Happy New Year everybody!! I hope you started 2013 well and are – like me – looking forward to what this year will bring.<\/p>\n

I expect and look forward to lots of events, new challenges, new opportunities and new achievements. I also expect lots of fun, good times and smiles. Sure there will be more serious moments too and we all have to (and will) deal with them when they happen, but we don’t have to focus on them in advance unless we want to. And with the NLP\/Personal Development rule “You get more<\/span> of what you focus on!” in mind, I will leave it to you to decide what you prefer to focus on. Do you really want to focus on your worries and concerns? Or maybe more on the good sides of life?<\/p>\n

If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.<\/p>\n

Have you made New Year’s Resolutions on New Year’s Eve? Did you write them down? I have to admit that I don’t beleive in the effectiveness of these Resolutions. It is good to use the start of the new year to take stock and to make an effort to improve the aspects of your life that could do with improvements. But the problem with the typical New Year’s Resolutions is that they are broken faster than they are made. Why is that?<\/p>\n

TThe reason why they are broken so easily and so fast is because they are badly formulated. Most people don’t write them in positive language. Don’t set clear deadlines and don’t make them measurable. A New Year’s Resolution of “I should get fitter.” or “I want to eat\/drink less.” is no help. Instead you need to define them clearer.<\/p>\n

Dublin Castle and Farmleigh House closed until July 2013<\/h2>\n
\n

Because of the Irish EU Presidency in the first half of 2013, both Dublin Castle and Farmleigh House will be closed from January until June 2013. Dublin Castle is one of the main tourist attractions and Farmleigh House always has an impressive event schedule especially around Christmas and Easter. Both venues being unavailable will definitely reduce the attractiveness of Dublin as a tourist destination. So it is lucky that there is no big tourism initiative happening at the same time. Imagine if the Gathering took place during that time….Oh wait!!!!! Ooops!<\/p>\n

Dublin Castle is closed for all tours and there will be limited access to the courtyard at times. http:\/\/www.dublincastle.ie\/NewsEvents\/Title,22941,en.htm<\/a> The Chester Beatty Library in the gardens of Dublin Castle will remain open, but when there is no access through Castle Gates, visitors will have to use alternative routes (http:\/\/www.cbl.ie\/Programme—Events\/Events-Schedule.aspx<\/a>). Farmleigh House is also closed for all tours in the house, but the grounds of Farmleigh Estate, the gardens, gallery and Boathouse Cafe will be open as normal for most of the time. Irish EU Presidency<\/h2>\n
\n

Last time it was Ireland’s turn to take over the EU presidency, it was a much bigger deal than now. Since the EU has now a full-tim president of the European Council and the equivalent to a Minister of Foreign Affairs and because the headquarter in Bruxelles got a more important status, the Irish EU Presidency will be less impactful than previously. The impact on us in and the visitors to Dublin will however be sizeable.<\/p>\n

Dublin Castle is closed. Farmleigh House is closed. The area around Dublin Castle will at times be a high-security zone and the street to the right of City Hall (Castle Street) has been blocked. All officials coming to Dublin will get Dublin Bike Passes and it remains to be seen what impact that will have on the availavility of bikes for the paying users.<\/p>\n

There will be other effects and the coming weeks will reveal them. One thing is certain, to have the Gathering and the EU Presidency at the same time definitley complicates things.<\/p>\n

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9 on site and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

First Fortnight, the Mental Health Arts Festival, is using live music, spoken-word, theatre, film and visual art to create open discussion and understanding of mental health problems and challenge stigma. 21 events will take place between 02 and 12 Jan. Most of them are not free and many are already booked out. But I found a few free ones for which tickets are still available:<\/p>\n

+ Lunchtime Lift is a screening of a series of short films to give you a lift in the post-Christmas period. The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.<\/p>\n

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.<\/p>\n

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOSP – Wielka Orkiestra Swiatecznej Pomocy – http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Orchestra_of_Christmas_Charity<\/a>) is a yearly charity event that takes place in Poland and in places where Polish people live outside of Poland. This year is the 21th anniversary of the event and for the 8th time WOSP will take place in Dublin as well. This year’s cause is to raise funds to safe the lives of children and providing adequate health care for the elderly.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Irish-Polish contribution will be through an art exhibition: The exhibition will take place from Wed 09 Jan until Sat 12 Jan in the In-Spire Galerie (formerly Mad-Art Gallery). Admission to the exhibition is free but donation boxes are available. From 20:00 the duo “el grey” will perform.The exhibition will be open on Thurs, Fri and Sat from 11:00-17:00.<\/p>\n

