When you think about it, we are really THREE in this relationship ;-): You – the appreciative audience; the event organisers that work hard to organise and run free events for you to enjoy; and me who does the matchmaking. ;-) Everybody has their part to play and only together we are strong. Many event organisers tell me that their events are largely visited by Dublin Event Guide readers, so maybe you should nudge the person next to you at an event and ask them if they also are part of the Dublin Event Guide Community. …and if not, tell them about it!<\/p>\n

Lots of interesting events are listed in this week’s edition and with the sun making an appearance these days, the outdoor events this weekend (Docklands Festival, Family Play Day, etc.) should provide a lot of good entertainment.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. The Dockland’s Summer Fest and the Family Day (on Sunday) are the events I am looking forward to this weekend. If you are a Rugby Fan, check out the European Champions Village in Merrion Square. Great idea to have a big outdoors screen. On Saturday evening the Discovery Gospel Choir is inviting to an interesting event. Have a look!<\/p>\n

Gardiner Street Gospel Choir – Lift your Voice – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir is one of the best Gospel Choirs in Ireland and it is in existence for more than 13 years now. I am for the last 8 years with the choir and usually look after the technical side. After a lot of work, the choir recorded a great CD, which you can buy online and very soon also in shops.<\/p>\n

We sing every week from Sept to June at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, but to launch this super CD we will have a concert with all the frills ;-) in the O’Reilly Theatre in Belvedere College. Tickets are EUR 15 and all proceeds will go to the Temple Street Children’s Hospital and to Headway, a support service for people with brain injuries.<\/p>\n

It would be great to have all of you come to the concert ;-) and for two of you I managed to get a pair of tickets each. This concert will be epic and you won’t want to miss it! With an 8 piece band replicating the classic Cash, Tennessee Three, Carter Family and Carl Perkins line up. Paul McCann will be recreating the role of Johnny Cash and June Carter’s vocal duties will be performed by Louise O’Reilly.<\/p>\n

Dublinbikes extension – with some surprises<\/h2>\n
\n

The succesful Dublinbikes Scheme is to be expanded significantly from October and by July 2014 there will be a total of 1500 bikes (950 more than now) at 102 bike stations (58 more than now). That is a BIG step forward for this brilliant service. The new stations will stretch to Kilmainham in the West and to the Point Depot \/ O2 in the East. So, really really good news.<\/p>\n

However, there are a number of surprises as well and some are bad surprises: 1) The bike scheme does even after the extension not go North or South of the canals. Understandable – for now – but still a bit disappointing. 2) The yearly rental will DOUBLE. It will be increased from EUR 10 to EUR 20. Yes, EUR 20 is still a good price for that service, but a 100% increase? I would have expected that signing up new users combined with maybe a 50% increase would have been a better approach. 3) There will still be odd pockets in the City that are not very well served. Imagine you are in Grafton Street, where is the nearest bike stand? Why is there no stand at the top of Grafton Street near Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre or at the bottom near Molly Malone?<\/p>\n

But there is one big whopping and amazing surprise that left me speechless. Looking after 1500 bikes at 102 stations requires some vans and a number of people on the street and in some sort of bike “garage”. And then you need some admin people doing the billing and solving the problems that might occur if you have 40,000 or so subscribers. But you don’t have to find customers, sell to them or produce anything. It all boils down to maintenance and administration. Now I am asking you, how much do you think that should cost? Netflix kills the DVD Shops<\/h2>\n

There once was a song called “Video killed the Radio Star<\/a>“. The song is from 1979 and now in 2013 someone could write a song “Netflix killed the DVD Shops” or something similar. During the week Laser DVD Rental in Rathmines announced that they will close and they currently have a DVD sale of EUR 5 per DVD. It seems that the other Laser DVD shop, in George’s Street, will not be affected.<\/p>\n

Xtravision just managed to turn a corner. On 29 April receivers were appointed as the company had run out of credit when a credit insurance was cancelled. Xtravision was in receivership in 2011 and got sorted back then and is now making EUR 1.5m per year with most shops being profitable. Doesn’t sound too bad, right? Well the good news was that the company didn’t close down and the 1023 employees didn’t lose their jobs. Some (9 in the Republic of Ireland) of the 152 stores will be closed, however, which means that some employees will be without a job, but the majority was saved.<\/p>\n

But what is the future? The DVD rental market is collapsing and with faster Internet, Google Play will follow Netflix and others will offer similar services. So I wouldn’t buy shares in Xtravision if they were available. And if I had any, I would use up all my vouchers as soon as possible too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

10 Days in Dublin runs from 04 July to 13 July. Covering arts, comedy, film, music, theatre and spoken word it is the city’s fastest growing Festival and needs volunteers to help make it a sucess.<\/p>\n

