One month in 2013 already gone and we didn’t even blink. Are you still on track with your goals? If not, just use the opportunity on the 1st of a new month to renew or re-start them! It is never too late and it was something you were determined to achieve, wasn’t it? So, just start again or if you were so good to keep at it, keep it up!<\/p>\n

As far as the Dublin Event Guide is concerned, we are on track. The subscriber numbers are rising continuously and I am working on some new ideas to enhance it even further. In the meantime, I need your help. It can easily happen that some of the Regular Events are not up-to-date anymore, but I can’t check all of them every week, so if you come across anything in the Dublin Event Guide that needs changing\/correcting\/modifying, just drop me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com to let me know. And if you go to events, tell the people who run it that you heard about their event in the Dublin Event Guide. As long as it is free, it should be listed here and if it isn’t, you can “educate” event organisers by telling them that they should contact me.<\/p>\n

The event website landscape is currently in a very unhealthy state. Websites that were once quite good or very good are in total disarray or are discontinued. www.dublinevents.com is a total mess. www.dublinks.com is long gone. www.dublintown.ie is only used by a handful of event organisers. www.dublin.ie is not what it was either. So event organisers really have difficulties to get the word out. If their event is free, I am here to help. If it isn’t a free event, the opportunities are limited.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. Check out the Temple Bar Designer Market (Sat). It is back the for the first time after Christmas. In the RDS a Sport and Fitness show is taking place and tickets are free (Sat + Sun). On Sunday the Pure Vintage Market in Dublin 8 and Kickstart 2013 in Dun Laoghaire are good places to go. Sunday evening is American Football Superbowl (and I mention that because it is less accessible to many than the normal everyday sports like Rugby and GAA). If you want to watch it in a pub make sure you check if the pub shows the WHOLE game and – unless you want or get something extra for it – you shouldn’t have to pay an admission charge if you choose the right place.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of events during the week as well, but I leave you to search through them on your own.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Croation director Niksa Eterovic is fascinated by James Joace and has been working on his James Joyce Cycle “Ulysses or the Cyclops and his Rhinoceroses” since 2006. After staging four parts of the cycle in Berlin, Granada and Kathmandu, Dublin now has the pleasure to see three cycles in the Samuel Beckett Theatre and O\u2019Reilly Theatre. Sencity – Multi-Sensory Music Event – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

Sat 09 February: 21:00-03:00 – RDS Concert Hall, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4<\/p>\n

Sencity is a multi-sensory music event where the audience cannot only hear but also feel, see, smell and taste the music \u2013 anybody is enabled to capture the music’s passion, diverse emotions, vibes and lyrics through different channels. Created and celebrated by people with and without hearing abilities. Sencity will be in Dublin for the first time. This unique multi-sensory live music event will take place on Sat 09 Feb in the RDS Concert Hall.<\/p>\n

The organisers are not a big, sterile company, but five extremely enthusiastic and hard-working Germans who all studied in Holland and experienced this event there for the first time. They are working with a team of 16 deaf and hard of hearing young people from Dublin to make SencityDublin happen.<\/p>\n

There will be live artists (Signmark, Kormac’s Big Band, The Wonder Villains, Torann Drums and Gavxmas), “aroma jockeys” who intensify the feeling of the songs performed with fitting scents, “food jockeys” who create sensations that impart what the music could taste like, make-up artists, masseurs, hair dressers and many more. The senses are fired up by laser and light shows that turn songs into colours, shapes and pictures. On stage, there are sign dancers translating lyrics and emotions into Irish Sign Language and one of the most exceptional features is the vibrating dance floor which responds to the music\u2019s bass frequency. – Sounds like an amazing event!<\/p>\n

At the next “We Are Electronic” event at POGO in The Twisted Pepper, Shifted is over from Berlin to headline The Basement with Sunil Sharpe as support! And to make things even more interesting, the night is starting with a Dublin jazz band called “Butter” in The Stage who do covers of D’Angelo, J Dilla, Bilal, Slum Village, Radiohead, Massive Attack and R Kelly. They will be followed by a dj set by Louis Scully [Discotekken] and the headlining act will be Alias Empire (previously called Dry County)!<\/p>\n

