You might or might not know that I work through the night (without sleep) on a Thursday night because it takes such a long time to get every Dublin Event Guide out. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This weekend, the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival in Howth is at the top of my list, followed by the Dublin Flea Market on Sunday and then there is the Photofest as well on Sunday. If you are interested in Orchids, check out the event in the Botanic Gardens on Sat+Sun.<\/p>\n

On Saturday afternoon\/evening I might go to the Trocaire Mini-Festival and for a bit of a spectacle check out the Night Run on Sunday evening. During the week, check out the Complaints Choir if you have time during the day. Bealtaine Festival 2013<\/h2>\n
\n

Bealtaine (which was the beginning of summer in Irish mythology) is the name of a yearly festival that celebrates “creativity as we age”. This is a complicated way of saying that it is a festival for older people, but what is “older”? Depending on your age, “older” might be 40 or 50 or 60 or 80… Bealtaine is coordinated by Age & Opportunity, “the Irish national organisation working to promote greater participation by older people in society”. A few years ago, “older” in the context of Bealtaine was defined as above 55 years of age. But I’d say many 90 year olds would find them tooo young and most 55 year olds would still see themselves at young. So I leave the definition to you! :-)<\/p>\n

Important is that during the whole month of May, the Bealtaine Festival will offer everything from dance to cinema and painting to theatre. It showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists and invites you to enjoy this if you are “older”.<\/p>\n

Bus Service to Farmleigh House<\/h2>\n

Last week I reported here about the new and quite pricey “Family Fun Train Service” in Phoenix Park and I mentioned that Phoenix Park is seriously lacking some type of public transport, for example to reach Farmleigh House. Aine G was so nice to let me know that the Dublin Bus No 37 will get you to Farmleigh House. The bus goes to Castleknock, but has a stop outside the Phoenix Park Gates at the top of Chesterfield Avenue. From there it is just a 10-15 minute walk to Farmleigh House. The No 37 buses come every 20-30 minutes, Aine says, and you can catch it on the quays near Ha’Penny Bridge. Very helpful information! Thanks, Aine!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

HMS Illustrious in Dublin port – in “Seasick Green”!<\/h2>\n

A British Royal Navy Aircraft carrier (Helicopters!) has arrived in Dublin Port last night and will stay until 13:30 on Monday. 700 people on board will be on the loose in Dublin. Unfortunately only invited guests will be allowed on board. Aehem…and while here, the ship will be lit in green because “Her arrival in Dublin coincides with \u201cThe Gathering.\u201d Arghh! From long observation in the field through a series of painstaking processes in her studio, Yanny produces these intricate and detailed works. Yanny\u2019s Verre \u00c9glomis\u00e9 panels shed a new light on how we see plants while reflecting the rich history of plant illustration and the ancient techniques of decorative glass. The day starts earlier with a Hill Walk (registration required) and a History of Howth Walk. The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching\/drawing yourself. 10,000 people will take to the streets of Dublin on Sunday evening. You wouldn’t easily find so many to get out to demonstrate for or against something relevant, but it is no problem to find 10,000 to run for 10km on a Sunday night. ;-)<\/p>\n

The route of the race is a little odd and it becomes clear when you look at the map that the organisers struggled fitting 10 km into Inner City of Dublin. The race starts on College Green\/Westmoreland Street. then goes up O’Connell Street for a bit and then down again. After that a bit of the Northside Docklands and – on a zig-zag course – nearly all of the Southside Docklands will be covered. The Finish is a good bit away from the startline on North Wall Quay.<\/p>\n

The run is not free and there doesn’t seem to be any entertainment programme in connection with the run, so the only free involvement is watching and supporting the 10,000 run by.<\/p>\n

If you are in Dublin by car on Sunday. be aware that there will be wide ranging road closures on Dame Street, College Green (18:30-22:00), on Custom House Quay and North Wall Quay (18:00-23:00) and Samuel Beckett Bridge, Cardiff Lane, Macken St, City Quay, Lombard St, Sir John Rogerson\u2019s Quay and Hanover St East (20:45-22:45).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Royal Irish Academy of Music and the Bealtaine Festival have put a call out to \u2018complainers\u2019 and \u2018choirs\u2019 to join forces and be part of Ireland\u2019s first \u201cComplaints Choir\u201d, which will debut on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The people of Ireland were invited to send their complaints to the Bealtaine Festival by February 18th., then the complaints were turned into lyrics for a choral symphony and choirs around the country are learning this new composition of complaint and gather together on 01 May, the first day of the Bealtaine Festival, to perform all that moaning as a work of art on Meeting House Square.<\/p>\n

It’s pity the performance takes place in the middle of the week in the middle of the day, I am sure it would be interesting. Let’s hope for a YouTube clip!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Phizzfest, the Phibsborough Arts Festival, is a community festival in that part of Dublin’s Northside, that entertains locals and everybody else for the last three years with a huge variety of events. Until last year it took place in September and was a week long festival. This year, for the first time, it will take place in May just for one weekend and then there will be other stand-alone events during the year.<\/p>\n

The next lecture in the SFI Speaker Series will be “The upside of risk” with David Spiegelhalter.<\/p>\n

David Spiegelhalter is the Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at Cambridge. He’s also one of the curators of the next exhibition in the Science Gallery, the Risk Lab, which will explore the maths and psychology of probability, chance, and risk.<\/p>\n

As part of the SFI Speaker Series, David will take a behind-the-scenes look at RISK LAB – the themes it explores, the questions it asks, and the science it’s based on. David will talk about his work on the public perception of risk, explaining why the mathematical likelihood of something happening doesn’t necessarily align with the decisions we make about it.<\/p>\n

Why do some people take risks, while others play it safe? How are people triggered into betting against the odds and why does the house always win? We’ll be talking about risk-taking personalities and why some people ignore the maths when they gamble or take chances. We’ll also be looking at the upside of risk – at serendipity and coincidence, as well as the maths and psychology of happy accidents.<\/p>\n

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sorting the problem of the people … and the country … while pocketing more money?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You have heard the breaking news? ATMs across Ireland will soon give out EUR 10 notes! I mean if that is not great news, then I don’t know what is. It will turn the economy around, now that we don’t have to waste EUR 20 but can stick to the EUR 10 on a night out. And it will free the money that was “stuck” in the bank, when you had still EUR 13 on your account but the ATM told you that there are insufficient funds. Amazing news!<\/p>\n

Now you could wonder if the people that this would benefit most even still have their money in their bank account because Social Welfare payments are in cash from the post office for a good few years now. And you could wonder if people that can’t keep EUR 20 in their pocket without having to get rid of the WHOLE amount instead of just half of it, might not have bigger problems that could\/should be solved in a different way? …but I guess that would be much too cynical.<\/p>\n

Ohh, and I am sure either it also has nothing to do with the fact that the banks get fees EVERY time you withdraw money. So if you get EUR 10 twice, they get double than if you get EUR 20 from an ATM.<\/p>\n

Mind you, if I have EUR 13 on my account and can now get the tenner, then I still have EUR 3 stuck in my account. Maybe the ATMs should start giving out 1 Euro coins. Everything else just doesn’t feel right!<\/p>\n

P.S. I know that a very very small number of people will get real and definite benefit from this, but I speculate that that number is so small that the whole development is still just ODD!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
