I hope you had a great Christmas, got either lots or just the right amount of presents and had a good time with family, friends or other loved ones. Having been in Germany to visit my parents in the run up to Christmas, I stayed in Dublin and had a great time. Thanks for the nice Christmas wishes from many of you and thanks also for the wonderful Christmas presents I got from some of you! (Thanks Emma L, Caroline M + Guy T and a yet unknown donor!)<\/p>\n

Today’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is a good bit shorter than usually, but that is no surprise. Between Christmas and New Year not much is happening and many Regular events will not take place. However, there are a number of events and it would be a pity not to tell you about them, so unlike most websites and other event listing publications, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is there to help you! :-)<\/p>\n

Last week I mentioned that Tourism Ireland should warn tourists about the fact that Ireland virtually closes down on Christmas Day and I was amazed how many tourists were in the City Centre with map in hand and nowhere to go on 25 Dec. In most (all??) other European countries the 25 Dec is a normal day with restaurants open as normal. Only in Ireland, the UK and the US it seems that you are LUCKY if a shop is open and if you as a tourist can find some food somewhere. Tourism Ireland, I think you neglect your duty of care!!!<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. There is not toooo much to choose from, but keep in mind that the Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival is still running until 01 Jan and that it will finish with a massive Fireworks. On the same evening there is a Fireworks at St. Stephen’s Green at 20:00, but expect the whole area to be totally swamped with people. If you are looking for a very much out of the ordinary NYE party, have a look at the Little Green Gallery NYE event!<\/p>\n

And finally I can recommend the Big Brunch at Meeting House Square on New Year’s Day if you either like dancing or like watching dancing OR like listening to music (Electric Ceili and Swing\/Charleston etc).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dublin Castle closed until July<\/h2>\n
\n

Because of Ireland’s EU presidency, Dublin Castle will be completely closed to visitor tours from January until the end of June. Warn your visiting friends so that they won’t be disappointed. The website doesn’t confirm that yet, but the notification will go up there in the next few days. As it happens so often, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) tells you first! ;-) http:\/\/www.dublincastle.ie\/<\/a><\/p>\n

At times the entrance gate to the Castle grounds will be closed as well and if you want to get to the Chester Beatty Library during that time you have to take the long walk and get there through the access route behind Dublin Castle. Farmleigh House closed until July 2013<\/h2>\n
\n

Farmleigh House announces that the house will be closed from January until June 2013 “due to official Government and State business associated with the EU Presidency.” The building, which serves as the government’s B&B, is normally open for (free) tours if there are no official visitors booked in. But for the full six months of the Irish EU Presidency it will be closed now. The grounds of Farmleigh estate, the gardens, gallery and Boathouse Cafe will be open as normal.<\/p>\n

Farmleigh Estate is at the north-western end of Pheonix Park and was bought by the Irish Government from the Guinness family in 1999. The Office of Public Works (OPW) looks after the estate and the house and they regularly run very well-organised and interesting free events there to use the house\/estate when it is not needed for official business.<\/p>\n

If you always wanted to visit Farmleigh House, you have to be a little patient as you will have to wait until after June. But in the meantime you can have a look at a few pictures at http:\/\/www.farmleigh.ie\/TourofFarmleigh\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival will continue until 19:00 on 01 Jan.<\/p>\n

Over forty market stalls in chalets make up the Christmas Market in the Dun Laoghaire Town Centre and the Metals (near the Seafront underneath the Forty Foot Bar). There is a Life-size crib with live animals open at St. Michael\u2019s Church.<\/p>\n

And there is also a 60m Ice Slide on Dun Laoghaire Harbour Plaza open until 01 Jan from 11:00-19:00 every day. You can watch the spectacle for free and\/or you can slide down yourself for EUR 2 (for 3 slides).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.<\/p>\n

The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.<\/p>\n

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Over forty market stalls in chalets make up the Christmas Market in the Dun Laoghaire Town Centre and the Metals (near the Seafront underneath the Forty Foot Bar). There is a Life-size crib with live animals open at St. Michael\u2019s Church.<\/p>\n

And there is also a 60m Ice Slide on Dun Laoghaire Harbour Plaza open until 01 Jan from 11:00-19:00 every day. You can watch the spectacle for free and\/or you can slide down yourself for EUR 2 (for 3 slides).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.<\/p>\n

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Little Green Gallery is inviting to two interesting events. The first one is free and takes place in the Little Green Gallery Cafe & Bar. It is a a Woodstock-like 60s Summer Festival from 18:00-01:00. The Little Green will be transformed from a Caf\u00e9\/Gallery, Bar into a charming Woodstock like festival site equipped with Tee Pee’s, Bunting, Fairy Lights & all things beautifully retro and festival like. And you are expected to transform yourself from your 2012 self to your 1960s self (60s dress is essential!).<\/p>\n

