Hi all!<\/p>\n

Only two more issues and we have the third hundred filled! So it is time again to tell you a bit about the background (and behind the scenes) of the Dublin Event Guide. Some of you have heard it all before, but with about 50-100 new subscribers every week, many might not know this.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is a spare time passion \/ hobby project of myself and I am Joerg Steegmueller. I live in Dublin for many years and love events. They don’t have to be free, but let’s face it “free” is even better than not free. I went to a number of events in 2006 and 2007 and was repeatedly surprised how few people were at some of these high-class events. Friends told me that they didn’t know about the events and so I decided to send an occasional mail to about 10 friends to share with them what events I found out about. The first few mails only contained one single weekend event, but then I realised that there is a huge amount of free stuff going on and no other publication reliably reports about them. So I continued writing this e-mail and the 10 friends sent it to more people. So the list grew and grew and grew and now 5.5 years later we are more than 13,400 people in this Dublin Event Guide community. Some radio and a TV appearance and a Facebook helped to spread the word and lots more ideas are in the pipeline.<\/p>\n

The weekly e-zine has grown in readers and I come across more and more events and it is still a one-man effort. It is not a one-man enterprise, though. What I mean with that is that the “Dublin Event Guide” is not a commercial enterprise. All the work that I do on it (35+ hours every week) is done as a labour of love and I don’t make any money from it at all. The donations I am asking you for every week are purely to cover the cost of sending 50,000 e-mails every month through a professional Email Service Provider.<\/p>\n

Because I have to pay bills as well, I have (to have) a day job and that limits my time. As a consequence I write the Dublin Event Guide from around 19:00 on a Thursday evening for about 24 hours NON-STOP. And non-stop means exactly that: I do not sleep at all on a Thursday night, but work through the night. As soon as the e-zine is finished I send it out. But unfortunately that often is quite late on Friday and regularly some of you ask me if I could not send it earlier. I would love to, but (unless someone wants to pay me for the freedom to work a day less in my day job) I can’t see yet how I will be able to.<\/p>\n

So the 35 hours is my bit, then last year a super company turned the crude looking Dublin Event Guide in a pretty product: The great people at iQ Content (www.iqcontent.com) created a fancy layout and a super cool mobile phone web app and everything that goes with it. And the third ingredient to the delicious Dublin Event Guide cake is you! \u2026or rather your help. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

The Adult Learners Festival continues for another day and tomorrow (Sat) there are two events that you might be interested in. The first one is a Storytelling Workshop and the second is Arabic classes for Beginners. Have a look at the programme of Open Learning Ireland under the Learn Something – Share Something headline. Also on Saturday I recommend the Print Museum Demonstration Day. If you are into second-hand clothes, have a look at the French Vintage Clothes Sales,<\/p>\n

On Sunday the Pure Vintage Fair and the Little Green Gallery Fundraiser Market deserve a mention.<\/p>\n

During the week, I will consider going to the Green Drinks on Tuesday or to the Open Mic Idea Jam also on the same night. If you have time on Wednesday, look at the First Wednesday event and in the evening at the Rose Pawn Shop Gig in Whelan’s.<\/p>\n

And then there is the Word Book Day on Thursday, the International Women’s Day on Friday and also on Friday is the National Business Expo, especially for people that work on start-up ideas.<\/p>\n

Collaborations Festival Theatre Performance – Tickets Competition<\/h2>\n

The Collaborations Festival is an upcoming festival for writers and performers. Participation at the festival is by applicaton\/invitation only and as part and product of the festival there will be performances in the Smock Theatre and two other adjacent venues. Non of the performances are free, so I won’t be able to include them in the Dublin Event Guide. But Colm McDermott, the producer of the theatre piece “The Secret Art of Murder” made a piar of tickets available for a show where “The Secret Art of Murder” and also “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Garda\u00ed” will be performed.<\/p>\n

“Check your Taxi Driver” App<\/h2>\n
\n

A new smartphone app has been launched by the National Transport Authority to check the taxi driver before you enter a taxi. The app is available for free for Android and iPhone and can be downloaded in the respective app stores by searching for “Driver Check”. To use the taxi driver check app, you just have to enter one detail: car registration number, licence number (on roof-signs and doors) or driver licence number (on the driver’s ID card) and you will find out all other details, including a picture and the name of the driver. You can also scan a QR code on the front and rear windscreens of the car. If the information is not accurate or if the driver is not in the database you can report the driver from within the app.<\/p>\n

For your protection and security, the app gives you the opportunity to send the details (but without the photograph) via e-mail to a friend. Not all drivers are registered yet (currently about 70%) but there will be a fine of EUR 40 if they don’t register.