Dublin Free Wifi – The Good, the Bad and the Odd!<\/h2>\n
\n

Dublin Free Wifi was launched on Thursday and this is first of all a good thing. The service will provide 512 kbit\/s of download speed and 128 kbit\/s upload speed, so it is not fast, but it will do the job for normal web browsing and checking of your e-mails. In about 2-3 weeks time, there will be 12 locations in Dublin that will provide the service (currently there are only 4. That’s ok as well. The other good thing is that is is completely free and unlimited. 24 hours a day every day, with no download volume limitations. That is a really good thing.<\/p>\n

So will we all be able to use free Wifi in the City Centre now? Nope! First of all most of us don’t need it! If you have a smartphone, you will have some type of data contract with your mobile phone service provider, so why would you need a slow-ish Wifi service that is only available in a small number of locations. Ahh, ok, so it is for tourists? Yes, in essence it is a service that will MAINLY serve tourists.
\nBut is it where the tourists are? No!! Barnardos Square, Smithfield or the Amphitheatre behind Dublin Civic Offices are definitely not tourist hot spots. They are 3 out of 4 of the initial locations. Here are the areas: https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?msid=207412753852399977177.0004d456fb28076ba3cb0&msa=0<\/a> Interestingly St. Stephen’s Green will NOT be part of the final roll-out, but Merrion Square will be. Clarendon Street (where you will never find a tourist, unless by accident) is part of the second phase, but only a very small area in Temple Bar is in it. No Wifi either at College Green or Kildare Street.<\/p>\n

So, if the areas are so limited, can we then expect that soon a Phase 3 will cover more areas? No!! The current contract does NOT provide for more than these 12 (very limited areas) and a new contract would be a good bit down the road.
\nIs the speed at least good? Yes, I tried it out and reached close to 500 kbit\/s, but that was on the first day.
\nCan lots of people use it? Yes and no. I heard that up to 150 people can use the service per hotspot, that is not a bad number if you just consider 150 tourists standing on the street. In Grafton Street it could be tight and also in Merrion Square at times, BUT there is a big other problem. Everybody living along the covered area, can use the Wifi service for free permanently as well and in some areas, I could imagine that the people living there will easily fill the 150 spots and then there is no space left for the tourists.<\/p>\n

You said there are a few odd things? Yes! Go to the website to register and you will definitely realise that the company who runs the service is Spanish (they are called Gowex) and has not bothered to adjust the web environment to Irish circumstances. If you want to change any personal data, you HAVE to enter your NIF (the Spanish personal identification number), nobody has it here, so you can’t change or correct your details.
\nWhat else? The people in charge in Dublin City decided to give it a fancy name and called it “Dublin Free Wifi”, well it is exactly that, but that name is not very inspired. And the font for the name? Coarse 1985s pixels. A modern service with all attributes that remind you of technology from more than 25 years ago!!<\/p>\n

There are some icons chosen as well to represent certain areas. Look at them here http:\/\/www.gowex.com\/en\/free-wifi\/promotions\/<\/a>I know, I can’t recognise anything either. Badly pixelated and awful looking. Interestingly, though, and I have to admit that: When you use a mosaic version of the icons, they don’t look too bad. The Inside Out Project is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. On 14 Feb is not only Valentine’s Day, but also V-Day, a world wide event and global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. www.vday.org<\/a><\/p>\n

The theme is “One Billion Rising” and a Flashmob dance event is planned in Grafton Street and Dun Laoghaire for that day. I know it takes away a bit from the Flashmob if it is widely announced before, but “only” 13,000 people get the Dublin Event Guide of 1.5 mio people in the Greater Dublin area, so I think mentioning it here will rather help than damage the event.<\/p>\n

A good Flashmob needs to be practised and rehearsed and since it is a dance routine, you need to know what to do. The Super Bowl, the American Football final will take place on Sunday and it is the biggest sproting event in the USA and even in Ireland there are lots of people that are interested in it, including myself.<\/p>\n

You will be able to watch it on TV: In addition to PayTV stations, BBC Two will show the game live. The programme will start at 23:00 and the Kick-off is at 23:30 (the game will have a duration of 3-4 hours!) but there are also a number of pubs that will screen the game and the pubs promise that – despite the late finish – they won’t kick you out before the Super Bowl is over.<\/p>\n

