It is cold outside, it is dark early and people talk a lot about parties, so Christmas MUST be around the corner. :-) Isn’t it interesting how we all have just a few memories and parameters that make Christmas really good. Is it the Toy Show for you, which is on tonight? If you don’t know what the Toy Show is, what the Late Late Show tonight on RTE and you will not understand, but see! :-) Or is it the partying? Or the coldness or the trees or the Gluehwein or the buying of presents or the Christmas Markets?<\/p>\n

I definitely love a good Christmas market! But we are still served badly in that respect! Sometimes I wonder if I should organise a Christmas Market, but then who would write the Dublin Event Guide! :-) So I better remain a passionate Christmas Market customer instead of an organiser.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

This week it is obviously lots of Christmas related events that make the cut. But there is an odd one to start the Saturday. I am not sure if I will make it, but I would love to see the Deutsch fuer Anfaenger exhibition in Dun Laoghaire. Then it is definitely Christmas on the Square the 1-day pop-up market on Merrion Square. The Christchurch Christmas Market, the Farmleigh House Christmas events and the Hungarian Culture Festival compete with each other then. In the evening, I recommend you go to the Mint Bar to see The Ratzingers.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the Pure Vintage Christmas Market and the Christmas Events in the National Museum in Collins Barracks are on my list before I can be found at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass again.<\/p>\n

During the week I will definitely go to the RDS Library Book Sale. Then in Thursday the National Print Museum Christmas Fair will start and on Friday the Docklands Christmas Festival will begin. Have a look at the Festive First Thursday on Thursday and the Damn Fine Print event on the same day.<\/p>\n

I think that is definitely enough to do for one week!! ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

They will also bring Bean Bags (you guessed it!) and Popcorn and the first movie is Anchorman. It will be screened in the Hampton Hotel, 19-29 Morehampton Road, Donnybrook, Dublin 4. Anchorman will be screened on Sun 25, Mon 26, Tues 27 and Wed 28 Nov and all proceeds from Tuesday will go to the Movember Charity.A single bean bag is EUR 10 and a double bean bag (2 people) is EUR 15. I don’t usually do that, but a few good friends will go to Haiti soon to stay in tents without water and electricity for two weeks to build houses with the Haven Partnership for people that are STILL living in temporary huts after the earthquake in Haiti more than 2 years ago. Christmas FM back on air<\/h2>\n

Great news for all fans of Christmas and Christmas Music! Christmas FM is back on air. They will be broadcasting from 28 Nov until 26 Dec and this year’s charity is the children’s charity ISPCC \/ Childline. The programmes are done by well known radio DJs from all the other radio stations who volunteer for Christmas FM. You can listen online at http:\/\/www.christmasfm.com<\/a> or on your radio on 94.3 in Dublin City & County or on 88.1 in the Dublin Commuter Belt (wherever that is!).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

No “Winter Wonderland” and no “Christmas on Ice” in Dublin<\/h2>\n
\n

After a big entrance into the Christmas Market world, last year, it already came to a crashing end: The Winter Wonderland at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham will NOT take place this year or ever again! Originally planned for 5 years, the organiser Anschuetz Entertainemnt Group (AEG), who are the second largest concert promoters in the world decided to pull the plug and to cancel the next four years of events. Last year they invested EUR 2 mio in the event, that had a small Christmas Market and a big ice rink, fun fair and circus, but they didn’t get the expected revnue from it. 7Up was the naming sponsor and the event was called “7UP WinterWonderland”.<\/p>\n

Christmas on Ice, which took place in the RDS in Ballsbridge for 8 years and who also had ice rinks in Smithfield, Liffey Valley and a dry (i.e. plastic) “ice” rink on the roof of Arnotts, is also gone. It seems the operating company “Sage Creek”, which traded as “Synergy Project Management” when running the ice rinks, has been closed down. http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/newspaper\/finance\/2012\/0405\/1224314387603.html<\/a> ON top of all that, it seems also that the organisers of the (not so great) Christmas Market at the Square in Tallaght, who ran the unsuccessful Fitzwilliam Square Christmas Market in 2010, also gave up.<\/p>\n

That leaves two big (and one small) gaps in the Christmas events list! Do you want to organise a market for 2013? There is a need for it! ;-) Luckily the Docklands Christmas Market will take place again and there will also be events at Merrion Square this weekend and in Farmleigh House every weekend until Christmas. A different ice skating rink organiser at the RDS is running “I Skate” and Dun Laoghaire is running an impressive Christmas events programme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Spar-Pest in Dame Street<\/h2>\n
\n

