What better weekend thatn St. Patrick’s Weekend to reach the big number of 300 (!!!) Dublin Event Guides? Is is not that I am such a fan of St. Patrick’s Day, but it certainly is the ultimate event weekend, so having this celebration for me this weekend is fitting.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

This week’s Dublin Event Guide is packed with St. Patrick’s Day events and I just want to tell you he ones I will go to. I will definitely be at the Big Day Out tomorrow at Merrion Square and maybe at the Gannon Cup at the Liffey.<\/p>\n

On Sunday will probably go to the parade, but not in the O’Connell Street to Dame Street area. It is a waste of time to stand there. Have a look at what I suggest at the event notice AND in the Dublin News. Unfortunately the City Centre does rapidly become a inhospital area already mid-afternoon on St. Patrick’s Day. So I will leave at that point. I just don’t enjoy it when drunks are falling all over the place.Mind you, this year there is Santoria in the former Messrs Maguire, the guys from Sunday Roast have a full programme,, Whelan’s has a great line-up and the Workman’s Club and there is the An Chabaret Craice\u00e1ilte music event in Dame Court. So with so many temptations, I might stay longer in the City Centre than I normally would.<\/p>\n

On Monday I will probably take part in the Treasure Hunt. I did that for the first time last year and it was a lot of fun.<\/p>\n

The Great Hunger by Patrick Kavanagh – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

Peter Duffy will perform The Great Hunger by Patrick Kavanagh in Bewley’s Cafe Theatre. Peter is originally from County Monaghan and has a natural feel for the language and sensibility of the text.
\nFirst published in 1942, the epic poem “The Great Hunger” is one of the classics of Irish literature \u2013 many feel it is Kavanagh\u2019s best work, a masterpiece. It is a long narrative poem set in rural County Monaghan in the 1930s\/early 40s. It concerns the life and struggles of the anti-hero and small farmer Patrick Maguire. An un-sentimental portrait of the life and times, it has echoes of The Great Famine in the title and the text. – After the performance (approx. 1 hr 10 min) there will be a post performance talk \/ Q&A.<\/p>\n

Ray Heffernan & The Grand Canal Band<\/h2>\n

On Sat 09 March Dublin singer-songwriter Ray Heffernan, who is now living in Italy performed with his 7-piece band of Italian musicians, called The Grand Canal Band in the Unitarian Church, at St. Stephen\u2019s Green West. Heffernan\u2019s songs are soulful and really really nice with strong Irish influences but lots more too. He introduced his new CD “New Dress Woven” and I had an opportunity to be at the gig. It was brilliant!! If you get the chance to hear Ray Heffernan and his band anywhere, go for it!<\/p>\n

St. Patrick’s Parade streamed on You Tube<\/h2>\n

RTE is streaming the St. Patrick’s Parade on You Tube. On RTE 1 TV, the parade is shown from 12:20-13:55 and the usually awful programme (turn the sound off! ;-) ) is presented by Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh, Aidan Power and Des Cahill. There is a good chance that the You Tube stream will be the same programme. You will find it on You Tube at http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/rte?feature=watch<\/a> and it will be available worldwide.<\/p>\n

Also on You Tube will be the St. Patrick’s Day event in Aras an Uachterain, the Presdient’s residence. It is a music and arts programme called “Glaoch – The President’s Call” and will be streamed at 21.30 on Sunday. Bono, S\u00e9amus Heaney, Druid Theatre’s Garry Hynes and playwright Tom Murphy and Christy Moore will talk to Michael D Higgins. Farewell to “Messrs Maguire”, welcome to “J.W. Sweetman”<\/h2>\n

The well known pub “Messrs Maguire” on the southside, near O’Connell Bridge on Burgh Quay is gone. The pub is still there, but the name has disappeared. For a while it was known as the “Pub that was once known as Messrs Maguire”, then briefly as “Sweetman & Wolfe” and now the new name has appeared. It is now called “J.W. Sweetman”.The pub continues to be a Microbrewery<\/p>\n

I am regularly surprised about the rename-mania in the Irish pub landscape. If a place is well known and has no bad reputation, why are new owners sp pushed to rename the place?<\/p>\n

According to the Irish Independent, the pub once was owned by now-bankrupt Sean Quinn and was taken over then by the now-liquidated IBRC (former Anglo-Irish Bank).<\/p>\n

