Dublin City is making a big effort. Not only in running the city as good as they can on a daily basis, they are also doing their best to use\/endorse\/promote new services to provide better services.<\/p>\n

The recent launch of the Dublin Free Wifi is one of the initiatives, it might be more beneficial for visitors, but we all can benefit from it too. The announcement of a significant the new phase for Dublin Bikes is another good initiative (see Dublin News section for more details). And in recent weeks I got invited to contribute to the discussions about a rejuvenation and renovation of the Dublin City website ( http:\/\/www.dublincity.ie<\/a> ), another good project, albeit long overdue.<\/p>\n

We users are often unhappy about the slowness of innovation and I am of the opinion that Dublin desperately needs a Chief Innovation Officer, but I am witnessing that Dublin City and in a lead role, the current Lord Mayor Naoise O’Muiri, are trying to do their best.<\/p>\n

But I am also witnessing that it can be a tough task to get the ball rolling. So, if you feel strongly about one or more issues, let the people in charge know about it.<\/p>\n

One issue that came up in recent weeks (and it has nothing to do with Dublin City – at least initially) is the future of a lesser known but extremely interesting and pretty museum in Dublin. The museum “No 29 Merrion Square” is in danger! It is a Georgian House Museum that is owned by the ESB and seemingly the ESB would like to see it go. Read the details in the Dublin News section in this e-zine!<\/p>\n

I will take the opportunity to go to the Science Gallery to see the fascinating new exhibition and might go to the Brocante Market on Sunday. No 29 Georgian House Museum in serious danger<\/h2>\n
\n

Do you know the wonderful Georgian House Museum, No 29 in Fitzwilliam Street? When the ESB built their totally ugly headwuarter building in Fitzwilliam Street, they knocked down many many historic Georgian Houses.<\/p>\n

To make up for that big damage they agreed to leaving the house at 29 Lower Fitzwilliam Street intact and to turn it into a museum. Since 1991 it was a wonderful resource in our City that reminded us of the Dublin home life in the period 1790 to 1820. http:\/\/www.esb.ie\/no29<\/a><\/p>\n

Very dedicated, enthusiastic and knowlegeable tour guides were leading the tours through the house and answered all questions. I was in No 29 at least three times and still discovered interesting new things.<\/p>\n

Visiting the museum was normally EUR 6 per adult, but on special days like Culture Night or Open House access was free and the house was packed.<\/p>\n

On 20 Dec the house was closed for maintenance and conservation work and was meant to re-open on 22 Jan, but in a shocking development it seems that just before the re-opening all employees were told that they will all lose their job and the house will not re-open. It would be shame to keep this wonderful museum closed and even re-opening without the tour guides wouldn’t be the same. The building is quite narrow, so self-guided tours might not be the best idea in there.<\/p>\n

Currently I am not sure what the status is, but I am inviting you to check it out yourself and to talk to people about it and ideally also to sign the petition some former employees put together at http:\/\/www.causes.com\/actions\/1725940-keep-number-29-georgian-house-museum-open<\/a> The petition seems to runout of time (only one day left) and might not be the most effective way but I will see what can be done and will update you next week. In the meantime spread the word and also talk to other people in media etc. No 29 is too precious and nice to let it die!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Big Dublin Bikes Extension<\/h2>\n
\n

It was already in the news last week, but in case you haven’t seen the good news yet, I want to tell you:<\/p>\n

Dublin’s hugely successful Dublin Bikes scheme will get an injection of EUR 2.6m to extend the scheme significantly. The scheme will be extended to the East and the West and will span from Heuston Station to the Docklands once the extension is completed in 2014. There will be 59 additional stations and hopefully some of the existing stations will be extended. Imagine, 90,000 people have subscribed to the scheme, that is an amazing number! The Bohemyth – Online Literary Journal<\/h2>\n

Alice Walsh told me about an online literary journal she is the Editor for and I will just let her introduce the Bohemyth to you:<\/p>\n

The Bohemyth is a Dublin based online literary journal, we publish short fiction (short stories, personal essay and flash fiction) as well as beautiful photography on a weekly basis. We are open to submissions all the time. Sometimes we run special themed issues too, for example we had a James Joyce issue and a Christmas issue and in March we are going to have a Beat Writers’ issue to celebrate the birthday of Jack Kerouac, for this we are looking for short stories, flash fiction, personal essays and photography inspired by, referencing, associated with or somehow connected to the writings of the Beat Generation. The Big Egg Hunt 2013<\/h2>\n

