13,000 LIKES on Facebook now!! That is some number of people! Soon there will be the point reached where more people LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on Facebook than there are people that subscribe to it. This makes sense because there are about 20,000 unique visitors per month using the website and there are 2,000 users of the smart phone version. That’s a hell of a lot of Dublin Event Guide readers! Each and everyone of you is much appreciated and I think of all of you every Thursday & Friday when I write about pages and pages of events. I am glad that we all found got in the Dublin Event Guide community and the high quality competitions show you that event organisers think so too.<\/p>\n

If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

This is a different weekend for me than normally. Because I am taking part in the Gospel Rising Festival in Bray, I do not have a chance at all to go to any events in Dublin. The good news is that you can enjoy many parts of Gospel Rising as well if you like Gospel Music, but there are also LOTS of great event sin Dublin if you have another preference.<\/p>\n

What would I do this weekend? I would definitely go to the People’s Art Exhibition at St. Stephen’s Green on Saturday, then on to some Studios at their Open Door Days for “Visit 2013” and on Saturday evening I recommend you go to the Gospel Rising Main Festival Concert in Bray from 19:00-22:30.<\/p>\n

On Sunday I would listen to the Larkfield Four and the Ukersitic Congress at the Harold’s Cross Festival on Sunday, if possible I would squeez the “Freshly Squeezed” Short Film Festival in, and I would also try to fit in the Sunday Fusion World Market.<\/p>\n

During the week? After that busy weekend, I need some break! :-) So I will let you decide for yourself what you will do after Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Bloom is Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family event and in previous years 90,000 people visited the event. Bloom is a great day out with something planned for all ages; it is a truly unique show, showcasing the finest Irish food, drink and of course horticulture. For any budding gardeners it will provide lots of inspiration and opportunities to pick up some beautiful plants, flowers, seeds and shrubs. Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you\u2019ll get lots of tips on how to start growing at the show. But if gardening isn\u2019t your thing then you\u2019ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the Superb Food Village with plenty of artisan producers; the Best in Season marquees featuring growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Chef’s Summer Kitchen will host live cooking demonstrations from some of Ireland’s much loved chefs including Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Donal Skehan and Rozanne Stevens. With Trim being the nearest place to Dublin for a Hot Air Balloon event, I know that a fair number of people made the trip to Trim in previous years for the Balloon Fiesta. The organisers were not blessed with good weather in the past, so all the nice plans for mass launches never really worked out. For 2013 they have decided to give it a rest and to come back again next year. Let’s hope that in 2014 the weather (around Easter) is perfect for them. Garden is an exhibition by Dublin-based artist Niamh O\u2019Malley. Known for her painting and sculptural interventions and more recently for her explorations of monumental sites, O\u2019Malley is showing a personal landscape using video and sculpture \u2013 the garden which she and her family shape and create with the changing seasons. Featuring a new video installation and a large painting on glass, this landscape will be revealed through screens, mirrors and windows.<\/p>\n

The Goethe-Institut presents a solo exhibition of Irish artist Gillian Fitzpatrick, with an accompanying performance at the preview on Wed 08 May (18:00-19:30) in the Goethe-Institut.<\/p>\n

The title of the exhibition Die Welt von Morgen, (\u2018Tomorrow\u2019s World\u2019) is taken from the BBC Television show (1965 \u2013 2003) featuring the latest discoveries and innovations in science and technology. At the height of its popularity in the 1970\u2019s it was drawing audiences of around 10 million each week. In 1975 \u2018Tomorrow\u2019s World\u2019 ran a feature on the German band Kraftwerk. The exhibition Die Welt von Morgen presents a distorted imaginary archive of technological nostalgia inspired by Kraftwerk. The gallery space at the Goethe-Institut seems to be taken over by an obsessive fan of the band trying to create a version of Kraftwerk\u2019s Kling Klang studios in D\u00fcsseldorf. There is also an element of trying to re-create things from memories that have been half forgotten: a neon-sign, a drum machine, a record sleeve and vinyl LPs.<\/p>\n

They will stay overnight at Portobell and on Sunday from 07:00 they will move to Grand Canal Dock to arrive there before 13:00. The People’s Art Exhibition is a brilliant event that takes place four times every year. The May event this weekend is the first this year. FESTA is an “artistic nuisance” created by visual artist Kathryn Maguire to celebrate the impact and influence the Grand Canal has had on labour and leisure in Rialto and other areas through which it flows. Kathryn has produced floating artworks ‘US’ Again (a floating mirrored shed) and The Exchange (a floating vegetable garden created by the men\u2019s Gardening Group based in St Andrew’s Community Centre using the iconic Dolphin\u2019s Barn bricks).<\/p>\n

FESTA is part of the Inland Waterway’s Dublin Rally on the Grand Canal on Sat+Sun. It also includes a series of events including public talks – the Festa Dialogues – on a barge docked at Suir Bridge on Sat from 14:00, featuring experts in the field of ecology, the built environment and the Grand Canal. Free ticketed boat rides and a nature trail will also take place. All children must be accompanied by an adult.<\/p>\n

