Hi all!<\/p>\n

This week the Dublin Event Guide will be earlier with you than normal. This is unfortunately not because I found the solution to the Gordian Knot ( http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordian_Knot<\/a> ) of the late completion of the weekly e-zine\/newsletter. Instead it is because I took a different approach this week and worked until late\/early morning every evening this week because I am going away for a long weekend from Friday until Monday this weekend. So I cancelled all my other activities, started early and might miss a few events, but at least I can catch my plane to Germany on Friday morning without having to worry how to finish this weeks edition. Sure, I could have taken a break this week, but I didn’t miss one week in 286 weeks and I didn’t want to break that track record this week either.<\/p>\n

I will be at Christmas Markets for most of the weekend and will enjoy Gl\u00fchwein and delicious food. The forecast is for rain OR snow and the temperature is expected to be around -3. So with a bit of luck, I will come home with the first snow pictures but either way, I will be back with a “belly full” of Christmas Markets. Good news is that in Dublin the “main” Christmas Market is starting as well this weekend. The Docklands Christmas Market does start and will run until Christmas.<\/p>\n

With Christmas coming up, most of you will probably buy a good few presents online and while you are doing that, you can help the Dublin Event Guide. Many online retailers don’t pay for advertisement anymore, but they pay a small commission on sales that was the result of a promotion. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.<\/p>\n

Today I have a short story for you as told by Leah Pearlman, the co-founder of the Happiness Institute. In May 2011 she had the following story on her “Dharma Comics”, a comic blog in which she draws on life to explore personal and universal truth:<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

This week will be away and can’t enjoy the events in Dublin with you. But I have other events to enjoy and will have loads of Gluehwein on REAL :-P Christmas Markets. So maybe I should not give you any recommendations and just let you decide on your own? But just this week we have arrived at an all time max with 190 free events in one week! An astonishing number. And with sooo many free events, it could easily happen that you just can’t see the wood for the trees anymore. So despite my absence, here is what I would do:<\/p>\n

I would definitely go to the Docklands Christmas Market, I also would definitely go to Shutterbug’s Vintage Clothing Kilo Sale, it sounds like a cool and quirky event – if you are interested in buying clothes! ;-) Oxjam is another Saturday event I would have a look at. Then the Dun Laoghaire Ice Sculpture Carving would also be on my (long!) list of To-Dos.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the Affordable Gift Fair in Dun Laoghaire and the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market in Dublin 8 are on my list and I would definitely go there.<\/p>\n

So, at least there are some recommendations for the weekend, the rest you have to find out yourself! :-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Park Singers Christmas Concert<\/h2>\n

The Park Singers choir, are performing their Christmas Concert on Sunday 16 Dec in the St. Dominic’s College Church in Cabra (at 19:30). The Park Singers are a four-part female choir from Dublin formed in 1970 which is conducted by Orla Gillan. Free events are (hopefully) unaffected by the Budget<\/h2>\n
\n

This week’s budget announcement did not come as a total shock because of all the bits of information that were fed to media etc beforehand, but it nevertheless was painful because everyone got affected and some severely. The only area, though, that is relatively secure in 2013 and will thrive in an exceptional way is the events sector. I have an ambivalent opinion about The Gathering (even the name is stupid!) but there is reason for an optimistic view on the amount and quality of events that we will find in Ireland next year. Let’s hope that many are remaining to be free. There is a risk that the “shaking down the visitors for money” extends to events as well, but let’s keep our fingers crossed!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Again this year, Paddy Campbell is exhibiting his wax figure creations in Bewley’s in Grafton Street. The exhibition entitled \u201cOnce Upon a Thumb\u201d features Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs as well as six other scenarios, comprising of over 100 wax figures made in Paddy\u2019s studio in Florence, Italy. The Docklands Christmas Festival will start on Friday 07 Dec and will continue until 23 Dec. The Festival is in its 8th year and while it is the best and most “christmassy” market in Dublin it still could do with some significant improvements. Or at least that was the case in previous years. This year there will be improvements claim the organisers, so let’s see! And let’s hope that the ugly white plastic tents have been replaced with something that has more of a Christmas-feel.<\/p>\n

80 traders are selling their goods and there will be stalls with food and mulled wine, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts etc. A carousel and “Vitorian fairground attractions” will also be there. The market is open until 20:00 on weekdays and until 22:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

I love Christmas markets and am looking forward to the Docklands Christmas Market!<\/p>\n

