The competition is all about the app itself, not for the content, so the praise for making it to the shortlist is all for iQ Content ( http:\/\/www.iqcontent.com<\/a> ) who created that wonderful app with and for me. If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.<\/p>\n

Today I have a challenge for you. It is a simple challenge but in our world of jobs and salaries and obligations it might not be sooo simple for many. Nevertheless, take some time, listen to it and think about it. The challenge is “What if money was no object?” and it is n the context with your job\/main occupation. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

The main events for me this week will be the “Feed the 5000”, the lighting of the REAL and natural Christmas Tree again in O’Connell Street and the Aviation Fair near Dublin Airport. But there is also the Astro Expo and the Dublin Flea Market that are interesting. By the way, I am not that mad about Christmas Trees that I am frozen with amazement and delight upon the switching on of the lights, but the programme around it is usually quite good and there is a buzz around the place, so that part I like. ;-)<\/p>\n

During the week there are a few interesting lectures\/talks if that is your thing, but I won’t get time to go to any of them unfortunately. So, I will make the most out of the weekend instead! :-) Maybe you will do the same!?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I don’t usually do that, but a few good friends will go to Haiti soon to stay in tents without water and electricity for two weeks to build houses with the Haven Partnership for people that are STILL living in temporary huts after the earthquake in Haiti more than 2 years ago. \n“Dublin for Free” is the Dublin Event Guide on the go! It is a web app that works on most smartphones and will allow you to bring the “Dublin Event Guide (For Free Events)” with you when you are out and about. It will also allow you to check out the current events when you are away from your computer or when the e-zine arrives late AGAIN on a Friday evening.The web app works on Android and on iOS and you can directly access it by putting http:\/\/m.dublineventguide.com<\/a> in your mobile browser. There is an app in the iOS store and it will be in the Google Play store in the next few days, but you don’t need to dwonload anything.<\/p>\n

Nice Christmas Tree replaces Ugly Tree in O’Connell Street – Good News!<\/h2>\n

The Christmas Tree in O’Connell Street was once a beautiful tall fir tree ( http:\/\/www.geodublin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Dublin-at-Christmas-Christmas-Tree-in-Ireland.jpg<\/a> ), before in 2008 Dublin became all modern and artificial and decided to replace nature with a EUR 300,000 (!!) expensive and very colourful flashy metal bubble tree ( http:\/\/media.nowpublic.net\/images\/\/cc\/e\/cce8f57131ffdbc3ce9e7f30c426e32b.jpg<\/a> ).<\/p>\n

But there is good news! Someone realised that the decision four years ago was a bad one and the ugly tree got banned from O’Connell Street according to the Evening Herald on 13 Nov (http:\/\/www.herald.ie\/news\/glass-christmas-tree-to-leave-oconnell-st-3292082.html<\/a> ).<\/p>\n

Instead a proper fir tree will be back in O’Connell Street and the “ugly tree” has been moved to Smithfiel. …allegedly to “boost footfall in other areas of the city centre over the Christmas period”. Hmmm, not very likely that an artificial tree will attract more people to Smithfield! Interestingly the same article says that “A council spokesperson revealed that the decision was taken to move the glass tree from O’Connell Street because of traffic considerations.” So there are TWO official lines for undoing the bad decision from 2008. ;-)<\/p>\n

The important bottom line? O’Connell Street will get a proper and nice Christmas tree! That’s definitely good news!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

An Bord Plean\u00e1la refuses new Liberty Hall planning appication<\/h2>\n

Did you see this new development? Dublin City Council had granted the Trade Union SIPTU planning permission to demolish Liberty Hall and rebuild a 22-storey building on the site, but An Bord Plean\u00e1la has refused permission to SIPTU because the deemed it too high and therefore too dominating and visually intrusive. This was SIPTU’s second attempt and the whole process is running since 2006 and won’t be over for another long time. Poetic Arpilleras<\/h2>\n

The Instituto Cervantes and the Embassy of Chile in Ireland invite you to the “Poetic Arpilleras” exhibition of the Chilean academic and curator Roberta Bacic, who lives in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

The exhibition shows 30 Chilean \u201carpilleras\u201d of various sizes. (The arpilleras are created by hand sewing scraps of materials and appliqueing onto burlap. Often arpillera dolls are used to add the three dimensional perspective. Wool is used to sew around the piece, either with a needle or crochet, to give it the shape of a picture to be hung on a wall) of various sizes.) The arpilleras tell about the history, society and culture of contemporary Chile.<\/p>\n

Fintan O\u2019Toole has chosen 99 remarkable objects, each of which opens a window on to an important moment in Irish history. You are invited to help choose the 100th object. Most come from the great trove of the National Museum of Ireland, a resource that is itself one of the wonders of Ireland. Others are from a variety of other institutions. They are not intended to be the 100 most remarkable objects on the island, or even to be a representative sample of the great collections. They are chosen simply for their ability to illuminate moments of change, development or crisis.<\/p>\n

