Hi all!<\/p>\n

I have a big surprise for you today! You are getting the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) for once at a decent time again. Years ago that was always the time when it was sent, but since then I am finding more and more events and therefore it runs later and later.<\/p>\n

The reason why I am early today is purely because I started a day earlier. I know this would be ideal every week, but because I have a day job (until someone comes with a suitcase full of money and suggests that I make the Dublin Event Guide my day job and enjoy his or her money :-) ) I usually can’t start before Thursday night. And why did I start a day earlier? Well, tonight the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir will launch its brand new CD and I am doing the sound engineering for that gig and have to be there very early to get enough time to set up everything. The concert takes place at 20:00 in the O’Reilly Hall in the Belvedere College , Great Danmark Street, Dublin 2. There are still a few ticket available (EUR 15 each) and it would be great to see you there!!<\/p>\n

The rest of the weekend I will spend in Merrion Square for the Soul Picnic, which is the main part of the Dublin City Soul Festival, Last year it was a brilliant warm summer day on the Soul Picnic Sunday and everyone had an amazing time. Sitting in Ireland in a Park when the air is warm and brilliant music plays on stage…what more could you want?<\/p>\n

This newsletter\/e-zine has found its way to you again to tell you all about the super free events that Dublin has to offer and many of you tell me regularly that they found a huge amount of free events only because the Dublin Event Guide highlighted them. Help your friends, family and colleagues as well to enjoy Dublin more. Every week there are about 60 new subscribers. Help bring that to 100 per week! Have you heard of Zach Sobiech? Zach became an Internet celebrity when his song “Clouds” became No 1 on iTunes. The song was his Good-Bye song, because Zach, 18 year old was diagnosed with uncurable cancer. On Monday he unfortunately died. Very sad news, but he certainly lived an inspirational live since he was diagnosed only a few years ago and he leaves his song and his story behind to remind us to make the most of our lives every day. Zach said: “You don\u2019t have to find out you\u2019re dying to start living.”<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. On Friday evening I will be at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir gig in the O’Reilly Hall and you should be there too! ;-)<\/p>\n

On Saturday and Sunday I will be in Merrion Square for the wonderful Dublin City Soul Festival. It is a pity that the Africa Day (in Farmleigh House this year) will take place on Sunday as well because I will miss it again and I will also miss the Battle for the Bay at Dollymount Strand, but I am really looking forward to the Dublin City Soul Festival.<\/p>\n

Gardiner Street Gospel Choir – Lift your Voice – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir is one of the best Gospel Choirs in Ireland and it is in existence for more than 13 years now. I am for the last 8 years with the choir and usually look after the technical side. After a lot of work, the choir recorded a great CD, which you can buy online and very soon also in shops.<\/p>\n

We sing every week from Sept to June at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, but to launch this super CD we will have a concert with all the frills ;-) in the O’Reilly Theatre in Belvedere College. Tickets are EUR 15 and all proceeds will go to the Temple Street Children’s Hospital and to Headway, a support service for people with brain injuries.<\/p>\n

It would be great to have all of you come to the concert ;-) and for two of you I managed to get a pair of tickets each. This concert will be epic and you won’t want to miss it! So, you should buy your ticket here <\/a>to make sure that you still get one. If you live life a little more on the risky side, you could hope for winning a pair of tickets, but imagine you don’t win and all tickets are sold out then? BLOOM IN THE PARK – TICKET COMPETITION<\/h2>\n

Bord Bia\u2019s Bloom Festival is taking place again in Phoenix Park and this year it will run from Thurs 30 May – Mon 03 June. Bloom is Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family event and in previous years 90,000 people visited the event. Tickets for the Festival cost from EUR 20 for adults and kids go free, there are various concession and early bird prices if you book on line and they can be bought on http:\/\/www.ticketmaster.ie\/bloomdiscount<\/a><\/p>\n

Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you\u2019ll get lots of tips on how to start growing at the show. But if gardening isn\u2019t your thing then you\u2019ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the Superb Food Village with plenty of artisan producers; the Best in Season marquees featuring growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Chef’s Summer Kitchen will host live cooking demonstrations from some of Ireland’s much loved chefs including Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Donal Skehan and Rozanne Stevens. The demonstrations will be hosted by TV presenter and foodie, Ella McSweeney who will also interview Irish food producers throughout the weekend.<\/p>\n

Fresh from their tour of Ireland’s Prisons including shows at Dublin’s Mountjoy & Wheatfield Prisons ‘Get Rhythm – A Tribute to Johnny Cash’ will feature songs from throughout Cash’s career. With an 8 piece band replicating the classic Cash, Tennessee Three, Carter Family and Carl Perkins line up. Paul McCann will be recreating the role of Johnny Cash and June Carter’s vocal duties will be performed by Louise O’Reilly.<\/p>\n

We all know Dublin is tiny. For a capital city in Europe the City Centre is amazingly small and some people have callled Dublin a “Capital Village”.But that smallness is one reason for its charm. But let me go back to “Toy Dublin”: Stephen Duffy has created a Tilt-shift video that actually really makes Dublin like a Toy Town. Name this Bridge!<\/h2>\n

Dublin is getting a new bridge. It will be big and they are building on it for a long time and will build for another while. It is the Luas bridge more or less directly next to O’Connell Bridge. And this bridge needs to get a name. 10,000 (!!) submissions were made and it seems that most were silly beacuse the short list of 17 names does not impress particularly. Have a look through the list http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2013\/0516\/450633-bridge-shortlist\/<\/a> many many names you will never have heard before and some on the shortlist STILL don’t make sense, for example Abbey Theatre Bridge. The Graduate Photography exhibition will take place as part of the college’s Creative Week and 27 Photography students will showcase their Final Photographic Project work, ranging from documentary to fine art and more. 5 Visual Media Journalism students will also showcase photographic work and 5 Film students will be screening their documentaries alongside the Photography and Journalism students. The Griffith College Graduate Photography Exhibition and Media Show opening (with food and refreshments) will take place on Wed 29 May at 18:30. Admission is free and all are welcome.<\/p>\n