On Sunday at 16:00 a spectacle will take place in Grand Canal Dock, when hundreds of origami boats, made by young people from the Canal Communities, will be launched around the floating artworks. Children (aged 10+) are invited to a free workshop at 14:30 at the Waterways Ireland Visitor Centre to make the final origami boats to be included in this launch, all accompanied by jazz musician Nick Roth’s ‘Water Project’.<\/p>\n

HeadSpace is a new not-for-profit writing and art magazine based around mental health. It was founded when a group of young people, some of whom had spent time in psychiatric wards, felt that there was a lack of appropriate reading material available and that if they had the chance to read stories and see art that reflected their own experiences and spoke of hope and recovery they would feel elements of support and solidarity.<\/p>\n

The Inland Waterways Dublin Rally will bring many canal boats into the Grand Canal dock. Boats are to assmeble at Lucan Road Lock on Friday 10 May. Then on Saturday from 07:00, the boats start moving from Lucan to Suir Road and then onwards to Portobello. They will stay overnight at Portobell and on Sunday from 07:00 they will move to Grand Canal Dock to arrive there before 13:00. A number of children’s events are organised for the afternoon at Grand Canal Dock.<\/p>\n

Visit 2013 is taking place on Sat 11 May + Sun 12 May. On that weekend, artist\u2019s studios all over Dublin city will open their doors to everybody. Artists show their creative spaces, their artwork and will be available for you to talk to them.<\/p>\n

11 studios (on the Southside) will open their doors on Sat and a different set of 11 studios (on the Northside) will be open on Sun. The list of studios is on http:\/\/www.visitstudios.com\/visit-information\/<\/a> and there is also a map here<\/a>. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

Jenette Donnelly from Art for Art\u2019s Sake will run two free studio tours going to all 11 studios. The Southside Tour will be on Sat 11 May. Meeting is at 11:45 at Tara Street Dart Station (outside, beside ticket desk) and the tour will end at the IMMA.<\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The fourth Gospel Rising Music Festival is taking place this weekend in Bray. For fans of Gospel Music, this the event of the year. “Words on the Street” is the title of the European Literature Night. Twelve Countries, Twelve Voices, Twelve Venues, One Great Evening is the summary of that night. In Dublin well known Irish people will read contemporary writing from twelve European countries in twelve venues, many of which are unusual and not normally easily accessible to the public.<\/p>\n

Rosaleen Linehan, Naoise O’Muiri (Lord Mayor of Dublin), Eamon Morrissey, Seana Kerslake (IFtA shortlisted), Bryan Murray (actor), Ray Foley (98fm DJ), Rick O’Shea (2fm DJ), Sinead Desmond (Ireland AM), Mark Cagney (Ireland AM) and Niamh Sharkey (Children’s Laureate) will read in places such as Royal College of Surgeons, Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club, Little Museum of Dublin, Constitution Room in the Shelbourne Hotel, Taylor Galleries, Boston College, 6 Ely Place, Loreto College, The Sugar Club, Iveagh House, Newman House and Newman University Church.<\/p>\n

A map and information booklet showing the location of the venues with information about the readers and readings, so that you can move from venue to venue, will be available from libraries in Dublin, Failte Ireland tourist offices, National Library and the venues. [Unfortunately that booklet is not available online. What a pity!)<\/p>\n

The twelve participating countries will each be represented by a short (15 minutes) translated piece of a novel, poem or short story which will be read every 30 minutes so people can wander from venue to venue taking in readings from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain & the UK. The first reading in each venue starts at 18:30 and is repeated on the hour and half hour with the final reading at 21:00.<\/p>\n

Passport Control at Dublin Airport to be ramped up significantly<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today I found an article on rte.ie that explained “Dublin Airport testing ‘self-service’ border control” and when you read through it you find out that “self-service” terminals will replace (some of the) Immigration Officers (also called: garda in civilain clothes that check your passport).<\/p>\n

The article here<\/a> is not taking any sides, but most people might think that a self-terminal is reducing the control process, but think about this: Until about 3 years and for many many years before, you only had to show the OUTSIDE of your passport at Dublin airport and you were waved through. Then a dispute about pay (afaik) meant that the gardai started looking at every passport again, but I would be surprised if they really CHECKED anything. The process is so fast that it is close to impossible to see that something is odd.<\/p>\n

The new self-service terminals will operate differently. They will scan your picture in the passport and will compare that with you in reality. A machine based control is a significantly ramp up of controls, because the machine will be a lot more alert than most Immigration Officers. Oh, and it will also go a LOT slower. Because even with the fastest scanner, the person putting his\/her passport on the scanner will cause the delays. So expect longer queues! I will continue to go to the human being myself if there is a choice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