The two pubs that I found that definitely will show the full game are the Woolshed in Parnell Street (next to Cineworld) http:\/\/www.woolshedbaa.com\/dublin\/whats-on\/us-sports\/<\/a> and Sinnotts in South King Street (opposite of the Gaiety Theatre) https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/458423934206513\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free in both pubs, but be prepared that they will be VERY busy and you might not get in if you arrive too late. Sinnotts already start the night at 20:00.<\/p>\n

The Mercantile will also show the game ( https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/411819918902984\/<\/a> ), but I wasn’t able to find a confirmation that it will be the FULL game. The problem for some pubs might be that with a kick off at 23:30, the game could finish around 03:00 or even 03:30 and that is way beyond the normal Sunday pub closing time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 2013 the Chinese New Year starts on Sun 10 Feb and the new year is called the Year of the Snake. Dublin celebrates the Chinese New Year since 2008 and the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival (DCNYF) showcases the best of Sino Irish Culture in Ireland.<\/p>\n

There will be a Chinese Film Festival in the Lighthouse Cinema, a business seminar, Taste of China events, a children’s programme, lectures, an art exhibition, a concert and the main event for everybody will be the Chinese New Year Carnival on Sun 10 Feb. A good few events are not free, but there are a number of free events and some of them require you to book tickets. Children’s Programme<\/strong>
\nThere are a number of events for children in the Libraries in Dublin, in the Chester Beatty Library and in the Hugh Lane Gallery. Most need no booking and all are free, but there is the Silk Worm Club in the Chester Beatty Library on Sat 09 Feb (14:00-15:30) where children (6-11) can make traditional Chinese decorations and there are only 20 places. This is unfortunately not an event for everyone. Instead it is an Arts Festival for all students of Trinity College Dublin. But since there are more than 16,000 students in TCD and because many (but by far not enough!) The Trinity Arts Festival runs from 04-08 Feb and unites all arts-related soceities in TCD. There will be lots of workshops, tours, talks, concerts and exhibitions. There will be a Chinese Film Festival in the Lighthouse Cinema, a business seminar, Taste of China events, a children’s programme, lectures, an art exhibition, a concert and the main event for everybody will be the Chinese New Year Carnival on Sun 10 Feb. \nThere are a number of events for children in the Libraries in Dublin, in the Chester Beatty Library and in the Hugh Lane Gallery. Most need no booking and all are free, but there is the Silk Worm Club in the Chester Beatty Library on Sat 09 Feb (14:00-15:30) where children (6-11) can make traditional Chinese decorations and there are only 20 places. This Lecture reviews the history of Robot Wars. Different types of Robot technology will be demonstrated including the well known Daleks from BBC Dr Who series and a robot from the feature film ‘Devious’.<\/p>\n

Ian Watts, has an outstanding record of success in the various “Robot Wars” programmes, both in the UK and in the United States and he also lectures in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Brighton.<\/p>\n

Dublin Free Wifi – Part 2<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you automatically scroll to the This is Odd! section when reading the Dublin Event Guide, then let me re-direct you once more. This week the main “This is Odd!” is built in the Dublin News article about the Dublin Free Wifi Service, so check there for the Good, the Bad and the Odd about this service.<\/p>\n

But while you are here, I will add one more aspect to it. Something I encountered on Thursday when I tried out the Wifi Hotspot on Barnardos Square. Whiel standing on Barnardos Square to try out the service and to check the speed, I suddenly got am e-mail from Google that told me that someone possibly tried to hijack my Google Mail account. As the address from which the “suspicious activity” came, an IP address in Frankfurt was given. Definitely suspicious and thanks to Google for watching my back, but it was an odd coincidence that it just happened at the time when I had logged into the Dublin Wifi Hotspot.<\/p>\n

My conclusion is that Gowex, the service provider for the Dublin Free Wifi Service uses an address range that appers to be in Frankfurt, so be prepared to experience some interesting stuff (for the geeks: geo location issues in addition to suspicious bheavior warnings) until the initial hiccups are removed.<\/p>\n

The number of events is increasing steadily and while Dublin is still running “Winter Programme” as far as the types of events are concerned, it won’t be long until we – against better judegement – go to outdoor movie screenings etc. ;-) Ah well, it would be a waste of time if we waited for warm weather.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