It also seems that the neighbouring Q Bar on Burgh Quay is closed since the beginning of this month. More recently it was called Carlisle Cafe Bar, but now the doors are shut.<\/p>\n

Ohh, and another one: Bad Bobs, which was called Purty Kitchen since 1997 and before that it was called ….wait for it…. “Bad Bobs” in Essex Street, next to the Project Arts Centre, is also closed and it seems renovations are ongoing. Maybe “Bad Bobs” is the new (old) name for after the renovation? The old Bad Bobs was sold in 1996 for the astonishing sum of EUR 12 mio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Patrick’s, Padraig’s and Patricia’s – This is your weekend!<\/h2>\n

If you are called Patrick, Padraig, Patricia or carry any other variant of the name “Patrick” as your first name, you are in luck! There are two big inviations for you:

Luckily, though, a rather over-sensitive soul, called Colin Condon, got very very annoyed about the Dublin Bus promotion and that brought the nice offer for Paddy’s to my attention: If you are called Paddy, Patricia or any derivative of Patrick, you can travel on the green Hop-on\/Hop-off bus for free on Mon 18 March and you can also do the South Coast and Powerscourt Gardens Tour for free on Sat 16 March. LiFT Youth Arts Festival – Brilliant Festival in Ballymun for young people<\/h2>\n

The yearly “LiFT Youth Arts Festival” from Wed 20 – Thurs 28 March will take place again – for the 8th time – in Ballymun and if you are in the age range of 10-23 make sure you check it out; or if you have friends\/family members that are in that age group, you should definitely tell them about LiFT.
\nThe main festival is for 13-23 year olds and gives them a chance to see and\/or experience the very best in youth art. The Little LiFT programme is for the 10-12 year olds.

Up to two children can travel for free with each adult who has a valid Luas adult ticket every weekend and Bank Holiday until the end of April and this also applies to the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The St. Patrick\u2019s Festival Ce\u00edl\u00ed will take place on Friday at St Stephen\u2019s Green North, that’s the side where Top Shop, Londis and the 2Euro shop are, near Dawson Street. It is an outdoor celebration of traditional Irish dancing and everyone is invited to take part. Admission is free, just arrive and listen to the traditional Irish music or take part in the dancing.<\/p>\n

It’s a pity that this event does not take place on the Sat, Sun or Bank Holiday Monday so that more people can enjoy it, but hopefully some of you will get a chance to get to it after work on Friday. I haven’t been at the Ceili for a good few years because it has been on a Friday, but before, when it took place on the day of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, I enjoyed the mayhem entirely. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The music seems to only start at 23:00 according to the notification I got and according to the facebook event page at https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/149824501850443<\/a> Going by previous St. Patrick’s Days at 23:00 the majority of people will be far beyond a state where they properly appreciate good entertainment.<\/p>\n

I am also not sure what happens exactly when. The poster on the event page says that the music will start in the afternoon, but the description talks about 23:00? Or do they maybe mean 11:00? As in 11:00am instead of 11:00pm?<\/p>\n

You know what, I will describe it here the way they SHOULD do it:<\/p>\n

The Little Gallery will have St. Patrick’s Day festivities on Sunday starting at 11:00, they will serve Irish dishes and Guinness and Craft Beers. Then in the afternoon once the parade is over, traditional Irish music and other homw grown artists will entertain you, including the folk band “Lynched”, some singer\/songwriter and later DJs. Admission is free and you will have great day.<\/p>\n

That’s what they SHOULD do, Will they? Maybe! Maybe the person writing that text got just a little confused with am\/pm, hours, beer sorts etc. If all goes well … for them, they will have re-written their description when you get this Dublin Event Guide and you will wonder what _I_ am on about. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The official highlight of the St. Patrick’s Day Festival is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It starts at 12:00 on Sunday at Parnell Square, makes its way down O’Connell Street, then on to College Green, Dame Street, Christ Church and finishes near St. Patrick’s Cathedral.<\/p>\n

If you want to be able to see the parade, you have four options a) Be VERY early! IF you are not in the first 3-4 rows along the parade route, you will see hardly anything. b) Bring a ladder! You might be amused by the many people that bring a step ladder, but it is a smart solution. c) Do NOT go to the parade, but instead watch it streamed on YouTube. Check out the information regarding this in the Dublin News section. d) If you are arriving late, have no ladder and ignored the advise to watch it on YouTube, forget O’Connell Bridge or College Green and Dame Street and instead make your way directly to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. There are a lot less people at that end.<\/p>\n