The Big Egg Hunt 2013<\/h2>\n

Just in case you didn’t see this yet, I will leave it here one more week. I saw some eggs last weekend and some of them are really cool.<\/p>\n

From Tues 12 Feb until Easter Saturday (23 March), Dublin will become home to the biggest Easter egg hunt and street art display. It will be in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation and is sponsored by Lily O’Brien’s.
\nOver 100 fibre glass eggs, will be “hidden” around Dublin, each one of the eggs is 75 cm high and will be decorated by well known artists. The eggs will go on display on Pancake Tuesday for 40 days and 40 nights, but the locations of the eggs will not be revealed.
\nYou have to find them! Get the family or your friends involved in the Big Egg Hunt. You only have to find 20 eggs. Each egg has a code with which you can enter the draw for a grand prize (Diamonds, chocolate factory visit for kids and a year’s supply of chocolate from Lily O’Brien’s).
\nAt the end of the Big Egg Hunt, the eggs will be auctioned for charity in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation. The online auction will already begin on 12 February with a live auction at the Four Seasons Hotel on 23 March.

A friend of mine is involved with the Chester College in Santiago de Compostela in the North of Spain, The Chester College is running English classes for Spanish children and teenagers in the summer and they are looking for a music teacher who would be interested to teach there for 4 weeks in July. This gathering is the signature event organized by D.U.S.T (Dublin Unit for Speculative Thought), an art\/theory collective recently founded. The primary aim of DUST is to stage conversations between disparate groups of people – artists, aestheticians, philosophers, non-philosophers, theorists -who find themselves at the fringes of academic institutions and disciplines and who are also broadly interested in speculative realism and post-continental philosophy.<\/p>\n

The talks throughout the day vary widely, but they have in common that many of us will feel left out. A typical title of one of the talks is “Toward a Phenomenology of (Xeno)archaeology”. Clear? Have a look at the website to find all other details.<\/p>\n

During the day, parents and children will have an opportunity to \u2018try out\u2019 a range of instruments, in order to see, hear and feel the instrument they wish to learn to play. Expert tutors will demonstrate the instruments and answer any questions that parents and students might have. So whether you want to find out what’s the best age for your child to start music lessons, or which instrument would suit you, DIT staff will be delighted to help you with any questions that you might have.<\/p>\n

In addition, throughout the day visitors can enjoy individual and ensemble performances by current Conservatory students of all ages.<\/p>\n

The Conservatory offers a great range of learning opportunities at its Junior Conservatory: the Kids’ Club is open to children as young as three, while the Music Workshop caters for five to seven year olds. Seven to eleven year olds interested in learning how to play a wind instrument may start in the Recorder Class Applications for study at the Junior Conservatory and adult part time study for the 2013-14 Academic year are now open.<\/p>\n

This gathering is the signature event organized by D.U.S.T (Dublin Unit for Speculative Thought), an art\/theory collective recently founded. The primary aim of DUST is to stage conversations between disparate groups of people – artists, aestheticians, philosophers, non-philosophers, theorists -who find themselves at the fringes of academic institutions and disciplines and who are also broadly interested in speculative realism and post-continental philosophy.<\/p>\n

The talks throughout the day vary widely, but they have in common that many of us will feel left out. A typical title of one of the talks is “Toward a Phenomenology of (Xeno)archaeology”. Clear? Have a look at the website to find all other details.<\/p>\n

In autumn of 1949, close to 30,000 people were drawn to the Traberhof in Rosenheim (Germany) daily. Newspapers, radio and television reported: \u201cIt is beyond reason. Bruno Gr\u00f6ning heals the crippled, the blind, the deaf…\u201c
\nToday the Circle of Friends of Bruno Gr\u00f6ning continue his work and spreading the word about his healings through screenings of the documentary.<\/p>\n

The event runs from 11:00-17:30 and it says “including 2 intermissions”. Checking what that means, I found that the documentary is in three parts and is 282 minutes (!!) long. Wow, that’s 4 hours and 40 minutes!<\/p>\n

The Irish Wildlife Trust Dublin Branch continues with their monthly Green Drinks Dublin meetings on the first Tuesday of every month, where like minded people discuss green issues. This month come along and find out about two of the Irish Wildlife Trust\u2019s key campaigns for sustainable seas and an end to the cull of Irish badgers.<\/p>\n