Dollymount Strand is the venue for this years’s European Kite Boardercross Championships plus Stand-up Paddle Boarding Competition at the “Battle for the Bay”. The best kitesurfers of the world come to the beach to showcase their spectacular skills and gravity defying moves. The annual Paddle Boarding Competition will also take place. Known as SUPing (Stand up Paddle boarding), this sport is currently all the rage and will challenge all competitors. It\u2019s exhilarating and tough. As well as individual races there will be team relay races a technical 6 km and gruelling 14 km Marathon.<\/p>\n

Battle for the Bay is a free weekend for all the family, where you will be entertained and captivated by kitesurfers from across the world. Pure Magic will give demonstrations on the beach, freestyle shows, paddle boarding and kite surfing introductions for newcomers. There will be live music, a Kids Zone, funfair, food village & BBQ plus a Kids Kite Competition. The kidszone will include some fun family amusements: The Gyroscope \u2013 shoreside gravity defying experience, a Bungee Trampoline, Bouncy castles and slides.<\/p>\n

The bands and musicians performing over the weekend are: Elevation Falls, Radio Friendlies, Gangs, Crafty Fuzz, Dirty Epics, Rag Trio, Darragh Cullen.<\/p>\n

The Calcutta Run is a 10 km run for members of the legal profession in Ireland with approx. 1,500 participants. The run is a fundraiser for homeless people in Dublin and Calcutta and the goal this year is to raise EUR 200,000. If you are not working in the legal sector, the run is not for you and as a fundraiser it isn’t free anyway.<\/p>\n

However, there is a barbecue, live music and festivities at the Finish line (in the garden of the law Society) and everyone is invited to that. The Guinness Jazz Band will play before the run.<\/p>\n

The run will start and finish at the Law Society building in Blackhall Place. From there it will go to Arbour Hill, Montpelier Hill and Infirmary Rd before entering the Phoenix Park via NCR Gate. Participants will then continue along North Rd, Military Rd and pass the Wellington Monument before leaving the Park via Parkgate St Gate and will then return to Blackhall Place via Arbour Hill.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Dublin City Soul Festival is taking place this weekend and – like every year – it will be THE music festival in Dublin that you do NOT want to miss. This great festival takes place for the 7th year and Chris Maher (and team) deserve a huge amount of praise for keeping it going despite significant financial challenges. The main event is the 2-day long Soul Picnic in Merrion Square. Admission is free, but donations (suggested: EUR 5 per person) to the Musical Youth Foundation are hoped for. The first 4,000 EUR 5 doantions will get a free raffle ticket for the Instrumenal Art Raffle (see website).<\/p>\n

The festival starts on Friday 24 May with a gig (20:00-03:00) in the Sugarclub with Mixtapes from The Underground, Niwel Tsumbu, Leafzang, The Animators. Admission EUR 10<\/p>\n

Battle for the Bay – Kitesurfing and SUP Championships<\/h2>\n

Dollymount Strand is the venue for this years’s European Kite Boardercross Championships plus Stand-up Paddle Boarding Competition at the “Battle for the Bay”. The best kitesurfers of the world come to the beach to showcase their spectacular skills and gravity defying moves. The annual Paddle Boarding Competition will also take place. Known as SUPing (Stand up Paddle boarding), this sport is currently all the rage and will challenge all competitors. It\u2019s exhilarating and tough. As well as individual races there will be team relay races a technical 6 km and gruelling 14 km Marathon.<\/p>\n

Battle for the Bay is a free weekend for all the family, where you will be entertained and captivated by kitesurfers from across the world. Pure Magic will give demonstrations on the beach, freestyle shows, paddle boarding and kite surfing introductions for newcomers. There will be live music, a Kids Zone, funfair, food village & BBQ plus a Kids Kite Competition. The kidszone will include some fun family amusements: The Gyroscope \u2013 shoreside gravity defying experience, a Bungee Trampoline, Bouncy castles and slides.<\/p>\n

The bands and musicians performing over the weekend are: Elevation Falls, Radio Friendlies, Gangs, Crafty Fuzz, Dirty Epics, Rag Trio, Darragh Cullen.<\/p>\n

The Dublin City Soul Festival is taking place this weekend and – like every year – it will be THE music festival in Dublin that you do NOT want to miss. This great festival takes place for the 7th year and Chris Maher (and team) deserve a huge amount of praise for keeping it going despite significant financial challenges. The main event is the 2-day long Soul Picnic in Merrion Square. Admission is free, but donations (suggested: EUR 5 per person) to the Musical Youth Foundation are hoped for. The first 4,000 EUR 5 doantions will get a free raffle ticket for the Instrumenal Art Raffle (see website).<\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. “Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.<\/p>\n

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Marsians here we come!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Did you hear about “Mars One”? It is a is a private spaceflight project led by Dutch entrepreneur, Bas Lansdorp, to establish a permanent human colony on Mars. The first flight with people in it is planned for 2023, but the application period is in full swing and 78,000 (!!) people have applied for it after just two weeks! Sure, many of us would like to try out a bit of space travel, but there is a little problem with Mars! – It is a ONE-Way ticket.<\/p>\n

There is no way that you will be able to come back to Earth. There is no infrastructure on Mars (i.e. space ship launcher) to shoot :-) you back down to Earth and on top of that the lack of Gravity will have changed your body so much that it wouldn’t be good for you to come back. The flight from Earth to Mars takes 8 months! Are we there yet!!?!?!<\/p>\n