In addition to all the themed vehicles (called “floats”) and the mass of people walking along, there will be 17 Marching Bands taking part this year, so if you can see what is happening, I am sure you will enjoy it. Pity about the thousands of people that won’t be able to see a thing, though.<\/p>\n

By the way, if you read after the parade about the number of people on the streets of Dublin watching the parade, do not beleive a single word. It is all lies. For years the organisers are trying to tell us that more than 500,000 people watch the parade life on Dublin’s Streets, but if you read my claculation from last year her http:\/\/www.joergsteegmueller.com\/2012\/03\/17\/st-patrick-parade-lies-and-statistics-round-2\/<\/a> you will see that the numbers the organisers’ will claim are at least twice as high as the real numbers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A hugely popular event is the yearly Festival Treasure Hunt. It is a free, fun-filled and novel trail through a collection of Dublin’s landmark buildings and venues. Plot your route, solve the clues and race back to base at Dublin\u2019s City Hall to finish and record your time. The event is suitable for all ages and the teams are made up of four people. The clues are quite simple and the difficulty level for the questions would mostly be EASY. If you want to challenged, you might be disappointed, but keep in mind that it is an event for all ages. So the focus is on having a fun day, not on the competitive element.<\/p>\n

You can register from 10:00-13:00 and need to be finished by 17:00. The time for finishing the trail is approx. 2 hours.. Pre-register on the website below so that you don’t waste too much time at the start. Start and finish is in City Hall, Dame Street, Dublin 2.<\/p>\n

I took part in the Treasure Hunt last year and it was a lot of fun. Since there is not much else happening on the Bank Holiday Monday, give it a go and find out a few new interesting facts about Dublin. The theme this year is “Explorers”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Every Monday, starting on 25 February, the SCOOP Foundation will be hosting Jurassic Paradiso, a free Classic Cinema Night for the community. The event, which will be held at the Generator Hostel and will help raise money for The SCOOP Foundation, a locally based charity that helps support children out of poverty in Cambodia and India.<\/p>\n

During the event, attendees can watch a classic blockbuster such as Back To The Future, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Terminator 2, etc. The movie of the week will be voted on before hand on the Facebook page and there will also be featured themed nights.<\/p>\n

Free popcorn will be available and low priced food and drinks can be provided by the Generator Hostel. After the movie there will be a brief movie discussion if you are interested and 2 hours of tunes focused around the movie, it\u2019s genre, and the decade it was made.<\/p>\n

At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.<\/p>\n

Unlimited Broadband until you reach the limit? – Lycamobile<\/h3>\n

Lycamobile is one of the newest mobile service providers and they are spreading like weed and have dubious marketing and advertising practices. It seems their strongest customer base is among the Asian community, but they also appeal to many many other people. I don’t have any experience with their service and can’t judge it therefore, but some of the prices look extremely competitive.
\nWhat I don’t like about them is that they have absolutely no repsect for other people’s property and plaster the City Centre regularly full of posters even on walls that are part of shops or houses and definitely have not agreed to it (a day later you see a poor guy – and not a Lycamobile guy! – scratching the posters off again).<\/p>\n

However, there is one issue that I can’t forgive: Mobile phone tariffs are made complicated on purpose to confuse customers and to make the prices incomparable and then there comes Lycamobile and they tell you that you can have unlimted call minutes (within Ireland), unlimited SMS and unlimited data for just EUR 29. Sounds good, right? But wait, what does it say in the small print? It clearly says “A fair usage of 10,000 MB Data apply.” Wait, which part of “unlimited” did they not get?<\/p>\n

Now you could say that the 10,000 minutes and 10,000 SMS that they limit their service to are not unlimited either and I agree with you, but I reluctantly accept that limit based on the fact that a month has 44,640 minutes and it is for a normal user nearly impossible to use 10,000 call minutes. (Normal user!!!) However, is it possible for a normal user to download 10 GByte per monhg? You bet! It takes a bit of work, but it is possible. The mobile operator Three Ireland, for example sells a plan with a 15 GByte limit. And I managed with my phone without any effort to use 7 GByte in one month over Wi-Fi, so if I hadn’t used Wi-Fi I would be near enough to the Lycamobile limit.<\/p>\n

What surprises me most, is that no Consumer Agency or similar organisation is going after Lycamobile for false and misleading advertisement, because they are essentially saying “You have unlimted data until you reach the limit.” Odd!!<\/p>\n