On Sunday 13 Jan, the Grand Finale will take place and during this there will be an art auction of the art pieces from the exhibition in the Living Room in Cathal Brugha Street (just off Upper O’Connell Street). All the profits from the auction will go to the charity. The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands\/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.<\/p>\n

Polish Art Exhibition – WOSP<\/h2>\n

The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOSP – Wielka Orkiestra Swiatecznej Pomocy – http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Orchestra_of_Christmas_Charity<\/a>) is a yearly charity event that takes place in Poland and in places where Polish people live outside of Poland. This year is the 21th anniversary of the event and for the 8th time WOSP will take place in Dublin as well. This year’s cause is to raise funds to safe the lives of children and providing adequate health care for the elderly.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Irish-Polish contribution will be through an art exhibition: The exhibition will take place from Wed 09 Jan until Sat 12 Jan in the In-Spire Galerie (formerly Mad-Art Gallery). Admission to the exhibition is free but donation boxes are available. The exhibition will be open on Thurs, Fri and Sat from 11:00-17:00.<\/p>\n

On Sunday 13 Jan, the Grand Finale will take place and during this there will be an art auction of the art pieces from the exhibition in the Living Room in Cathal Brugha Street (just off Upper O’Connell Street). All the profits from the auction will go to the charity. The Gathering! Scam or nonsense or good thing?
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Gathering is upon us! It started with a “Procession of Light” called “The Journey” and you can expect LOTS of big words this year in connection with it. The Journey will probably be followed by The Arrival and then there has to be The Welcome and before The Departure you could fit in things like The Reunion and The Meal and The Culture Trail and it all will have to lead to The Bill because that is what The Gahtering is all about.<\/p>\n

The only purpose of the Gathering is to get as many people to come back to Ireland that have made a good bit of money aborad and to get them to leave lots of their money behind. There is no other and certainly no deeper meaning behind the cult-like sounding “The Gathering”. And to that extent I have to agree with actor Gabriel Byrne who called it a scam http:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/gabriel-byrne-slams-the-gathering-calls-it-a-scam-662823-Nov2012\/<\/a> The appearance of ‘we want to bring our people home to spend time with them and enrich their lives’ is purely a facade.<\/p>\n

But wait! This is not different than what Bord Failte\/Tourism Ireland does day in \/ day out! Their purpose in life is to get people to come to Ireland to drop money and then to go again to make room for others. So either all Tourism is a scam or this is just a smarter\/bigger scam? Well, in fact, it is a bit of a smarter and bigger scam. Because with some subliminal tricks (the name “The Gathering” is one of the tricks) the whopping number of 350,000 additional<\/span> visitors is targetted.<\/p>\n

I had a big issue with the whole idea in the beginning when it was introduced at one of the Think Tank meetings in Farmleigh House because the idea that was presented initially was to just claim that all the normal events like St. Patrick’s Day will be added to the programme of the Gathering and that no additional events are needed. This is as honest as calling a clapped out Toyota Starlet a “luxury limousine”. But luckily the people in Ireland adopted the idea of the Gathering and created (with some financial help from the Government) lots and lots of events that will be in addition to the usual events. So as it looks at the moment 2013 could really be different than previous years and might offer definite additional value to visitors. And this is what turns a tourism advertisement trick into a real value-add event.<\/p>\n

Yes, some of the events are big jokes and you can see a list of some of them here http:\/\/www.broadsheet.ie\/2012\/12\/04\/the-you-have-got-to-be-joking-ing\/<\/a> but others will have more substance and are a good thing.It is also a joke that the tourist attractions that Dublin Castle is and also Farmleigh House will be closed for half of the Gathering, but that is a completely different issue.<\/p>\n

So my initial agreement with Gabriel Byrne has been replaced by a careful and still slightly reluctant endorsement with an open mind so that I could even become a fan? Maybe! Well…. Hmmmm. Doubtful! :-P<\/p>\n

There is one big problem remaining, though! The Gathering is meant to bring 350,000 people to Ireland and that is expected to generate an extra EUR 170 million in revenue and create up to 3000 new jobs across Ireland http:\/\/www.corkcoco.ie\/co\/pdf\/52353512.doc<\/a> . But what then? On 01 Jan 2014 the 3000 might be out of work again and the 170m is nothing, a drop in the ocean, if you compare it to the Budget 2013 savings of EUR 3.5 billion and further similar savings in the region of billions being required in the years to come.<\/p>\n

Would it not have made more sense to look for sustainable job and revenue opportunities? So, maybe the Gathering is not so much a scam, but just a bad joke? What do you think? dublineventguide@gmail.com<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive.