But it doesn’t stop there. After 01:00 the party will move to a secret location somewhere in the City Centre (Admission: EUR 20) where it continues until 06:00 in the morning with more Soul, Northern Soul, Funk, Rock N’ Roll & Motown.<\/p>\n

The New Years Eve Festival this year is the opening to the infamous Gathering (More about the scam the Gathering is and also about the many surprisingly positive sides of it in the next few weeks in one of the upcoming Dublin Event Guides.) for this reason Dublin City is having a slightly bigger NYE Festival than last year.<\/p>\n

The festival consists of the main event, the New Year’s Eve Count Down Concert, a Fireworks Spectacular at St. Stephen’s Green at 20:00 and the People’s Procession of Light at 18:30.<\/p>\n

Count Down Concert:
\nLast year a concert took place at College Green for the first time. The concert featured a range or performers and the ticket price was low-ish (EUR 10). This year only two main acts (Bell X1 and Imelday May) and supporting act “Ham Sandwich” will perform and the tickets for the concert are a much less reasonable EUR 20 (+ booking fee). The concert will run from 20:30-01:00 and there will be some pyrotechnics (no fireworks in the usual sense). It seems that there are still tickets available on http:\/\/www.nyedublin.ie\/festival-schedule\/countdown-concert<\/a> but make sure you have bought tickets before you go! There will be a bar\/food service in the concert area, but be aware that your bags are most likely searched on the way in.<\/p>\n

Fireworks:
\nThe Big Bang Fireworks Spectacular (from 20:00) over St Stephen\u2019s Green is a free, family friendly event and everyone, young and old is invited to come along. This is the first time ever for a fireworks display to be held in Dublin\u2019s historic Georgian Centre. Streets on the four sides of St. Stephen\u2019s Green will be closed off to traffic for the duration of the fireworks display and you can expect a massive amount of people and some seriously overwhelmed security staff\/stewards. Make sure that you come early if you want to get close to St. Stephen’s Green. Leave the car at home if possible or keep it far away from St. Stephen’s Green and College Green.<\/p>\n

Procession of Light:
\nThe People’s Procession of Light will start the NYE Festival at 18:30. It will begin at College Green and will take its route to St. Stephen’s Green and participants are asked to bring lanterns and LED lights (proper torches are not allowed). The procession is meant to remind us of the traditional Irish torch-lit (with real torches) processions through the centuries and it is a free family-friiendly event. Registration to this event is required and has to happen between 12:00 and 18:00 on 31 Dec, however it seems that the pre-registration is closed and no other participants will be allowed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Many pubs\/clubs are charging an admission charge on New Year’s Eve even if they are usually free. One perfect example is Cafe en Seine who unexpectedly charge EUR 10.<\/p>\n

I don’t have a list of all pubs\/clubs that describes their NYE policy, but I did come across a few that do not charge and Howl at the Moon is one of them. The display will be visible from many areas in Dun Laoghaire and even from further away along Dublin Bay. But the best viewing will be at Newtownsmith Green between Dun Laoghaire Pier and Sandycove.<\/p>\n

If the New Year’s Eve Fireworks is too late for your children, there will even be a Family Fireworks at 18:00 on the same day.<\/p>\n

I was at the Big Brunch a year ago and it was a great afternoon. Dancing is not my biggest strength and to avoid injuring any bystanders or participants, I decided to stick to the watching, but especially the Swing\/Charleston segment from 15:00, was great fun. ;-)<\/p>\n

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) launched that initiative in 2011 to encourage more people to visit the historic sites that it manages and continued it on all First Wednesdays in 2012. It seems that it will also continue in 2013.<\/p>\n

Most sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee are free every first Wednesday until the end of the year.

The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.<\/p>\n

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dublin Mountain Partnership – Guided Walks<\/h2>\n

The Dublin Mountain Partnership runs guided walks in the Dublin mountains every month. They are at times quite strenous and only for very experienced walkers, but some other walks have only a moderate degree of diffculty. For all walks you have to pre-register on the Friday before the walk this doesn’t fit perfectly into the publishing schedule of the Dublin Event Guide, so I am only listing their walks in this section. The next walks are on 27 Dec (15km, 5hrs, Strenuous) and on New Year’s Day (01 Jan) (12km, 3.5 hrs, moderate). O2 on the way out? Lower data plans are the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, I have no access to secret information that I base this question on. I do think that Telefonica, the owner of O2 will rather sooner than later leave Ireland, but that is just my personal speculation and it could still take a few more years (or might never happen).<\/p>\n

But a very strange thing happened when I enquired about the current price plans in an O2 shop this week (not for myself, though): An O2 shop employee told us that O2 is in the process of or has already reduced the data volume that is part of the Bill Pay plans.<\/p>\n

Instead of 1 or 2 GByte, the first two plans now have only 200 MByte or 350 MByte of data allowance. And they can only be upgraded to 350 MByte or 700 MByte respectively. This is very odd! The O2 employee then tried to convince us that this was the right step in the future, but I seem to have detected some (very well hidden) irony in the last statement.
