Hurray, another packed Dublin Event Guide is finished and in your “hands”. Speaking of “in your hands” did you ever try the smart phone version of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)? If you have a smart phone, just type http:\/\/m.dublineventguide.com<\/a> in your browsers’ address bar. But you can also use that link on a normal computer. Check it out at some point, because many find it very convenient to bring the Dublin Event Guide with them when they are out and about on a weekend. Maybe that is the same for you?<\/p>\n

180 events this week and we are still in the pre-season. Can you imagine what that means when we get closer to summer? The good news is, though that there is no change in the number (or quality) of free events in Dublin’s cultural landscape. Less money available doesn’t mean that organisation reduce their events or cancel them altogether.<\/p>\n

Have a look at the Dublin News, there are a few interesting things that I heard about this week. Oh and do you regularly check the Feel Good Slot? Maybe have a look at it this week.<\/p>\n

As you know (or should know), the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is a – very work intensive – spare time occupation that keeps me busy for about 35 hours every week. It is completely free for you, but there are cost of approx. EUR 170 every month that I have to pay.
\nThe cost are mainly for sending it out to you in a reliable way that is not considered spam, because, imagine, I am sending more than 50,000 mails every week!! The EUR 170 either have to come out of my pocket or we spread the burden a little and I do all the work and you help me with a bit of money to cover the cost. http:\/\/www.perfectresults.info\/donate.htm<\/a>
\nMost of you tell me that they found brilliant events that they wouldn’t have found otherwise OR that you saved a good bit of money by discovering sooo many free events in Dublin. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

This weekend, I will probably go to the Ideal Homes Exhibition tomorrow to see what they have this year. The last few Ideal Homes exhibitions weren’t too impressive, you definitely feel that most of the superfluous money is gone. Afterwards, I might have a look at the Record Store Day events in Tower Records and next door in the Madison Nightclub. If you are Vegan, you have to check out the Vegan Bake Sales in the Exchange Dublin and the Live Collision Arts Festival is running a few free events as well.<\/p>\n

If you like Board Games, you have to go to the experts in the Exhange Dublin. They will teach and show you and you have a chance to play new games.<\/p>\n

On Sunday there is an interesting sounding “O’Connell Street Walking Tour” and then there is Saucy Sundays and Sunday Roast again in the evening. Brilliant music events with different bands and performers every week.<\/p>\n

Tuesday is World Book Day (the second one in Ireland this year…check out the Dublin News for an explanation) and the Alchemist Cafe takes place again.<\/p>\n

Following its sold out run last October “The Beatles Show” returns to Dublin for six performances. The show consists of three Beatles-related plays written by Stephen Kennedy: Lennon v McCartney \/ Death and The Beatles Fan \/ John Lennon\u2019s Last Day. In addition there will be songs from The Beatles played live on stage by Vyvienne Long and The Newspaper Taxi Men. Grand Canal Theatre \/ Bord Gais Theatre in receivership<\/h2>\n

The Grand Canal Theatre (that carries its sponsor’s name “Bord Gais Theatre”) and the Point Village were taken over by the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) and a receiver was appointed. The properties were owned by Harry Crosbie who owes allegedly EUR 450 mio to NAMA. Interestingly, the Point Theatre (known by its sponsor’s name as “The O2”) is not included, despite the fact that it is part of the Point Village Complex and was originally also owned by Harry Crosbie.<\/p>\n

It is currently not expected that anything will change for the Grand Canal Theatre, for the Odeon Cinema or the Gibson Hotel. All businesses are run by companies that rented space from Harry Crosbie and it seems that only the buildings are affected by the receivership. So it seems that you don’t have to worry if you have tickets for events in the Grand Canal Theatre, for example.

Oxegen returns<\/h2>\n

It has been announced that the Oxegen music festival will be back this year and will take place on the August Bank Holiday Weekend at the Punchestown Horse Racing Course in Co. Kildare. Two years ago it had a capacity of 80,000, last year it didn’t take place and this year the capacity is reduced to 50,000. “Fun” Train Service for Phoenix Park<\/h2>\n

Phoenix Park is seriously lacking some type of public transport. If you don’t have access to a car but want to get from the Luas to Farmleigh House, it is a very very long walk. In the past a bus service was provided but it got cancelled. Maybe it was not economically viable.<\/p>\n

