem set in rural County Monaghan in the 1930s\/early 40s. It concerns the life and struggles of the anti-hero and small farmer Patrick Maguire. An un-sentimental portrait of the life and times, it has echoes of The Great Famine in the title and the text. After the performance (approx. 1 hr 10 min) there will be a post performance talk \/ Q&A.<\/p>\n

BLOOM IN THE PARK – TICKET COMPETITION<\/h2>\n

Bord Bia\u2019s Bloom Festival is taking place again in Phoenix Park and this year it will run from Thurs 30 May – Mon 03 June. Bloom is Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family event and in previous years 90,000 people visited the event. Tickets for the Festival cost from EUR 20 for adults and kids go free, there are various concession and early bird prices if you book on line and they can be bought on http:\/\/www.ticketmaster.ie\/bloomdiscount<\/a><\/p>\n

Dublin City – Major building site! Grafton Street AND the whole new LUAS route.<\/h2>\n

You heard that it is expected that the LUAS interconnect building work will begin at some stage this year? And that for a long long time, Stephen’s Green, Dawson Street, Kildare Street, College Green, Westmoreland Street, D’Olier Street, O’Connell Street and Marlborough Street will be dug up\/building sites\/a mess!? For the LUAS work last time it took YEARS and shops and pubs closed down because customers stayed away.<\/p>\n

Now it has announced that the Grafton Street “revamp” will also get underway soon. From July until November 2014 the paving in Grafton Street will be replaced. The (I think) nice red paving will be replaced with grey granite stones. It is a pity, I find, as Grafton Street looks a lot nicer than the new look that will be like Henry Street. The paving in Grafton Street needs some repair, but I am not sure if it will be NICER afterwards. Either way, the impact will be huge! Did you read that? 2014!?!?!?!! Ok, they are taking a break for 8 weeks over Christmas and New Year, but 15 months to re-pave a street???<\/p>\n

And the other impressive part: The closures of Dublin Castle, Farmleigh House, the Museum of Modern Art and now Grafton Street de- and re-construction all happen during that oh, so important year for tourism? Inviting people to come to a building site!? You call it “Gathering”! http:\/\/www.dublinpeople.com\/article.php?id=2418&l=100<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Beerhouse to open<\/h2>\n

During a time when we hear more about pub and restaurant closures than about openings it is great to see that there are still people that take the risk and start new things and hopefully they will be rewarded. This week the new “Beerhouse” in Capel Street is just about to open (It was planned for last night, but had to be postponed for a day or two).<\/p>\n

I haven’t been there yet and only saw some pictures. From the pictures I would say, it is a cafe-like venue that sells beer instead of cafe but that has the look and feel of a cafe. ;-) Interesting new idea. They are promising to have lots of life music events, so you will hear about the Beerhouse regularly here in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).<\/p>\n

The place is\/wants to be quirky or at least different and that is good. The address indicates that as well: 84.5 Capel Street!? ;-) The place is at the very top of Capel Street at the junction with Bolton Street if I interpret Google Maps correctly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Chesterfield Avenue Weekend Closure until September<\/h2>\n
\n

It didn’t make sense last year and it still does not make sense, but Chesterfield Avenue in Phoenix Park will be closed at weekends (Friday 21:00-Sun 21:00) between 17 May and 29 Sept for the second year. Last year a number of events were planned to take place on Chesterfield Avenue because of the 350th birthday of Phoenix Park. This year there is no event programme. A 18 page document<\/a> about the road closure comes to the main conclusion that the closure made work easier for OPW staff and Gardai WHEN an event took place. But with not many relevant events on Cheserfield Avenue taking place this year and with no other significant advantages, it is absolutely not clear why this quite busy route linking Dublin City with Blanchardstown\/Castleknock should be closed.<\/p>\n

Oh, you wonder why the closure goes from 21:00 until 21:00? Glad you asked! The reason is because we can’t have park staff working during the hours of darkness!! WTF! (Page 15 of the document!)

