Hi all!<\/p>\n

What a mad week! The big news of HMV’s closure, Horse DNA in Beef Burgers and Lance Armstrongs admission to have cheated for 7 years and today then the awful weather here and snow chaos in part of the UK, definitely took all the limelight. I hardly remember who is the Taoiseach of this country. ;-) I was somewhat affected by the HMV closure because I had a EUR 100 gift card, which is now worthless. But that is unfortunately life. The employees in HMV or any other employees that lost their jobs in other companies are affected more. Did you for example know that Sin \u00c9 was closed in the beginning of January, then sold and then re-opened but that in the process all previous staff were kicked out? There are lots more things that we don’t even hear about in different companies.<\/p>\n

Now we could become all negative and feel sorry for each other or we can look for opportunities. Easier said than done if you have lost your job, but if we are honest, the ONLY way to find another job (as hard as it is) if we have the attitude of looking for opportunities instead of staring at the bad news. Let’s try that together! Have a look around you and see what positive things are around you. Maybe it is a picture on your wall that triggers a memory. Maybe it is a friend who has a good chat with you. Maybe it is a song. Maybe it is a sun ray (in a few days) or a flower or even just the picture of a cute cat or dog that you found on someone’s Facebook profile. I guarantee you that if you search you will find at least one thing, even if it is tiny. …and if you find nothing else then have a look at all the 135 free events in this Dublin Event Guide and smile about that! :-)<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

This week the Tradfest in Temple Bar is the biggest event. But it starts on Tuesday, so doesn’t help this weekend and also is not everyone’s “cup of tea”. The few events that you should check out, though, and you will find me there too, are:<\/p>\n

Which Course? Expo in Mansion House, the Brocante Market in the Dublin Food Co-op and Kickstart 2013 in Dun Laoghaire (if you have children to entertain). There are also a good few interesting lectures this week, but again this is not everybody’s thing.<\/p>\n

In weeks like that, I always recommend that you try ONE new thing! One thing that you normally would not do! Maybe you will discover something interesting new and if not, then at least you KNOW why you don’t like it. ;-)<\/p>\n

Sencity – Multi-Sensory Music Event – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

Sat 09 February: 21:00-03:00 – RDS Concert Hall, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4<\/p>\n

Sencity is a multi-sensory music event where the audience cannot only hear but also feel, see, smell and taste the music \u2013 anybody is enabled to capture the music’s passion, diverse emotions, vibes and lyrics through different channels. Created and celebrated by people with and without hearing abilities. Sencity will be in Dublin for the first time. This unique multi-sensory live music event will take place on Sat 09 Feb in the RDS Concert Hall.<\/p>\n

The organisers are not a big, sterile company, but five extremely enthusiastic and hard-working Germans who all studied in Holland and experienced this event there for the first time. They are working with a team of 16 deaf and hard of hearing young people from Dublin to make SencityDublin happen.<\/p>\n

There will be live artists (Signmark, Kormac’s Big Band, The Wonder Villains, Torann Drums and Gavxmas), “aroma jockeys” who intensify the feeling of the songs performed with fitting scents, “food jockeys” who create sensations that impart what the music could taste like, make-up artists, masseurs, hair dressers and many more. The senses are fired up by laser and light shows that turn songs into colours, shapes and pictures. On stage, there are sign dancers translating lyrics and emotions into Irish Sign Language and one of the most exceptional features is the vibrating dance floor which responds to the music\u2019s bass frequency. – Sounds like an amazing event!<\/p>\n

High Street Stores dropping like birds?<\/h2>\n

It seems that the day of reckoning is nigh for many high street stores. In the UK recent months saw the closure of Jessop (Cameras), Comet (Electrical Goods) and now HMV. Luckily only HMV reached us because the others had no presence in Ireland. But we see that problems in UK Stores directly and immediately affect us and you can check through the shops in Ireland yourself to see which are stronly linked to the UK. Many of them are not in trouble, but as we have seen, things can go very fast and if you have vouchers you could lose out. So, my strong recommendation is (I got burned by the HMV closure myself!) to use your vouchers as soon as possible and maybe to consider NOT to use any vouchers any more in the future. If you want to give a present, just give cash. Less complicated and much less risky.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Free Family History Service at National Archives<\/h2>\n

The National Archives of Ireland provides a free family history service to visitors to the archives in Bishop’s Street, where members of the public can consult a professional genealogist about sources relating to their family history. The Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematogr\u00e1ficos (ICAIC), the Cuban Film Institute, presents numerous screenings of locally produced and international films throughout Cuba each year and for each, a unique poster is created by a Cuban graphic artist. These posters are totally handmade. In the silk-screen process a screen is hand cut for each individual colour. Each colour is applied separately. Each colour takes 24 hrs to dry before the next can be applied.<\/p>\n

Kickstart 2013 at the People\u2019s Park in Dun Laoghaire is a free family day out with loads of activities to put some colour back in everyone\u2019s cheeks and some movement back into your body. The DLR Sports Department will be there to provide some sporty fun and DLR Leisure Services will be in the park to offer their fitness assessment and information on the DLR leisure centres in the county.<\/p>\n

Turning of the Seal<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is this the oddest event of them all??? And do the Taoiseach, Ceann Comhairle and Chief Justice really witness that event every year? What would happen if they just decided not to do it anymore? OMG, would that mean Ireland would lose its sovereignty? I was not able to find any official notice of invitation to this event, but allegedly it is open to the public: Every year on 21 Jan at 12:00 the Irish Seal (which is an Irish harp) will be \u201cturned\u201d in the presence of the Taoiseach, Ceann Comhairle and Chief Justice. I know that every country has some odd ceremonies (e.g. the US flag ceremonies) and religious organisations are full of them anyway, but this ceremony seems soo archaic that it is just odd: The harp will be whirled around a few times and then declarations from 1919 will be read one after another after another. You would think that a modern state doesn\u2019t need to repeat to declare its independence year after year after year! why \u2013 And why is the ceremony so little publicised? If it is meaningless then just forget about it. Based on the You Tube videos (search for \u201cTurning of the Sovereign Seal\u201d on You Tube and be amazed) the people that are involved take it VERY VERY serious. Odd! Maybe it is only some nationalist element that is so keen on this procedure, but then I wonder why the Mansion House is used for this event and why the mayor and possibly all the other three are present.http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?NR=1&v=KwpUYogeSwI<\/a><\/p>\n

Last week I was wondering here, if the Buying Irish campaign is really such a great thing in a country where we need exports and therefore need other people to buy products that are NOT from their own country. I used the example of the Irish Dairy Board and Kerrygold.<\/p>\n

This week a COMPLETELY different aspect is added to the equation: The question now is more “In what countries are allegedly Irish products produced?”. The Trad Fest in Temple Bar is our first festival for 2013, let’s hope many many will follow. Luckily the TradFest is an indoor event! If I remember it right, there was an outdoor component last year (I might be wrong!), but with the current weather it was a wise decision to leave out the outdoor stage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