Sustainable Seas: There has been significant progress towards ending overfishing since the IWT first started the Sustainable Seas campaign in 2010 but lots more needs to be done. P\u00e1draic Fogarty, IWT Campaigns Officer, will give some background to the problem, what has been achieved so far, and what needs to be done to reach the goal of a healthy marine environment.<\/p>\n

Ireland\u2019s Badgers \u2013 fighting a losing battle? – The war on BovineTb (Btb) has always been an emotive issue. It has pitted farmers and conservationists against each other since Btb was first discovered in badgers in the early seventies. Hear Fintan Kelly explain the campaign and conflict, Ireland\u2019s total disregard for the Bern convention, the failure of the Bern Standing Committee to carry out its mandate to protect the badger, and how the issue is being tackled by our nearest neighbours.<\/p>\n

“Butoh dance is a non-representational dance of which movements stem out from visualization and internal movements.

Parents\/guardians and their children aged between 18 months – 5 years are invited to The Culture Box for an exciting adventure into creative arts activities for under 5\u2019s. This programme of activity encourages children and their guardians to have fun while learning through the arts. Each session will explore a variety of creative and playful elements that include storytelling, movement, painting, building, creative investigation, music making, exploration of colours and shapes, drawing and so much more.<\/p>\n

There is no fee mentioned, so it seems to be a free event, but booking is required because only limited places are available. You cannot leave your child unattended, but get a chance to play too! All sessions start at 11:00 and have a duration 1 hour.<\/p>\n

Labour Party Minister hurts his voters and sides with the rich<\/strong><\/p>\n

The previous government was bad and we all thought that it can only get better, but it is amazing how incompetent and useless the majority of the Irish politicians are. Many were hoping that the Labour Party would give a social component and a balance to the policies of Fine Gael, but then Pat Rabbitte became Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and he just seems to screw up everywhere.<\/p>\n

I had hoped that a Labour Party Minister would be a little more careful with Ireland’s Natural Resources, but identical to his Fianna Fail predecessor Rabbitte just gave licenses for oil and gas away for nothing, squandering the few resources that Ireland has and giving them as a present to big commercial companies. But if you thought that was enough of a screw-up you were wrong. Rabbitte, who is also responsible for RTE and is in charge of the TV licence re-organisation is again showing his incompetence. I dare to say that apart from the job holders, nobody thinks the ridiculous salaries in RTE for people like Pat Kenny, Marianne Finucane, Ryan Tubridy, Joe Duffy etc are justified. Nobody apart from the people themselves AND Pat Rabbitte. Because instead of sorting out RTE, reducing their budget and forcing them to justify their existence, he wants to give them MORE money.<\/p>\n

The TV licence fee should be a thing of the past. It might have had its justification when the TV and radio stations were not commercial entities, but RTE is as commercial as TV3, just that RTE delivery in a lot of aspects even worse quality. So, the TV licence fee should be reduced or abolished OR if it stays in place then ALL TV and Radio stations should be allowed to apply for part of the funds and get fair subsidies. It is ridiculous that each household is financing a commercial Radio and TV station with EUR 160 per year.<\/p>\n

But it comes worse! People that can’t afford licence fee and cable TV charges etc currently have the option not to have a TV and then don’t need to pay. Rabbitte wants to change that. Probably from around middle of this year he wants to force everybody to pay a “Broadcast fee”. And all that money goes exclusively to RTE! So even if you never in your life watch RTE or listen to RTE, you will have to pay them a minimum of EUR 160 per year. The justification that Rabbitte uses is that we don’t need to have TV anymore to watch RTE. But has he not realised that young generations are not interested in RTE in its current form anymore?<\/p>\n

Now, who are the people that currently don’t pay the licence fee and will have to pay it in future? The majority is people that have limited financial means. The rest has a TV and already pays the licence fee. So the Labour Minister has left his social principles and ideologies in the cupboard and instead sides with the rich and overpaid in RTE. Odd!!<\/p>\n

Interestingly RTE has estimated that up to 15pc of households do not pay the TV licence fee \u2013 even though 99pc of houses allegedly have a TV. So that means the government is incapable of getting the money and for that reason they a new fee is introduced. If the RTE figures are right, then Rabbitte’s argument that the new fee is needed to capture the people that have no TV is a lie. He even claims even those without a TV, benefit from “publicly-funded, public service broadcasting”. Nonsense!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