The Dublin Port Riverfest is a new festival for Dublin. For many years the Maritime Festival invited people to come to the Quays on the June Bank Holiday weekend, but when the Dublin Dockland Development Agency (DDDA) got into hot water a few years back, the Maritime Festival got buried as well.<\/p>\n

Now the Dublin Port Authority took the initiative and will run the Dublin Port Riverfest on North Wall Quay between the Samuel Beckett Bridge and the East Link Toll Bridge.<\/p>\n

Looking at the programme, this year’s Riverfest might not be as multifacetted yet as the Maritime Festival was, but you best check that yourself. ;-) I know, I will.<\/p>\n

There will be a Funfair, a Food & Craft Market, there will be 6 Tall Ships and over 60 gaffers (old sailing boats with gaff rigs<\/a>).<\/p>\n

On Sat 01 June the events take place from 11:00-18:00 with Tall Ships being there, Tug Boat Displays at mid-day, markets the funfair, rowing and curragh races on the Liffey and face painters and balloon artists.<\/p>\n

On Sunday there will also be the “Parade of Sail” at 16:00 with 50 gaffers and Tall ships and the “Between the Bridges” Gaffers Race from 14:00-16:00.<\/p>\n

A series of protest events and marches in many countries will take place on Saturday against Austerity and the Troika (IMF, ECB, EC). In Dublin the event will be at the Garden of Remembrance but a protest march doesn’t seem to be planned.<\/p>\n

Scavengers Assemble is a Photo Treasure Hunt in the City Centre, organised by the people behind the monthly story-telling event “Milk & Cookie Stories”.<\/p>\n

The event is NOT free, but I definitely think it is ok to mention it here because for years, Milk & Cookie Stories is a free events and so I am happy to help with this fundraiser to ensure that Milk & Cookies can continue as a free event. The cost for taking part is EUR 4 and you can take part in groups of up to 5 people.<\/p>\n

The event is suitable for all ages and will be action packed and fun-filled, I am told. Sign-up begins at 12:00 at the Chocolate Factory. At 13:00 the teams will be given a list of challenges and each team then has until 16:00 to complete as many challenges as possible & return to the Chocolate Factory.<\/p>\n

The first Dublin Kite Festival will take place on North Bull Island near Clontarf on Sunday only. There will be Kite Flying Demonstrations, Kite Making Workshops for children and a Kite Making Competition and there will be the Kite Ballet demonstration where kites will be flying to music.<\/p>\n

All entertainment is free and the event is organised by Dublin City Council. It is a great thing that Dublin City is behind many events, but unfortunately many of these events have one thing in common: Detailed information is a rarity. The Dublin Port Riverfest is a new festival for Dublin. For many years the Maritime Festival invited people to come to the Quays on the June Bank Holiday weekend, but when the Dublin Dockland Development Agency (DDDA) got into hot water a few years back, the Maritime Festival got buried as well.<\/p>\n

Now the Dublin Port Authority took the initiative and will run the Dublin Port Riverfest on North Wall Quay between the Samuel Beckett Bridge and the East Link Toll Bridge.<\/p>\n

Looking at the programme, this year’s Riverfest might not be as multifacetted yet as the Maritime Festival was, but you best check that yourself. ;-) I know, I will.<\/p>\n

There will be a Funfair, a Food & Craft Market, there will be 6 Tall Ships and over 60 gaffers (old sailing boats with gaff rigs<\/a>).<\/p>\n

On Sat 01 June the events take place from 11:00-18:00 with Tall Ships being there, Tug Boat Displays at mid-day, markets the funfair, rowing and curragh races on the Liffey and face painters and balloon artists.<\/p>\n

On Sunday there will also be the “Parade of Sail” at 16:00 with 50 gaffers and Tall ships and the “Between the Bridges” Gaffers Race from 14:00-16:00.<\/p>\n

The Trinity College Dublin Shakespeare Festival 2013 will be the biggest Shakespeare Festival ever to take place in Ireland (from 03-08 June) and it will also be the last TCD Shakespeare Festival! Up to 500 performers, both professional and amateur will take part in over 50 outdoor performances of Shakespeare\u2019s work in the streets and parks of Dublin to bring the greatest playwright of all time out of classrooms and libraries and into some of Dublin\u2019s most beautiful locations.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Port Riverfest is a new festival for Dublin. For many years the Maritime Festival invited people to come to the Quays on the June Bank Holiday weekend, but when the Dublin Dockland Development Agency (DDDA) got into hot water a few years back, the Maritime Festival got buried as well.<\/p>\n

Now the Dublin Port Authority took the initiative and will run the Dublin Port Riverfest on North Wall Quay between the Samuel Beckett Bridge and the East Link Toll Bridge.<\/p>\n

Looking at the programme, this year’s Riverfest might not be as multifacetted yet as the Maritime Festival was, but you best check that yourself. ;-) I know, I will.<\/p>\n

There will be a Funfair, a Food & Craft Market, there will be 6 Tall Ships and over 60 gaffers (old sailing boats with gaff rigs<\/a>).<\/p>\n

On Sat 01 June the events take place from 11:00-18:00 with Tall Ships being there, Tug Boat Displays at mid-day, markets the funfair, rowing and curragh races on the Liffey and face painters and balloon artists.<\/p>\n