The exhibition in Collins Barracks shows the 10 items shortlisted to be the 100th object in the series. There is a public vote online (100objects.ie) and a ballot sheet in the Museum where you can help to choose which object defines our modern times.<\/p>\n

Astro-Expo is Astronomy Ireland’s yearly exhibition, Ireland’s largest Astronomy and Space Exhibition, and it will take place this Saturday in the Sami Nasr Institute of Advanced Materials (SNIAM) in Trinity College. It is an exhibition of Telescopes and photos and equipment that members bring along each year to show new members and the public how exciting their hobby is. Throughout the day a host of telescope and equipment demonstrations and displays (including high-power amateur rockets from the Irish Rocketry Society) will be available and there are also three interesting talks.<\/p>\n

The exhibitions and demonstrations are free, but the lectures are EUR 7 for each (!) lecture (EUR 5 for members). You can pre-book tickets for the lectures via the website.<\/p>\n

“Feeding the 5000” is an interesting event this Saturday. Surprisingly ;-) it does exactly what it says on the tin: 5,000 Dubliners are invited to enjoy a hot vegetarian meal made entirely out of fresh misshapen vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. And with that you will get apple juice made from wonky but wonderful apples that would otherwise go unloved in orchards across the country. So come along and as long as some food is left, enjoy this free meal.<\/p>\n

All this will be provided completely free but with the aim to raise awareness about the scale of the problem of food waste in Ireland. The Dublin Council of Trade Unions are protesting against cuts and all types of austerity measures. The event starts at 13:00 at the usual spot for demonstrations, the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square. I couldn’t find where the march goes to, but the usual destination is the Dail in Kildare Street or alternatively Merrion Square.<\/p>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. I have to admit that I never did and still don’t get the Irish fascination (in some circles) for Christmas Jumpers. That is the jumpers that are only given and worn at Christmas and which have usually quite awful Christmas-related motives on them. Reindeers, Santas, etc.<\/p>\n

On Sunday the Christmas Jumpers get a mass airing in the only suitable context: a light-hearted and totally non-serious challenge.<\/p>\n

You are asked to dig our your cheesiest Christmas jumper and come to O’Connell Street to set a new world record for the most number of Christmas jumpers in one place at the same time.It won’t surprise you that the previous record was set in Dublin as well. Last year 583 people attended the same event.<\/p>\n

The event is part of the activities around the Christmas Tree lighting ceremonies in O’Connell Street. It isn’t explicitly said, but I would assume\/expect\/hope that particiaption is free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Are you needed or not? – Temple Bar Cultural Trust<\/strong><\/p>\n

I should start this by saying that I think the Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) has done a great job in Temple Bar over the years and that in some years they had absolutely outstanding events programmes. In recent years the exact same vibrancy is – possibly due to lack of funds – not there anymore, but the new umbrella roof over Meeting House Square that made that space so much more usable, the strong weekly Food Market on Meeting House Square and the Designer Mart in Cow’s Lane are big successes. All this has happened in the time since 2003, which was the year when Dermot McLaughlin was appointed chief executive of the Temple Bar Cultural Trust and therefore he deserves a huge amount of praise for the successes.<\/p>\n

Sure if you are successful then there are detractors as well and there are people that say that Temple Bar went totally out of control and is not the success that others see. Well, I see three Temple Bars. There is the family-friendly Temple Bar during the day, then there is the twilight zone in the early evening and then there is mayhem and chaos with drunks and unsocial behaviour in the night. The first is perfect, the second could be a little improved and the third one of these personas is seriously problematic, but I see many other reasons than the TBCT. However I am digressing! I wanted to look at something else.<\/p>\n

The aspect I wanted to look at is this: In October relatively unexpectedly for outsiders it was announced that Dermot McLaughlin would be going to Derry (coincidentally where he is from) for a period of 15 months to work a secondment as a project director for the City of Culture 2013 project in Derry. This sounded odd!! Because either he was the right man for TBCT and then he was needed in Dublin or he was on the way out and then a secondment would be a smoother way than to just replace him.<\/p>\n

It seemed to me that he was the right man, so I don’t get why Dublin City did let him go. In the meantime, less than 2 weeks ago, it was announced that Dublin City has appointed Ray Yeates, the City Arts Officer as the head of TBCT during the absence of Dermot McLaughlin. The Irish Times wrote in their article http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/newspaper\/ireland\/2012\/1113\/1224326526475.html<\/a> that this might indicate the first steps toward reincorporating TBCT into Dublin City Council, but that would be very bad for Temple Bar and I hope that the wisdom of the City Council is far greater than that speculation could suggest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