The puppet show is live, interactive and guaranteed to generate lots of belly laughs and little giggles from the audience. Saturday 15 Dec at 16:00.<\/p>\n

Using the flora of St Anne\u2019s Park as inspiration, artist Maeve Clancy will transform the exhibition space of The Red Stables into a cut paper wonderland, creating a magical space to explore and engage with. The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.<\/p>\n

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Docklands Christmas Festival will start on Friday 07 Dec and will continue until 23 Dec. The Festival is in its 8th year and while it is the best and most “christmassy” market in Dublin it still could do with some significant improvements. Or at least that was the case in previous years. This year there will be improvements claim the organisers, so let’s see! And let’s hope that the ugly white plastic tents have been replaced with something that has more of a Christmas-feel.<\/p>\n

80 traders are selling their goods and there will be stalls with food and mulled wine, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts etc. A carousel and “Vitorian fairground attractions” will also be there. The market is open until 20:00 on weekdays and until 22:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

I love Christmas markets and am looking forward to the Docklands Christmas Market!<\/p>\n

The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.<\/p>\n

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Docklands Christmas Festival will start on Friday 07 Dec and will continue until 23 Dec. The Festival is in its 8th year and while it is the best and most “christmassy” market in Dublin it still could do with some significant improvements. Or at least that was the case in previous years. This year there will be improvements claim the organisers, so let’s see! And let’s hope that the ugly white plastic tents have been replaced with something that has more of a Christmas-feel.<\/p>\n

80 traders are selling their goods and there will be stalls with food and mulled wine, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts etc. A carousel and “Vitorian fairground attractions” will also be there. The market is open until 20:00 on weekdays and until 22:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

Established in 1956 by Fr. Louis Coffey, the Live Crib at the Mansion House has entertained generations. The Live Crib consists of a traditional nativity scene set among live animals in a specially constructed stable. The Docklands Christmas Festival will start on Friday 07 Dec and will continue until 23 Dec. The Festival is in its 8th year and while it is the best and most “christmassy” market in Dublin it still could do with some significant improvements. Or at least that was the case in previous years. This year there will be improvements claim the organisers, so let’s see! And let’s hope that the ugly white plastic tents have been replaced with something that has more of a Christmas-feel.<\/p>\n

80 traders are selling their goods and there will be stalls with food and mulled wine, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts etc. A carousel and “Vitorian fairground attractions” will also be there. The market is open until 20:00 on weekdays and until 22:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

I love Christmas markets and am looking forward to the Docklands Christmas Market!<\/p>\n

How many Santa’s are there!?!?!?!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Can you remember when you were a child? How did this Santa-thing work for you? I grew up in a Santa-free country (yep, deprived childhood!!), so I don’t get it at all. Let’s assume you are around 3-5 years of age. At that age, you do know how many dads, how many mums and how many uncles and aunts you have, right. But now something strange happens.<\/p>\n

You go with your parents to a shopping centre and they bring you to this grotto\/hut thing. “Hey, there is Santa! And he knows me and my name and he has a present for me. Cool!” – All great and lots of fun. Now you have seen Santa. But wait! You go with your parents to another shopping centre and there is a guy that looks more or less the same and calls himself Santa as well. Then you go to a Christmas Market and there he is again: Santa! Then you go to the lighting of the Christmas Tree and again he is there!<\/p>\n

At this stage, even a 3-5 year old should start wondering! This guy is just everywhere and somehow he always arrives before you. If it is the same guy, then he seems to run like mad from one place to the other. But if there is more than one guy, then which one is the REAL Santa? And how come there are more than one?<\/p>\n

And WAIT! If Santa runs from shopping centre to shopping centre in Dublin, who is making my presents on the North Pole???<\/p>\n

But it gets worse! On Christmas Eve for the last bit of shopping your are dragged along to a shopping centre again and there he is again. Soon afterwards you go home and not much later your parents show you on the computer the Norad Radar track of Santa’s sleigh ride to all the children in the world? WTF??? This old round lazy guy was just sitting in the shopping centre in Dundrum and now he is on a sleigh in Australia? ..on his way to Dublin? How did he get there? Daddy always takes ages to drive from our home to granny. Why is daddy so slow and Santa so fast? And why did Santa not stay here from earlier? He already was sitting on a sack of presents in Dublin?<\/p>\n

What is it that stops children from wondering even about the basics? And we are not even considering that all the Santas in the Shopping Centres look somewhat different to each other!<\/p>\n