The Women’s Mini Marathon, a 10km road race, will take place on Monday. Registration to the race is now closed, but you can cheer the 40,000 (!!) runners on, most of whom run for a charity.<\/p>\n

The race will start at 14:00 at Fitzwilliam St Upr, before travelling onto Mount St Lwr, Northumberland Rd, Shelbourne Rd, Merrion Rd, Nutley Lane, up and over the UCD Flyover, onto N11\/Donnybrook Rd inbound, Morehampton Rd, Leeson St and finishing up at St Stephen\u2019s Green East.<\/p>\n

The European Space Expo will visit Trinity College Dublin next week and will take place in the “Space Dome” on the Front Square in TCD. This is a spectacular travelling exhibit that shows how space and its applications provide benefits to Europe. There will be lots of activities surrounding the Space Expo visit, including space-related workshops for kids, an Irish space industry event, public talks, and lots more.<\/p>\n

The Space Expo highlights the critical role of space and space-based technologies to Europe. In Ireland, there is an active space science and astronomy research community who have worked with the European Space Agency for many decades. What\u2019s more, there are now over 40 Irish companies working with ESA on everything from telecommunications, to materials, to remote sensing of our oceans.<\/p>\n

Every day there are a number of Soap Box Talks about interesting Space related topics given by talented scientists and every day at 13:00 you have a chance to remotely control a world-famous telescope on the Canary Islands and take pictures of the Sun.<\/p>\n

The exhibition and talks seem to be targeting not just space enthusiasts or even experts, but are suitable for everyone and a schools and kids programme will target the younger audience.<\/p>\n

I will definitely go to the Space Expo, it sounds really exciting and I’d say after ISS Commander Chris Hadfield made everything “spacey” a lot more interesting and accessible for “normal” people, this exhibition will be hugely popular. Give it a go! Admission is free!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) launched this initiative in 2011 and is still continuing to encourage more people to visit the historic sites that it manages. On all First Wednesdays in 2013 admission is free to OPW sites. Most sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will now be free every first Wednesday as well.

The European Space Expo will visit Trinity College Dublin next week and will take place in the “Space Dome” on the Front Square in TCD. This is a spectacular travelling exhibit that shows how space and its applications provide benefits to Europe. There will be lots of activities surrounding the Space Expo visit, including space-related workshops for kids, an Irish space industry event, public talks, and lots more.<\/p>\n

The Space Expo highlights the critical role of space and space-based technologies to Europe. In Ireland, there is an active space science and astronomy research community who have worked with the European Space Agency for many decades. What\u2019s more, there are now over 40 Irish companies working with ESA on everything from telecommunications, to materials, to remote sensing of our oceans.<\/p>\n

Every day there are a number of Soap Box Talks about interesting Space related topics given by talented scientists and every day at 13:00 you have a chance to remotely control a world-famous telescope on the Canary Islands and take pictures of the Sun.<\/p>\n

The exhibition and talks seem to be targeting not just space enthusiasts or even experts, but are suitable for everyone and a schools and kids programme will target the younger audience.<\/p>\n

I will definitely go to the Space Expo, it sounds really exciting and I’d say after ISS Commander Chris Hadfield made everything “spacey” a lot more interesting and accessible for “normal” people, this exhibition will be hugely popular. Give it a go! Admission is free!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Trinity College Dublin Shakespeare Festival 2013 will be the biggest Shakespeare Festival ever to take place in Ireland (from 03-08 June) and it will also be the last TCD Shakespeare Festival! So if you always wanted to experience this festival or have a soft sport for Shakespeare, come to this year’s events. Do NOT postpone it to next year, there will be no next year!<\/p>\n

Up to 500 performers, both professional and amateur will take part in over 50 outdoor performances of Shakespeare\u2019s work in the streets and parks of Dublin to bring the greatest playwright of all time out of classrooms and libraries and into some of Dublin\u2019s most beautiful locations.<\/p>\n

Every day of the Festival, areas including St. Stephen\u2019s Green, Merrion Square, Christ Church Crypt and St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral will host enactments of some of the most loved scenes in Shakespeare’s works.<\/p>\n

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9 on site and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n‘Risk’ by Michelle Browne is a performance that explores how entrepreneurs and economists respond to risk-taking. It considers entrepreneurship and the gamble that is taken to generate business in the economy. In this curated game of Texas Hold \u2018Em the artist competes against high-profile entrepreneurs, including Joe Macken, Peter Stewart, and Steven Forsyth.
\nQuite often poker is about bluffing, sizing up your competition and betraying nothing during the game. During this game, however, the players are monitored with a shimmer device that tracks their stress levels by measuring things like galvanic skin response, which is used in lie detection tests.<\/p>\n