From Tues 12 Feb until Easter Saturday (23 March), Dublin will become home to the biggest Easter egg hunt and street art display. It will be in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation and is sponsored by Lily O’Brien’s.
\nOver 100 fibre glass eggs, will be “hidden” around Dublin, each one of the eggs is 75 cm high and will be decorated by well known artists. The eggs will go on display on Pancake Tuesday for 40 days and 40 nights, but the locations of the eggs will not be revealed.
\nYou have to find them! Get the family or your friends involved in the Big Egg Hunt. You only have to find 20 eggs. Each egg has a code with which you can enter the draw for a grand prize (Diamonds, chocolate factory visit for kids and a year’s supply of chocolate from Lily O’Brien’s).
\nAt the end of the Big Egg Hunt, the eggs will be auctioned for charity in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation. The online auction will already begin on 12 February with a live auction at the Four Seasons Hotel on 23 March.

As a part of Inside Out Global Street Art Action, 8 black and white photos will appear on a wall at that location and there is a possibility that some more will appear on the opposite wall. They are from a group of photography students who are coming from different countries, backgrounds and ages and who want to highlight their differences and also similarities by participating in teh Inside Out Project. http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/479414192122023<\/a><\/p>\n

The Inside Out Project is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world. These digitally uploaded images are made into posters and sent back to the project\u2019s co-creators, for them to exhibit in their own communities. People can participate as an individual or as part of a group. Posters can be placed anywhere, from a solitary image in an office window, to a wall of an abandoned building, or in a full stadium. These exhibitions will be documented, archived and be made available online at

Drive-in Cemetery – Mulhuddart Graveyard Madness<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sometimes you might think you have heard it all, nothing can amaze you anymore and you have heard or even experienced all the weirdness and oddness there can be\u2026and then you get whacked over the head with another incredible story: This time the odd story is about Mulhuddart Graveyard!<\/p>\n

Some of you might think that a graveyard is there to accommodate dead people, that it is a quiet and respectful place and that it reminds you more of a park than anything else. Sure, they say in Fingal County, but we NEED to drive around in the graveyard, otherwise the world will come to an end and the health of the nation is in danger!<\/p>\n

Read these snippets from the Northside People free-sheet from 11 Feb (http:\/\/www.dublinpeople.com\/article.php?id=2085&l=100 ):
\n“A NORTHSIDE priest said he would fear for the health and safety of his parishioners if Fingal County Council goes ahead with plans to close vehicular access to a local cemetery. Fr Liam McClarey highlighted his concerns in relation to Mulhuddart Graveyard, which the council wants to close to cars on Sundays, the busiest day for visiting.”<\/p>\n

This priests thinks that not being able to drive to the grave will be a serious risk: “A parishoner who was visiting the graveyard suffered a heart attack and died in the cemetery two years ago,” he said. “God forbid if something like that happens again. How would the emergency services access the graveyard?”<\/p>\n

Aehem, how? In the same way as they get to other areas where they can’t drive to, maybe? On foot? Or maybe we should have a helicopter permanently hovering over the graveyard in Mulhuddart so that the heart attack victims can all get rescued immediately!<\/p>\n

The priest has other serious concerns: “Given the age profile of our parish and how there are many young babies and children in the graveyard, it will only add to the grief of parents.” So if they can’t drive to the graves there grief will be worse? And he goes on “Are older people expected to walk great distances to visit the grave of their loved one, which will undoubtedly be more difficult in the cold and wet weather?”.<\/p>\n

Actually that’s how it is done at Glasnevin Cemetery! And I never heard anyone complaining about it and suggesting to build a road network through the graveyard in Glasnevin. And against the cold and wet weather on the graveyard, I guess we should build a roof over it, wallsa round it and then put some good heaters in there!<\/p>\n

Well, we all now some senile and “far-removed” priests and maybe this priest is just a little disconnected from the world. But why the heck is the Northside People going along with it!? And why, oh why is the local TD, Patrick Nulty (Lab), also so seriously worried. He says cryptically “[\u2026] we must take account of important family occasions like Mothers\u2019 or Fathers\u2019 Day which fall on a Sunday. For many families Sunday is the only day they can visit a grave due to work and other commitments and with young children a car is essential.” I see how in times when not everyone had a car the world collapsed! And I also see that people without cars obviously can not survive in this world where we all need a car\u2026.to drive around on a graveyard.<\/p>\n

And the reason for the restrictions that are only in place on a Sunday? That’s what the Northside People writes: “According to Fingal County Council, the proposed restriction to vehicular access is designed to tackle anti-social behaviour in the graveyard and the vandalism of headstones.”<\/p>\n

So the vandalism only happens on Sundays and is caused by car owners? :-o<\/p>\n

Are they all bonkers in Fingal County? They certainly are very very odd! ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