The Spars and Centras in Dublin are even worse than the mobile phone shops and the pest\/disease has claimed another life. Do you remember the Philips shop at the corner of Dame Street and George’s Street? It didn’t close too long ago. The building is really a very pretty building when you have a closer look and the shop had some impressive features. Guess who has moved in there? Yep! With regret I have to report that Spar, the blight of Dublin’s shop premises has taken it over now.<\/p>\n

I know, some of you might say that it is better to have Spar in there than to have the place vacant and the rental for that location must be mad high so that it could have stayed empty for quite some time. I accept that point, but I wonder if Spar is helping if they are prepared to pay very high rents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

New Nightclub in Harcourt Street<\/h2>\n
\n

On Fri 07 Dec at 23:00 a new nightclub, called Everleigh Garden, will open at 33 Harcourt Street and will compete with Copper Face Jacks and Krystle. The facebook page of the club went live only 9 days ago and they already have more than 2300 Likes. I have to admit that I am a little envious on that. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) Facebook Page is currently still ahead with more than 11,100 Likes, but I can’t offer free launch party invites (“Like our page and we’ll invite you to the opening.”) to people that like the Dublin Event Guide page, so Everleigh will probably win. However, do the people that like a nightclub that hasn’t even opened the door realise that there is NO way that 2300 people will get an invite to the launch, but that instead everyone is invited?? Just wondering. ;-) https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/everleigh.garden<\/a> Interestingly, 70% of the nightclub will be outdoors with a “Mediterranean atmosphere”!! Ireland and outdoors? The first series, Better City contains fifteen photo montages of Dublin city-scapes with surreal modifications made to them. The second series, Better Faces, is made up of of fifty portraits of people from Janet’s generation whom she feels are making things better for themselves and better for the society they live in.<\/p>\n

The Trinity Exhibition 2012 is the largest exhibition of its kind in Trinity College Dublin and attracts submissions from students and staff of all disciplines. This year, out of all the submissions, 28 works have been chosen to be displayed in Twisted Pepper.<\/p>\n

Trinity Exhibition 2012 will be launched on Tues 04 Dec at 19:30 by renowned visual artist and photographer Kevin Abosch. Like all runs, the Jingle Bell Run is not a free event, but it might be a spectacle that you want to watch. Expect 1,500 runners, many of them in Santa gear or with Santa hats.The race starts on Acres Road and finishes very near Chapelizod Gates. Start and Finish are very close to each other. There don’t seem to be any other events around the race. All sponsorship from this charity run goes to Debra Ireland.<\/p>\n

Five times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2012″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green. If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions. Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free. Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days. THis exhibition is the last for the year and is specifically targetting the Christmas customer. There will be all kinds or paintings and other \u201changable\u201d art for sale.<\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9 and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.<\/p>\n

The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.<\/p>\n

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival will run from Sat 01 Dec until 01 Jan. It starts on Saturday at 12:00 with the opening of “Santa’s Arctic Kingdom” in the Dun Laoghaire Shopping Centre. The Arctic Kingodm (EUR 10 per child – includes gift and photo) is an adventure trip for children from the South Pole to the North Pole to help Santa in his workshop.<\/p>\n

At 17:15 the Christmas Festival will be launched officially on the Harbour Plaza (Santa will arrive on a Harley Davidson) and this will be followed by a Fireworks display. (no admission charge)<\/p>\n

Other events over the next weeks: On 07 Dec a huge Ice Slide opens at the Harbour Plaza, on Sun 08 Dec Ice Sculptures will be carved live and on 13 Dec the Christmas Market opens. Five times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2012″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green. If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions. Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free. Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days. THis exhibition is the last for the year and is specifically targetting the Christmas customer. There will be all kinds or paintings and other \u201changable\u201d art for sale.<\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate has fascinated generations of children from Dublin and all over Ireland and 50 years after it first began, it still draws the crowds. The Moving Crib is like an expanded Nativity Play going back to Adam and Eve and finishing after the crib scene with the young Jesus teaching the Doctors in the Temple. There are over 100 figures in the Crib arranged in 14 different tableaux. They cover various episodes of the Old and New Testament. The figures are about a metre high, moulded in papier-mache and dressed in miniature clothes. Concealed motors control the movements of the arms, head and legs. All figures, motors, clothing etc. come from a firm in Germany.<\/p>\n