The European Space Expo will visit Trinity College Dublin next week and will take place in the “Space Dome” on the Front Square in TCD. This is a spectacular travelling exhibit that shows how space and its applications provide benefits to Europe. There will be lots of activities surrounding the Space Expo visit, including space-related workshops for kids, an Irish space industry event, public talks, and lots more.<\/p>\n

The Space Expo highlights the critical role of space and space-based technologies to Europe. In Ireland, there is an active space science and astronomy research community who have worked with the European Space Agency for many decades. What\u2019s more, there are now over 40 Irish companies working with ESA on everything from telecommunications, to materials, to remote sensing of our oceans.<\/p>\n

Every day there are a number of Soap Box Talks about interesting Space related topics given by talented scientists and every day at 13:00 you have a chance to remotely control a world-famous telescope on the Canary Islands and take pictures of the Sun.<\/p>\n

The exhibition and talks seem to be targeting not just space enthusiasts or even experts, but are suitable for everyone and a schools and kids programme will target the younger audience.<\/p>\n

I will definitely go to the Space Expo, it sounds really exciting and I’d say after ISS Commander Chris Hadfield made everything “spacey” a lot more interesting and accessible for “normal” people, this exhibition will be hugely popular. Give it a go! Admission is free!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Trinity College Dublin Shakespeare Festival 2013 will be the biggest Shakespeare Festival ever to take place in Ireland (from 03-08 June) and it will also be the last TCD Shakespeare Festival! So if you always wanted to experience this festival or have a soft sport for Shakespeare, come to this year’s events. Do NOT postpone it to next year, there will be no next year!<\/p>\n

Up to 500 performers, both professional and amateur will take part in over 50 outdoor performances of Shakespeare\u2019s work in the streets and parks of Dublin to bring the greatest playwright of all time out of classrooms and libraries and into some of Dublin\u2019s most beautiful locations.<\/p>\n

Every day of the Festival, areas including St. Stephen\u2019s Green, Merrion Square, Christ Church Crypt and St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral will host enactments of some of the most loved scenes in Shakespeare’s works.<\/p>\n

On Fri and Sat a BioBlitz event takes place in St. Anne’s Park. BioBlitz is an annual National Event that intends to raise biodiversity awareness for beginners and experts and invites people to get out to explore nature and discover a wide range of species of flora and fauna in their locality.<\/p>\n

On 07 and 08 June, over a 24 hour period, Dubliners will be challenged to identify and record as many species of flora and fauna in St Anne\u2019s Park and at North Bull Island.<\/p>\n

On Friday evening a “Species of the Night” event takes place. There will be a Photographic Exhibition “Moths on Canvas” by Philip Strickland in the Red Stables in St. Anne’s Park. A moth trap demonstration will be set up and an evening lecture “Let’s Listen for Bats” and bat walk with Tina Aughney from Bat Conversation Ireland will take place from 20:30. Booking is essential via biodiversity@dublincity.ie<\/p>\n

Music Industry: Move on!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

When was the last time that you bought a Music CD? Many possibly have to go back years! For me, it has been a long long time. Some might have downloaded music illegally, but most just moved to Spotify or Internet Radio stations that have a wide selection of just anything you want without needing to buy a physical CD. Still, the record industry is caught in the stone age and wants ISPs to block Pirate Bay in Ireland<\/a>. They don’t recognise that times have changed significantly and that protectionism is not the way to go forward and they still don’t seem to “get” the Internet, where blocking one address never means that you can’t get to a specific site anymore, it just makes it a tiny bit more awkward.<\/p>\n

Innovation not protectionism is the way forward, but it seems EMI, Sony, Warner Music and Universal don’t want to have anything of it. Spotify? Netflix? And all that other Internet stuff? They don’ t understand that this is MUCH more the reason for us not buying outdated CDs anymore than Pirate Bay. Because of that, they are suing the main Internet service providers in Ireland: UPC, Imagine, Vodafone, Digiweb, Hutchison 3G and Telefonica O2. They want them to block access to Pirate Bay. They don’t need to sue Eircom, by the way, because Eircom is already voluntarily (!) blocking access to Pirate Bay for a while.<\/p>\n

If the record companies succeed, would you really suddenly buy CDs again? I don’t see that happening! With Spotify and a similar Google service to be available soon, the music industry better realises that they have to come up with new ideas not hang on to the old stuff. Newspapers are struggling as well, but I see newspapers adjusting faster than the Warners and EMIs of this world.<\/p>\n

And Pirate Bay? You will always be able to reach it if you are determined to!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