Clean Clothes Campaign – Support from most clothes brands<\/h2>\n

The Clean Clothes Campaign, who lobbied all major clothes brands and clothes retailers after the collapse of a factory building in Bangladesh, which killed more than 100 people and injured more than 1000, achieved a big success when Primark\/Penneys signed the “Accord on Fire & Building Safety in Bangladesh”. A majority of clothes suppliers\/brands\/retailers who have shops in Ireland have signed the accord now and the full list is here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The Goethe-Institut presents a solo exhibition of Irish artist Gillian Fitzpatrick, with an accompanying performance at the preview on Wed 08 May (18:00-19:30) in the Goethe-Institut.<\/p>\n

The title of the exhibition Die Welt von Morgen, (\u2018Tomorrow\u2019s World\u2019) is taken from the BBC Television show (1965 \u2013 2003) featuring the latest discoveries and innovations in science and technology. At the height of its popularity in the 1970\u2019s it was drawing audiences of around 10 million each week. In 1975 \u2018Tomorrow\u2019s World\u2019 ran a feature on the German band Kraftwerk. The exhibition Die Welt von Morgen presents a distorted imaginary archive of technological nostalgia inspired by Kraftwerk. The gallery space at the Goethe-Institut seems to be taken over by an obsessive fan of the band trying to create a version of Kraftwerk\u2019s Kling Klang studios in D\u00fcsseldorf. There is also an element of trying to re-create things from memories that have been half forgotten: a neon-sign, a drum machine, a record sleeve and vinyl LPs.<\/p>\n

The Drimnagh Festival is taking place from 17 May. But before I tell you what is happening, maybe I should tell you where Drimnagh is because many might have difficulty pinpointing it. Drimnagh is in Dublin 12, which is surrounded by Dublin 6w, 8, 10 and 24. In Dublin 12 there are also Crumlin, Terenure and Walkinstown.<\/p>\n

The Dockland\u2019s Summer Festival will take place on Sat 18 and Sun 19 May. Organised by Waterways Ireland and The Docklands Business Forum, expect a full programme of entertainment and family fun on the land and water. Including kayaking, paddle boarding, barge rides, dragon boat displays and more. Birdwatch Ireland’s National Dawn Chorus Day is traditionally the day when wildlife enthusiasts the length and breadth of Ireland set their alarm clocks much earlier than usual and go out to enjoy a morning of beautiful birdsong.<\/p>\n

The Dockland\u2019s Summer Festival will take place on Sat 18 and Sun 19 May. Organised by Waterways Ireland and The Docklands Business Forum, expect a full programme of entertainment and family fun on the land and water. Including kayaking, paddle boarding, barge rides, dragon boat displays and more. A complete refurbishment of the Lodge is nearing completion, providing the best in patient support and surroundings for all those who stay there for short and long term care.<\/p>\n

The Round Room of Mansion House will be the venue for the 2-day event “Your Future City – A Showcase of Technology in Action”, where Dublin City will offer you a window to the future, “demonstrating how technological innovation is affecting every aspect of our lives from our homes and gardens to our work, our schools and our city.”<\/p>\n

The showcase will be broken into zones (i.e. home, work, school, city, environment and garden) and each zone will include demonstrations displaying innovation. A workshop by Lego under a roof on the forecourt of the Mansion House will involve people of all ages using Lego to build their vision of the Dublin of the future. A giant interactive social media wall will allow you to view and interact with up-to-the-minute social media commentary on the event and ideas on how Dublin can engage more with digital technology. Naoise O Muiri, the current Lord Mayor of Dublin, is a strong driving force behind Digital Dublin and his office is inviting to this event.<\/p>\n

“Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.<\/p>\n

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Anonymous Event Announcements<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, today’s This is Odd! is a little closer to home than many other topics I mention here. But I just received another one of these Anonymous Event Announcements and it has pushed me over the edge. ;-) I can imagine that you wonder what I mean with “Anonymous” because if it is sent from an e-amil address it is not really anonymous. …and you are right. What I am talking about is an e-mail from a company e-mail address or a non-name related Gmail or Hotmail address that is not signed with a name.<\/p>\n

So let me give you an (invented) example. I receive an e-mail from info@cooleventcompany.ie that tells me about their next super cool free event and asks me to put the information in the Dublin Event Guide. The e-mail is signed with “Regards” or maybe with “Thanks”. No name, no phone number no nothing.<\/p>\n

Now you could say that if all information is in the mail it is not necessary to sign with a name or to give a phone number or anything else. And again you are right. But think about who you deal with, A human being asking another human being for help\/favour or anything like that is typically a LOT more successful than an “anonymous” e-mail arriving in some Inbox. If John or Mary asks you to help them, would you feel a little more enclined to help than if “Thanks” asks you?<\/p>\n

EVERY mail is written by a human being, so why do people hide behind a neutral e-mail address. Does that indicate that you are not really backing the mail that you just sent? Lack of integrity and congruency? Maybe? Either way, I find it ODD!!<\/p>\n