Now a “Family Fun Train Service”, operated by Irish Tourist Trains, who also run the Castle Express in Kilkenny, has been approved for the Phoenix Park. It will run until end of September 2013. I was wondering what a “Fun” Train Service is. Why is it fun? Is it not a serious service? And it turns out that it is a little tractor (in train disguise) pulled small train for a HUGE price.<\/p>\n

It is NOT a public transport service in the typical sense. The tour is a round trip, starting at Dublin Zoo, going up Chesterfield Avenue, then over to Farmleigh House. The return trip is routed via Ashtown Visitor Centre and will arrive then back at the Zoo. The whole tour takes approx. 30 minutes and is a hop-on\/hop-off tour. Trips will run from 09:00-17:00 Monday to Sunday and leave every 30 minutes.<\/p>\n

If you want to do that with your children as a special event, it might work for you, but in all other cases the price of EUR 18 for a family is prohibitively expensive for most. The price for an adult might be near EUR 6 or EUR 7 and that seems to me to be a huge price to get from the zoo to Farmleigh House. http:\/\/www.phoenixpark.ie\/newsevents\/title,23791,en.html<\/a><\/p>\n

A family ticket (2 adults + 2 children) is \u20ac18, which includes a free 3D map.<\/p>\n

World Book Day – again??<\/h2>\n

Alert Dublin Event Guide reader will be surprised to see that 23 April is World Book Day, because you will remember that I had listed a range of events for the World Book Day on 07 March. Yep, I was surprised as well when I found out that there are TWO World Book Days.<\/p>\n

23 April is a symbolic date in the literary world. On this day in 1616, Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. And since 1995, the UNESCO World Book Day is celebrating reading and publishing on 23 April.<\/p>\n

Oddly the World Book Day is celebrated in Ireland and in the UK on 07 March and allegedly “This date came about after serious thought and lengthy discussion to ensure that we were making the best decision for all participants and our supporters. We take into consideration religious holidays, school terms and potential conflict with other charitable activities.”<\/p>\n

I guess this News, should really be in the “This is Odd!!” section because it is very odd that there are two days. And when you look into it, you find out that 23 April is St. George’s Day in the UK, but why does Ireland care about that??<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Stupid Advertisement Wordings
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Like many of you, I get lots of promotional mails and I am not talking about mails in the context with the Dublin Event Guide, but mails that are just trying to sell me something or get me to do something. They usually are written by marketing people but seemingly more often be just people in marketing roles. ;-)<\/p>\n

Why the implied criticism? Well, if you read a mail and you have a “Doooohhhh!” experience, then you know that the person who wrote it wasn’t in best form when writing it.<\/p>\n

I know you want some examples, right? Well here you go, I have two for you today:<\/p>\n

1) A big-ish exhibition wrote: “Register Now and you can GO FREE Saturday or Sunday (or 2 for 1 on Sunday). Offer Must End.”<\/p>\n

Doooh! Really? The offer must end? Well, when exactly? Maybe after the exhibition? That sentence is unnecessary and stupid. The person writing wanted to create an urgency, but should read up on how to do that properly.
\nAnd another thing; Why is “GO FREE” in capitals? The treatment of the word “free” in mails is a whole other topic and a bug bear of mine, but I will leave that for another time. ;-)<\/p>\n

2) A big event venue that runs many high profile events and is aligned with an energy company sent a mail to their “Rewards” club during the week promoting an event. The event is reasonably interesting but a little unusual. It is a conversation between three people about a subject that got lots of attention a few weeks back, but is now not that riveting anymore. Nevertheless, the admission charge is a significant EUR 20 and the event takes place on a Saturday, which is not necessarily the evening you might want to sit down to listen to a conversation about a (now!) less spectacular topic.<\/p>\n

So why do I mention this event here. Well, the e-mail author wrote:
\n“Due to demand we\u2019re extending our exclusive Rewards Club ticket offer to the end of the week. Simply book your seats through the Rewards Club before 8AM on Friday 19th of April for an amazing EUR 5 discount and get tickets for only EUR 15!”<\/p>\n

So, “due to demand”!? Dooooh! That most likely should read “Due to LACK of demand”! Or has it ever happened that HUGE demand was the reason to reduce the price for longer than initially intended?<\/p>\n

Odd that people don’t think about the meaning of their words.<\/p>\n

Last week on Saturday the temperature was a cool 8 degrees, on Sunday the temperature was nice-ish 15 degrees. That is an increase of 7 degrees over night. If in one night the temperature can jump by 7 degrees, it could jump from 15 to 22 degrees. But 22 is a “hot” summer day for Dublin. So between winter and summer in Ireland it takes only two temperature jumps. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