Four events take place each day, running for 30 minutes. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find out yet when these four events take place. The opening hours are Weekdays: 14:00-18:00 and Weekends: 11:30-18:00 from 26 Nov-06 Jan. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A public meeting of the People Convention (An Chomhdh\u00e1il Phobail – The People\u2019s Convention (CPPC)) will take place and the topic “Why don\u2019t the people decide state policy?” will be discussed. The CPPC is of the opinion that every Irish citizen should be asked for their opinion about issues like the national budget and therefore they run this event on the evening before Budget Day.<\/p>\n

Today is Budget Day, which means that the Irish Government will announce the budget for 2013. It won’t be pretty and we all can look forward to having less after the announcement. Some taxes will increase by midnight on Wednesday, so if you are a smoker, drink alcohol or drive a car, make sure that you either buy a supply in the days before Budget Day or immediately after the announcement. Other taxes and cost will increase only by 01 January so you have a few weeks to get ready for it.<\/p>\n

The speeches in the Dail will start at 14:30 and there will be two speeches that outline everything. Around 16:00 all will be said and newspapers and websites will analyse the impact of all the changes.<\/p>\n

The 6th yearly RDS Library Book Sale will take place in the RDS Library from 03-07 December. The Library will be selling duplicate copies and out of date books. RDS Members have also donated books for the sale. Admission is free and everybody is welcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Christmas Fair – Print Museum<\/h2>\n

The mezzanine level of the Print Museum is turned into a Christmas Market with stalls selling crafts and gifts. There will also be a number of self-guided arts and crafts activities for families and the Gutenberg Cafe will be open.<\/p>\n

The market will continue on Sat and Sun. Admission is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ice Slide Launch – Dun Laoghaire<\/h2>\n

A 60-metre ice slide is being set up in Dun Laoghaire for a fun experience for adults and children alike on D\u00fan Laoghaire Harbour Plaza. There will be hot chocolate and crepe stalls, an inflatable village and carousel and children\u2019s entertainment.<\/p>\n

The ice slide is EUR 2 per go, but I expect that access to the Christmas Viallg around it is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Docklands Christmas Festival<\/h2>\n

The Docklands Christmas Festival will start on Friday 07 Dec and will continue until 23 Dec. The Festival is in its 8th year and while it is the best and most “christmassy” market in Dublin it still could do with some significant improvements. Or at least that was the case in previous years. This year there will be improvements claim the organisers, so let’s see! And let’s hope that the ugly white plastic tents have been replaced with something that has more of a Christmas-feel.<\/p>\n

80 traders are selling their goods and there will be stalls with food and mulled wine, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts etc. A carousel and “Vitorian fairground attractions” will also be there. The market is open until 20:00 on weekdays and until 22:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

I love Christmas markets and am looking forward to the Docklands Christmas Market!<\/p>\n

On Friday from 16:00-18:00 the Christmas Lighting celebration will take place and from Saturday 08 Dec, Santa will meet children every Sat+Sun from 12:00-19:00 for free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Farmleigh Writer In Residence<\/h2>\n

Writer in Residence at Farmleigh this Autumn will be Dublin-born novelist, broadcaster and playwright Joseph O’Connor. He will be organising and participating in a series of events at Farmleigh, including an evening of live music and readings and a workshop for writers. He is the author of the novels ‘Star of the Sea’, and ‘Ghost Light’, and his stage version of Daphne Du Maurier’s novel ‘My Cousin Rachel’ recently played at Dublin’s Gate Theatre.<\/p>\n

No! It is not a Winter Wonderland in your basement!<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is very odd that just any type of Christmas Market in Dublin allegedly takes place in a Winter Wonderland. Going through lots and lots of events, I found basements that are turned in Winter Wonderlands and I found and I found First Floors of buildings that are turned in to Winter Wonderlands along the lines of “The first floor of our building will transform into a winter wonderland with market stalls\u2026” (I could mention names, but I won’t! :-) ) The people writing this CLEARLY never saw a Winter Wonderland! It looks maybe like this: http:\/\/www.wallpowper.com\/wallpaper-downloads-87934.html<\/a> but definitely NOT like a basement with a few tables from which crafts are sold!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Christmas Markets and Christmas Events are here and loads of them! Have a great week and enjoy some of these fine free events! I will go for the REAL thing again next weekend and will be in Germany for a few days. That means that either you will get the next Dublin Event Guide a good bit earlier because I already need to start working on it on Monday and need to have it finished by Thursday night\/Friday morning.
